Help Viewer Window - always in front?

Is there a way to get the Help Viewer Window so that it is not always in front in OS 10.6.2?

They stay in front because most people want to view the information while working on something. It's hard to follow a list of instructions when you constantly have to pull the viewer to the front each time.
It would appear that iTweaX option for the viewer does not work. Mac Pilot does not have the configuration. I've checked several other utilities none of which support the option for SL. I guess the option worked in Leo but does not work in SL.

  • Help viewer window

Whenever I open the help (under the Help menu item for any program) the window opens and is on top of all other windows open in the finder and always remains on the top. It did not do this previously in 10.4, is there a way to make it like a normal window and gets covered when you click on something else or drag a window over it?

Hmmm! When the Help Viewer pops up, Help Viewer should be displayed in the left-hand menu bar, and CMD+Q should quit it an close the window. Sorry, I can't help with the fat-fingering problem.

  • Windows always in front

hey guys, this is probably a dumb questions, but when i have ichat windows open, they are always in front of everything else. for instance, i have safari open, but can't see half the webpage cause the ichat window is in the way. is there a way to change this? i looked in preferences but didnt see it. I could have just missed it though. thanks!

Turn off that setting in Chax.
You can set at each iChat Window so you will probably have to deselect it window by window.

  • Stage.nativeWindow.alwaysInFront how to keep the window always in front

Hi, I've just written and application that needs to always be in front of the other applications. I have set the application's nativeWindow.alwaysInFront property to true, but, after a few other air applications open the application will get pushed behind. It seems to work when the first application opens up, but after opening a second time it will no longer be on top. Any suggestions? Thanks.

One way is to browse your iTunes Music Library in the Finder and open the video file with QuickTime instead of playing it in iTunes. Then you have always-on-top and also fixes the "full screen on 2nd monitor" problem. Maybe not ideal, but a workaround.

  • Book icon in Help Viewer is missing

Hi, I'm developing help for OS X 10.7.5. The book icon is not showing up in the Help Viewer window. Instead, the icon for a missing graphic appears (a question mark).
The help bundle is set up according to directions in the Apple Help Programming Guide:
The Info.plist file is in the help bundle Contents folder.
The helpIcon.png is located in the help bundle's Contents/Resources/shared folder.
Info.plist specifies the HPDBookIconPath key as shared/helpIcon.png.
The book icon showed up in help developed prior to Lion. The configuration of the Resources folder has been the same for years.
Has anyone else had this problem?

  • "Help viewer cannot open this content"

In iPhoto '09 Help window I would get the following error message when I tried viewing any topic:
"Help viewer cannot open this content"
Problem solved with help from "Apple Expert" phone support following these steps:
    1. reboot in safe mode - I think this clears system cache and runs a disk repair utility
    2. reboot
    3. delete ~/Library/Caches
    4. empty trash
    5. log out
    6. log back in
    7. empty trash
Apparently the problem was caused by a corrupt cached file.

    This worked for me.
    From http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html#Anchor-Reset-35882
Quit Help Viewer if it is open. Leopard users should click the red Close button in the upper-left corner of the Help Viewer window. Users of Tiger and earlier can press the Command-Q (Quit) keyboard shortcut.
Trash the following three files in your Home > Library > Preferences folder, if extant:
    * com.apple.help.plist
    * com.apple.helpui.plist
    * com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Trash the following two folders in your Home > Library > Caches folder, if extant:
    1. com.apple.helpui folder
    2. com.apple.helpdata
    Empty the Trash.
Test that Help Viewer is now operating normally.
Sell Apple stock before the market gets wind of this.

  • How to fix the positions of two Mail.app viewer windows on the screen?

I use Mail.app as my main IMAP Mail application. I work with two Mail viewer windows which I position on the screen so that the upper window shows the Inbox and the lower window the Send-box. The windows are aligned to each other and do not overlap. Fine.
But when I quit Mail.app and open the program again, the windows have forgotten their postions. They "jump" to a new location on the screen. This is in contrast to all other applications I use. Another bad example of window managment is the Mail.app-Preferences window which also does not stick to a given position.
Is this a (known?) bug or does it only happen on my Macs? (two: one in the office, one at home, both running 10.4.6)

I guess the difference is that my description text is longer.
Try this text for a new rule:
"From: blacklisted senders 1 - move to SPAM-blacklisted-addresses"
When you want to see this text completely with the default font, you will need to enlarge the Preferences window for "Rules". After that, click to "Signatures": the window stays at the enlarged width. Then click on any of the other areas in Preferences, and the window goes back to the "normal" width. When you then click on either "Signatures" or "Rules", the Preferences window will stay at the "normal" width (resulting in a truncated display of the rule description text).
Also: when you have moved the Preferences window to a position not covered by a (large) viewer window to access it with a mouse click, close the window and re-open Preferences, it is back to a position covered by the viewer window. Again not accessible when the viewer window is the front-most Mail.app window. BTW: the "Activity viewer" window does a better job in sticking to a fix position.

  • Opening a new browser window always puts a flv-file (0bytes of a youtube vid viewed earlier) on desktop. Firefox 18.02

Opening a new browser window always puts a flv-file (0bytes of a youtube vid viewed earlier) on desktop. Firefox 18.02
viewed the yuotube vid yesterday. deleted all the flv-files on the desktop.
same thing today, a new window always puts the same empty file from yesterday.
    any suggestions?

You can check the home page setting:
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Help windows always foremost

I use Help frequently, particularly with a new system but also with applications. In Leopard the Help window is always on top. Often I find myself in the position of wishing to keep the Help file available but have an application window come to the front to work in the app. While the window of said app will become active the Help window always floats on top. I find it very annoying.
Is there a preference to change that behavior? A hack?
    thanks

I too think this behavior is goofy in the extreme. You have the Help window open so you can work back and forth between Help and whatever you are doing: if the Help window is always on top you can't see what you are trying to do. What were they thinking? I was unable to find any way to fix this, although there might be such a way by modifying a plist somewhere and tell it to turn off always frontmost. Afraid I'm not enough of a hacker to know how one would go about this. Let's hope somewhere there is such a hacker who is annoyed enough to do it. You can't even hide the thing, it is always frontmost and will not hide, the best you can do is minimize it to the Dock. Sent feedback to Apple about this:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html/
At the moment that's best we can do.

  • Files Window always displays in front

Since upgrading to CC (might have also been an issue in CS6, can't remember), the files window always displays as the top window. I like to have it fill a good portion of my monitor so that I can easily see the ftp file next to the local files and also view dates of files. If I want to work in a particular file I have open, I have to close out my sites window. More so, when I leave Dreamweaver open in the background and switch to another application, the files window will still display over top of everything else on my monitor.
Is there any way to change this behaviour or should it be reported as a bug. I am working on an iMac running Mountain Lion.

    Hi Amikin,
Can you provide a video cast of what you are experiencing?
You can use jing as its free and fast to set-up so I can help investigate this further for you.

  • Help Window stays in front

Allways the window of Mac-Help stays strong in front at Leopard, but I would like to chance to other windows too, without closing Help-window or dragging it out of screen.
    How that to manage?
    Thanks for help!

New behavior in Leopard. Apple thinks, since the help viewer connects to its servers to update knowledge base articles, that you should quit it before continuing. If you want this behavior changed, submit a bug report or enhancement request (ER) to Apple via its Bug Reporter system. Join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. You'll get a get a Bug (ER) ID number; thus, starting a dialog directly with engineering.

  • Why are iTunes, View, Window, and Help menu items disabled?

I am frequently encountering an issue in iTunes 10.5 (141) where all the menu items in the iTunes, View, Window, and Help menus are disabled (greyed out). Why is this happening and can it be stopped?
I've seen this issue on different Mac OS X 10.7.2 machines. It seems to occur during playlist manipulation, where I'm making new playlists, adding items to them and editing them and the items. In the worst cases, I'm forced to quit and restart iTunes, although I have to quit by using the context menu option in the Dock as the Quit option is disabled in the application.
I'd appreciate any advice on workarounds for this that don't involve quitting and restarting iTunes.

I'm also having the same issue.  It was happening with 10.5.1 and now still with 10.5.2.  I'm using a 2008 iMac running 10.6.8.  I do not use iTunes Match.  This seems to happen for no apparent reason i/o/w, I can't determine a pattern as to when it happens, but it occurs about once in every 10 times that iTunes is open and it seems to happen after it's been open for a while, but again, no particular pattern.
Sometimes, all the menu items are grayed out, and other times, 70% of the menu items are grayed out.  I can still use the other functionality in iTunes, but must must Quit from the dock (it quits gracefully and no Force Quit is necessary).  Relaunching restores eveything to normal for about a week.
I work with technical diagnostic issues and can usually pinpoint a problem, isolate an issue, or determine a pattern, but this one has me stumped. I thought 10.5.2 might fix it, but no.  Maybe 10.5.3?

  • Search in Help Viewer always returns "No matching help topics were found".

    Hi!
    I'm running 10.3.9 on 14" iBook G4.
Recently re-installed OSX from CD after a hard disk replacement. Help viewer was fine on the original / old installation of the same version number of OSX.
The CD installs a version earlier than 10.3.9. Possibly 10.3.4? Cannot recall... is this important?
After HDD replacement, went through all the updates fairly rapidly, and arrived at version 10.3.9. Excellent! Except one thing (there may be more, but I've only discovered this so far!)... searches in Help Viewer return the same message irrespective of what I search for. I type the search string (e.g. "dvd" ) in the search bubble in the Viewer window. The message is as follows:
[bouyancy aid with question mark logo] No matching help topics were found
I have tried the usual things, without success, of:
    - Removing the Famous Four cache and preference files/dirs.
    - Repairing permissions. This repaired a few 'permissions'.
    - Rebooting.
I think the icon of the bouyancy aid is a comic irony, but very well suited to my situation. Anyone out there with any suggestions on how to fix, please?
    RSJ

    Excellent pointers, thanks!
I haven't quite got it working, yet, but have got it to a point that is better than nothing.
Very peculiar -- discovered that, after trying many of the troubleshooting ideas without success, the solution was to hit the "back" icon on the viewer to get to the list of help topics satisfying my search criteria... cannot work out why. It would appear that, for some reason, the viewer is skipping the page with the help topics, and going directly to the "No topics found" page. Curious. I am wondering if one of the above activities (from your help pages) may have helped.
Anyway. Thanks very much for your help on this, and your *very* rapid responses.
    Yours most impressed,
    RSJ.
