Help! Want to buy used iPhone but it's jailbroken.

I am cautious to buy an Iphone 4S used because the guy jailbroke it.  I want to undo the jailbreak as soon as I get it, but will this reverse any and all problems that may have come along with the jailbreaking in the first place?  I want to be sure I can before I buy it tomorrow.

Jailbreaking causes permanent damage to the phone, and if you buy it then it won't have any warranty because it was jailbroken. Do NOT buy this one, and let the guy know why. It should be very easy to find one for sale that is not jailbroken.

  • I want to buy and iphone BUT....

I live overseas, a place where they don't sell iphones. It's all an open network here with people changing carriers all the time and most people are just pay as you go. I'm a Mac guy..I've got my Macbook Pro and I need a phone..I would love an iPhone but I don't want one with a contract from back home as I'm not living there. This may sound stupid but is it legal to get a second hand iPhone and use it here by just inserting a local SIM card inside the phone? Is this legal to do? All I want is to be able to use my iphone (not really concerned about even using it for internet purposes) but I know there is this thing where phones are locked and unlocking them in illegal. I don't want to do anything illegal, I just want to be able to put a local SIM card in my phone. Does this make sense?
    thanks!
sorry if this is a stupid question..

You cannot buy a legally unlocked iPhone in the US or Canada. You can in Italy, UK, Hong Kong, Peoples Republic of China, France and Australia. Plus a few others I forgot. However, iPhones are only repaired in the country where purchased. To be sure of getting a legally unlocked phone you would buy it directly from Apple or an Apple authorized reseller (e.g., Carphone Warehouse in the UK).

  • Want to buy an iPhone but Apple/AT&T Won't Let Me

So, I am a long time Apple user (1st gen iPod, iPod Classic, 1st gen iPhone for the wife and an iPod Touch) and long time AT&T/Cingular/CellularOne customer. I have a Treo 750 that is in the process of dying and I want to buy a 3G iPhone. However, because I technically do not come up for an upgrade with AT&T until Oct. 11, 2008, I cannot upgrade. This is absolutely crap. AT&T is telling me that this is the fault of Apple because they apparently are tied to the very letter of the upgrade policy. Part of me thinks they are displacing blame on Apple but I can see the issue from their perspective.
I believe I have a legit reason for the upgrade but feel screwed over by this policy/subsidy issue.
Just venting here because there is no way either of these companies care enough about the individual consumer to listen to reason.
    Just my $0.02.
    John

I don't know why AT&T is trying to pawn this problem off on Apple, but Apple has nothing to do with upgrading to a new phone. All of that is AT&T's policy and their policy alone. Once you get a subsidized phone and 2 year contract you cannot get another at the discounted price until that contract is over. You can get the iPhone at any time (or any phone really, those razrs are actually still quite expensive), but you will pay the full price.
In december when the guy got his razr and he was told he could upgrade at any time to the iPhone that was true, for the original iPhone. The original was not subsidized so anyone could "upgrade" and get it when ever they wanted because you were paying full price. Now with the iPhone 3G it is subsized and so it is subject to AT&T's upgrade policies.
I'm surprised that AT&T will not let the OP upgrade though, since he as been with them so long and has a dying phone they should at least offer the early upgrade fee which is only $100 more. Maybe you should try going to another store or ask for the store manager and see if they can work something out.

  • I'm wanting to buy an iphone here in japan but i want to know will it work when i get back to the us

I'm in Japan for 3 years and I want to buy an iphone but I don't wanna get it if I cant bring it back to the US and use it there too, so I'm wondring if anyone knows if it will work if I bring it back to the US?

No. There are no officially unlocked iPhones sold in Japan & there is no way to get any Japanese iPhone officially unlocked.
    Don't waste your money.

  • Wanting to buy an iphone

I am wanting to buy an iphone, but I need help. I don't understand the whole concept of the locked and unlocked phones that are for sale on ebay. What is the newest version and what do I need to look out for. I currently have service through at&t but may be changing over to alltel. Will the phone work with both companies?
I know I am being a blonde about this, but I just don't know that much about what I need to watch when purchasing.
    TIA

The iPhone is a GSM phone and works on GSM networks only - which is the worldwide standard - GSM networks dominate the overall worldwide market by a significant margin.
Alltel has a CDMA network and requires a CDMA phone. The iPhone is not compatible with CDMA networks. CDMA phones do not have a SIM card.
An unlocked iPhone - which can be used with a SIM card from any GSM network provider, is not covered under Apple's warranty. Unlocking an iPhone voids the warranty and eliminates any support from Apple.

  • Hey hi i want to buy apple iphone 16gb At&t But i want use in india how to Buy Please help me

hey hi i want to buy apple iphone 16gb At&t But i want use in india how to Buy Please help me

AT&T "low cost" options are for ATT subsidized phones.  Those require a two year contract commitment and are only available in the USA and those phones are locked to ATT. You can get them unlocked only once you meet the contract commitments. Such a phone would not be available for sale to you (as the contract requires USA payment and billing) and would be useless to you in India.

The iPhone warranty is not international.  If something goes wrong with it you will have to have somebody in the USA take it to a store in the USA for service (or pay for it yourself at home).

I have heard stories that Apple will not even look at an iPhone purchased
in another country at any price since they will not be able to replace with an
identical iPhone which is their practice ( carrier locked etc)

You should go onto the Tmobile web site and look around. Very soon a pop up window will ask you if you want to chat. You can try asking for someone who knows Spanish (if you prefer), they might have someone available who can chat with you in Spanish.
I give this suggestion because I remember on the Tmobile website, you can order on line, but they let you choose to pay only a little money up front, then pay off the rest over 24 months, or you can choose to pay for it in full. However, their ordering process does not say whether the paid for in full phone is going to be unlocked or not.
It may not be, You may have to make a request and say that since you have paid in full please unlock. I am not so sure that a paid for in full phone is automatically sold in unlocked state.
This is why I suggest you talk to Tmobile to get a definite answer.
Unless someone else on this forum knows for sure? Hope someone else jumps in to answer. But the best way is to ask for yourself directly from Tmobile.

My current situation: I have soooo many texts on my iphone and I haven't deleted many because I need the information contained in them for future reference and for legal purposes.  I would really like to find a means and way to save them other than on the phone itself. I've done searches for various apps yet I'm not finding what I think I would need.  It appears Apple does not sync the texts between the iphone and my MacBook Pro.
Try the computer apps PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac & PC):

If you purchase the phone at the full contract price and have no term left on your carrier contract, the carrier will unlock it for you. That's what I am doing with AT&T. I'll pay the full purchase price for the phone and since I don't have a contract with them, they will unlock it for you. It can be difficult to get it done since most of their customer service is very ill informed but I have had many discussions with them on their chat that I have records of them stating they will unlock any phone if you do not have an existing contract. It's the law.

  • Hi All! I have an iphone 4s. I want to buy an ipad but torn between wifi or wifi cellular. Can I use for sure, my iphone 4s as the wireless hotspot for my ipad if I get the ipad wifi only? And if yes, is the signal/connection good? Thank you.

Hi all! I have an iphone 4s. I want to buy an ipad but I'm torn between wifi or wifi+cellular because of the price difference. Can I really use my iphone 4s as the wireless hotspot for my ipad? If yes, is the signal good and fast? Thank you for your response.

    Yes you can if:
1: Your cellular provider offers a data tethering option.
2: You have subscribed to this option.
Speed will be as it is with your existing iPhone.
