Help wanted: X86 Boot problems...

My system boot failed from Hard Disk after X86 installation. But it can boot all ok from DAC floppy and then the system seems to run well. How can I solve that problem and make a successful boot from HD? Many thanks.

i got the monitor working - i had changed J11 not J10 (or vice versa, whichever is which) so thanks
now it freezes when i try and boot - im using a win98 startup disk, sometimes it freezes half way thru loading the cd drivers etc, sometimes it loads them and then i just cant type anything (but it cant be the keyboard coz i gotta press enter to tell it to boot with cd support)
i read that it might be a RAM problem - im running an athlon 1900 which is a 133/266 cpu, but my ram is PC2700 which is running at 166/333 - would this cause any problems? i went into BIOS and told the RAM to run at 133 instead but thsi didnt fix the problem
also, my PSU is 3.3v=28A, 5v=30a, 12v=15a
and the d-bracket has all 4 lights green

    Hello Surya,
Those look like SAN/Fiber devices. Does your /etc/system file include any forceloads to load the fp, qlc, emlxs, or sd drivers? If not that could be one possible reason why it's failing to mount at boot, but works okay from FailSafe.
Also check your /etc/system file and remove anything relating to SVM

  • Help! Mac boot problem!

When my Mac boots, a little bar appears below the apple logo. Then, the bar fills up very slowly. I know the bar isn't the progress of my Mac booting, because after the bar fills up and disappears, the spinning wheel goes on for like another 20 seconds. the Mac actually boots, and there is nothing wrong, but because of the little bar that shows up, my Mac takes 15 minutes to boot, and its a waste of battery and time. Please help me get out of this problem. Thanks!

That means the directory of the boot volume is damaged and a repair is being attempted. If it happens repeatedly, you should assume that there's a hardware fault in the drive, the internal cable, or the logic board. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. Back up all data before you go.

  • [nForce] Help with another booting problem with the MSI K7N2

Ok, I've been reading the threads and tried almost all of the solutions to no avail. Here is the issue...
While adjusting speed in bios, Upon reboot the system would not display video. Steps taken to solve:
*Betwwen all changes I unpluged all power from system
    1. Cleared CMOS VIA Jumper, Turned system on, no change
    2. set J10 Jumper to default then restarted, Still no video.
    3. Checked & reseated memory & CPU. Still nothing.
    4. Removed battery for about 30 seconds (Am going to try to remove it for 30 mins when i get a chance tomorrow) still nothing
At this point i assum the motherboard was bad. I tested botting up with no memory in an attempt to get the warming/error beeps but nothing the system just idles.
Am i missing something?  Any help suggestions or links to solutions would be greatly appretiated.

Sorry, I wasn;t trying to be vague, Was messing with the comp for a couple hours and got fed up. You were right, it was the k7n2. It's not mine it's a friends and wasn't around so i was going by memory. It had been running descent but was never properly installed (software) and was poorly cooled (hardware) so it had overheating restart issues. This is where I come in. I told my friend i would take a look at his computer. It was home built by one of his friends. Te system is fairly basic and the only plug in card used is a agp video card. The computer was working great after i reinstalled the CPU with proper thermal conducting when in BIOS his Athlon 2.6 was set for 1.8 I adjusted it up to the proper setting and he asked if i could bump it further. I attempted but it was unsuccessful and didn't boot. I cleared cmos with the jumper and it booted up again no problem. I stupidly went back in a fiddled around some more with something i shouldn't have because i don't remeber what it was. I belive it was the FSB Speed, but i'm not positive what change cause this particular shutdown. I'm no computer technichian, just a hobbiest. I cleared the Jumper again but this time it dodn't come back and boot. I then looked in the book and found out about jumper 10 (i think) for the SAFE MODE 100mhz boot. I set it as well with no response. I then disconnected the power cable from the PSU and unluged the battery for about half a min or so. cleared teh cmos jumper again, kept the safe mode jumper in safe mode and tried to reboot. It still just hangs. No screen, so Bios check or wrning beeps. It just idles. It revs the hard drive up for about 20sec or so but that is it. I'm going to try the suggestion earlier in the eact oprder giving by osnavi for the reseting cmos. I tried those steps in vvaroius orders 5 or 6 times before giving up.
Any help is appretiated. Thanks for your responses.

  • Solaris 8 on x86, boot problem

    hello everyone,
I've installed Solaris 8 on my old Pentium II computer. When I boot it, the hardware configuration wizard always shows up, asking me to do a full scan. The first time, I had to change the keyboard layout, but afterwards, it's allready ok after the full scan. My question is, why doesn't solaris know what hardware I have after one full scan? Can I turn this full scan feature off somehow?
    thanks!

During the screens, theres a point at which you can hit F4 for options (it shows on the bottom line). One of the options will be to set it up to autoboot.
I can't recall if you have to save a named hardware configuration or not.

  • Help with boot problems

I was trying to install XP last night on my imac with boot camp and ran into this problem.
The partition I would create in Boot Camp would never show when rebooting with the XP cd so I thought, Maybe its on the next screen of XP install.
I SELECTED the only partition it showed me and realized that was not the one and exited XP setup. Now It shows my Mac HD as "windows". Note: I did NOT format the drive, nor tell it to do anything... I think it only erased the boot record?
How can I restore the boot record of OS X or is there any way to get data off that drive before formatting/reinstalling OS X?
Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks guys!

More info that might help, still having the problem.
I had been following along on the Boot Camp Installation Guide, when I boot into Windows Setup, I was looking for the correct partition, all I see is one partition "C:Partition1 Unknown"....
I SELECTED it, and then I backed out of the Setup. I didn't format it.
I didn't see the <BOOTCAMP> partition in the list, and that's what I was looking for.
Now the OS X drive shows as "windows" and unable to boot into OS X.....

  • Cold boot problem with X-FI Fata1ty card... Need serious help!

    Hey guys:
I just finished upgrading my computer. Realized that I have a cold boot problem. In order to identify the source of problem. I began the following test.
. Remove everything except, cpu, heatsink, ram, video card. Tried to boot with those devices. => No cold boot problem.
    2. Install the rest of the ram sticks (I have 4 x 52 in total). => No cold boot problem.
    3. Install the other video card (my setup is 7900gtx in SLI) => No cold boot problem.
    4. Install the Creative X-FI Fataty card. => COLD BOOT PROBLEM
Once the computer is shut down via the front power switch on the case, the computer will not boot again. To boot the computer, I need to switch off the main power switch on the back of the psu and switch it back on; then turn on the computer via the front power switch on the case. I tried the problem with and without the sound card. Whenever the sound card is installed. There is the problem. If there is no that sound card in my rig, then there won't be any cold-boot problem.
    My rig specs:
    DFI Lanparty nF4 SLI-DR Venus
AMD Opteron 65 CCBE 609 - Stock speed
    4 x 52 MB G.Skill Samsung TCCD LE 2.85V DDR 400
CPU Cooling - Tuniq tower 20
    2 x EVGA 7900 GTX Stock - SLI
    3 x WD Raptor 74G RAID-0 SATA (-3) 0000 rpm (System)
    x Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 60Gb 7200RPM NCQ SATA - 4 (Backup)
    Pioneer Black DVR 0 DVD+/-RW - IDE /0
    Lian-li PC-V 200B Plus-2 with little case mod
    OCZ GameXstream 600W
Creative Fatalty Sound Card w/ Front Panel
    Logitech Z5500 5. speakers
I need serious help. This problem is so annoying.
Tnanks and will greatly appreciate it.Message Edited by White_Hair on 0-27-200605:4 PM

The onboard sound is disabled. Unfortunately I sold the Seasonic PSU to my friend. The OCZ GameXStream is suppose to be the higher grade psu than Seasonic PSU. Also, the cold boot problem only exists if the sound card is plugged to the motherboard. I tried change different pci slot. It doesn't seem to help the problem. Thanks for the reply Message Edited by White_Hair on 2-02-200606:07 AM

  • HELP! Strange  Boot / Start Up Problem on iBook G4 - Any NEW ideas?

    Hi everyone,
a bit information first: My early 2003 iBook G4/1Ghz has been working flawlessly all the time, been well operator maintenanced and updated regulary and gave me no real problems so far. Am working with it daily in the office and on trips.
Now, out of a blue sky, I face a weird, very stubborn boot problem after a sudden freeze/hang that enforced a hard restart a couple of days ago.
It won't go beyond the splash gray screen or sometimes the Apple Logo w/ spinning gear on start up. Safe Mode booting does not work either, no repairs are done obviously, it just keeps running for ever in "spinning mode" (HD sounds normal, though).
Tried all tricks, like PRAM reset, all peripherals disconnected, different start up modes e.g. into single user mode, won't work, no console appears.
Then -- sometimes after a night/few hours of rest -- it seems to boot perfectly fine to the desktop, all seems "normal", the HD appears, Dock, Programs, ... System Profiler didn't give me ANY useful hints to hardware or SW-related problem. Even the HD-S.M.A.R.T. info was NORMAL. Checked that, too!
After some minutes of seemingly normal conditions (about 10 to 20), I suddenly tend to get another of these really nasty hangs/freezes where no key combination will get you out, where no Apple Menu is accessable -> forces me to do a hard restart or shut off with the power button :-(( Same re-boot problem after that! (gray screen only, of course)
NOTE: Command-C boot from the CD Original Install Disc is possible, BUT when I try to launch Disk Utility to check/repair the HD, the internal drive DOES NOT show up in the list! Same problem occurs even with the great tool Disk Warrior that usally fixes almost ANY HD directory related problem
    • What could be the cause of this weird no-boot behavior?
    • Maybe an inconsistent damaged boot sektor on the HD?
    • Could I still acces it with any disk tools for testing/repairing?
    • Did I miss a trick to boot into some repair/testing routine?
    • How could I acess the HD maybe in slave mode to at least access my precious data?
    • Other good ideas to get me out of the nerve wrecking dilemma?
Your ideas and suggestions are very welcome and much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

If you haven't already try resetting the PMU. This is done by pressing ControlShift+OptionPower Button.
Perform an Archive and Install: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Backup your data and perform an Erase and Install
After doing either of the install steps, let the machine run for a bit to see what happens. Then perform software updates (repair permissions after each major update). Then reinstall your applications one by one, just in case one of them is the culprit.
Use the Apple Hardware Test disc that came with you machine.
If you come to the last point then chances are you'll need to send it in for repairs, as it will most likely point to a hardware issue once all the software has been ruled out.
Also, here is a link on how to use Target Disc mode in case your able to transfer your data.
