HELP using a fire wire to tranfer files from my PC to my new MacBook

I just purchased a new MacBook and am trying to transfer my songs, pictures and movies from my desktop pc (windows XP) to my new MacBook. I was instructed to use a 6pin to 6pin firewire to tranfer the files from my pc to my MacBook by using the MacBook as an external hard drive. I can't seem to get my PC to recognize my macBook as an external hard drive. I have connected both firwire inputs to both computers. I have put my MacBook into firewire transfer mode by holding down "T" at the startup. When I check my PC and open my computer, I see no signs of my mMacBook. According to other discussions I have read, the MacBook should show up on the pc and I should be able to just click and drop the files into the macBook. What am I doing wrong and what should I do to successfully transfer these files from the pc to the macbook?

Not sure who told you to do this but your PC cannot read or write Mac drives. Unless you have third-party software on the PC such as MacDrive from Media Four you will not be able to transfer files this way. The following articles may help you:

  • Using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook

When using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro, that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook, will emails, contacts and calendar entries be moved to Outlook on the new MacBook or into Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

I doubt they will. But then I'm not sure as I used a migration program once about 18 years ago and totally FUBARed the system I had at that time and I've never used one again.
For me the reason to have a new system is to start fresh. Installing only program that I now use and manually copying data over from the older system.
Not sure your older version of Outlook, and the outlook mail boxes, are compatible with Office/Outlook for Mac 2011.
A better place to ask this question would be on the MS Office for Mac forums.
Hope it all works out for you.

They maybe corrupt, try transferring again from the g4. If iTunes is giving you an error then you need to authorize your computer with the same iTunes account as previously. Also, you could try exporting your iTunes library via iTunes on the g4.

  • How can i migrate my my emails  files from my PC to my new Macbook air

How can i migrate or transfer my email files from my PC to my new MacBook Air?

Here is an Apple knowledgebase article specific to your question. And here is a more general knowledgebase article about transfering data from one computer (including a PC) to a new Mac.
Not to push you away from asking questions here, but did you know that if you go to Apple's main support page (there's a button to it at the top of this window) there's a text box where you can enter a question to find knowledgebase articles? That's generally the first place I go when I have a problem.

  • Transferring files from my iBook to my new MacBook Pro

So I treated (an understatement) myself to a new MacBook Pro a few days ago after having a few difficulties with my beloved iBook G4. After I damaged the iBook's original power adapter, I managed to buy a dodgy one on eBay, which packed up and left me running on battery power.
I'm expecting my MacBook Pro to arrive any day now and I know that during the setup procedure (of OS 10.3, at least), you're given the option to transfer all your documents across from your previous Mac to a new one via Firewire. Brilliant idea, but my iBook's only got 15 minutes of power left and I have no way to charge it back up for the moment, so I somehow doubt it would hold out for the entirety of the procedure.
Basically, is there a way to launch the file-transfer wizard once Leopard is up and running? I'm paying particular attention to the transfer of all my E-mails from Mail and events from iCal.
On a similar topic, is there any way to sync iCal between the two Macs using iSync?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Kappy has written a helpful guide for PPC to Intel transition, which you can read in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6630396&#6630396
You will still need to use firewire target disk mode, but not the complete migration assistant process (which can be a problem going from PPC to Intel anyway!). Scroll down to step #4, which will tell you exactly which files you really need to transfer over for Mail and iCal.
    Hope this helps...

  • Transferring Files from a PC to my new Macbook

    Hi Everyone,
I just bought a new Macbook and am waiting for it to be delivered. All I want to transfer from my old PC are my photos, videos and music files. I was using an external hard drive with my old PC, is it as easy as transferring those files I want from my PC to the external hard drive and then to the Macbook? I have been using that external hard drive to back up all the data on my PC already, will the fact that is was formatted for PC cause me any issue trying to transfer to the Macbook?
    Thanks,
    Ben

Well... it depends on the "format" that you used. By default, if you are using an external hard drive under Windows, it will usually format as NTFS. OS X "can" read from NTFS formatted drives, but it cannot write to NTFS drives without third party software (this is mostly due to licensing issues with Microsoft). An external drive formatted in FAT32 can be read and written to by both Windows and OS X (although FAT32 has a single file size limit of about 4GB). If you just want to read the data from your external drive, you're fine regardless of the format. If you want to be able to share the external drive between your PC and Mac (and write to the drive with both OSes), you'll need to go with FAT32 or use a 3rd party app that will let your Mac write to NTFS.

  • HT4796 Transfer files from older mac mini to new macbook pro: incompatible ports

I have an older Mac Mini with only USB ports.  I just bought a MacBook Pro with thunderbolt and USB 3 ports.  I need to transfer my data to my new MacBook Pro using the Migration Assistant but the direct connection ports are not compatible.  How can I do this?

Use FireWire, Ethernet, or wireless. The first two can be adapted to a Thunderbolt port.

  • What is the best way to transfer files from Windows XP to a new MacBook Pro?

I am about to make the switch from PC to Mac, but I am not completely sure how I should transfer all of my old files (Word docs, PowerPoints, Excel Sheets, pictures, etc.) over to the new Mac. I read this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796, and it said to download Windows Migration Assistant. It says that a new user account will be created on the Mac containing all of the transferred material. I assume that I can just pull stuff from the newly created account and put it on the main or administrative account? Also, I assume that I can delete the created account after I get everything that I want off of it, but I am new to the whole Mac thing and assuming never gets anyone anywhere. One more thing, I do not want to transfer over my email accounts from Outlook because there is some kind of problem with the way they are set up. I want to just start them completely over in Mail. The article says that the program will automatically transfer over email accounts. Is there a way to avoid that or just transfer stuff manually? If anyone has transferred files this way before, I would really appreciate any insight you can give me. Thanks!

Best way would be NOT to use any sort of migration program, just copy the files over and place them in the same Music, Pictures, Documents folders on the Mac like it is on Windows.
All you need a external USB drive you can pick up at any office or computer store, I would advise powered and either the same size or larger (not too big) than your boot drive on the Mac. So later you can make a clone of OS X, as there is NO system restore on a Mac.
Most drives are formatted MBR with a FAT32 (named "MSDOS" in Apple's Disk Utility) and can be read on a Mac just as easily.
If for some reason your external drive has been already formatted by Windows into NTFS format, then a Mac can't read it without paying for more software and having to hassle with updates, it not working etc. So format the external drive FAT (FAT32) or even exFAT on the PC first (exFAT needs a free download from Microsoft on XP machines)
When you connect the drive, simply drag and drop your files right into the same folders, this way you can control what comes over and what stays.
If you want a free program that can open your Office files without having to pay for OfficeMac, then the free LibreOffice is available and works great.

  • How do I move just my iPhoto files from Time Machine into my new Macbook Pro system without loading the whole former identity?

I don't wan to load my entire former user ID onto my new system. iPhoto keeps saying "The iPhoto library is a Time Machine Backup, and so cannot be used as the main library. Reopen iPhoto with the Option key held down to choose another library."
The only option is to close that window then and relaunch iPhoto as suggested with Option held down... that still will not allow me to put the pics in, however.  Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • I just used a firewire connection to transfer files from an older MAC to a newer MAC. My newer MAC has lost all that was on it, and all the applications are opening like they have never been used before and asking for Rosetta. Help!!!

I just used a firewire connection to transfer files from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has lost all that was on it, and all the applications are opening like they have never been used before and asking for Rosetta. How do I find all my files on the MacBook Pro, or undo what I have done???

IGNORE the last post: he thought you are using Lion or Mountain Lion.
Since you are using Snow Leopard, you need to install Rosetta.  It can be found on your Snow Leopard Install DVD in the Options section.
Once installed all should be well again.
Also, if your computer is connected to the internet when the Dialog Box about PowerPC applications comes up, it MIGHT allow you to download Rosetta from the internet.  There has been some discussion that Apple has discontined internet download of Rosetta into Snow Leopard.
Someone else will have to address your lost files problem.

  • Can't transfer files from my PC to my new Mac over our wireless network

I have a Linksys WRT54G router connected to a cable modem, which is connected to a desktop PC. I have a Dell laptop connected to the internet wirelessly, and my MacBook Pro is also connected to the internet wirelessly. No problem there, the internet works on both.
However, I'm trying to transfer my files from the Dell to my new MacBook, and I get to the point where it asks for my username and password. I've typed in everything I can think of, and the Mac gives me Error -43, 'something or other is not found'.
I don't remember ever assigning myself a username or password when I set up the wireless network. I've had no problem connecting to the Internet with the Dell laptop, but have never been able to share files or a printer with the desktop PC to which the router is connected.
    What's going on here?

That would be the username & password of the user account on the Mac.

  • I used to be able to download files from the Harddrive of my Sony Handycam, but now it won't let me import them while going through "log and transfer."  I have tried to update my settings, but this doesn't seem to work.  Any help would be much appreciated

Hard Drive:  The Hard Drive is on my camera (Sony Handycam)
Just needed some info on what is going on with your particular system.
Knowing the exact camera model will also assist us.
If this camera is standard AVCHD you should be able to connect with USB to Mac with FCE open and use Log and Transfer without all the fiddling around converting etc.
What FCE does during ingest is convert files to AIC. (Apple Intermediate Codec)
FCE cannot read the individual files in the BDMV folder, that's why all the converting is required when you use that method.
BTW: regards formatting drives/cards/memory on cameras; it is wise to use the actual device to format rather than a computer. This is a prime cause of read/write goof ups with solid state media. This applies to still or video cameras.
Keeping the COMPLETE card/memory structure in tact is vital for successful transfers.
