Help: upon safe boot, got following message: BootCacheControl: Unable to open /Var/db/BootCache.playlist:2 No such file or directory

Mac Book Pro, late 2011. Purchased in a department store in Mexico.
Was running ok for several days after I purchased it.
Had some software installed and memory upgraded from 4 to 8Gb.
Suddenly at start up, got a gray screen with a spinning wheel and never boot.
Followed advise from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 and performed a safe boot. (hold Shift-Command-V during startup instead of just Shift).
The boot sequence starts then stops and nothing happens. these are the last lines of the boot sequence.

For what little experience I have on Unix systems, it has to do with the libraries which cannot be launched...
Any ideas, solutions, suggestions are welcomed.
Cheers.

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select your startup volume, and run Repair Permissions. Then reboot as usual.

Simply performing the Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to

Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Help!  /var/db/BootCaches.playlist 2:no such file or directory appeared; unable to start up

    I use a MacBook Pro, Mid-2009 version.
My problem started when I tried tweaking some system files via Terminal when I could no longer use Candy Bar for Mavericks. I followed the instructions here http://idevicedailys.com/os-x/howto-use-candybar-os-x-mavericks/ I was quite successful but not all of my icons changed so I downloaded the 10.9 patch for Candybar. The fix did not work, so I tried using the sudo nano /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist command again. Afterwards, I tried opening Candybar, but it would no longer open. I then restarted my Macbook, but it would no longer load into the desktop. What happens is that after loading, the cursor would show up, the screen would blink, and then the loading icon (the gray rotating thing) would show up again, and then the cursor appears. This happens again and again. At some point, the loading icon would just freeze.
I tried rebooting to safe mode, but it will not work. /var/db/BootCaches.playlist 2 cannot be found I tried accessing Terminal through the Startup Disk screen (the one you get to when you press cmd + r during reboot) but the sudo nano commands won't work anymore. Also, instead of nano, what I see in my Terminal is 'bash'
Is there still hope for my mac?
    Help is very much appreciated!

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then reinstall the OS.

  • Bootcache.playlist no such file or directory, slow booting 10.7.2

Hi guys, I have this problem after updating to Lion 10.7.2 :
There are many threads addressing a similar problem, but all the fixes mentioned there did not work (deleting bootcache and checking access rights) and also
my problem is different, because my mac boots, after all. The others had bootloops or got stuck while booting.
When booting in verbose mode, the message
BootCacheControl:Unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist: 2 No Such file or directory
appears, but the system still boots - veery slow, though (about 2 minutes)
The next time it boots, it says no bootcache can be found and it builds a new one. After that it reboots by its own, without the bootcache.playlist error message, but still slow but with no problems whatsoever.
The next boot is as the first one I described, so I my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 is looping through those problems^^
Also, the file /var/db/BootCache.playlist is definetely existent, and has the following access rights: -rw------- (600) should not be a problem, should it?
Ah, and maybe I should mention, that I am using the full disk encryption Filevault2.
I hope somebody knows what to do with this vague information!
    Thanks in advance!

i wish I had the answer; would love to find out, as it is happening to my husband's make as well.  His doesn't always boot up though.  and then he gets "disk0s2: media is not present".  Spent several hours on the phone with Apple today, and got nowhere.

    Hi,
My Macbook pro won't start, it just shows the apple logo and the spinning gear. When I tried to boot in safe mode, tha last two lines read: "

Launchctl: dubious file. Not of type .plist (skipping): /system/library/launchDaemons/com.apple.installer.osmessagetracing.plist~orig "
Can anybody please tell me what's wrong and/or how to fix this please??
    Thanks.

I attempted to open iPhoto and got this message: you can't open the application because it may be damaged or incomplete. Now the iPhoto icon has a little line through it.
Nice. Shall I say goodbye to my treasured iPhoto library? What happened?
I did just upgrade my iPhone to OS 5. Could that be related somehow?
    Help!

    1. Back up your iPhoto Library - you should always have a back up anyway.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    2. Reinstall
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • How do you burn videos taken with myIphone and stored on my computer to a DVD disc.  I purchased and tried using RealPlayer Plus 16 but got error message saying "unsopported media type"?  I alos tried using Real Players file converter with no success!

How do you burn videos taken with my Iphone 4S and stored on my computer to a DVD disc.  I purchased and tried using RealPlayer Plus 16 but got error message saying "unsopported media type"?  I also tried using Real Players file converter with no success!  Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Probably the OP is no longer paying attention to this unless the OP is subscribed to this discussion.  While not really an iPhone question I guess using an iPhone to produce the movie which then needs taking to the next step makes this as good a starting place as any unless you happen to know enough about what to do to determine in which forum to post.  A suggestion in that direction would help.
Anyway, Apple is backing off from supporting optical media.  It also depends upon what you mean by "DVD".  A DVD is just an optical disc which can support different file formats, but many people think it means a movie disc you can put in your TV.  Producing a movie disc requires special iDVD authoring software Apple used to sell but stopped several years ago.  I don't know if the old versions work under newer systems.  There's also the free Burn application which authors DVDs but takes a bit of learning and has nowhere near the features of iDVD.
If the OP means simply burning the transferred movie files to a DVD for archiving in computer format you don't need special software for that; its built into the operating system File > New Burn folder etc.

I installed a new hard drive and trying to reinstall FCP2 and on the install disc i get the following message - "You can't open the application FC Studio.mpkg because power PC applications are no longer supported"

Because you are running lion.. FCS 6 is a Power PC app and Lion doesn't support Power PC anymore.. So you can't install it.. Three options..
    1. Revert back to Snow Leopard.
    2. Purchase FCP X...
if you can't stand FCP X
    3. Call apple directly, 1800-MYAPPLE and ask to purachse FCS 3 for $999... (its FCP 7)
I just got FCS 3 today through apple phone sales..
