HELP! Virgin modem in UK - fails to talk to Time Capsule

My previous Virgin modem (Scientific Atlanta) was connected to my Airport Time Capsule and worked perfectly well.
Virgin sent me a new modem (just better performance I understand) recently. I did say to them that I'd heard there were some problems with this new modem and the Macs, but I was assured there were no issues....why did I believe them??
They have registered the new MAC address for the new modem (that activates it) and the new modem itself is working fine (Virgin's modem, but says it is made by Ambit) and if I connect this old 10.4.11 MacBook Pro, I can get online and look for a solution (no luck so far) and create this post.
The Time Capsule (version 7.4.1) is also working fine and sending out the signal, but the two don't appear to be talking to each other!?
The Network Diagnostics report shows the three top Airport signals/settings as Green positive dots, but the ISP and internet connections below that are Red dots.
When the Airport Utility window comes up (saying it has a problem) and I run through each page to try and remedy, I get to a stage where it states:
"The Apple wireless device doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to the internet."
But there are two spaces below and one does have a DNS address in there (10.0.1.1).
But if I click continue, the problem doesn't appear to have been resolved and it justs asks me to restart the modem... I do but it makes no difference and it's just a repetetive cycle after that!
I need my computer online to work, so I am really stuck now. Virgin wipe their hands of this under the basis they do not support 3rd party routers... thanks a lot Virgin!!
So any help on this would be v.much appreciated - thanks Mac people!

Hi Duane - thanks for taking the time to post.
Yes, I powered off the modem every time and even did them in sequence, i.e. switched on the modem first, waited till it powered up fully, then powered up Time Capsule and then the MacPro.
If switch from my laptop to my daughter's laptop (both Macs) using the ethernet cable, I have to restart the modem as it just doesn't connect. So I know your comment is correct.
I wonder if it would work if I reset the TC (factory settings) and then try and connect the modem again? As I'm sure it's something to do with the settings on TC - would I manually need to input a DNS setting as it's requesting?

will my time capsule do the job or do i need another modem?
The Time Capsule is only a router...with a built in hard drive. It does not have a modem built in, so you will need to use a separate modem with your new calbe service.
If the cable provider offers a modem with their service it would be good idea to use that device, as you know that it will be supported by your provider in the event of any Internet connection difficulties.
If the provider does not offer a modem, I am sure that they have a list of compatible modems on their website, or check with customer support for more information.

  • HT3728 My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home network each day (intermittently) between about 1000-1800. My modem is working properly, and I can get on-line by hooking my computer straight to my modem, so I know it's the Time Capsule at fault. I

My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home wireless network for several hours each day -- usually between 1000-1830 or so. My modem is working correctly and I can still get on-line by going straight from my computer (MacBook Pro) to the Ethernet port. It must be the Time Capsule -- any ideas?

    Any ideas?
    Wireless Interference
Might be caused by a cordless phone in the vicinity. To give you an example, my neighbor.....across the street...used to be able to literally crash my wireless network if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
I discovered this by accident one day after spending weeks trying figure out why my network would crash at random times.
Other possibilities include a wireless security/camera system near you
Still other things might be an amateur ham radio operator....which should not interfere....but again from experience, I know that this can occur.
Yet another possibility is another wireless network near you that is being turned on and off at random times. Some users power up their modem/router only when they want to do so and leave it off otherwise.
Some general rules to help avoid interference:
Move any cordless phones that you might have as far away as possible from the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid placing other electronic devices....computer, television, amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. near the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid metal surfaces near the Time Capsule and/or your computers
Elevate the Time Capsule as much as possible. Think of it as a water sprinkler....you want to get the room as wet as possible
Experiment with different wireless channels on the Time Capsule. To do this:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click on the Time Capsule
    Click Edit
    Click the Wireless tab
    Click Wireless Options
Start with Channel 11 on the 2.4 GHz band and work your way down
It is unlikely that you are picking up interference on the 5 GHz band since there are.....for now at least.....far fewer networks using this frequency.

  • From Nabil Houlika Germany. Please help me by answering the following questions. The Time Capsule suddenly went dead. What should I do? Is there a way to put it "ON" again??

Yesterday the time capsule light went off. All efforts to put it on again failed. All electric connections are in good order and working perfectly. Please help me.

    Hi again,
I called them this morning. Admits my allergies and sneezing I was able to talk to them.
They will replace it with basically no questions asked.
I guess also having a MBP under AppleCare also helped too as the case is registered under that.
They gave me a few options.
The could take my credit card number as insurance and send me a new one and them I send them my dead one back, or I could take it into an Apple Store for a replacement there. The problem is that I have data on there that I want to maintain, so they said take it to the Apple Store or an Apple Service provider and they would handle the transfer.
I don't have an Apple Store in my city, but have a Service Provider that I know that could do the transfer for me, but I kinda want to do it at the Apple Store because maybe then they would give me a new one instead of another w year tombstone.
So I need to weigh my options.
I'll let you know further what happens.
P.S. my serial number was not in the range listed, but that didn't seem to make a difference. I think the key is to be courteous, respectful and friendly.

Do a google around for that printer and airport usb.. (since airport is more common).
    eg. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1785847?start=0&tstart=0
Not all printers work or work well through usb print server.. often the drivers are just not written for remote usb connection. Or the printer is GDI type and actually needs direct connection to process the job.
Proper network inkjet printers are cheap.. keep the Canon connected to a computer if you want.. and get a wireless or ethernet network printer.. do not use the USB.. use the printers own internal print server.. and these days make sure it does airprint if you want to use iOS devices.
Remember the printer is cheap.. the companies make all their money on blades ink cartridges. Which they now add chips to, to prevent you cheating and buying OEM types.

  • Macbook sporadically fails to connect to Time Capsule

I've searched high and low for a solution, but I haven't even been able to locate any other mention of this exact problem, so I figured I'd ask here.
Ever since I got my Time Capsule set up, it has worked perfectly as a wireless router. My internet connection is flawless. However, as an external drive, I am so far less than pleased. I can connect to it, browse the files, and perform Time Machine backups...sometimes. But for reasons unbeknownst to me, it frequently disconnects, and then sometimes is unable to connect again.
For example, right now, when I open up Finder and click on my Time Capsule in the sidebar, the first thing I notice is that the icon next to the TC name is not a picture of a TC, but of an iMac. If I click "Connect as," it tries to connect for a while, then says "Connection failed" and pops up a window with "The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again." I also cannot print wirelessly. However, as I said, //something// is clearly functioning properly, because I am connected to the internet flawlessly.
As a side note, just in case it's relevant, the worst part of this problem is that I store all my music on my Time Capsule. Apart from being very scary in and of itself to be unable to access my music and unsure if it's still okay, every time my TC disconnects, iTunes stops working and reverts its settings back to use the Music folder on my Macbook's HD, which is, of course, empty.
I would very much appreciate any help anyone has to give, and feel free to let me know if you need more information from me. Thanks!

I know your pain. I have had a third party supplier/rep trying to help me with this as long as I have had my Time Capsule.
Previously I used an Airport extreme with a 500gb Lacie miniHub that I connected via firewire to use as a file server. It worked great...for a while. then I could not connect after an Apple upgrade.
So just as I was trying to figure out how to get all of the Mac's in the office to be able to share a drive and it's contents wirelessly Time Capsule came out. I bought a 1T version. Everything was set up just like the directions indicate and the supplier/rep did the work. It worked great and was fast. As you, I have no problems with internet access or screen sharing etc...
However, I bought this product primarily for the "server grade" 1T drive so that I could use it as a file server. I may at some point use it to back up as well, but not right now.
I have the same problems as you and I hear that there is an update coming that may fix the problem.
Anyone else with suggestions or problems like we are experiencing?

  • Time Machine "backup failed" Backing up to Time Capsule (first backup)

I just received my iMac (24", 3.04 ghz, 4 gig ram) a few days ago...my firs Mac, after over 20 years with pc's. All working fairly well, as I try to learn the new format. Attempted my first backup last night using Time Machine, backing to Time Capsule. As I went to bed, it stated it was "preparing". This morning it stated "backup failed". "Time Capsule error". The networking aspects of Time Capsule are working without a problem. Unfortunately, the error message is vague and I'm definitely illiterate when it comes to much of the properties of a Mac. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed in investigating the problem? Thanks!!

Well, I greatly appreciate the earlier advice. I have learned much in my reading. Of course, now with my "tinkering", I determined that the Time Capsule was not formatted to OS extended (journaled) as was my Macintosh harddrive. (Don't really understand why it would not come that way). I attempted to format using disk utility, now it doesn't show up in that application and under FINDER (shared devices), it is detailed as "sharepoint". I read elsewhere that it was recommended to use airport utility to reformat to OS Extended (journaled). Anyway, of course, now I've gone full circle and am comfused as to the proper way to have it formatted properly and recognized by disk utility. As such, currently I cannot use it for backup.
Frequently, I'm my worsed enemy! Thanks again for the advice.

  • Transferring files from failing world book to time capsule.

I have a old world book that im assuming is starting to fail. It will only stay powered on for 20 minutes or so and then power itself off and the only way to get it back on is to unplug the power cord and plug it back in. I am a ever progressing amatuer photographer and upgrading all of my back up capabilities so as to not have this problem again.
I dont get to open my new Airport Time Capsule until Xmas morning and wondering if anyone has gone through a similiar problem and could offer advice.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
    Charles

How are your files backed up on the WD drive?
    Is it Time Machine backup?
Or do you have your photos raw in directories? Or is it an iphoto etc library.
How do you intend to use TC in the future? Are you going to do TM backups? Are you going to mix that with data like photos. Are the backups and the original files going to be on the same disk.. in which case it is no backup at all??
You need to copy the files as quickly as possible during the time the WD stays up..
That means directly to the computer or to a USB drive plugged into the computer.. do yourself a favour and buy another Christmas present.. a 3TB usb drive.. I see them for $99 now.. cheap as chips.
Copying over network to network is slow.. Once you have all the files on the USB drive you can then copy it to the TC at your leisure.
Take note of mixing data and backups.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Read through a bit of pondini so you know what it does.

  • I've just changed my modem, and I can't find my time capsule

I've just changed my bigpond modem, and have joined all my other hardware to the new modem (Apple TV, iphones, iMac etc), but now my time machine can't locate my time capsule which was used as a back up.  it just doesn't appear in Airport Utilities.  Have rebooted everything, and the internet connection is fine, but that **** amber light won't stop blinking.

I'll guess that "bigpond" unit is either a router or a combination modem and router.  You can probably get AirPort Utility to "see" the Time Capsule if you connect your Mac to it with an Ethernet cable.  Then you can see why the Time Capsule isn't happy.  If the two devices are too far apart to make a cable feasible, then do a "factory default reset" of the Time Capsule and reconfigure it.

  • Time Machine backups failing (error 22) on Time Capsule

    Hi
I've been happily using my Time Capsule as a Time Machine backup for the last year or so. Two MacBooks have worked just fine on there, along with a network drive to store some of the wife's files which won't all fit on her Air.
Last night the firmware was updated on the TC and now whenever I try to do a backup on either my MacBook Pro or the MacBook Air I get the following error:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-2/Adrian’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 22).
The backups have always gone into a folder "Data" on the TM previously, and whenever a TM backup began I got a dark green TM disk icon on the desktop. Now this doesn't happen and the above error shows after the TM tries to prepare the disk.
I've tried deleting the .com.apple.timemachine.plist file from the Library Preferences to recreate that, no good. I've tried rebooting both TC and MBP. I've tried moving my old backup to a different folder to start afresh. Nothing has helped.
I also cannot access the old backups - I get this error:
An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584).
I have 1TB space remaining on my 2TB TC, so that shouldn't be an issue. I've tried rolling back the firmware using the Airport Utility as well, but this hasn't helped either.
I'm running OS X Lion 10.7.3 on moth MBP and MBA.
And with that I'm stumped as to why something that was so reliable should now suddenly stop working. The last backup was showing as yesterday at 21:22, which would have been just before I did the update. The only other thing I may have done last night was to map a network drive on the MBA so the wife can connect to her folder on the TC more easily.
Any ideas/solutions gratefully received! Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the backups may be damaged.  Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

  • Help! HP Laptop vista64bit+2 Apple TVs+TB Time Capsule - Best Way 2 Hookup?

what would be the best way to connect my devices?
    hp laptop with vista, 64bit
itunes library on external seagate TB drive
2 Apple TVs for 2 different rooms,
    1 TB Time Capsule,
Cable internet, Belkin N1 wireless router
i have a couple long ethernet cords & was gonna run one from router to bedroom where laptop is, and another to bedroom to either apple tv or to time capsule.
what would be the best way to configure these things,
and what would be better connected directly to router via ethernet
and what would be fine on wireless??
it's very confusing and i have had to load and reload and reload my library, and synch and resynch and resynch between library and apple tv... and how does the Time Capsule fit into all this?? ARGH i fear i purchased too much equipment. IDEALLY i would love to have one apple TV in the living room, and one apple TV in the bedroom where my laptop is...
i have had so much trouble with signal strength and libraries synching etc. are there any kind and wise folks out there with the heart to help me? MUCH THANKS IN ADVANCE

P.S. - should i use the Time Capsule INSTEAD of the Belkin router, connect my wireless printer to the time capsule, and then set up internet connection for my PCs and my Apple TVs? was just reading more info on the Time Capsule, i had it disconnected and put away for a while and forgot.

  • What does a greyed out folder mean? (after failed file copy from Time Capsule)

I did a clean install of Mavericks and I'm trying to copy my files back from my Time Capsule.
The transfer rate is terrible, despite being a direct link via gigabit ethernet.
I have about 800GB of Logic projects on the Time Capsule, so I set it off to copy them over.
After 2 days and 233GB copied across, my iMac hung and I had to do a hard reset.
I now have a 233GB folder on my desktop that is lighter in colour and I can't open it. Nothing happens.
Is there any way to resume the copy, or am I looking at starting again, leaving my iMac untouched for 5 days and hoping for the best?
The tech just doesn't work reliably, despite being a fresh install of Mavericks and an offical Apple Time Capsule 2TB. No idea what I'd do if I had 2 or 3GB of data...

    Phil,
If you haven't already you may want to try to restart the TC first to ensure that it doesn't think that that folder or it's contents are still in use in some way.
If that doesn't allow deletion, then you may need to use terminal to delete it regardless of permissions.  Be careful when doing the following and make sure that all spaces and typing are done exactly as given below:
    1) Log into the mac as an account that is an Administrator
    2) Open Terminal, then arrange Terminal and Finder so you can see them both
    3) Open a Finder where you can see the grayed-out folders on the TC
    4) In terminal, type the following, including a [space] at the end (but don't hit enter yet)
    sudo rm -r
    5) From Finder, drag the bad folder to the terminal window and release.  This will type the correct path into terminal.  Ignore and leave any backslashes that are added to the path.  You should end up with a command that looks like this:
    sudo rm -r /Volumes/MyTC/ParentFolder/BadFolder
    6) Hit enter ONLY if the path looks correct and ends in the name of the bad folder you are trying to kill.  If the path looks wrong or does not end in the targeted folder name, then do not hit enter and close terminal.
    7) Once you hit enter you will be prompted for the password of your currently logged in user.
    8) it should then blow away the folder.
    9) Close terminal

  • Help with configuring back to my mac on the time capsule?

I just found out about the "back to my mac" feature within the time capsule. I followed the directions on how to set it up, but I have a problem. it says that I am supposed to enable the nat port mapping protocol. I went to the internet tab in the TC and changed connection sharing to share a public ip address, and then enabled the Nat protocol but when I hit update, it says that I have to correct 3 problems:
    1. DHCP beginning address. The dhcp range entered conflicts with the WAN ip address of my device. It shows 192.168.1.2
    2. DHCP ending address. The dhcp range entered conflicts with the WAN ip address of my device. It shows 192.168.1.200
    3. The wireless device is setup to allow configuration over the ethernet wan port, which decreases network security. It gives me the option to unclick the allow setup over wan box, or I can simply choose to ignore this problem.
What does all this mean? and how can I fix these problems?

3 Broadband presents a whole host of problems when using on the go: broadband it ain't -it has serious issues with gMail and gTalk, loses connections with the latter plus AIM and iChat, sends eMails off into the ether and basically is just toy broadband. I had the chance to compare the service with the offering from O2 Ireland (shortly about to go to 7,2 mbps) and there is just no comparison. To all intents and purposes, O2(IRL) behaves just like real broadband, performs all normals tasks with aplomb and without even getting up steam. This is how HSDPA should be (and this is over bluetooth, not even using the usb datamodem).
I'm dropping 3 IRL as soon as possible and just keeping 3 UK X-series as backup.

  • Help! Can't find files I moved to Time Capsule

About a month ago, I moved several files from an external HD to my Time Capsule HD. The folder of files was apart from the regular Time Capsule update. When I entered Time Capsule today, the folder of files is no longer there. In fact, the Time Capsule seems to go back no farther than 2 weeks. What happened to the files? Can I recover them?
I have 2 TB of space on the Time Capsule HD, and still have 1.7 TB available, so space isn't an issue. Anyone have any idea how I can find my missing files? I had no idea that Time Capsule got rid of stuff after 2 weeks.

How did you move the files?
Did you move it to inside the sparsebundle? That would be bad.. very very bad.
If you moved it to the root directory.. the name might be data or Time Capsule.. or half a dozen other things .. check there.
The TC will not remove files at all.
TM could do anything from the sparsebundle as it is controlled not by the TC but by TM.

  • Macbook Pro + Virgin Mobile USB Modem + WiFi Time Capsule = No Internet :(

Helping a friend with this. Can connect to Internet OK w Virgin Mobile USB modem. When he then connects to Time Capsule via WiFi, the Internet stops working. Turn off WiFi and it starts working again.
I looked at the routing tables and both interfaces are set as default. I disabled default on the WiFi interface but had no effect. Here is the output of the netstat -rn command. If anyone has any insight it would be appreciated.
    Internet:

What's the ordering of the interfaces in System Preferences : Network? My first guess would be it's favouring the wifi by default so you will need to change the ordering.
