Help - virus on the MAC?

I recently upgraded to the MAC Lion OS. I've started receiving a message box when I leave my laptop idle. "Apple agent wants to make changes. Please enter password"  Of course, I do not enter the password. But then I will notice that if I open Safari, it would actually show iTunes.  I have been shutting off the computer when this happends and then turning it back on. Anyone else have any idea if this is a virus? What to do???

Hi Allan, no I have not.  If I did, I am not aware. Where can I go see what, if any, RSS Feeds are subscribed?
I just downloaded ClamXav and ran a scan. No viruses found. I am curious as to where the message box comes from though.  Thanks.

  • Anti-virus on the Mac

Anti-viruses on the Mac system seem to be a very controversial topic.  In my opinion, every computer should have protection but I'd like to know from other Apple IT Specialists like myself what is your opinion on this?  If you feel we should have protection on our Macs, what is the best program out there?  I've been using Symantec and haven't had any problems with it but I've seen on many threads that many others don't like to use it.

OS X has got its own security systems, as XProtect and Gatekeeper, that makes your Mac safer, so I think that you don't have to worry about antiviruses that can slow down your computer or damage OS X. See > http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg
Anyway, if you want an antivirus, you can install ClamXav or Sophos, but they are designed to detect Windows virus more than OS X ones (if there are any)

  • Is it possible to get a virus on the Mac OS X v10.6.4 Snow Leopard?

Hi, I was just wondering if it is possible to get viruses on the new system and I was also wondering if someone could give me some help/suggestions on what I should do about a problem I had with my iMac today. When I turned on my computer from sleep today a page popped up onto my iMac computer screen saying I had trojans and viruses on my computer. It also stated I needed to download software in order to fix the problem, luckily while I was in the middle of downloading this software I noticed that the page was not from apple but it was from the internet.. thankfully I cancelled the download just on time and none of the software downloaded... I am new to Mac and I'm now really paranoid that there is viruses on my computer.. should I be worried? What should I do? If anyone has any suggestions/advice/ or help to give to me on iMac computer's -viruses-protecting them etc..I would really appreciate it
    Thanks,
    kateos9

These 'warnings' are usually pop-unders from a web page you've visited (i.e. they stay behind the page you're viewing so you don't see them until later).
They claim to have scanned your computer and found viruses: this is complete rubbish and a scam - aimed really at Windows users (the details given are often applicable only to windows).
You don't have any viruses: there are no Mac viruses in the wild. There are trojans and malware, but in all cases you have to actually install them (usually they try to make you think you are installing something else) and you would have had to give your admin password to do so.
You were right to stop the download. Never ever download or click any links on anything of this nature. Unless you have specific anti-virus software installed (which would identify itself in any warning) no warning of this nature can be genuine: it's an attempt to get you to install malware, some of which can be very nasty.

  • Weird things happening to my Mac - Could really be a Virus on the Mac?

    Hallo everyone out there,
I'm making this post hoping I can get some information to solve my issue.
I did search on the forum and on the net for a possible solution but with no results.
I apologize in advance in case I miss some related/important post.
Please forgive my english since is my second language.
    *The MAC:*
    HD 1: OS 10.5.4
    2x3 Ghz Quad-Core
    4 Gb 667 DDR 2
    ATI RAdeon 1900XT
    Double Monitor System
    External Maxtor HD (firewire)
    HD 2: Win Xp SP2
    Firewall: Little Snitch
    Ethernet/Wireless Modem
    Backup: TimeMachine
    *The Issue:*
First boot of the day got an alert message from the firewall: "the settings have been changed"
Right Click: the usual menu doesn't stay on but it fades away just after less then 1 sec.
Top Bar: can't access the different menu on the top bar, the menu fades away just after less then 1 sec.
Utilities Folder: it's gone. is not in the APP folder anymore. Keyboard shortcut doesn't work
Dock: question marks instead of APP icons
System Pref: Can't access the system preferences
    What i did:
Delete some apps and delete some files from the desk
    Empty the bin
Shut down the Mac holding the power button
    Switch on the system again
AFter that the top bar menu was working fine, but still can't access the system preferences and even the MORE INFO button didn't work.
Right Click worked for 3 minutes only and then again the menu issue
Got some monitors flashing and filckering (never had a problem)
Can't insert my admin passoword tring to change some settings: the letters are fine but pushing numbers on the keyboard make the system beeping.
After that i Restore a 5 days old backup with time machine.
Back on the desktop but the problems are still there.
I did try to unplug everything and then plug one item at the time but with no success.
The windows system is running fine -.-'
    I download mp3 from Beatport.
I do use Azureus for movies.
Recently i opened some .ppt files (the source should be secure though)
    I'm not the onl
I would really aprreciate any kind of help you might want to give.
    Thx in advance for that.

Harden your router. Update the firmware and add some rules. Little Snitch should help. Run ClamXav and/or Intego demo VirusBarrier X5. Leopard Cache Cleaner includes ClamXav.
    http://www.northernsoftworks.com/leopardcachecleaner.html
    http://www.intego.com/
When you use Azureus you basically broadcast your IP to others.
By your restore, it doesn't sound like you keep emergency bootable backups, internal on another drive, and off line 'as needed' Firewire boot drive.
I doubt it is malware (people use "virus" to cover things that really are not a virus, like worms, trojan horses, and rootkits).
Boot from DVD or another drive and run Disk Warrior (after you run Disk Utility). Have you repaired your boot drive booted from another hard drive? tried deep cleaning cache folders? created a new test user account?
Setup an emergency system, not from backups, on a newly formatted drive. And pull your old drive first. Installing software from an original distribution disc to an empty hard drive, which is called a "clean install," is a best practice recommended by security organizations, such as NIST and US-CERT.

  • Yosemite downloaded and installed than Black screen.  all we have is a black screen. Traveling in Indonesia so no Apple store nearby. The screen does not respond to reboot in safe mode. Can anyone help to get the Mac Book Pro up and running again?

We are in indonesia travelling and after downloading and installing Yosemite, on our next restart the screen went black and responds to nothing. Tried to reboot (shift key) in safe mode after first crashing the system but nothing responds except for the opening chime. Toal disaster so any help will be greatly appreciated. Judging by the comments I have read, Yosemite seems to have many issues for us to look forward to, if and when we can bring back the Mac Book Pro to life.

See if you can boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down).  There you can reinstall the system.

  • Is the adobe flash virus affecting the mac operating systems?

Is the adobe flash update virus affecting mac operating systems?

The latest Flash 11 works fine for me on Mavericks, on every site that plays videos.
I have no idea what Xat Flash Chatrooms is (and really have no interest), but it sounds like the issue is with that site, as Flash in general works for literally tens of millions of people on most other sites.

  • HT201250 It's amazing how little help "Help" is in the Mac on using Time machine to do a full "restore" .. Oh sure.. It says you can do it .. but offers no way of doing it by explanation .. Then we have this article that suggests to re-start with the "Com

.. but what do ya do when the "Command-R" keys do nothing at restart .. sigh!

Thanks Matt, for you quick help on this .. Unfortunately, the link is no help at all.  Well.. It seems to offer help, and it sorta gets you started with some cautions .. but, actually provides no instruction on how to fully restore using Time Machine.  It quickly launches into "Migration Assistant" which is not Time Machine software.
My problem is with Time Machine .. and the instructions on how to use it for a full restore .. Those instructions simply don't exist, or are hidden, and left as an exercise for the student to find.
Ironicly, there was nothing wrong with my computer, until Apple issued a recall to replace the 1TB drive in iMacs. After 3 years of my iMac working perfectly ...I made the fatal choice to let Apple replace my drive, at the California,  Escondido, North County Apple store.   A work order was generated that would replace the drive, and a full restore would be done by the store, as I (like most everyone else) had no idea how to use Time machine for a full restore.
When I got the computer home (after 6 days in the store) .. I was shocked and horrified to find all data was gone.. it was essentially a new computer out of the box.  They didn't "restore" anything.
I had backed up everything just before taking the iMac in. Unfortunately, all of my attempts at using Time Machine failed to produce any meaningful results .. And now .. a worse problem has developed.. When launching Time Machine.. the drive ( which does mount on the screen) is no longer listed as a "Time Machine Backup Disk)  And apparently, cannot even be accessed by Time machine.
I called the Apple store .. They are sorry for the screw-up, and are saving my old drive, and will put it back in.. or use it, somehow, to restore my computer.  Naturally, I do not trust them to be successful.
.. then there's the problem with the backup drive .. apparently caused by Time Machine.... sigh!

  • What are the best Anti-virus anti spam programs for the Mac?

I think the title said it all....
    Cheers,
    Bass.

It is particularly difficult to programme a virus for
the Mac, considering that to move or change anything
in the system requires expressed authentication from
    the user.
That's true, except for users running as admin. Admin tasks and even some root tasks can be done from an admin account without any authentication.
Many people only have a single account on their Mac, and so they are running all the time as admin. These users are more vulnerable to attacks than users who save their admin account for real admin tasks and do everything else from a non-admin account.

  • Do I have a virus on my Mac

I have a ibook 1.33 ghz PowerPC one and this has Mac OSX 10.5.4
Since the last few days, I see that the icons on my dock are getting deleted automatically and so are the files in Mail.app. I seem to have lost a lot of emails and the itunes playlist is all gone.
On another login, the system automatically deletes files from the desktop and logs off. The only reason I can think of is that it is a virus. I tried running Intego's AV software but it was not able to pick up anything.
Has anyone encountered such a virus?
    Thanks for all the help
    Cheers
    Naren

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
There are no viruses for the Mac. Your scan shows this.
There is malware and other things that can be at issue.
Do you use any file-sharing software such as Limewire or other bit-torrent stuff?
I suggest first running the disk utility and repairing your HD and permissions.

  • Unable to install Leopard 10.5 on the Mac Pro.

    Dear Gentlemen,
In the past two weeks I tried to install windows on the Mac Pro with *Boot Camp* but unfortunate that the *Boot Camp* dose not support when the Raid Card is installed in the Mac Pro so I ask the support in my area and he said ((just remove the card and the *Boot Camp* will work O.K. but really what happened??
the Mac stopped working when I started it after I removed the Raid Card so I tried to install it again but unfortunate the installer of the Mac does not see the hard disk to install the system, take note that I placed the Raid Card again in the Mac Pro and even so no luck, so _can you help to install the Mac and make the RAID Card work probably with the_ *Boot Camp*.
    *My Mac pro Specifications are:*
    • Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
    • 4GB (4 x 1GB)
    • Mac Pro RAID Card
    • 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s

    • Apple Cinema HD Display (23" flat panel)
    • One 16x SuperDrive
    • Apple Mighty Mouse
    • Apple Keyboard (English) + Mac OS X
If can not make the Raid Card work with the *Boot Camp* can you help me to sell it or replace it with Hard Drives and Rams?

When you removed the RAID card did you reconnect the iPass cable (that was plugged into the connector on the back of the RAID card) to the connector on the motherboard (below hard drive 1, behind the fan assembly)? Without that cable connected, the four hard drives will not work. It is a bit of work to move that cable. See page 13 in the RAID card installation manual for the location of the motherboard connector:
    <http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacProRAIDCardInstallation.pdf>
When you reinstalled the RAID card, did you reconnect the iPass cable to the connector at the back of the card?
With the RAID card installed, you cannot use the four hard drives for Boot Camp, but you can install one or two SATA drives in the lower optical drive bay with MaxConnect
    <http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ id=158>
and connect them to the iPass connector on the motherboard with a SATA to iPass cable, such as
    <http://www.wiredzone.com/xq/asp/ic.10017434/qx/itemdesc.htm>
These two drives can then be used by Boot Camp or OSX.

  • Help with a new Mac user

    Hi,
New to MAC. Is there a way to do a restore to out of box set up? I also need to find a local group to go to to help learn about the Mac G4. Want to learn more about how to use the software. It is 9.2 os.

derftl, welcome to Apple Discussions & the Mac community.
You can download a PDF copy of your Mac's user manual at this link.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50018
I doubt that you will find an OS 9 manual in any computer store. You might find a copy by doing a Google web search, or possibly in a used book store. Also, suggest you join LEM-Swap for buying & selling Mac stuff. http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap
After you join, post a WTB (want to buy). Ask for a book on using OS 9.
     Cheers, Tom
Go to this site & see if there is a User Group near you.

  • Is there any value in using software to clean the Mac like MacKeeper.  Is there serious need for this?

I am concerned about malware and always had Macafee on my Dell.  When I go into Safari there is an initial delay saying that I am not connected to the internet and then the connection is made.  This is the cause of my concern.

No. What ever you don't download MacKeeper. It will cause you nothing but troubles.
As far as the best tool for malware on the Mac, it is your brain. Since there are no virus on the Mac, AV software only causes problems. So stay away from that. About the only exception is ClanXav. It has the best record of not causing problem. So if you need to test virus get ClamXav.
The only malware out there are Trojans which use phishing attacks to get you to give them your permission to install them. This includes MacKeeper. It will attempt to get you allow it it with all means possible. So be careful and you don't need any software that is going to make your life miserable.

  • How do you remove rival gaming virus from a mac

I need to know how to remove the rival gaming virus from my mac

There is no such virus for the Mac, unless it is literally brand-new.  See my Mac Malware Guide.
What is telling you that you have such a virus?  If you have anti-virus software that is telling you it has found that virus, it is Windows malware that happens to be attached to an e-mail message or something, and as such, it cannot affect your Mac in any way.
