Help!!!! Urgent Framemaker page numbering problem

Hi there,
I have to make a last minute update to this old project that we have in Framemaker. I've never really used it before so I'm clueless!!
Problem is I have a book, it consists of several chapters, each of which seems to have a .fm extension.
I need to build a pdf and for the page numbers in it to flow from chapter to chapter. Problem I'm having right now is that chapter 1 ends on page 10 and chapter 2 begins on page 13!
This wouldn't be so bad if it even inserted a couple of blank pages in the pdf, but it doesn't so the number goes out of synch!
In the main page area where it lists all the .fm files, I've right-clicked on chapter 2, selected Numbering and selected Continue Numbering from Previous File in Book, then pressed Set. This doesn't make a different though!!
Also chapter 2 ends on page 18 and chapter 3 begins on page 21 so something isn't right.
I need to get this document finished today, if anybody could pls help it would be really really appreciated!

OK, first the theory: The book file is critical. It is a container that holds and controls the formatting of the chapter files.
If you open the component files outside the book, they'll contain page number that may be inaccurate because you're working outside the book environment.
So first, confirm the problem: In the book file, click the update icon. You'll have a dialog bos that asks if you want to regenerate the TOC and any other generated files. Click yes.
THEN, open the chapter file(s) to check the page numbering. I suspect that either the chapters have an intervening into page OR they have pagination set to open on a right side page and a blank page or two is being generated to force that -- and either problem can make the numbering appear as you've described it.
Check back in at this point and let us know what it looks like....
Cheers,
Art

  • How can I fix my page numbering problem?

I am creating a catalog in InDesign. Master pages were set up so the left and right pages had the page numbers in the lower outside corners.
Today I moved some pages around, and as a result the left side pages are now right side, and vice versa.
The problem I am facing is that on some of the pages, the page number is now in the inside corner, and on some of the pages, the page numbers are on both the inside and outside corners.  The numbering is correct, but the positions are wrong.
    I tried:
    1. Overwriting all master page items for the page, then trying to delete or move the page number, but there is a faint yellow box around the number and it cannot be deleted or removed.
    2. Applying the correct master page to the page I am trying to fix; this works in some cases, but in others it just places the new text boxes on top of the old ones.
Any help would be appreciated! I am using CS6 on a Mac. My master pages include a text box at the top, a blank box to show the page with bleed, and a page number indicator.

After I resist the temptation to ask why you're transcoding to ProRes in mid-stream, all I can come up with is:
Need more info on the error circumstances
    OR
You could batch the source clips in Compressor and start over
    OR
    Try smaller batches
    OR
Trash your prefs, repair permissions, and try again

  • Help please with Page Numbers & Facing Pages in Book Layout

I am having some dramas with my book project which is 168 pages including cover.  I have created 22 different documents for the chapters and other pages.  I had everything in a book and have been able to create a PDF, but then I needed to remove the cover so it can be printed separately and to change the page numbering to start at 1 after the contents page.
When I added numbers after the Contents page, it pushed all the pages out of order - ie what was previously sitting on the left was now sitting on the right etc.
Removing the cover also impacted on individual spreads.
    Since then I have:
    - Updated my program to resolve an issue where Indesign kept shutting down when I tried to change page numbers.
    - Recreated the book twice, but find the spreads are all out of whack as I add them - doesn't appear to be auto paginating.
    - Called Adobe and got given tutorials that have not helped me resolve the issue because I have followed the tutorials but it hasn't resolved the issues I am having.
Is there a way that you can stop autopagination and tell the pages which side they need to be on?  I currently have one chapter finishing on an even number of pages and the next starting on an odd, even though there are an even number of pages in that chapter, which is bizarre?  How do I fix this please?
I would sincerely appreciate anyone who can tell me how to fix this.  I have read and watched so many tutorials showing how to set it up but there doesn't appear to be any that help with trouble shooting when you have followed the process but something bizarre happens.
Is there a way that you can dictate the sides that the pages should be on?  Can you turn off the auto pagination anywhere?  This is an urgent request.
    Thanks,
    Hayley
PS  I started in CS6 and am now using CC.

    A few things to consider:
Not all books are the same, but many begin on page one, which is a right page, and as it follows, all odd pages will be on the right with even pages on the left. If your book had the cover as part of the book, I wonder if that meant that your first page was on the left?
Books leaves hold two pages (front and back), and therefore book page counts need to be divisible by two. You say your book is 168 pages including the cover, which you moved to another document, leaving 167 book pages. If you were counting the back page, that might make for a 166 page book, which would be OK, but depending on how it will be printed, the page count may need to be divisible by 4, 8, 16, or higher, and the printer may need to add blank pages to get to the correct page count. Can you tell us how your book will be produced?
Many people like to keep  their chapters in even-numbered page count, so that new chapters may start on the right. This sometimes requires you to have a blank left-sided page at the end of some chapters. This blank page is sometimes labeled "This page intentionally left blank" or some such wording (so as to let the reader know there wasn't a misprint), but isn't strictly necessary. Sometimes an ornament in the center of the page will do the same job.
Do you think these are things you would like to have in your book, or are you opposed to them for any reason? The answers may narrow the advise you get from the forum users.

  • Section/Page numbers problems

I have a document which I want the page numbering to start on the second page, ie. there is a title page which has no number, and then the second page has number one.
Reading through other posts about this, I have found that I have to add a section break in order to make this work, between the title page (1) and the real first page (2). But the problem is whenever I add a section break, it creates an entire blank page for the section break, so I end up with title page, blank page, real first page. Even if I have enough space, etc... every time I create a new section I get a blank page which I cannot type on or use, without deleting the section break and putting me back to square one.
Does a section break always do this (add a new blank unuseable page)?
    Please, what can I do?
(required end of post rant: I switched from MsWord thinking pages would be so much more simple... but really, WHAT THE....? Just have it be a simple thing somewhere that allows the page (or section) to start at "0")

My guess is that an object is embedded in your title page which fools the tool cuttting the document in pages because on my machine, it works flawlessly.
You may activate the "Show Invisibles" function which may help to find if there is an odd character embedded.

    NO, here it doesn't
Just have it be a simple thing somewhere that allows the page (or section) to start at "0")
It would not solve the problem because it would display the number 0 on the first page which is not what you want.
It would not solve the problem for those wanting a numbering starting on page 3 (or on page 4 …)

  • Word to PDF - Page Numbering Problems

When I use the combine files tool in Acrobat 8 for PDFing word documents instead of the page numbering being 1/3, 2/3, 3/3, it comes out as 1/1, 2/2, 3/3. I've tried looking at all the settings and cant find a logical reason for this. It also happens when I print to PDF while in Word.
Has anyone else experienced this same problem?

Here are a couple links that should help.

Displays the total number of pages for the currently processed form. This  allows you to include texts such as'Page x of y' into your output.
    &SFSY-JOBPAGES&

  • Need Help Urgently Zen Micro "Firmware Problem&qu

    Hello,
I've had my Zen Micro for a year now and due to a "screw up" when i start my player it displays the error "Firmware Problem" and start up in recovery mode. When I try to reload the firmware the update application on my pc it says "Your player is not connected" now can I fix this so I can start using my wonderful Zen again?
PC Specs If needed: Windows Media Center Service Pack 2

Thanks for the reply, but that firmware download doesn't work for me. As I said in my original post, my player is not recognized as being connected when it is. It is not my computer because Jukebox opens up when it detects the device and it is listed among my removable hardware.
I've downloaded the software, but nothing happens after the "select your language" prompt. It just says "Your player is not connected please connect your player" with a grayed out 'Upgrade' button and a darkened 'Close' button. I've tried unplugging and reconnecting the USB, but it still doesn't recognize that it's there.

  • , Page Numbering/TOC in InDesign CS5

Hi, I am using InDesign CS5 and need some help showing the page numbers for a section that will be added after printing.
I have almost completed a low volume 400+ page book (60 copies) and need some special numbering.
I am using 8 & 16pp signatures in this book. The first section is: Front Matter, the second section is for Front Text, the Center Section is a color photo album with 40pp (2-16pp & 1-8pp signatures), and the fourth section is Back Text.
The Center Section will be printed on a color printer and hand inserted at the binders. I have no problem with the numbering of all the sections, but I would like to have the center section to be included in the Table of Contents of the book. I could update the TOC manually but as I move things around that would be a lot of work and I might have errors later. I hope that I made this question clear enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would add the pages for the color section and any headings you want to include in the TOC, and simply not include it in the PDF you send to the the monochrome printer, and include only that section in a PDF for the color printer.

  • Page numbering wrong when exporting to pdf

I have a 340-page book, broken into about 40 chapters.  The chapters are set as the start of a section, and there are no section changes inside the chapters.  Theoretically, the pages should number consecutively throughout the book -- and they do, in InDesign 5.5.  But when I export to pdf, they get all screwed up.
For instance, the page numbers in Chapter 6 start correctly at #27, but the following pages are numbered like this:  28, 29, 28, 29, 28, 29, 30.  The last page number should be 35, not 30.
This happens sporadically throughout the book.
I've checked to be sure each chapter has only one section, and that page numbering is set consecutively.  In ID, all the page numbers are in order.  But once they get exported to pdf, they go crazy.
    Thanks............

Peter:  My reply above to John kind of overlaps this reply, so it might be well for you to read that, too.  You'll find there a whole list of problems I had with CS4; going back is not the answer.
I agree that one problem is that I don't have extensive experience with ID.  But I'm living on an extremely limited income, and I hoped the Creative Suite would help alleviate that.  I has done that; it has also added a great deal of frustration.  I don't have a huge IT budget to draw from.  The original outlay for CS4 was an extreme reach for me, and I didn't really have the funds for an upgrade.   How I would love to spend a few thousand dollars to fly to Pittsburgh or New York and spend a week or so immersed in an Adobe workshop!  Unfortunately, I live on a small town without such resources.  I have watched as many videos as I could find, and I have gone through several step-by-step books.  But you're right:  hands-on experience is necessary, and I'm scrambling to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can.
I would imagine you're right, too, when you say that bugs are inevitable in a complex program.  What I have trouble understanding is why they aren't fixed, especially considering the price of the program.  The problem with internal hyperlinks not working in epubs has been a known issue for some time, and according to one Adobe expert's post, the developers' attitude has been more or less, "Yep, that's a problem, all right."  But it hasn't been fixed.
Not only am I working on a limited budget, but I have made promises to clients I haven't been able to keep.  It's frustrating when clients are screaming, "Where's my book?" and I'm fighting with "known ID issues."  One novel was supposed to have been published in early October.  I was all ready to finalize it when I noticed the page numbering problem.  I feel I have spent far too much time chasing ID program bugs -- and I don't get paid for posting requests for help in the forums.
In reference to the internal hyperlink problem, I have attempted to "crack open the epub and do some fixing."  If that would work, I would have no problem; I know HTML.  But after I "rezipped" the files,  I couldn't read the result in any epub reader. I'd like to know how Ms. Castro puts its back together after cracking it open.  Perhaps it can be done with a Mac; as far as I know, it can't be done on a PC without oXygen, yet another expensive program I can't afford.   (However, after going to her website, I have decided I need to buy her book.  Thanks for that tip!)
I do appreciate your help, and I apologize for getting so impatient.  I hope you and the other moderators will be patient with me.  I'm working hard to learn as fast and as much as I can and sometimes the frustration gets overwhelming.

  • Page Numbering FM 9.0

    Hi
I am a raw newbie trying to learn FM mostly by myself.  I have a small book, which I am treating like a document, to which I would like to add page numbers.
I have the master pages set up.  I would like the regular numbering (page 1, 2 etc.) to start on the first body page, not the title or copyright page.
How do I get the first body page to count as '1'?   Right now, everything I've tried has the page count starting on the title page (although it is not visible there).
    Thanks!

If the whole book is a single document, not a collection of independent files that are collected and managed with a  FrameMaker book file, start the file's page numbering at a minus number. For example, if the first body is the third page of the document, then start the file page numbering at -2 (zero counts.)
You'll need a master page that has a place for the page numbers for body pages, and a different master page for the unnumbered pages.
If all this is new to you, search Google for "FrameMaker page numbering", "FrameMaker master pages", "FrameMaker running header" without quotes. This will return help stuff from FrameMaker's own help, from these Adobe forums, and from many other sources.

  • Will Pages allow me to insert page numbers later in the document?

I want to add the page number in my document and send electronically. But, I want page numbering to begin on the third page. When I add the page insert function, it doesn't (?) allow me to reset the page number. Certainly there is a way, please help.

    Hi EC3MKTG,
Page numbers can begin at 1 in any Section.
Menu > Insert > Section Break after the end of the second page. Then click in that Section and
    Inspector > Layout > Section > Page Numbers > Start at > enter 1
    Inspector is your friend.
It may help if you go to Menu > View > Show Invisibles to see the formatting characters such as Section Breaks (blue horizonal lines), paragraph marks, spaces, tabs...
If you have inserted any Page Breaks, it may help to delete them and let Section Breaks control the pagination.
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • Customer Statement - Page Numbers

Has anyone been able to solve the page numbering problem on the statement report?
For example: If you have page numbers visible, the report runs each page 1,2,3,4 etc, where we need to have 1st customer page 1, 2nd customer page 1 and page 2, 3rd customer page 1 etc.

    Hi,
In version 2005 there is no solution for this and unfortunately there is no workaround either as I know.

  • Distiller 8 stripping logical page numbering

A client has set up a repurposing workflow that requires us to save PDFs as Postscript, and then run new Distiller settings on the Postscript file.
When we run the process in Acrobat & Distiller 8, the logical page numbering is stripped (that is, if the first page of the original page showed as Page 19 (1 of 26), after processing it reverts to Page 1 (1 of 26)).
The client says this does not happen in Acrobat/Distiller 7, and we have confirmed this. Processing the files in Acrobat/Distiller 7 is not a very useful option for us, as most of our workstations have moved to Leopard, and therefore cannot distill files reliably using Distiller 7. We are working around the problem by manually resetting the logical page numbering in the PDFs after processing--an extra step.
Here's my question: has anyone else experienced this behavior? Any idea why the process would strip the page numbering in version 8, but not in version 7? If anyone has experienced this, have you found a setting that prevents the problem in version 8?
    Thanks very much.

    Jon,
Thanks for your reply. It's not a workflow we would have designed; the client insists upon it, however, and it does seem to get them what they want, except for the page numbering problem.
Upon testing the setting you suggest, the "Preserve Document Info from DSC" option appears *not* to preserve logical page numbering. It preserves other information--title, creation date, and time--but not the logical page numbers. It was a good suggestion, though. Perhaps that parameter was left out when the code was rewritten for Acrobat/Distiller 8...
    Yours,
    David

  • Table of Contents with Page Numbering in bi-fold brochure?

I am creating a bi-fold brochure that is a total of 10 printed pages front to back.
Is it possible to create a table of contents on the inside cover of the brochure, and have it automatically page number the other pages of the brochure, or is this only possible in the more high-end desktop publishing programs?
Thanks very much in advance for your help,
    Phil

Pages does page numbering as does most word processing software.
