Help w/ Acrobat refusing to save downloaded PDFs

After downloading a pdf from the web, i do a "save as" to put it on my hard disk, and the first time i do this i get the following error msg:
Adobe Acrobat 6.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.
AppName: acrobat.exe     AppVer: 6.0.0.878     ModName: acrobat.exe
ModVer: 6.0.0.878     Offset: 003aea45
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\f396_appcompat.txt
Detect and repair and even uninstalling and reinstalling have not worked. any ideas?
thanks

You might also check the security and use ctrl-D to check the version. Those features should not crash Acrobat 6, but you never know. The other thing you should do that is most likely the problem is to update AA6. There are several updates available (check Adobe.com>downloads>Updates>Acrobat Windows). Be sure to install them in order (they are not cummulative).

  • Acrobat 8 disables "Save to PDF" only for some PDFs?

    Hi there,
I have a tax for for this year that I downloaded from the Colorado Dept of Revenue. The form lets me "fill in the blanks" and prints, but won't let me "Save As" (like the Fed forms will).
So I thought I'd try to "Print" and select "Save as PDF", but somehow, Acrobat has disabled this function completely, and a dialog comes back and says "Use File -> Save As" in Acrobat. But that functionality is disabled.
How can Adobe disable a system function like Print to PDF???? That seems "bad" to me... Can anybody tell me how to save the form that I've filled in? I don't need to edit it again, but it would be nice to be able to do this.
I can print it, then rescan the printed copy to PDF again, but that seems like an extraordinarily stupid and manual workaround....
    Thanks in advance....
    Steve
PS: If anybody wants to try it, the link to the form I'm working with is
    http://www.revenue.state.co.us/PDF/06106fill.pdf

You need to moan at the original creator, who has
apparently given the file the wrong attributes due to
lack of forethought. Acrobat is only behaving as
    it's supposed to.
It's that Acrobat has apparently modified a system function (print to PDF) that I'm complaining about. I understand them disabling the "Save as PDF" function, but I totally disagree with them modifying my print driver's ability to perform a function that every other Macintosh application can perform.
I will be opening this as an issue with both Apple and Adobe. I don't believe they should be allowed to do this. They can make their own program do whatever they want, just don't modify the way the printer driver works.
I'll also open this issue with the State of Colorado to make their forms "saveable".
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • HELP PLEASE Acrobat Pro 8 for MAC PDF files printing all black pages (other file formats JPG and TIFF and XLS etc are fine)

Pages print blackout  or black washout fuzzy when using scanned image to PDF creation or "Save As" PDF from JPG or other.  All other documents print perfectly.  Just not PDF's.  Worked fine up until today.  If I open JPG, print to PDF and try to print that PDF file, page is all black.  Any ideas on how to resolve?  Thanks!!

  • Can't download the .pdf form. Error comes up of "Acrobat could not save this ,pdf file. The file might be open in another app and cannot be overwritten."

It was happening on the mac. Now it is happening on both a mac and pc.

I read some other threads after posting this. Seems if you download the Adobe Forms Central App to your computer, you combat the problem. It is running much smoother now and allows me to save .pdfs to my mac no problem. I thought it was a problem with Acrobat but it turns out is is an issue with using the online program versus the App. I highly recommend the app.
    Thanks for responding though.

  • Help Needed:  Acrobat Pro XI - Reduced Sized PDF vs. Optimized PDF

Hopefully some of you folks can help me, as I cannot get in touch with Adobe customer service.  I recently upgraded to Acrobat Pro XI.  In my old version of Acrobat Pro, I used to be able to take a PDF file of large size (let's say 10 MB) and shrink it down considerably with relative ease (down to less than 1 MB).  The file could then be easily emailed, shared, read, and most importantly wouldn't take up tons of hard drive space.  With this new version of Acrobat Pro XI, that same 10 MB file barely reduces down to 7 or 8 MB.  I have played with the various settings in both the File -> Save As Other -> Reduced Sized PDF and File -> Save As Other -> Optimized PDF.  Regardless of what I try, I cannot achieve anywhere near the same compression results as what I used to be able to achieve with my old version of Pro.  I can get the file size reduced, but the reduced file quality is trash.
Has anyone else encountered this problem as well?  Do any of you have any suggestions on what to do to fix??  I primarily scan a document as a PDF file with my HP OfficeJet Pro, and then reduce the PDF file size after the scan.  I could scan the document with lower DPI to begin with (currently scan 300 dpi typically grayscale), but then I don't have the scanned image quality that I need to reduce the file down so that it can be reprinted later at a good enough quality.

I had previously ran the audit, and 99% + of my bloat is in the image.  All of the other possibilities for bloat do not even add up to 1%.  For my purposes as a Financial Advisor, I print out blank applications & account forms, fill out the paperwork by hand, and then scan copies of the completed paperwork back into my computer for electronic filing.  Some of these completed client documents can be 50 to 75 pages long ... so the PDF scanned at 300 dpi obviously starts out as a substantially sized document that can take up 25, 35, or 45 MB per scan.  The crazy thing is that the old version of Acrobat Pro (I believe it was version 7 or 8) would take a 45 MB file and compress it down almost to 1/10th of the oiginal size.  As a result, a 45 MB file would end up as a 4.5 MB file.  This significant reduction was always accomplished using the one button selection "Reduce PDF" command ... had nothing to do with optimizing the PDF with the old version.  Once I ended up with the 4.5 MB file, I could open that file at a later date and print out a page that I needed and you couldn't hardly tell if it was the original or a scanned copy.  There was no loss of quality whatsoever!!  The Reduce PDF size in Acrobat XI just doesn't work well ... will take that 45 MB file and reduce it down to 42 MB which defeats the whole purpose of the Reduce PDF command in the first place.  If I play around with the inputs in the Optimze PDF, I can shrink the file size lower but lose way too much image quality.  The only variable that has changed from my old scanning results vs. my new scanning results is the upgrade from Acrobat Pro 7 to Acrobat Pro XI ... everything else that I'm doing is the exact same.  Same thing applies when I create a PDF portfolio from multiple PDF documents ... a 150 MB PDF Portfolio will barely reduce in file size.

  • How can users who have Acrobat Reader only save scanned pdf files so that the text on them is searchable using ctrl-F?  I just use the recognize text with ocr feature in the full version of Acrobat and this seem to do the trick. Reader doesn't work!

Our users have scanned pdf files they want to be able to search using ctrl-f.  I got them to be searchable by doing a recognize text using ocr with Acrobat Professional vesion 8.  They want to know if they can make the files searchable with Acrobat Reader only or if they need the full Acrobat Professional software to make the files searchable.
    Thanks for the help!!
    Ken K. - 2191

To clarify a bit they need to have Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Reader. Reader has not been associated with the Acrobat name for 3 or more versions. The process you are asking about is a creation process - the purpose of Acrobat - and NOT a reading feature.

  • How to save/download pdf files from safari?

I have some PDF files that I need to download from the internet/Safari. How do I do that? There is a button that I can click on my PC using Firefox but I can't find anything in Safari of my iMac. I would appreciate very much if someone can help me. Thanks.

Thank you, Niel. Do I move the cursor outside the window or still within the window? I tried many times and couldn't find the right spot.
Barry, you are right. I was going to do that but I want to learn how to use it with Safari.

  • I use program PDF Converter Professional. When downloading from the net I want to use Adobe Acrobat Reader to open downloaded pdf forms. Adobe Acrobat is my default program but Firefox keeps using PDF Converter. How do I change this?

Acrobat Reader is the default program for all variants of pdf files, both in Windows 7 and in Firefox.

So you have a trial version of Acrobat (that is not activated) installed?  If so, uninstall it.
Do you also have Adobe Reader installed?  If so, you need to open it once and accept the EULA.

The message would suggest that the trial had been installed before. It will just be a marker indicating a prior installation. You may just have to reinstall AA8.

  • Any Way to Save a pdf User Manual?

I seem to recall that in previous versions of FCS apps, including Motion, you had the Help option to open (usually in Preview) a pdf User Manual. From there, via the Print dialog, you could do a "Save as PDF", into the folder of your choice.
I often like to have a searchable User Manual which I can access without having to launch the app itself. So I created a special folder into which I would save separate pdf copies of user manuals which had been incorporated into the apps themselves. But in Motion 4, all I'm seeing is an HTML Help Document, and trying to "Save as PDF" via the Print window only seems to let me save the one currently visible page, nothing more.
So -- is there still any way to create a separate, searchable User Manual for Motion (and for the other FCS3 apps), or have even pdf help documents gone the way of those two-ton paper manuals of yesteryear?
    Thanks,
    John Bertram

Yeah, the PDF functionality is lost within the FCS3 apps themselves. The Pro Apps team wanted to be able to continually update the Help files, so they were made (exclusively) web-based.
That resulted in a bit of an outcry. Thankfully, the team listened, we have to now visit the Help pages for each app (here's the one for Motion) and open/download from the View as PDF link.

  • How to save downloaded files from safari for offline use?

Need help how to save downloaded PDF or images from Safari for offline use. On Mac or PC, we "save as" the files. How do you do it on safari on iPhone?

You can't detach email attachments as separate files, though you can view supported formats as attachments. If you're viewing webmail with Safari, the attachments aren't saved on the iPhone.
Apple hasn't made any announcements about new feature for the iPhone and rarely does. The other iPhone users in this user-to-user forum have no access to unannounced Apple plans, and speculation about them is prohibited by the forum Terms of Use.
If you want to make a suggestion to Apple, post it on the iPhone Feedback page:

    Hello,
I would like for security reason, the option in Acrobat Pro X "Save as PDF" be greyed out.

Is it possible to do this please?

  • Preventing Preview from saving downloaded PDFs

I love Preview in many ways, but one way I miss Adobe (or is it Windows...?) is that the PDFs were saved as temp files and deleted when closed. This meant if I wanted a copy, I manually saved it. With Preview, my desktop can quickly fill up with unwanted copies. it gets worse when I revisit a PDF and get multiple copies of the same (seems like Preview would be smart enough to know it had already been there). How can I either prevent or change the location to which Preview saves downloaded PDFs?
Also, I'm using Firefox and it just occurred to me this could be Mozilla "functionality". Is it?

*The lack of a Google toolbar for Safari really has me down on it*
Hmmm! There's one on mine. You must have deleted it. Check View->Customize Toolbar and drag it back or just use the defaults setting.
How? I've yet to see options for either of these.
*First off, if you want PDF's to open in your browser, set it up that way.*
You need to install PDF Browser Plugin.plugin. Sorry, I've had it for over three years, so I forget it doesn't come with Safari. Get it at http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/
*If you don't want PDFs downloaded to your Desktop, change the download location.*
    Safari->Preferences->General->Save downloaded files to: whereever

A "quick" fix that worked for me was to uninstall Adobe... then download the base install for Adobe Reader 11.0.
Then download each of the individual updates and run them sequentially.
I've installed back up to the last security update which is version 08 and have been able to do normal Save As operations.
You will have to disable automatic updates in order to stay at version 08 until Adobe resolves this issue in a later release.

  • No longer able to download pdfs, tried all the stuff on the help page, is this a result of the new version of Adobe Acrobat 10.1.3?

Previously, I had no difficulty w/ downloading pdfs. Now all I get is a blank Firefox screen, with nothing else happening--no downloads window opening up like before, or anything else. I recently upgraded my Adobe Acrobat to 10.1.3, and I wonder whether this is related to that? Does FireFox not find the new Acrobat?
I've gone through the things on the Firefox help page like changing download folder and renaming the whatever folder it was from what: rdp? to rdp.old. Does not effect problem.

Thanks Matt. I finally seem to have got it working better now with having gone into the Preferences, Applications, and selected "USE Adobe Acrobat Pro (default)" It had somehow gotten switched to "USE Adobe Acrobat NPAPI plugin..."
I admit to not knowing what I'm doing, but this switch seems to have made it workable again.
    Hope this maybe helps others...
