Help w/compressing movie

i put to together a movie from a dvd and audio from a cd, its about 2 hours long and the file size is a whopping 20 GB. i'm going to compress it to quicktime, but im wondering if that will screw with the audio, and also how big the file may be. thank you, if you need any more info i'll be glad to give it.

iMovie works within the DV specification. This simply means that 2 hours of DV material should equal 26GB. The video should be in a DV stream and the audio sampled at 16-bit/48KHz. You have several export options out of iMovie. If you choose DV stream, then nothing is changed and you have a 26GB file. Choosing other compression options will affect both audio & video. How it is affected depends on how it is compressed (which option you choose)!

I have a few wedding projects(1-2 hours)I am trying to export at full hd quality, than burn in idvd. After rendering for 8hrs I receive error code that states "file is too big". Please help? compressing tips without losing quality? or any other exporting alternatives?

    Hey Z,
Thank you for the tip on exporting by media browser (large) from imovie. But of course, if it's not one thing it's another. Now that I figured how to export a large file from imovie, I have an idvd issue. I followed the instructions for burning from idvd and changing the encoding to professional quality and the burn speed to x4, but I am receiving an error that states the following,
Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn your DVD, change the encoder setting in the Project Info window.
    Project:
    - total project duration: 79:04 minutes
    - total project capacity: 4.327 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)
    Menus:
    - number of menus in project: 1 menus
    - total menu duration: 0:39 minutes
    - total menu capacity: 37.370 MB
    Movies:
    - total movies duration: 78:25 minutes
    - total movies capacity: 4.291 GB
I have searched in the idvd forum for similar issues and I am stumped at this point. I have tried deleting the encoding assets and re launching idvd with the changed preferences, and still the same error. I know you mentioned something about free hard drive space available, and I have very little left. 4GB to be exact due to massive hours of non-edited footage. I am not sure if this is why, but I do not recall ever needing free space to burn memory onto a separate dvd. I would be more than happy if I am wrong, and it would be a quick fix. Otherwise, the technical nightmare continues. It's all a learning process and your expertise is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  • Need help converting quicktime movies into Flash files

I need to convert a QT, PhotoJPEG compressed, movie file into a .flv format. I have AE 6.5 Standard and it keeps quitting on exporting a SWV file which would could probably get me by with my client. But, again, it errors out saying something like a JPG is busy, or a file is busy.
I have FlipforMac,a purchased version. But I'm not sure if converting it into a .wmv and then a Flash file is the best route or is even possible.
Any suggestions or ideas of software that I could purchase??
    ~reicko

i don't think you have read up on the use of flash video
(FLV). there's nothing you need that you do
not already have (except maybe quicktime pro or some other
video editing program). the FLV exporter
comes FREE with flash 8. You should be able to open your
quicktime movie in QT PRO and export to FLV
format - then use any of the flash playback components for
FLV files - best bet is to read the help
docs on this subject and go to the devnet section of
adobe.com where there are several in-depth
articles about implementing flash video into your site.

  • Compress movie for CD-ROM

I've been working on a video conversion project using the ADVC300 to import old VHS clips into iMovie 6.
For the past two weeks I've read and experimented every which way to get a good quality representation of my video on the computer. The only good looking file that didn't give me black horizontal lines everywhere (MPEG-4 and H.264 tests) was the full quality setting. After much frustration with this I set it on the "Compress movie for CD-ROM" setting as a last resort, only to find this was exactly what I wanted. From my comparisons these files look as good as the .dv files at a MUCH smaller size.
So, just out of curiosity, is there any way of finding out exactly what these CD-ROM settings are? How exactly is this stuff getting compressed?
    Thanks for your input.

Great. I'll use those settings and experiment a little.
Now, if I could only find some way of speeding up the process. I know, buy a new computer. One 12 minute clip took about 50 minutes to finalize last evening. This will be a long process, with about 2 boxes of VHS tapes to convert, but at least there's other things to be done in the house while the computer is churning away.
    Thanks!

  • HT5622 I need help finding a movie that I downloaded, can anyone help me with this?

Hello, I need help finding a movie that I downloaded, can anyone help me with this?

If you downloaded it to your iTunes library it will be in the Movies folder.  If you downloaded it to an iOS device you will find it in the Videos app.  This explains how to redownload previously purchased videos (available in some locations as long as the studio permits it): http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12283.

  • Help syncing iTunes Movie Rental to iPhone

    Hi,
I just rented a movie from the iTunes store and it plays in itunes but I can't transfer it to my iphone. I clicked on my iphone while in itunes and changed the settings to sync all movies to my iphone but nothing happens. It doesn't even show up under videos. Has anyone else had any trouble transfering rentals to their iphone. Any help would be greatly appricated.
    Thank You

    Is your iTunes version 7.6?
When I select the iPhone Video Tab, it shows 3 sections, Rented Movies, then TV Shows, then Movies. It also states in the Rented Movies section that "You must be connected to the internet to transfer rented movie."
From iTunes help: "After the movie downloads to your computer, to transfer the rental to an iPod, iPhone, or Apple TV, connect the device, select it in iTunes, click the Movies tab, select the movie, and then click Move.
After you transfer a rental, it is removed from your iTunes library."

  • Compressing .mov and keeping alpha without changing to .flv

    Hello,
I am trying to run a .mov file with alpha through Adobe Media Encoder to get a compressed .mov file with alpha.
I found that I could change the file type to .flv with On2 VP6 codec, but I cannot use that because my file type must be .mov.  I am bringing the compressed .mov into Unity as a movie texture and Unity will only accept .mov .mpg .mpeg .mp4 .avi .asf.
Is there a way that I can run a .mov with alpha through AME and get a compressed .mov with alpha?
    Thank you
    Jon

The reason that you're getting a large file out of After Effects is that you're using the defult Lossless output module template, which uses the Animation codec. There is no reason to go through AME to make a smaller QuickTime movie. Just export directly from After Effects and choose a different codec in the output module settings. If you're using QuickTime, PNG is a good choice for getting smaller files that still have alpha channels.
However, why do you even care about file size if you also want an alpha channel? The reason to care about file size is for final ditribution; the reason to care about alpha channels is for using the file in a post-production process. Worrying about both at the same time means that you're likely confusing the requirements of two very different parts of the pipeline.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • Need urgent help with exporting movie

I have a simple 7-minute project on FCP 7 that consists of still images from the internet and hand drawn images with a few animated elements.
It has only one audio track and two video tracks. I am using PAL DV size format. I am in the UK.
I exported it using quicktime conversion with H264 compression and good quality and the final file size was 125MB.
My urgent problem is that I need to upload this file to a university website for an online course in two days, and their file size limit is 50 MB.
I need to make sure that the teacher can play the file, and I need to get it down to a smaller file size for uploading.
I have tried all sorts of exporting from FCP. I tried avi, m4v (the setting said ipod and it produced the m4v file), and quicktime mov at different sizes like 1/4vga size. The best file size was 29 mb for the m4v ipod export, and 98mb for the qt mov file exported at medium quality. The avi file grew to 1.2gb!
I don't know if the m4v file is playable on the system that the teacher uses (she is on a windows computer).
Can anyone please give me some specific advice on how to create a smaller video file that is more universally compatible?
I have access to all of the FCP 7 suite and the Adobe CS6 suite which includes Premiere Pro, Prelude and Adobe Media encoder, if that helps.
Thanks a lot for any advice.

    Hi Luis
The advice you've been given is good for helping you to get a good quality video at a reasonable file size.
But it may be worth thinking more about which format will certainly play on your teacher's PC.  The most likely player on any PC is Windows Media Player, which tens to be installed by default.
The most likely video to be viewed on a PC is one from YouTube...  andH.264 is supported on all "modern" PCs.  QuickTime Player is free and very available.
A disadvantage for Mac users is that yoou'll ned the Flip4Mac plugin to create WMV movies.  I think the cheapest paid version of Flip4Mac costs around £30.
All you need on a Mac fis the free Flip4Mac player.
If you get that, and choose the web high I quality setting, you should have a file within 50MB that plays reliably and looks OK.  (A cheaper way of doing this, if you have access to a PC, is to use the free Windows Media Encoder).
    Best of luck

  • Need help with compression rates with Sorenson Squeeze 6, Compressor3.5.2

Hopefully somebody can help me with this...
I am running Sorenson Squeeze 6 on a Mac to try and compress some Apple ProRes 422 videos into an MPEG-2 file. The file will be played in a DirectX application, running on a PC with Windows 7. When being played it looks to be heavily compressed, and I need help with some of the compression settings.
Let me get more into detail...
So I have received a Quicktime .mov that has been encoded with FCP using Apple ProRes 422 compression at 720x486 , 29.97 fps, 40.29 Mbit/s , and the file size is 515.7mb.
So, this is the type of file I will have to compress into an MPEG-2, that will be playing on a...
1.6 GHz Intel Atom 330 Dual Core
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Graphics
    1Gb DDR2 800 Ram
    32Gb SATA Solid State Drive
    Windows 7 Home
Here is what I have done so far on my Mac using Sorenson Squeeze 6 :
I have brought the original file in and created some presets.
First off, I am encoding these MPEG-2 videos using an elementary stream type so I can mux the files using MPEG Streamclip...
Here is a screenshot of the settings I am using in Sorenson :
    - I have changed many of the data rate settings as low as 3000 Kbps, and as high as 15,000 Kbps, and the end result looks essentially the same
    - The audio isn't a problem, so I'm not going to address that.
    - I have used the crop/deinterlace filter and also not used the filter, and it makes a big difference, so obviously it needs to be deinterlaced.
From there I will get the .m2v file and the .m2a file, and then mux those with MPEG Streamclip.
So, I have done 8 different Pre-sets all with various settings playing primarily with the data rate, and the method from 2-pass vbr all the way to 1-pass cbr.
So again, my end result that is playing back on the windows 7 box (the specs that are listed above) looks to be heavily compressed and pixelation occurs.
    - I have also done the exact same with Apple's Compressor, and have gotten better results muxing while compressing, however the end result still tends to be the same, however the end result is much better. I have gone through 8 or so different compression export settings, and just overall still have the same issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Help with importing .mov file from iphoto

I have a casio exilim ex-z1080 digital camera. I have imported the jpg and mov files into iphoto, but can't seem to get it to import into imovie. i read a similar post to mine but could not understand. can anyone help in lay person's terms?
how do i get imovie to recognize the file?

What do you think is the best program to do this? is it QuickTime?
You can use MPEG Streamclip (free), GarageBand (part of iLife), or QT Pro ($30). Each will allow you to convert to any of the iMovie '08 compatible compression formats. (Just avoid Apple Animation and Apple Video which import and edit but do not export properly.) For simplicity, I would normally use use MPEG and convert to DV. This work flow produces a file that can be handled by almost any video editor and, since the format is very standardized, leaves few settings for the use to enter. All you really ned do is select the "Export to DV" File menu option, select any of the compression pop-ups (default DV25 is okay), enter your standard (NTSC or PAL), and set your aspect ratio (either 4:3 or 16:9). It is also a good habit to resample the audio to 48 Khz for consistency. Other that that, you can generally ignore the other settings. (You can also make adjustments to volume, brightness, contrast, and saturation as part of the conversion, but this isn't necessary if you are going to edit in iMovie '08 anyway.) The nice thing about this application is that it sets the anamorphic flag as part of your conversion which iMovie '08 uses in conjunction with the project properties to properly preview (or pad for preview when aspect of project does not match aspect of source file) and to set proper export dimensions (padded or otherwise) for the project aspect ratio output.

  • Compressing .mov files out of Final Cut

I'm trying to export some Final Cut projects into .mov files but I need them to be compressed to 10mb or less. How do I do that in compressor? Or is there another software application that can take existing .mov files and shrink them down? Any help is appreciated.

Take the exported quicktime files. I use reference files, and drop it into compressor (open compressor and import it or just drop the file into the list area there). In the dropdown settings you should be able to select a web version that suits you and export it.
There is also info in the inspector that tells you an approximate size of the exported file. That should help determine if the codec you chose is going to work or not.

  • Help with compress function--file sizes not substantially reduced

I've tried to use the compress function (right click "compress" or Finder/File/Compress) a few times on files from a variety of different programs. While this results in creating a zip file, the file size is not substantially reduced (e.g., from 43.4 MB to 42.9 MB). Is there a way to change how much a file is compressed?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Eric

Not all material is very compressible. Text files and word processor documents usually compress very well. Photos and movies don't compress much if at all due to the nature of their structure (in some cases, using a general-purpose compressor can actually make a file larger). So it will depend on what it is you're compressing.

  • Possible to have clickable link in a compressed movie

    Hello forum readers,
I have several QT movies that I'm compressing in Compressor 1.2.1.
These movies will be offered free on the internet , and I would like to have my logo branding (bottom right corner) so when clicked - it would take them to the website in a browser.
    Is this possible?
Thanks for any help you may offer,
    Luke Wonderly

    Greetings, 9mluke.
While I've never done this, it is possible to have clickable urls in a Quicktime file. MacBreak Weekly does this. In fact, they have a video podcast which takes you step by step through the process. It requires a 3rd party program called LiveStage Pro to actually embed clickable links. All of that is described in their podcast which can be found via iTunes here:
