Help "Where is System Events.app?"

ok i did a cache cleaning with the itool, after restart my computer a mesage apear, a window of Choose Application pop up with thise, "Where is System Events.app?" after that the list of app's in my computer to choose, what should i do? and what is System Events?

It's located in /System/Library/CoreServices/. However, there's no reason that alert should appear. I suggest doing two things. First,
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Second, is to restart the computer.

If the dialogue appeared once, and you cancelled once, the dialogue may reappear when you next log in. For more certainty I suggest a restart of the operating system, then a log in.
If you like: immediately after the problem is worked around, open the Console utility to see whether — amongst its view of all messages — there is an obvious sign of what caused the dialogue to appear. (If you see nothing obvious, don't waste too much time looking.)

  • Start-Up Problem: "Where is System Events?"

My MacBook Pro recently had leopard unexpectedly quit. It happened about two days ago, and I reset the computer as the notification instructed. No problems once that was done, it was back to business as usual. However, leopard just crashed again today, and now, when I start up the computer I receive a prompt that asks "Where is System Events?" and waits for me to choose an application. The items on my desktop seem to be partially loading, with some looking fine, others seemingly unrecognized. What can I do to fix this, and how should that prompt be handled?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Well, with a tip off from another help post, I searched around my Mac for an app of the system events name. Spotlight showed nothing, but under Mac HD > System > Library > CoreServices I found one. So, I pointed the prompt to this file, System Events.app. It did nothing immediate, but upon restarting, everything seems to be back to normal. I suppose the crash somehow disturbed the system's set path for using this file, but after my manual redirection of it, the prompt has not returned, and no further problems have occurred. Sorry to have taken up space on the board when I solved it myself. Hopefully anyone with similar problems might find this note helpful.

  • Associate System Events.app

So I upgraded my Macbook to Snow Leopard recently, and after starting it back up for the first time after install, I was greeted with a dialog to locate the System Events app. After some googling, it appears that this is caused when there are applescript applications included in the login items.
I didn't know what was up, so I just clicked the cancel button, and haven't seen the dialog since. Although now it appears that the couple of trivially simple applescript applications I've written will no longer quit, they have to be Force Quit. This is annoying at best. Is there any way to get this dialog to come back up so that I can correctly identify the System Events app? Anyone have any more information on this issue? Thanks!

Well, turns out the system events.app wasn't the issue with my applescripts (it never IS Apple's fault, is it...). Fixed those, everything seems to be working fine. I still haven't figured out if there's anything I need to do now to help OS X out with that issue, but I'm guessing not? I'd assume that it's found/associated the file after start-up and should no longer be an issue.

  • Snow Leopard upgrade "where is system events" message on first boot

I just upgraded Mac OS 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard via retail DVD on my mid-2007 MacBook Pro (just upgrade, not Erase and Install). The install succeeded and the machine rebooted....Setup Assistant started and I got a pop-up window with "Choose Application" in the header and the message "Where is System Events" and the bottom pane showing the list of applications on the machine and the options to Browse, Cancel or Choose...
What does this message refer to?
    What should I do?

nobody seems to know for sure why this messages comes up for some people after upgrade. some 3rd party app you have is doing it.
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090828102610398
it's ok to hit cancel but it's also ok to select 'system events" which is located in /system/library/coreservices". also check your login items. if system events is there remove it from login items.

  • System Events.app requested - Snow Leopard

    Hello,
After upgrading my OS to Snow Leopard, the system asked for a file "System Events.app". I clicked on "cancel" option, as I did not find the file on my MacBook (System/Library/CoreService/System Events.app), and the installation ended correctly !!!
    Is this file important?
Shall I need to install this file ?
How to install this file, after the Snow Leopard upgrade ?
    Shall I run a new installation ?
Is there a patch to install this file ?
Appreciate any help on this issue
Note : It seems that my OS Snow Leopard is working correctly for the moment on my MacBook
    Best Regards
and many thanks in advance for your help and support

I had the same issue... Resolution? It's in System/Library/CoreServices
The consensus from other forums is that it is related to applescripts that run at startup. Not sure why the system can't locate it since it's a "Core Service", though.

  • System Events keeps crashing

First of all, forgive me if there is a more appropriate category for this to be posted in. I couldn't think of anything better suited to this exact issue.
On every boot, OS X brings up a standard "Application quit unexpectedly" dialogue for System Events. I can simply close this and disregard it, and it does not affect operation in any way.
However, just recently I have found that when I attempt to launch Adium, the open-source IM client, it hangs for a good deal of time and then brings up the same dialogue. Adium, in the end, is unable to start and must be forcefully terminated.
I was wondering if there might be any relation between the two occurrences. I do not know exactly what System Events is responsible for, and if someone could enlighten me, perhaps I could go about fixing the annoyance at startup, and possibly the problem with Adium at the same time.
    Thanks in advance.
Oh, another note: both problems started very recently, at least one of them around the time I updated to 10.4.11.

You can certainly remove System Events from Login Items, and I suggest you do. It serves no useful purpose by being launched independently in that way. It will be 'called' (transparently) by an AppleScript (or something similar) as and when needed. The time penalty for it not already running will be indiscernible.
However, sorry to tell you, but removing it as a login item is unlikely to make a scrap of difference to anything. Having System Events made to run in that way is unnecessary but should not be harmful in any way: it just runs consuming no CPU, only being used when 'called' by an app, and it is the app that is doing the calling that I would suspect. Did you also check /Library/StartupItems?
There is the remote (very remote) possibility that System Events.app itself is corrupted. You can easily check that. Launch Script Editor (in /Applications/AppleScript), paste this line:
tell app "System Events" to say "Hello Benjamin"
Hit <Enter>. The line should format (the text will change its appearance) without error; then hit the 'Run' button. If, as I expect, that causes no error, you are condemned to carry on playing "hunt the app".
Does the error message appear when you log into another account? (Create a temporary account if needed, and then delete it).

  • PLS HELP "System Events" Hogging 50-60% of CPU!

    Hi all,
I recently noticed that my Mac (MBP 2.2 GHz) would have the fans going really fast and everything was sluggish even when I wasn't doing much. I checked Activity Monitor and something called "System Events" was hogging at least 50% of the CPU! I force quit it...but after restarting, it was back and again hogging CPU. I checked login startup items and it's not there. Does anyone know what this is and how to disable it? This is getting really annoying!
    Thanks for your any help!

Download AppleJack 1.5 - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and install it. Read instructions on how to use the program and then run the routines. See if it helps.
When a process hogs CPU time it's usually because it's hung up on something, oftentimes a corrupted cache file. The above may help. Open your Console application and examine the console log and crashreporter log to see if there's any indication of what may be causing System Events to hang.

  • System Events Help!!

For some reason when I try to create an AppleScript that includes System Events I get back an error claiming there is no such app. I searched my computer and I couldn't find it either. Is there some reason why this would disappear? I am running 10.7.5.

What happens if you try this:
    tell application "System Events"

  • Open file With System Events

i have a backup and sychronizing program called Synk that is currently unscriptable. I want to set up folder action so that when i plug various drives in this program opens the correct backup files and the program.
So far i have managed to get the program to open and i have managed to get the open dialog box up, i have also managed to get it to click the right button to start the process. Where this fails is when selecting the correct backup file. The open dialog box appears and i can see which one i want it to select, but i am unsure of how i get system events to select a specified item from the open dialog box. It also fails to initalize when the drive is inserted.

  • Help with yet another droplet app

I've come to love these forums because I can get help so quickly!
I want to make an droplet app that uses a simple terminal command "adb push *filename /sdcard/"
I have a few apps that are similar, but don't quite work. I was able to make it push the file but not to the directory /sdcard/ like i wanted. Also the way i was doing it was only allowing me to distinguish one type of file (.zip for example).
this is what i have so far, but when i try to add the /sdcard/ the command doesnt work right.
    on open these_items
    repeat with this_item in these_items
set this_item to this_item as text
tell application "System Events" to get (class of disk item this_item) as text -- get the type of the item
if the result is "file" then -- files only
set this_item to quoted form of POSIX path of this_item
    do shell script "adb push {} /sdcard/" & this_item & space & signed_item
    else
    display dialog this_item & " is not a file"
    end if
    end repeat
    end open

Is that your entire script? If so at least one of your problems is the line:
    do shell script "adb push {} /sdcard/" & this_item & space & signed_item
For one, nowhere is signed_item defined, so AppleScript is going to error out when it tries to run this command (posting whatever error message you get when the script fails goes a long way to help identify the problem, BTW).
The second problem I see is that this line won't match your original goal:
I want to make an droplet app that uses a simple terminal command "adb push *filename /sdcard/"
From this it sounds like the input filename has to be specified between push and /sdcard. However, in your AppleScript you put this_item after /sdcard/, so you've reversed the parameters.
To match your original request your AppleScript command should look more like:
    do shell script "adb push " & this_item & " /sdcard/"
but I still don't know where signed_item comes into play.

  • System Events startup problem

Recently I noticed my Macbooks fans where spinning all the time for no apparent reason.
Upon further investigation I found out every single time I reboot my Macbook an application titled "System Events" will use up 50-60% of my CPU (continuously) until I force quit it from within the Activity Monitor and after this it will happily idle at around 3% presumably doing what ever task it does.
I didn’t want to outright delete the application as I have no idea what it does and its also inside a folder labeled "Core Services", seemed like an area to tread carefully within.
At least I have found a relatively simple work around but I was wondering if there is anyway to stop this happening all together?
So far I've tried to disable each application that is being loaded on startup one at time to see if its any of them, Ive also tried adding and deleting the offending System Events application from the startup applications.
Ive had no luck so far so any help will be much appreciated, if you need any further information on my Macbook I will be more than happy to provide it.
    Thanks for reading.
EDIT: Ive also tried leaving the Macbook running while I was at work for around 6 hours, when I came home System Events was still at 60%, the logic behind doing this was to see if it was doing some sort of task system wide and I wasn’t giving it enough time to execute.
Also these are the current applications running on startup.

    Welcome to the forums!
"System Events" is widely used by AppleScript and by apps using AppleScript. Do NOT touch the app itself. You can certainly remove it from Login Items without making a scrap of difference - it will simply take a fraction of a second longer for the calling app to use it.
IMO, you are going about things the right way. I am, in fact, surprised that one of those items you list is not the culprit. The culprit is most likely to be something in your Login Items or in /Library/StartupItems. You can ascertain which by logging into another, clean, account - create a temporary one if you don't have one. That will immediately tell you if the problem is limited to your account or is global.
Tell us whether the problem is global or not, and that there is no doubt that you have exonerated the above items, and one of us will tell you where to look next.

  • SChannel - Help with Error # 20 (Event ID # 36888)

Was hoping somebody could help me understand what's causing some SChannel error 20 events I'm seeing in system event logs.
Running Server 2008 R2 as IIS web servers, have a commercial wildcard SSL certificate in use on multiple sites and we use IIS Crypto's "best practice" settings.
Majority of our customers, monitoring apps and SSL labs report no issues with HTTPS, however we have one customer with a data-center hosted application which sometimes connects flawlessly, yet other times causes our server to generate fatal alert 20 and
reset the connection before it even reaches IIS.
Can't see any pattern to these issues and very little of the discussion online about error 20 seems to fit here as it mostly relates to invalid server certificates, low-level development with SSL or other "consistent HTTPS failure" scenarios while
    ours is more intermittent.
Reading up on error 20 suggests it should be indicate a "bad record mac", where I'm reading the mac to be a checksum of the SSL message suggesting the message may be incomplete, altered or incorrectly signed -- but not being an expert on either
schannel or crypto I could be misunderstanding what this means.
Attempted to find more detail regarding the internal error state value, with very little luck.
Tried enabling SChannel logging for errors and warnings (3), but that's not provided any more detail before or after this event.
Right now I'm not entirely sure what's causing the problem which makes it even harder to look at solutions, so if you have any questions or need more detail let me know, will try and keep an eye on this for the next few days.
