Help: Usual BT incompetence

Like everyone else on here, I'm caught by BT's lethargic incompetence. My phone line with broadband went down three weeks ago. I had three or four Inidan ladies in broken English for several days not telling me anything helpful. Then a week after reporting the fault, the local Openreach engineer turned up out of the blue. Luckily, I was in. He diagnosed the fault as on the cable or telephone pole across the main road from my house, which would need traffic lights to reach. By uttering the magic word COMPLAINT, I was passed to BT's Resolution Centre at Lincoln, but to no avail. I've spoken to three levels of management, all of whom have told me that they could do nothing to speed up Openreach, even claiming this was a separate company. I'm not being given any regular feedback. The last I know is that a roads surveyor is due to inspect the site sometime next week. I've checked the OfCom site and asked Lincoln to enable me to make a formal Official Complaint, but the senior manager there professed not to have heard of this. And I find the obscure link on BT's site to get the form, surprise,surprise, doen't work. Does anyone have any idea how to get some action? And who does one complain to if BT wilfully ignores OfCom rules in facilitating me making an official complaint?

Help please! (This should be easy)

Ok, so my father set up our printer on the wireless network yesterday. His windows based computer can print fine with it. I'm trying to get my Apple to work with it now. I have a word document up, and I select to add a new printer, I search for it, find it, add it, and then print. Everything seems okay so far, but instead of printing my document, it prints 12 blank pages, and 1 page with randomly assorted letters (code?) on it. Sooooooo.... what should I do? Thanks!!

Eh, getting help usually means someone has had a similar issue, and also makes forays into these discussion boards.
That being said, I've never had that problem, but I'll try to help...
So, I'm assuming the printer software is installed on your Mac? Or it's one that is already compatible with your computer. I guess you should check your printing options that pop up when you try to print. If everything seems ok there, I'd try downloading drivers from the printer company's website and reinstalling the drivers.

EPSON InkJet 4800 Pro, problems, please help!

I was setting up an EPSON InkJet 4800 Pro on my client's network yesterday, I managed to successfully set it up on the network with Bonjour network, They had two systems running Leopard 10.5 over Wireless, One system running Tiger 10.4 connected via ethernet directly into the modem/router, I managed to download the latest the drivers and install them on these systems, all working great.
When it came time to install the driver on Snow Leopard, all seemed to work fine, added the printer (seems to have the right version), Though when I print it comes up with the error message:
"/library/printers/EPSON/inkjetPrinter/filter/raster/rastertoescp.app/contents/M acOS/rastertoescp failed"
I thought it could of had something to do with Rosetta not being installed, so I made sure it was installed by doing an optional install off the Snow Leopard disc twice, now im stumped and my client is without a printer, if anyone has any solution or advice it'd be really appreciated!
I have spoken to EPSON continually and they really don't seem to be much help, usually rude most of the time. My next step is to possibly call apple.

Please try resetting the printing system by:
1. Control-click or right-click a print queue in the ""Printers"" pane.
2. Choose ""Reset printing system..."" from the contextual menu.
3. Click ""OK"" in the ""Are you sure..."" confirmation sheet.

If all of this doesn't work you can see if the issue is with the user account or system wide by creating a new OSX user account and see if that user has the same issue.

Installation problem, pls help

I am trying to install Oracle 10g on SUSE 10.0.0 but when i run the ./runInstaller command, I receive an[b] error of writting to directory /tmp/OraInstall2006-03........, Please ensure this directory is writable and at least 60MB of disk space, i have checked for space using df -h /tmp, there is enough space, i think the problem has got to do with permission because @ the moment it belongs to root user, i don't know what to do, i am a novice to unix and need to install oracle today. Pls help
Usually the standard install of SuSE Linux should set the ownership and access rights to /tmp, if you want to give access to everyone on the system, just use this command (if owner/root access is available):

Ipod not recognized by iTunes or computer?????

For two days now my ipod has not been recognized by my computer. I used my brother's old Ipod charger to charge my Ipod but it kept unplugging and replugging the Ipod on its own. When I got a different charger later that night, my Ipod was charging but a message popped up saying "USB device not recognized". My Ipod doesn't show up in iTunes anymore either. I tried restarting my computer but that didn't help (usually never does). I don't want to reset my Ipod if it still can't be recognized afterwards. Somebody please help me!

IMovie Crashes At Start Up

I currently have an older Powerbook g4 running on 10.3.9, so I use imovie4. It's been working well up until last night. A few days ago, it was running fine, now whenever I launch iMovie, it immediately crashes. I tried restarting thinking it could be just some strange glitch, but after the restart, it still continued to crash. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? I'm not sure what to do. Just "googling" the issue didn't really help (usually I can fix something myself if I find it online); I think because my operating system is so outdated, there really isn't much for imovie4 in general. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I really need to be able to use it again as I am currently in the process of working on my wedding slideshow. Thank you!

Why can't I set my downloaded .dm ringtones as text and email notifications?

I have an HTC Incredible 2; I paid for and downloaded several ringtones from the Verizon store, two of which I wanted to specifically use as the text and email notification sounds. I then had the already discussed problem of not being able to find the newly downloaded ringtones immediately, but from the postings on here and the Adriod forums, I followed the directions to set up the folders titled Ringtones, Notifications, and Alarms on my sdcard, and moved the downloaded ringtones into their respective folders. When I opened up the Personalize menu, under Sounds I was immediately able to find the ringtones I'd placed in the ringtone folder, but my phone wouldn't recognize the ringtons I'd placed in the Notifications folder.
I downloaded the app Zedge, downloaded specific Notification sounds (.mp3, and they work). I also downloaded .mp3 ringtones and then moved them into the Notifications folders, and THAT worked. The problem seems to be that these are .dm files? Is my phone unable to read .dm files as Notification sounds? Or is there something I missed? Something else I can do?
I looked all over for software that will convert .dm files to .mp3, found a suggestion calling for the deletion of a couple of the lines of code from within the .dm file using Notebook ++, but that didn't work. I don't remember seeing anywhere in the store that these ringtone files come in the protected .dm filetype; that many players will not be able to play them, and that I won't be able to use them for notification sounds?
Ay one have any suggestions? Verizon: am I doing something wrong?

Usually when you purchase ringtones from the Verizon store, you can only use them as ringtones. Since you have a smartphone, an app would be the best bet. You can find almost any song you're looking for in a free ringtone app, there's no need to purchase them.

How can I programmatically determine the capabilities of a card under NI-DAQmx (e.g. max sample rate, number of AI/AO/CTR channels, etc.

Is there a DAQ_Get_Device_Info() equivalent for NIDAQmx? I need to iterate thru all the devices on my system, and build up a list of device capabilities. The system may include M-series and E-series cards.

Attached is a program I've used in the past to determine number of AI channels. It could be easily modified to check for AO or digital or counter. Also, there is a ton of properties that you have access to (i.e. max sample rate, max/min voltage inputs, etc.) that are accessed as properties of the type of channel, or timing properties, as opposed to properties of the board. Check out the DAQmx C Reference Help (Usually at Start>>All Programs>>National Instruments>>NI-DAQ). Expand the NI-DAQmx C Properties, and look at the List of Channel Properties, and Timing Properties, etc.

Everytime i open some websites, it displays the page for a while then load to another blank page.

hai. i need help. and just for heads up, i;m not computer/tech savvy.
i dont remember when this problem was started (maybe around 2 or 3 months ago) but everytime i opened some sites, the page displayed for a while then it reload itself and shown a blank page. the link is still the same with the link i tried to access, it just keep loading and shown blank page till it stop loading. refreshing the page wont help. usually i need to click 'Back' then while it shown the page i click 'X' to stop the page loading, so i can see the page.
but if i need to download files, stopping the page wont make me able to downloaded the files since the page didnt fully loaded.
the websites i encountered this was (so far) :
- Indowebster (download page)
- wiki.d-addicts.com (a wikipedia kind of page)
- photobucket (just encountered this today)
- and 1 or 2 other sites, i forgot.
but i can access all those sites just fine with IE. I also able to access it in Mozilla thru my work computer. at first this dint really bother me as i can just click 'stop loading page' or found another download sites for downloading. but as today i experienced it with photobucket 9which as far as i know didnt happened before) it made me worry that soon i would experiencing this with another sites too.

i already clear cache and cookies. also disable all extensions in my add-ons. from some discussion page, many of them found that this was caused by Real-Player. i have uninstalled Real Player and have disabled the Real Player Plugins long before this problem occured. so i dont think Real Player was the caused.

hi.. actually before i was afraid to update anything other than anti-virus, since i read many people seems updating something and turns out they got malware/virus with it.
but i have update it to Firefox 21 (the newest version it seems) and didnt encounter any problem again. and hope not. it just the new version disable my orbitdownloader. any suggestion to bring it back? (or should i post new thread?)

Table of Contents bookmarks not exporting to PDF (CS5)

I have a 200 page book made up of 15 documents. I've created a table of contents based on paragraph styles and the TOC generates and formats correctly. When I create the TOC, the Create PDF Bookmarks box is checked. When I export the whole book I've tried it with Create Tagged PDF checked and unchecked.
After I export to PDF from the Book palette, the TOC items are links (at least they give me the pointer-hand icon) but they don't go anywhere. The only one that does is the one in the same document as the TOC. (I have tried the TOC both within a chapter and also in it's own document with no other links in it). The behavior is the same in the Bookmarks pane - all are shown but only one works. I've looked at several of the bookmarks' Properties > Actions. It says its "Going to a page in another document" > (document-name-of-the-correct-chapter-but-with-pdf-instead-of-indd.pdf) > Page 1 (this is correct) > Zoom level: actual size.
This isn't right - it's pointing to an imaginary pdf that doesn't exist. It should be pointing to page X in the current document.
Here's what I've tried:
* restarting InDesign
* restarting my machine
* deleting the TOC and regenerating it
* generating the book with all documents open or all documents closed
* moving the TOC to its own document
* probably some other things I've forgotten in the struggle
All of the links and references in the individual documents are good.
I've looked around these forums and this seems to be an ongoing and unsolved issue for other folks using older versions. This is the closest I came to finding an answer but ended up with an Adobe employee logging it as a bug in 2009. Bookmarks not exporting from InDesign to PDF in CS4 By (c_goates)
So here's hoping there is some new information. I've been trying to get this to work for far too long and don't relish drawing bookmark boxes around all 55 of my text links.

There are some known problems with bookmarks and CS5 as well. As far as I know, the 7.0.3 update won't fix them, but it does solve some other problems, so you should install it.

10g w/ASM on RHEL4 with LDAP/AD db user

I'm a bit green at all this Oracle stuff (though I'm pretty experienced with Linux) and I'm currently trying to install Oracle 10g on a 64-bit RHEL 4 AS box, using ASM. This box is currently also running 9i happily. I am running into a couple of problems which may or may not be related:
Firstly, I've installed the asmlib stuff and it will all run fine (pick up and configure disks on my SAN over fibrechannel etc.) apart from the service/interface configuration - for various reasons I need to have my oracle DB user authenticate against LDAP (active directory in this instance) like all my other users do (and this works fine in 9i) - I don't expect this is a problem for the DB install itself (though I've not gotten that far - I don't have a 10g DB installed yet.) but the config script for ASM will not accept any of my LDAP users as valid, and hence won't set the appropriate permissions on the /dev/oracleasm stuff etc (and doing so manually doesn't seem to solve problem 2) - is there a way around this? Is it a restriction just of the config script or can the service just not cope with non-local users?
The second problem is that even with ASM disks configured, when I go to do an install with runInstaller, and select the configuration of ASM, it can't find any disks to add regardless of what path I give it to look in. I assume this is related to the problems with ASM above, but perhaps there's something else going on?

There are no users for ASM per se. You don't connect as Fred/fred since no-one ever logs into it directly. It's only a storage subsystem.
the only time you would connect is if you needed to go in as the SYSDBA or SYSOPER role to start it up, shut it down or do maintenance.
When it is up and running and doesn't see your disks there is a good troubleshooting note
457369.1 which might help. usually diskstring needs to be set.

Move tool issue : Command key + mouse dragging for moving any layer not working in PS CC

I'm trying to move a layer within the document by holding command key and mouse dragging (mouse cursor not above the layer) is not working at all while using move tool. Suddenly this functionality stopped working. Now I have to place my cursor on layer to be move and drag with mouse. Also pressing command key changing auto select option from layer to group.
Please help.

Usually when a tool is not working as expected, a Reset of that tool might be the answer.
Select the move tool in the toolbox,
Go to the move tool icon on the top left of the screen (just above the toolbox in its' Option bar) and Ctrl-click on it to get the Reset menu.
Click on Reset Tool.

Where is character view in 10.9.4?

I used to have in the old MacBook Air (OS 10.7.5) in the banner in the desktop window next to the computer name/date/clock/battery displays. On the new Air (10.9.4) I got nada. I went through system prefs, lightly googled, found nothing on "help," etc. Is it just gone in this version? I need it because I used accents in Mail, Word, Safari, etc.

The item used to be accessed from System Preferences> International> Input Menu.
Should be there -or in similar location- even now... Did you try a search?

DVD Burn Errors

I have an older PB15 with a UJ-816 burner, 2x max read and write. In the last 2 years, I've burned about 500 disks with variable results.
Most of them have been TDK. These usually work fine except that on some spindles I get errors and have to burn at 1X.
Apple disks always work fine.
I bought some Memorex 8X disks at Frys ($10/25 disks) and these have been giving me fits.

I can't remember seeing this collection of errors on other media. What is even odder is that these won't work at 1X at all, I have to try at 2X to get any good results at all. Perhaps 1/3 of the burns fail even at 2X. The last 4 burns in a row have failed.
I've gone through a bunch of the really cheap Fry's "Great Quality" media with no errors at all.
Is Memorex known to be a bad brand?

I have heard that 2x speed is somewhat "problematic" than other burn rates... and that you have to buy a media that specificaly mentions burning at 2x (I think in reality it's like 2.4x? and that causes some weirdness), or else sometimes it will not work.
I read this somewhere. can't rememebr where. Try buying media where the label specifically mentions 2x and see if that helps (usually you'll have to find a media that is rated slower, which is getting harder to find..)
I use memorex a lot, and it's pretty reliable, at least on my drive, but that doesn't mean much since DVD-RWs are so finicky. (as good as other media I've used. TDK, Fuji, maxell, memorex). the only coasters I've made form memorex are user-induced. I've heard Apple uses Maxell.. you might want to look at their stuff. don't use GQ. I made more coasters using that brand than all others combined.

Pages wont load, links become inactive

Hello, I have had this issue for a while and I have finally decided to ask for some help, usually I can find answers to my problems but am a bit stumped on this one.
My issue is this:
I do a search, right click link and open in new tab - works 80% of the time. ok other 20% page wont open just stuck. Whats interesting though is I have found if I refresh the google search page I can then open the link fine, - the first open page is still sitting there spinning around, sometimes when the link opens this will kick the first try into finding the site. Now it has been getting worse. Now links on web pages becoming inactive as in i click on the link and nothing happens, right click and it does not have open in new tab ect. Its as though the page has lost all of it connections to the internet. sometimes when i refresh the page after a link not working it will open the linked page? bizarre.
I have done a lot of research on this and have done things like clear the cache,
uninstalled and reinstalled firefox,
changed to new profile,
and a myriad of other things mainly in regards to pages wont load.
does this happen in other browsers, I barely use other browsers so haven't noticed that it does.
I use ghostery and ad block plus, ad block pop up, ad block is set to exclude google.
does this happen on other computers with firefox on my wireless network? not as much sometimes pages wont load but can put that down to internet or wireless issues.
I cant rule out it being a browser issue because when pages wont load from google links i can open bookmarks and the pages load as well as links from them out to the internet, and the page open via google still sits on spinning, try the link again and again and still wont load.
Could it just be a bad link? it happens far too often for the internet to have that many bad links.

Ad block plus and ghostery have used this and updated for a long time with out these issues.
Issues only started with the last couple of firefox updates.
something of interest is that this issue started around the time we upgraded to adsl 2+ from adsl and got a new modem, but the internet is still connected and I can still surf from the bookmarks so that could be just a coincidence so I still cant rule out a browser issue.
oh does the page time out - eventually yes but takes a long time, I do see it saying waiting for fonts.google or other such things but tried all of those fixes and nothing helps.
I hope I have been able to get my issue across.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
