Help which files to keep in migration

Ok, I finally give up. I know there are too many underlying issues on my Leopard account that will only wreak more issues if left unresolved. Permissions and tiger files are all mixed in through a series of quick fixes to get up and running. (one of which is lost mounting of the external HD) I am prepared to start from scratch but I want to be able bring back my docs and application and setups. Which files should I be aware of that are most important and need to transfer back when I perform from scratch. Will my applications and such default to me as primary owner?

If you do an Erase & Install, you should recover mounting the ext HD. if that contains your Tiger bootable backup/clone, then just migrate it over. Also, you might peruse http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20041221081432908 and
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338 for other ways to restore mounting the ext HD.

What is reappearing is just the list entry with the indication that it is available for download - it's not taking up any space on your computer. You can remove it by control- or right-clicking it and choosing 'delete'.
The recent changes in iTunes have confused a lot of people. Here is a summary of the situation:
Only the most recent episode shows when you first subscribe. In the default  'My Podcasts' view click 'Old episodes' to show earlier episodes, click 'Done' to hide them or 'Add all' to keep them there and also add them to List view.
Alternatively, in 'List' view control- or right-click on the name of the podcast or the episode and choose 'Show old episodes' to reveal all the previous episodes.
In both views you can now delete both downloaded or un-downloaded episodes from both views by control- or right-clicking on the name of the episode.
In both views each episode now has a blue circle to the left showing it as unplayed. Each episode can be double-clicked to be played as a stream without downloading it first (so you don't have to wait for it to download fully). Click the cloud icon at right to download it (as you will have to to sync it to an iPod). Note that if you click the cloud icon to the right of the title of the podcast itself, rather than an episode, you will initiate a download of all episodes.

  • Is there a way to identify which files haven't been migrated from a backup?

I've just upgraded my girlfriends 13" mbp from Leopard to Snow Leopard. It was behaving a little strangely and being sluggish so I erased everything before the upgrade. I've used Migration Assistant to transfer most files from a Time Machine backup but was a bit unsure about transferring everything blindly as I'm a little worried about what was causing the problems before the upgrade. The only items I didn't select in Migration Assistant were the 'All other files and folders' in the 'Users' drop box, and the 'All other files and folders on Macintosh HD'. I left these as I wanted to investigate what exactly these files were but now I have no clue how to go about this. Is there a quick way to highlight which files were present in the backup before the upgrade that aren't there now? Are any of these files likely to be hugely important?
Also, because I backed up again after the upgrade, Migration Assistant automatically selects the last backup to migrate from instead of the one that has the missing files. Is there a way to select which backup file to use from my external drive?
    Thanks

It's usually not a good idea to upgrade a computer that's having problems. They may get fixed, but more often they'll get worse.
'All other files and folders on Macintosh HD'.
Those are other files, not in any user home folders, besides system files. On most installations, they're just a few Help files, but if you've installed things or created files at the top level of a drive, they weren't migrated.

No, unfortunately. You can only do that with a full system restore.
If you used +Setup Assistant+ when the Mac first started up, the user accounts now on the Mac are the same ones, and you can use the "Star Wars" display to restore selected items from older backups. But you can't restore an entire home folder, or the default folders in the user's home folder (Desktop, Documents, etc.); you have to select the contents of those folders instead. See #15 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you used the +Migration Assistant+ app, however, the user accounts may not be recognized as being the same ones, so may not have permission to see and restore from the backups.
It's a pain, but your best bet may be to start over: do a full system restore of the last Leopard backup, per #14 in the FAQ. Then try to address the "strangely and being sluggish" issue. Once that's either fixed or you determine it isn't a big problem, just install Snow Leopard over Leopard without erasing.

  • Help w/using Aperture on two computers - which files

I need some help with exactly which files to move so that my Aperture preferences, toolbar, presets etc. are the same on both my iMac (main) and my MacBook. I keep the main library on the iMac and use the MacBook for travel and transfer projects back to the iMac. Thanks.

Start with your user preferences and see if this gives you what you need.
    Quit Aperture.
In the Finder go to ~/Library/Preferences. (The tilde "~" represents your Home folder).
Copy the "com.apple.Aperture.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Paste the file to your laptop.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Where is the file that keeps track of which mail items were open?

Searching for the file that keeps track of which mail items were open- sometimes it suddenly is shorter, forgets some of the items of mail that was open, in my 'in box' as it were.
just happened to me- 15 emails I wanted to keep open till I answered them are now lost back in the mail stack
any idea where i can find that, retrieve from a backup done last week?
any trick to fixing this problem?
    hope so
i gotta track down some of those emails, will be a huge chore to do it one by one
    thanks

any idea where i can find that, retrieve from a backup done last week?
Good luck with that; it's not likely to happen.
any trick to fixing this problem?
You could just reply to the email right away, rather than putting it off until later, whenever "later" happens to be. Or, you could also put your emails that have not yet been replied to in a separate folder, and move them out into your Inbox when you have replied.

  • Which file in Omni.ja contains the version number in HELP | ABOUT

We are using Firefox in a corporate locked down environment.
we have made a number of changes to files in the OMNI.JA file to configure Firefox accordingly.
We now have a newer version of firefox to install/package however, when we replace the default omni.ja file in FF 10.0.10 and go into HELP | ABOUT it shows the version number of FF that the omni.ja file came from, ie 10.0.4.
Which file(s) need to be replaced in omni.ja so that when we select HELP | ABOUT it shows the correct version of 10.0.10 ?
    regards
    Bill

hello biffal, which changes to the omnia.ja file have you done originally? maybe there's a better way to do it, because this file will be overwritten by each & every firefox update...

  • I bought a mac 2 days ago and transferred some files on there using migration assist which I did not want to. How do I restore my imac to factory settings so I can start again?

I bought a mac 2 days ago and transferred some files on there using migration assist which I did not want to. How do I restore my imac to factory settings so I can start again?

Look in /Users folder. You can go to System Preferences > Users & Groups, open the lock and "-" delete the account it created.
This is a problem whenever you use migration assistant after the initial install. The proper way to run Migration Assistant is in Setup Assistant when you first boot your Mac. I don't know why Apple isn't clearer about this issue.

The way that Dropbox works is that it keeps a copy of all your files in your local Dropbox folder on your hard drive (which is, by default, directly under your home folder). Adding files to that folder will sync them to the Dropbox server.
You do of course have to download the Dropbox application to enable this (download link at the top right of http://dropbox.com ).
