  • Renaming files in BorderFX for iPhoto

    Hi,
I've been watermarking my photos using the BorderFX extension for iPhoto.  However I cannot figure out how to change the title when I export the photo through BorderFX.  I've been creating new folders with the title but would like to be able to rename the actual file.
Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, how?
    Thank you,

Are you running Snow Leopard or Lion?  Your info says Snow Leopard.  If it's lion then:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
Then you can locate the folders mentioned.

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

    Thanks OT,
I tried the Export function but it would not allow me to choose the option of exporting to iMovie. I think you are right about needing Quicktime Pro. I opened iMovie and imported the clip from iPhoto and with some searching found the 'cropping, rotation' mechanism. So I now have a copy in the correct orientation. I plan to import/export it back to iPhoto because I want to have a copy on my iPhone to show people and I wanted to have it available as part of a slideshow I am making in iPhoto of my recent overseas trip. It is a pain that there is no simple orientating tool for the movie clips downloaded to iPhoto with the photos from the one camera.

Sorry but we need details to help
What version of the OS do you have? What has changed since iPhtoo worked?
What exactly is the problem - you say "it was not responding" - You downloaded a new version (what version)" -you can't find yoru photos" none of which is helpful
look in your applications folder - is there an Iphoto application there? If so get info and report the version
Look in the picures folder - is there an iPhoto library there? If so exactly (including exact error messages) happens if you double click on it?
what else can you tell us that might help us assist you?

  • Help needed for iPhoto 8

I have inadvertently moved all my photo events (and their various labels) into one folder. This move erased all the event names so I have one massive unnamed folder/event. How can I undo this without having to go through all 10000 pictures and reorganize them? (I closed iPhoto before realizing what I had done, so I can't just "undo"). I did back up to Time Capsule this am and started to import them from there but I don't know that TC keeps them in event order and it seemed painfully slow. Ideas? thanks
    Dave Stroh

    Dave:
Do you have a recent backup of the entire library or of the library's database file, Library6.iPhoto, or the AlbumData.xml file? Having either is the only way I know of to get your events back without having to do it manually.
Otherwise, since Events are time based, you could create Smart albums based on years. Select all of the photos is one year smart album and create an event. Then do the same for each month in a year and make events for them. That way you'd at least have events based on months. That's the best I can think of.
See the tip at the end of my signature for a way to quickly and easily recover from a similar problem or other library damage issues in the future.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto '08 library to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.

I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto (2007) library on a Macbook to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.  First, when I opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked me to create a library, which I did.  Then I imported her photos via a wireless network to my "new" library.  However, when it finally finished importing, it had imported 3 copies of each photo from her library.  I deleted the "new" library and started over.
Second, I opened iPhoto on the iMac and chose to use "other library."  I chose my wife's shared iPhoto library and it began transferring the photos to the new iMac (or so I thought).  This worked beautifully as it only brought over single photos and not 3 copies like discussed above.  After editing the new library and adding some photos from an old PC, I shut down iPhoto.  A few hours later I tried to open iPhoto on the iMac and it gave me the opening screen again with choices to create a new library or use a different library.  As it turns out, my wife's Macbook and been disconneted from our wireless network.  I was able to figure out that that unless my wife's Macbook is connected to the network then I cannot access the iPhoto library on my iMac.  I was under the impression that I had copied her library to my computer and that the photo files were now on the hard drive of the iMac.  So when her computer is offline I can no longer access the imported library.  I want her library to stay on the iMac as we plan to sell her Macbook.  As you now know, we cannot access her iPhoto library on the Macbook since she is running an older version of iPhoto.
So, what I would like to do is to completely transfer the photos from her Macbook to my new iMac and be able to access them on the iMac regardless of whether she is on the network or not because we plan to sell her Macbook to a friend.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • A FIX for iPhoto 11 opening older libraries

Had the same problem everyone else has had. Then I was thunk in the forehead by an obvious trick. I use iPhoto Library manager. I opened IPLM and and clicked on the icon for creating a NEW LIBRARY (upper left corner of IPLM screen). I named it TestLibrary. I then launched this new file from within IPLM -- and iPhoto 11 (v 9.1) opened! That is, the app opened with a new library that contained no pictures. I dragged a couple of test jpg's into the library. Then I quit and reopened TestLibrary several times, to make sure I wasn't counting my chickens too soon. TestLibrary opened fine each time. I then quit IPLM and went directly to my picture libraries in the Pictures folder and launched them from the finder. EACH AND EVERYONE OPENED! They not only opened but iPhoto 11 performed the "update" function very quickly, even on the larger libraries. Again, I quit and reopened the files several times to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
I suspect the IPLM manager may be partially culpable. I note that many people who posted this problem also use IPLM.
FYI: I figured out this fix while standing here at a counter in my local Apple Store (Leawood, KS). The floor sales rep who tried to help me earlier -- a cute and very friendly blonde with a killer smile -- had no idea about the iPhoto problem. But she was very kind and took my emil address and set me up for a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow. I'm looking all over the store now for her. nowto share my success -- but she has wandered off. Rats. She really is cute; I'm single. Which is none of your business. Where was I? Oh yeah. Before Ms. Cute saleswoman wandered off and aftyr my heart rate returned to normal, I decided to experiment a little more. That's when I came up with the idea of using IPLM to create a blank new file. Getting ready to leave now. ..... NEW UPDATE: I finally spotted the very nice (and very cute) Apple saleswoman who had been helping me. Some other customer was flirting with her, pretending that he didn't know a thing about his new laptop. Rightttttt... I interrupted and asked her for a dance. Just kidding. I told her I had fixed my iPhoto libraries. She smiled, nodded, said "GREAT!" I melted. I offered to hang around a few minutes in case she wanted to come over and see how I fixed iPhoto. While waiting for her I thought I should type this and post it on the Forum. The very nice (and BEYOND cute) saleswoman still hasn't stopped by yet. I will wait a few more minutes. I'm in love. But the store is very busy. I will wait a few more minutes. I am realllly in love. Did I mention she was cute and very polite? Gotta go now. Perhaps Ms. Cuteness and I will meet in another time, place or dimension. After all, she has my name an email address. Maybe she'll send an email later and ask me for a date — strictly for professional and technical information purposes, of course; to find out how I fixed the iPhoto problem so that she can share it with other staff and customers. She probably won't, which means other Mac owners who wander in today with the same iPhoto problem will also fall in love with Ms. Cute but they won't learn a darn thing about my iPhoto fix. That kind of customer relations conduct would normally make me very angry. But nothing is normal anymore. It's hard to be angry when you're madly in love. -- David

    iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Update 10/24: I released a quick 3.5.8 update yesterday, which doesn’t yet provide full iPhoto ‘11 compatibility, but does provide a couple improvements for iPhoto ‘11 users, including a fix for those experiencing the issue of being unable to reopen a library after upgrading it to the new iPhoto version. If you have such a library, simply open the library up via iPLM, and you should be prompted by iPhoto to upgrade the library again. Once it’s complete, you should then be able to close and reopen the library normally.

  • Fix for iPhoto lost thumbnails on an external drive

I've had a few times when iPhoto seems to have lost all my thumbnails and pictures. I finally figured out what caused it and how to solve it. I thought others might be interested.
The problem occurs because of 2 things:
    1. I store my iPhoto Library on an external drive.
    2. While running iPhoto, the external drive becomes disconnected by mistake (usually because I kick the power cord)
I found that the problem is that iPhoto still tries to write the library files to the same location as it used to be. In order to fix the problem, you just need to remove the files that were created accidently. Here are the steps I used for iPhoto '06 and Max OS X 10.3.9 on an eMac. I'm guessing they'll work with other versions, but have not tested them.
    0. Quit iPhoto. Make sure you have a current back-up of all your files (don't you always
    1. Write down the name of the drive where you store your iPhoto library on the external drive:
I'll use <drive> in the remainder of this description. Replace that text with the name you just wrote down.
    2. Open the "Terminal" inside "Applications/Utilities/"
    3. Type "cd /Volumes". This is where Mac connects external drives to your UNIX filesystem. "cd" means "change directory" to the "/Volumes" drive.
    4. Type "ls". You should see the name of your drive there. "ls" means "list" the contents.
    5. Eject the <drive> from you Mac via the Trash Can and turn it off as normal.
    6. Type "ls". Normally your drive should disappear from this listing. However, you'll notice that the drive still appears there. The problem is that there are really 2 directories there, one gets over-written when you attach an external drive. But having 2 causes lots of problems.
    7. With the drive off, you want to move the 2nd directory out of the way. To do this, you will need to become a root user for a moment. This is done with the "sudo" which means "switch user and do something then switch back". The first time you use it in a terminal you will be required to type the administrator password. It's a very powerful command, but keeps you from getting into the wrong mode forever.
    8. Type "sudo mv '<drive>' '<drive>.wrong'". This switches users, "moves" the bad directory to another directory name (ie. rename for UNIX). Make sure to use the single quote (') in case the name of your drive has spaces in it.
This doesn't remove the bad files, just moves them out of the way. That way if this doesn't work, you can just move it back with the reverse command "sudo mv '<drive>.wrong' '<drive>'".
    9. Now turn your drive back on.
    10. Type "ls". Your <drive> should now re-appear in this listing.
    11. Restart iPhoto. It may ask you to locate the Library again.
Please note that these instructions are only provided to help other users running into the same problem. Also, I am not responsible for any lost data by following these instructions.
Also, if anyone finds this doesn't work, or has way to improve these steps, please feel free to post a reply.

It would be much easier if you make frequent backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and when you have a disconnect like you did, just replace the damaged file with the backup version. It is important to have a "recent" backup so you can get back where you were. So I've created an Automator application that will copy the file to the Pictures folder, label it orange, any time you click on it. So you can backup after any import, or work on a book, slideshow, etc. You don't need to close iPhoto to do it. Just don't be writing the the database file. You can download the application at Toad's Cellar.
    Do you Twango?

  • How do I remove the Facebook Exporter for iPhoto?

    Hello,
I have recently installed v1.0.8 of Facebook Exporter for iPhoto, and it hangs on the first picture I attempt to upload. It is unusable. I had found the previous version 1.0.6 which worked great and downloaded that, and subsequently attempted to install it. However, the installer errors out stating that there is already a previous version installed. The v1.0.6 and v1.0.8 installers, do not have an uninstall feature either. Direct support for this package is impossible from the developer.
I'm asking if anyone could lay out exactly what I need to remove in order that I can proceed with downgrading to the v1.0.6 once again. I have asked in other forums(not here) and have had only "upgrade all your software to the latest versions and everything should work" answers, which were and are completely useless. If an upgrade is required of something, please be specific as to why.
Note that, I have already performed this function as outlined here, http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=222897111055523, which simply describes deleting a folder in their install directory. This has not worked, meaning the removal has worked, however reinstalling the previous version envokes the error about a later version.
    Versions involved;
MacBook Pro, 2.53ghz, core 2 duo
    MacOS v10.6.8
    iPhoto '09, v8.1..2 (424)
