Help w/ re-installing OS after HD reformatt/restore

I have a 12" G4 powerbook. I had bought it from a friend and was trying to reformat and restore the HD the other night. I walked away from it to let it do it's thing and came back to the gray screen (like when you boot it up after a restart) where it has the loading circle icon at the bottom. However, it never goes on from there. It just stalls out there and the circle keeps going around and around and around. No HD sounds or CD-drive sounds. I've tried re-booting with the 1st and 2nd install CD. and also re-booting without any CD's. Same thing happens. Any help?

Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one. See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
Select Erase tab
Optional: (Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
Click OK.
Click Erase button
Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update (Panther) or
10.4.10 Combo update (Tiger)
Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.

  • Help, can't install Adobe After Effects CS5 (trial)

I tried to install the trial version of Adobe After Effects CS5 trial version and it doesn't work, when I opened the setup application it was all working fine until the installation, it went for a little bit then stopped and came up with an error message. I'm not sure what's going on, some people on other forums say you need to turn off antivirus and run as administrator but it still doesn't work.
    Details of my computer:
    RAM: 2GB
Disk Space: 230GB HDD (approx.) 147GB remaining
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64bit

    Any help please?
If you want to see the error message just ask

Well anyway here's the error message (it's rather long):

  • Re-install iLife after MacBook factory restore ?

Hey guys ..... after a little help please.
I have just reset my MacBook to factory settings by wiping the HD and re-installing Snow Leopard. The OS has reinstalled fine and the computer is now behaving like a brand new machine (ie. the "welcome" show that plays on bootup )
My question is can I now reinstall iLife without going through the setup process on the machine ? I will be selling this computer very soon and want it to appear as it would out of the box.
Is there a way to do this ?
Thanks heaps .. All help appreciated.

when I click on the "install OSX and bundled software" icon and restart the machine im still getting grey screen, black screen, grey screen, black screen as the machine is trying to reboot.
Since the machine currently has a newer OS installed, you probably need to erase the hard drive again and reinstall completely fresh, from the gray disks.  If that doesn't work, then the disks have probably gotten damaged somehow, which leaves you in a bit of a pickle.  Legally, you can't sell the machine with software that you're not including disks for.  Apple will replace the gray disks for a small fee, but you'd have to wait for them to arrive, or you could get a copy of SL for $29 and let the buyer know they'll need to get replacement gray disks from Apple.  Or you could wipe the drive, sell it as-is and let the buyer know about the lack of system and disks, though that will affect the price people will be willing to pay.
I just thought it would be best to take the computer back to its original state, as it shipped, to sell.
It is, and you absolutely should be commended for that.  Most people just slap the machine in a box, with no disks and with all their junk still on the hard drive.  The only place you went wrong was using the wrong disk!

  • How do I get application manager to install products after a system restore removed them?

I had some issues starting the computer and had to use system restore to get it runnng.
But that meant that all the applications I installed using creative cloud were gone.
When I started the Application Manger, It read that all the applications that I had installed were still installed.
I don't know how to reset anything to reinstall what I lost.   As you can see I says the installed programs are up to date. But they are not on the hard drive.
If anyone can help,   thank you very much.  Or I wait till they open tomorrow.      Barry

    Hi Mylenium
i did a Forum search upon AAM issues and came here.
My system and all installed CS6 Applications are running smoothly, just AAM shows some odd behaviour
Most needed applications are installed, but under the "All" Tab, AAM shows "install" on the right, see my screenshot below.
Contrary to that what is seen on the screenshot up there from user "Bar".
under "Updates" it shows all up to date (see screenshot below)
This way, I'm cannot be sure if AAM works correctly or not.
So i have followed your suggested advice and cleaned everythig up, downloaded and installed everything again, ugh!, but problem still persitis.
Usually it should show up which Applications are alredy installed, respectively are up to date and which application are still not installed.
Is there a known issue with AAM?
    Thank you.

What I am saying is ..........
The iPhone HAS to be active making calls on the UK carrier network for the carrier to identify as "theirs" and therefore eligible for the Carrier to unlock
The way to achieve this is to use a PAYG sim making and receiving calls to establish a customer relationship  with the Carrier and then follow the Carrier's process to unlock
With a PAYG it usually means adding a specified (by the carrier ) amount  usually £15 /£20 depending on the carrier
This is how O2 function and according to Gemma  this is how Vodafone work

Hi, having purchased and installed pages after my 30 day trial had finished I am now unable to save any changes to documents I had created in the trial version.  It says I need a serial number, which I never got when I purchased the pages app.  Does anyone kno how to rectify this, I would be very grateful for any help as I'm currently writing up my thesis and am now unable

Hi, I had the same problem and I found that you don't need a serial number anymore. Here is what I did:
(1)I went to Applications fodder on my Mac. (You can navigate to the Application folder from 'New Finder Window.')
    (2) Deleted Pages (installed as part of the free  free trial version) from the Applications Folder. Also deleted 'IWorks' from the Applications folder.
    (3) Started AppStore.
    (4) Clicked on  Purchases.
    (5) Clicked on Pages.
    (6) Clicked Install.
    (4) repeated (5) and (6) for Numbers and Keynote

If you have a Mid 2010 model: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If later then see below:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you have an earlier model:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Mac OS 10.4 Install Stops After First Disc

I'm trying to do a fresh install of mac os 10.4 on my mac mini g4. I restarted the computer with Disc 1 and booted up while holding C. I went under options and chose to do a fresh install. After it checked disc 1 the install began. After it finished with disc 1, it restarted and then it gave me the message, "Please insert the 'Mac OS X Install Disc 2' disc to continue installation. (You have chosen to install software that requires this disc)."
This is where the problem is, I insert Disc 2 and after about 10 seconds, it spits it back out. Nothing on the screen changes.
I've tried restarting it, inserting disc 1 again, restarting the installation process, and restarting while holding C with disc 2 in. None have gotten me past that message.
The discs I am using are the ones that came with the Mac Mini (two gray discs).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, That second Disk thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.
