Help, want to buy a new system

I dabble in video, DV since 1999.
In January I upgraded to a Sony HDV cam and just cannot go back ;^)
SW I own is Final Cut Pro 4.1 Academic (upgraded through updates to 4.5 HD) & FCE HD.
In the past I have used everything from an iBook G4, to an iMac G4, iMac G5, and now a 15" PowerBook 1.5 G4 + 20" Cinema with external drives.
My PB is a little slow working in HDV but it is not impossible, just very CPU intensive.
The recent Universal upgrade allows an amazing deal to upgrade my Academic 4.1 to Final Cut Studio, so I cannot afford NOT to do this.
So the question is IF I want to get a new CPU what should I get?
The tried and trusted dual or quad G5 or a new Mac Book Pro?
Or just wait a few months, endure the slowness of my current setup and get something in the fall? To me computers are tools and you get what you need when you need it, but I am nervous of how my pro apps (FC & Aperture) are going to run on Intel since we know they run well now on G5s
TIA for ANY advice.
Best,

If 10 was much faster and 1 was slightly faster, I would guess around 8.
I notice a significant improvement between by DP2.5 and my 1.0PB for realtime performance and render speeds. I don't notice as much of an improvement, however, between my G5 and my old Dual 1.25 G4. If you're doing DV, cuts only, not many effects, you're not going to see as much of an improvement.
If you do effects heavy, graphics heavy work, and plan to move past DV in the future, you're going to want to get a desktop system.
This is all completely unscientific, understand. But it's just what I've seen. I've never done any tests or measurements. Your results will also vary based on RAM, hard drives, etc.

    1. Don't do it and waste your money
    2. The US prices exclude Tax which is added at the till depending on state and can be upto 15% more than the quoted price. All EU retail prices are required to include local taxes and import duties by regulation.
    3. On return to the EU you are liable for 22% VAT on your purchase
    4. The iPhone does NOT have an international warranty. It breaks you are stuffed.
    5. The US models do NOT support all European LTE frequencies .None support the Band 7 (2600mhz) frequency being deployed by many European Mobile networks.
    6. Buy locally if you want all functionality warranty support and when taxes are included the prices are pretty much the same anyway.

Also, I had to install the software twice on my same computer before because I had to reboot the computer. I don't know if this affects the limit.

You are allowed to have two activated installations so there should not be a problem having working installations on the two machines.  If by chance you have somehow tied up two activations for the one machine you can have Adobe support help resolve that thru chat.

  • I want to buy a new i mac

I want to buy a new i mac but I do not know whether I should focus my money on spending more on RAM or GHZ? I will mainly be using my new mac to edit videos on i movie, view & edit my photos, browse the internet and play a few newer games like Diablo 3 & starcraft 2. I really don't want to spend more than $2000 on my new computer so I don't know whether to get the 21.5" with 2.7GHZ and upgraded to 16GB of ram with warranty for bout $1900 or go for the 21.5" with 2.9GHZ and only the original 8GB of ram with warranty for about $1900 aswell. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Pully,
Load it with as much RAM as possible.
Unless you take it from an i5 to an i7 don't even bother looking at processor upgrade.

  • I want to buy a new Macbook pro 15 2.3Ghz which is currently on OS mountain lion. Can I upgrade it to OS Maverciks when it is released?

I want to buy a new Macbook pro 15 2.3Ghz which is currently on OS mountain lion. Can I upgrade it to OS Maverciks when it is released?

I realized I still had this as an open question, so I thought I would follow up. By calling around, I was able to locate a Macbook Pro that still had ILife 09, so I bought that.
But then I found out I could actually continue on with Ilife 08, but just wiping the new computer and reinstalling the first disc (system) but not the second one (ilife). So then when I used a Time Machine backup from my old computer to migrate to the new one, it simply continued on with O8. This made me even happier as I really was trying to avoid Faces in iPhoto 09.
Thank you for the input (I did read it back when you posted it; I just did not realize I needed to "close" the question.)

  • I want to buy a new Macbook pro 15", but I don't like Lion, I want Leopard installed, is there any issues with drivers or any other I should be aware of?

I want to buy a new Macbook pro 15", but I don't like Lion, I want Leopard installed, is there any issues with drivers or any other I should be aware of?

Hello, I've tried Lion from the day they released to last week I got my computer formated and with leopard again, on my iMac 24" from early 2009 2.9 Ghz core 2 duo, and I have installed 8 Gb of memory, and i have some complains about it, there are some cosmetic issues but mostly I'm concerned about issues bellow the hood, as I'm a stock trader and I depend completly from my computer's performance, let me explain:
    Superficial issues:
    1. They took off "spaces" and I liked it.
    2. I dont use the magic mouse, I need a more accurate mouse for my charts, and it seems they built the entire OS assuming you would use the magic mouse for gestures, scroll, etc to try to mimic in some way the Ipad and Iphone functions, but what if you arent using it like me?
    3. I never used that little rocket icon that makes all your apps appear and that could be one of the "improvements on Lion", at first sight it looks nice and slick, but if you try to use it and make it part of your daily use, you would find it is useless, it is a pain to try to arrange it the way you like it, so I rather use the spotlight to search for my apps, its faster.
    Now the MOST important, 'performance':
    1. It completly suffocate my computers hardware Leopard much more lighter, beggining from the start up that taked almost 1/3 or twice the time, and I think Lion has some bugs bellow the hood, i was doing my normal stuff, some apps running and everything, and suddenly I started to feel the computer a little slow, safari taking forever to open the pages for example, and I opened the activity monitor to see what was going on, and it was there, I was using 4 or 5 gb from my memory, and CPU making insane peaks, and Im using 2.46 gb as im writing it doing exactly the same stuff, (but Im happily using Leopard now), and it wasnt once, as i told before, I used lion since the day they released it and happened several times until it drove me nutts. But leopard not problem in that regard at all, Never.
hope this helps, and hope some apple guys read that because lion resulted in a big disappointment for me.

  • I lost my iphoto app. and I don't want to buy the new iphoto 11. How do I download the old I photo?

I lost my iphoto app when i re-downloaded the apps. disc. I don't want to buy the new iphoto11. how do i download the old iphoto?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • I want to buy a new mac.  Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB

I want to buy a new mac.  Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB?  And would the stock 512mb video card be fine.

davidfromdartmouth wrote:Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB?
Specifically, after you buy a Mac test for RAM needs by calculating page outs as described below. The good news is that RAM is cheap enough that every Aperture user who can should upgrade to at least 8 GB RAM.
And would the stock 512mb video card be fine.
All 2011 Macs will "run" Aperture, but lesser CPUs and/or lesser GPUs will provide lesser performance. What "fine" is depends on your workflow and how demanding you are. There are some folks here happy with the power of the box you suggest.
    GENERIC UPGRADE ADVICE
Apologies in advance to those for whom this info is redundant.
Some general guidelines for operation of heavy graphics applications (specifically Aperture):
    • Only the strongest Macs will provide the strongest operation. Owners of weaker boxes (CPU, GPU, i/o, RAM) or older boxes will experience lesser performance.
    • There is a huge difference in hardware needs among workflows. A heavy pro workflow will only work best on a top well-equipped modern box.
    • As RAM prices continually fall RAM needs will continually grow. This has been true since the beginning of computing.
OS X has enabled Photoshop, for instance, to take advantage of at least 32 GB RAM for many years even though 32-bit operation limited direct RAM access to ~3 GB RAM.
    • All computers/OSs/workflows are different. Each individual user needs to carefully evaluate (meaning see what the early adopters report) workflow and hardware operation BEFORE upgrading any application or OS.
    • Hardware upgrades should be planned for always-increasing future OS/application demands, not just for today. After all, a computer purchased today is used for the next 3 years, not last year.
    • SSDs rock.  All users, all apps will benefit from using a solid state drive as the boot/apps drive. Strongly recommended. RAM-challenged setups will additionally benefit from 10x faster page outs.
    • All users should regularly evaluate their workflows by checking the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a work session; then rechecking after working. If the page outs number increased significantly during operation the workflow is RAM-starved and steps should be taken, such as increasing RAM or restarting and running only one app at a time - - or switching from 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation. [Note: this is a manual calculation of any change in page outs. Ignore the cute pie charts, page ins, etc.]

The MBA is so small and thin many people can't help thinking it is like a Windows netbook - an underpowered toy. It isn't. There's nothing I do on my top end iMac that I can't - and don't - do on my MBA. Of course the iMac has a faster processor, bus speed, and a discrete video card so it is much faster than my MBA. Then again, my computers spend more time waiting for me to do something than I wait for them - and this includes using Photoshop and compiling code.
If I were writing large programs - something like Word for example - I'd want a very fast processor to speed up the compile/debug/compile cycle. But for iOS development your codebase will be much smaller. Frankly I can't see that much difference between a 13" MBA and a 13" MBP for development purposes. Now a top of the line 15" MBP is a different matter with its much faster CPU and separate video card.

  • Want to buy The New iPad

Hello everybody. I need some help, please.
I`d want to buy the New iPad after i sold my iPad 2.
But Apple cant ship it oversea(i live in Russia).
Is there some shops, that will sell new iPads and that will ship it to Russia?

Not any authorized resellers.  There are people who buy them from stores and resell abroad, but for very high mark-ups in price. Your best bets are either to contact a friend in a country with the iPad and ask him/her to buy one for you, or to wait for release in Russia.

I want to buy a new apple tv but it used hdmi cables and my house is only wired for analog.  Is there any way I can use the apple tv on analog cables?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    It's do-able, but I don't think it's a great idea.
    DVI
Some users with DVI have managed to get their TV's to work with DVI-HDMI cables. DVI carries no audio, so alternative connections need to be explored to enable audio. DVI doesn't necessarily support HDCP as well as other standards used by HDMI (which may or may not be an issue)
    Analogue
There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
    HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
    Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projector which is used will need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p (Apple TV 2), 720p/1080p (Apple TV 3)
    DAC
DAC (Example Only - Not a recommendation or suggestion that this is suitable in your circumstances)
