Help!!! where is the trash folder in mail?????

hello everyone,
i just purchased a macbook.. my first ever. i started using the mail program... but, there is no trash folder. ive changed the "mailbox behaviors" to move deleted messages to the trash mailbox... but there IS NO trash mailbox.. unless i am crazy... the only folders i see listed on the left side are :
INBOX
SENT
and the e-mail accounts that I have added...
someone please help me! i am sooo confused!

Well, that probably explains it. I bet you have checked Store deleted messages on the server. If so, this is not an IMAP issue, but rather an AOL issue (actually, .Mac is IMAP as well).
AOL doesn't let mail clients create mailboxes at the root level of the account directory, only as subfolders of Saved, and I'm not sure even that is possible now.

The instructions are for Mail 1.3, but they can be used for Mail 2.x as well, noting that the Special Mailboxes preference pane is called Mailbox Behaviors in Mail 2.x.

BTW, in the case of Trash or Junk, I don't see the point of storing those messages on the server, even if that would work. They take valuable space there for no apparent benefit. I would only store Sent messages on the server (which cannot be done with AOL either).

It's not calle Recently Deleted and is reached via the File ➙ Show Recently Deleted menu option.
There you can the remove them from the library or return them to the library.

I am switching from entourage to apple's mail program and there is not a junk mail folder. I created one but it will not let me designate the folder as the junk mail folder. it is grayed out. help

It is part of mail but if missing you could go to the top and pick mailbox and pick new and name that Junk.

Does the TRASH folder go into Time Machine?

So i've been able to backup time machine the first few times, but after that it says "the backup is too large for the backup volume". I have one folder "excluded" where i add and delete very large files (sometimes up to GBs).
I'm wondering if i delete these huge files and they go to the TRASH and then I immediately empty the trash...Do they get included into my time machine backup? Could that be what maybe causing the large size error? If so, where is the trash folder so that i can exclude it? Thanks.

I'm trying to clean up my mailbox and when I delete an item(s) I get a message that say's "operation could not be completed- file exists. Further, when I do this one message is copied (not deleted) to the trash folder. Can someone help me through this?

It's a POP account. I decided to clean up my mailbox today after noticing the computer was real slow after USA Today started sending their daily top stories with new graphics. Also before I noticed the problem with mail deletion - two things happened. 1) I updated security sofware as prompted by Apple and 2) downloaded Mackeeper and went throught some preliminary scans but did not buy their package. Thanks forn nstaying with me.

How do you disable the shortcut key in Mail that deletes all mail in the trash folder

Is there a way to disable the shortcut key in Mail in Mountain Lion that deletes all mail in the Trash folder in all accounts: <shift><command><delete> ?
I did it once by mistake and it deleted all my trash - it is very difficult to restore when there are thousands of messages in various emaiil accounts.

While you can't (so far as I know) remove it - you can assign a different (& less likely to be used accidentally) one via System Preferences - Keyboard - Shortcuts.
Go there, create a new one (or 2) for Mail only, and give it the exact name(s) if the menu item(s) in question, capitalisation & ... included.

Deleted a message from Mail does not move it to the trash folder

I am a brand new mac user, so it's possible I just don't know what I am doing yet.
I have added my IMAP email account to Mail with the following mailbox behavior:
When I delete a message from my Inbox, in Mail it appears to move to the Trash folder. However, if I log into the webmail interface I can see it actually still exists in the Inbox, but has been marked as deleted (there is a line through it). It is not actually moving the message on the server into a trash folder, like iPad does. If I pull up the Trash folder on my iPad, it does automagically reflect the item I deleted. However, on my phone (not an iPhone), the messages are missing from the Trash folder.
How do I configure Mail on my Mac to behave like Mail on the iPad? When I delete a message, I want it to move the message into the Trash folder on the server.

I figured it out. Mail created a new folder called, "Deleted Messages." I was looking in "Deleted Items," which was an old folder.

Gmail with Apple Mail problem: inbox label in the trash folder

I am using Gmail with IMAP In Apple Mail (3.6), after I deleted a mail from inbox, it correctly move the mail to Trash.
However, when I check it in the Trash folder in my web Gmail, there is a inbox label appear on every mail that I deleted from Apple Mail. Does anyone know how to deal with this issue?

All new mail is automatically being sent to the trash folder

This started 36 hours ago out of the blue. I did not change any settings although about a week ago I downloaded Mailbox (beta) to try. All my emails had been pushing correctly to mailbox up until this time with no problems. I deleted Mailbox off of my phone and Mac, and I have checked the settings in iCloud. I can watch as the new email comes into the "new mail" mailbox then as soon as it's there it disappears. I switch to the trash folder and there is my unread email with the blue dot all ready to be read. This is extremely frustrating - any ideas?

Y does gmail send many copies of a recent email to the trash folder when i send an email?

For those kind of mails, unsubscribing doesn't work. they're breaking the law trying to scam you, they're not going to respect unsubscribe. Unsubscribe only works with real companies. Such as unsubscribing from Gap company mail etc. Spammers can actually use the 'unsubscribe' as a confirmation 'hey, there's a real person here, hit em hard'
I'm not really familiar with g-mail, but most mail programs have filters you can set up, such as telling it 'everything with dating in the title, send to the trash' etc.
You can do some research on that or have someone help you with some hands on help.
If that e-mail has ever been used for e-greeting cards, or given to enter contests, etc, your address is out there. You will never get rid of it totally.
If it's really, really bad, sometimes what you have to do is abandon the address and get a new one and only give it out to people you want to contact you. Don't enter it on websites, or use e-cards or things like that that are spam collection mechanisms.

Question about the trash folder

Is there a way to find out where a document that is in the trash folder originally came from without using the put back option? Normally this would not be a problem since the majority of files that go into the trash are the ones that I told it to delete but if I have a program that puts a file in the trash bin after the program exits, is there a way to see where the program in the trash bin came from. This doesn't happen very often but every now and then if I see something in the trash that I didn't put there, I would like to know where it came from. The files are usually files that can be deleted anyway but it would be nice if there was a way to see the original path. Obviously the original path is still there somewhere because you have the put back option so it has to know where it came from in order to put it back.

That might be in a logfile. Your Console application might help.
