Help... white screen

Ok i was downloading a new adobe flash update for mac and when i went to install it asked me to close out of any browsers.... so i did.... then it starts running slow and freezes up which is just what computers love to do....
not so much with macs tho... anyway i shut off my macbook and restart it and i get the white screen of death.... what gives?? i tried everything to fix it... loaded the utility disc, command-option-r-p, took the battery out held the power button.... i mean everything... im **** right now.... from what i have read about this white screen crap is i have lost all my data and files!
if there is anything else i can do please tell me? the reason i got a macbook as a laptop was to not deal with daily PC issues like software crap and viruses and such things.... but now i have a hardware problem and im not happy.... its only been a few months since i got the macbook not even thru my 2nd semester at college.... anyway i need a solution and fast and there are no apple retail stores here in tallahassee florida please help

It isn't a hardware problem and all of your information should still be in tact. Try taking the battery out and leaving the computer unplugged over the weekend. (48-72 hours). Then leave the battery out, plug in the computer and if the white screen comes up, insert the OS disk. Force a shutdown and then the system should boot from the disk, when it does do a system recover. If (God forbid) you can't you'll have to do a total reformat and reinstall. Basically something happened and the boot sector of your computer is corrupt. If you can recover your info should all be fine; if not, well you know. One thing you might want to think about doing is taking your computer in and getting your hard-drive backed up. I own a store and I know its a simple process to remove your HDD and put the information onto whatever type of media you desire. So hopefully this helps

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
With 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7 or 10.8 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • *Help* White Screen on Ipod touch 2g?

    Hi,
If you haven't already, try restoring the iPod touch and setting it up as a new device as shown here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3828.
The iPod will likely need service if the issue persists after restoring as new. You can get the iPod touch replaced by make a reservation with a Genius here: http://www.apple.com/ca/retail/geniusbar/.

  • Help! When I select "Phone" it tries to open and gives me a white screen and closes. I cannot view my missed calls or voicemails.

If anyone knows anything about this...
When I select "Phone" on my home screen the iPhone attempts to open it, brings up a white screen and then will shut back down. I have 8 missed calls or voicemails yesterday and I couldn't check any of them. Does this happen to anyone else?
Also, when I receive a call and I answer it does not give me the ability to end call or any of my options (sources, keypad, etc.) during the call.
Basically, I can't do anything with my contacts, favorites, missed calls or voicemails.
    Can someone please help?

I have tried that multiple times. I have also made sure that I have the latest updates. Would haveing 27,000+ contacts have anything to do with it?
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

  • When I try to access my iTunes Store from my iPhone 5 it opens with a blank white screen. Help!

I've tried for several days to open my iTunes Store on my iPhone. Every time it opens, but with a blank white screen.

    Hi Upswife,
When troubleshooting iTunes Store connection issues, the following articles provide the best information:
First, try signing out of your account in Settings > iTunes & App Store. Once signed out, go ahead and sign back in.
iOS: Changing the signed-in iTunes Store Apple ID account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1311
If the above did not resolve your issue, refer to the following:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
    - Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clicking on Check for Update in your device's Summary page in iTunes.
    - Check and verify that you are in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you are on a 3G capable device, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
    - Check to make sure you have an active internet connection. You can check the User Guide for your device for help with connecting to the internet.
    - Check to make sure other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the internet.
    - Try resetting (turning off and then on again) your Wi-Fi router
    - If the issue still persists see, iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connectionsoriOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections.
    Thanks,

  • I now get a blank (white) screen in the Viewer.  Can still drop video from the viewer into the canvas, but don't see it in the viewer.  Please help!

It doesn't seem to matter what project I'm working on... the picture in the viewer is gone.  All I see is a blank (white) screen.  If I put the cursor over the viewer and drag to the timeline, the clip will appear on the time line (and in the canvas) but I don't see it in the viewer.  I usually edit my clips in the viewer and not on the canvas.  Can anyone explain why this might be happening and how I might fix.  I'm suspecting I must have messed up one of the settings but I'll be darned if I can figure out which one or how to fix.  Please help!

David.  Thank you very much.   The problem was not with the canvas but rather the Viewer.  But the solution was the same.  Somehow, the Viewer window was re-set to Alpha.  I changed it back to RGB.... and the picture is back.   These issues are often very simple.... but they can drive you bats if you don't know the answer.   Very grateful.  Tim

  • My iphone is coming up with a white screen. i have restored it but that didnt help. any other suggestions before going to the store?

help! my phone is coming up as a white screen. i can hold the home and on/off button and restart it and it works until i try and listen to voicemails or make calls or turn the screen off. i have restored it and it still is white. help! anyone know anything to do before i go to my provider? thanks.

Clean the connector on the bottom of the phone. Use a magnifying glass, bright light, and a wood or plastic toothpick. If you got the phone wet put it in a bag of uncooked rice for several days, not hours.

  • White Screen of Death Questions [PLEASE HELP!]

If someone actually cares about my issue, they will read all of the following. Let's see how many of you are out here and how many just want to answer simple short questions for reputation.
Okay, so I've ran into my first ever iPod Touch issue. I've never owned an iPhone, but I have had an iPod in the past and know a bit about them. I'm going to be 100% honest and I need a serious answer because I'm upset and angry. If anyone can be bothered to read the following, THANK YOU. If anyone could help me out in any way by giving me suggestions/tips and/or a solution, THANK YOU. But anything that can help is appreciated.
I had my board shorts on when this ocurred. I went to the toilet, doing my own business. I had my iPod Touch in my bank pocket which went to about half way down my thigh. The iPod Touch at the time was facing away from my thigh. Pulling down my pants, the iPod Touch hit the tiled floor. It hardly even hit the floor, all I heard was a little click and I realised it was my iPod. It was flat at the time, I picked it up and pressed the Home button immediately to ensure it was okay. It sort of lit up like a white background, but had a very low opacity. Since it was flat, I assumed it was normal.
Putting my iPod on charge right after my toilet break, I waited and waited for it to charge quickly enough for me to see the screen as I was a little worried not having seen that faded screen before. When the Apple logo was to appear, it gave me a lit up white screen. I was so confused as there were no marks AT ALL on my screen or any other part of the iPod.
NOTE: My iPod is still under warranty.
Did my research and came to the conclusion that it was the infamous 'White Screen of Death'. Where do I go from here? I have no clue!
I have important information such as a To Do list and my Contacts within the iPod. I NEED to retrieve this information. Is there any way I can do this?
I can still use the iPod, as if the screen were showing. Sounds are working, but there is just a blank, lit up white screen. Sometimes when I hold the Home button, On/Off button & the Volume Up buttoon all at the same time for ~10-20 seconds, the Apple logo comes up as if the screen was all fixed. 5 Seconds later, it goes all funny as if there were faded white lines and a faded white background but still being able to see the logo/screen. When the iPod loads, it just goes back to the lit up white screen.
Here's another odd thing to this, when I leave my iPod Touch sitting in a spot remotely, without touching it for a few hours, when I come back to it and hit the Home button, the iPod will begin to work fine as if nothing ever happened. No white screen, no nothing, just simply use it as I wish. I can even sometimes lock it, and then unclock it again with it still showing perfectly. However, when I tend to click the On/Off button after this happens, or if I just continue to use it for ~1 minute, it will eventually do the same as the above paragraph in second last sentence.
    This may be important:
    The iPod charges fine.
The iPod can be used with my computer and iTunes fine.
To sum it all up, everything can be done, including using the iPod, but with a lit up white screen.
Here are some questions I have for you guys:
Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
If they won't, what should I do?
How much would a replacement screen cost?
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
What could be the cause and why?
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
I need this resolved guys. I'm very upset and angry over the whole situation. If a little thump on the tiles like that (it's not like I dropped it or anything) can damage the screen that much, then this devices from Apple can't be very reliable. All I'm asking for is some genuine service/help to resolve my issue. If this can be done, I will be one VERY happy person.
    Daniel

Will Apple cover this in my warranty?
As stated above it is not covered by the warranty as it will be deemed accidental damage.  You can try explaining what happened to somebody at the Genius Bar and they may cut you some slack and replace it at no cost.  They might not though as Apple has started to really come down hard on eliminating replacing accidentally damaged iPods at no cost.
If they won't, what should I do?
Again, bring it into them anyways and explain what happened.  You have nothing to lose either way.  Otherwise, you really only have 2 other options.  Send it to a third party service center to have them take a look at it and possibly repair the iPod, or do some studying online and learn how to open up the device yourself and take a look.  There are some excellent step-by-step repair guides at http://www.ifixit.com/.
How much would a replacement screen cost?
This depends on where or how you have it repaired.  Here is Apple's repair pricing guide.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Third party repair centers will cost less and they'll actually swap out the bad part rather than just replace the entire iPod as Apple does.
Should I attempty to open my iPod if they do not cover it by warranty? (I have not attempted as I don't want to void anything).
If you have a warranty on it still, I wouldn't quite yet.  Take it to your local Apple store as explained above.  Otherwise, I would only if you feel comfortable working with small electronics and consider yourself handy with them.
What could be the cause and why?
As stated already, it could be a damaged or loose LCD ribbon cable or the LCD screen itself is damaged.  As to what exact component, there is no way to tell.
How can I retrieve that important information? (Contacts & To Do List)
Make a backup of the device in iTunes before taking or sending it in for service or before you decide to open it up (if you do happen to go that route).  See here what is included in the backup of the device.
    iTunes: About iOS backups
If you get a new or replacement device you can restore it from that backup.
Have you got any suggestions/tips for me?
As I have already stated numerous times, try taking it into your local Apple Store and see if there is anything can do for you such as swap it out.  Remember that they are not obligated to do so since the damage is technically accidental.  Be kind and polite when explaning what happened. You never know what could happen!

  • My ipod touch has frozen with a white screen. None of the buttons will work to turn it off or take any action. Holding down buttons for 10 seconds plus does not work.Help

My ipod touch has frozen with a white screen. The on/ff and sleep buttons will not work whether pressed for a moment or held for more than 10 seconds as per help pages. When connected to computer it is not recognised and no indication in "devices".It has been working perfectly from Christmas until now. Was watching a TV prog via BBC iplayer when the image and sound froze for about 5 seconds then just white screen. Help

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
