*HELP* why are "edit in photoshop" images smaller?

Ok, for the life of me (I've searched this forum high and low and can't find an answer) I cannot figure out why when I go to "edit in phototshop" my images end up being around 7x13 instead of full size. I always import the images in full resolution (from my Canon 5D).
Of course I can select the entire catalog and "export" and change the size to whatever I want to but I'm afraid when I'm opening them up in CS5 from LR3 that I'm losing image quality.
So I guess I have 2 questions:
Is there an adjustment that will allow me to "edit in" in FULL file size in CS5?
If not and I save the files in CS5, then I see them edited in my LR catalog and I go to export them and make the image size larger (say 20x30 from the 9x13) that it opened up as in CS5, is there IQ loss?
Hope that made sense.
Any help is appreciated!

You are not the only person who has been confused by this.
For digital images, the resolution in pixels per inch, or pixels per centimeter, are truly meaningless. They do not affect the exported photo in any way. The same is true for the Edit In ... dialog box. The result of an "Edit In ..." is always a digital file.
If you are exporting with the goal of printing an image, then you could set the units to inches, and select pixels per inch, and for example, if you wanted to print a 4x6, you could set the long edge in the Export dialog box to 6 inches and the resolution to 300 pixels per inch, and voila you get an image that has 1800 pixels on its long edge, this downsamples the image, and may not be strictly necessary if your image is actually larger than you need.
A "Better" way to think about this is the following example — my image is going to be printed at 8x10 inches, I want it to print at 300 pixels per inch, therefore I multiply 8x10 time 300 and discover that I need 2400x3000 pixels (or more!) in order to print properly.
So with the above explanation, I still have no idea why Edit In ... contains a resolution box, as you can always change the final size in your auxiliary editor. Having a resolution field in the Export Dialog box might make some sense in printing situations.

  • Preset Issues with 'Edit in Photoshop' image

Hi guys, I'm running LR3 and CS5 on a MBP Lion, and I'm working directly with RAW files. I have adjusted the images in LR and used 'edit in photoshop' to correct blemishes on some photos. I want to apply some presets at the end to render a couple of different looks (B/W and Vintage) to the final edited image. However, I find that after the file comes back from PS, it looks good, but the photo gets 'normalized' and the develop module tools get reset to zero. Hence my presets totally blow the 'edited in photoshop' image while it works just fine on the original raw.
I have also tried to work on the original image prior to any LR adjustments. Same thing, after coming back from PS, both stacked files look similar, but at the time of running the preset, the 'edited in photoshop' file gets blown out.
I do not have any auto adjust settings turned on. No presets running on import/export. What am I doing wrong?
    I really appreciate any help!
    -Liz

when you edit a RAW file in PS and save it you will have a demosaiced file (TIF, PSD or JPG).
they behave different then RAW files. so sliders will probably have a different effect on a JPG file then it will have on a RAW file.
it will not be possible i think, to get the EXACT same look when you apply a preset afterwards.
for example the highlights will not have so much headroom in a TIF or JPG ... compared to the original RAW.
so i think the best is to apply the presets first, render the files with the LR settings and open in PS as smart object.

  • Why are my lab processed images always overcropped?

This bugs the heck out of me.
No matter where I have my files printed, they are cropped more than the original.
I've had them printed by Snapfish, at better local labs, at Costco and Sam's Club stores, and even on an Epson PictureMate I bought.
My Canon 20D shoots at a 2x3 proportion, of course. If I edit in Photoshop or PSE I use the crop tool and select 4x6 before saving the file. In other words the file is exactly as I want it to print. Yet in every case, no matter where the files are printed, the image is further cropped by the processor. I haven't measured, but I would guess by an eighth- to a quarter-inch. I've talked to Noritsu and they have no explanation. Nobody has had an explanation. When the same thing happened with the PictureMate I called Epson and was told to experiment with a percentage reduction for each file. Fat chance.
Why, when I provide a properly sized file, is it invariably printed with further cropping, and how can I prevent it?

The machines always crop based on the settings imposed by the manufacturer.  You may want to crop to 6.2x4.2" , for example, and allow the machines to crop, as they will. Hopefully, the information that is deleted is not critical. I became aware of this several years ago when I added a date for identification in the lower, right corner, and half of it was cropped off. I now place the date not so close to the edges.

  • Why are my Jpg files so small after being saved from Nef

    Hi,
I am finally posting after months of trying to figure out why my images are saving so small, some 4mb after converting from Nef to Jpg.
I am shooting with a Nikon D4s and came from a D800. I was spoilt with really large file sizes and now I am freaking out because my jpegs are so small.
I am checking all the right boxes as far as I can see to save the jpg as large as I can, and I am not cropping the images before saving as Jpg.
Has anyone else had this problem? I can't understand why a camera as amazing as the D4s is giving me such small files. I have read everywhere that my files need to be over 6mb to be classed as high res.
The only thing that I can think of is maybe I am pushing my nefs too hard in camera raw/lightroom resulting in a loss of quality? Although my exposure is correct 90% of the time so Im only playing with highlights or luminance.
Can anyone walk me through the process of what I should be doing so I can end this headache!
    Thanks in advance!

Images are 16pm (4928x3280px as you say), and the doc is 48mb.
So here's where I really show myself up... am I right in assuming that the more adobe compresses an image the lower the mb is on the final file, meaning if there is less detail (i.e. the low-key image is predominately black) then the jpeg will be smaller. Does this affect the print quality?
4mb seems very low res to me. How can I retain as much of the information as possible? Do you think I should sharpen more to retain detail? Or does it even matter and I'm fretting over nothing!
Okay. The file dimensions are fine, so we're talking purely about content and compression.
As I already said, the low-key image contains very little data in the first place (lots of black and no colour), so it compresses well.  The dreamy woman image contains a lot of plain blue sky and out-of-focus background, so that compresses well too. No surprises there.
Have you got any more detailed images with greater depth of field? Try creating a JPEG of that and see how big the file is.
An Adobe JPEG Quality setting of 12 means minimum compression and therefore maximum file size. But, even so, if you saved an image which was just a single plain colour, you would find that the resulting JPEG would be just a few kB. This is how compression works.
The lower the quality number is set, the higher the compression, the more detail is lost, and the more JPEG artefacts are created in the image.  You are already saving at 12 quality, which is the highest setting, so you are minimising any problems with detail. You should save as TIFF if you want absolutely no loss of detail, but the file sizes are much bigger.
4MB is not a resolution. Think of it as packing a suitcase. If you're taking lots of books, you won't get the lid down. If you're taking lots of soft woollen sweaters, you can take lots. 4MB is an indication of the space that your packed image takes—if it's made of light fluffy stuff then it will be a smaller suitcase! :-)
You should sharpen your images the same as any other. Large areas of plain or out-of-focus background need not be sharpened. You're okay. Stop worrying!

  • Why is Edit in Photoshop command missing or refers to Photoshop Elements?

Q Why is the Edit In Adobe Photoshop command in the context menu missing when I right-click on a photo in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom?
    or
Why is the same command under the Photo menu grayed out, and in the External Editor tab of the Preferences the upper box is labeled "Edit in Photoshop (Not Found)"?
    See linked
    Adobe Technote for more information

I just realised what I was doing wrong.  I installed Photoshop Elements 10 but I was launching Photoshop Elements Editor not Photoshop Elements.  I had no idea there were multiple applications!  Now that I have launched the main Photoshop Elements Application (it then brings up a dialog where you select organize or edit) the "Edit in Photoshop Elements 10" menu item has appeared as expected in Lightroom.

  • Edit in Photoshop - Image Reset?

It appears that when image is opened in PS via "Edit in" command, all develop settings are removed and image is back to as-shot colors, contrast, etc. How can I avoid this, and edit/print the image as it appears in LR?

Not as far as I know.  PSE opens a new image in the editing window according to its own internal formula for size.

    purplerain,
The path to serve as the Clipping Path needs to be a single path, possibly in the form of a compound path. Is it?
If it is, and if you can see both the (compound) path and the image highlighted (on the Artboard/in the Layers palette/wherevere) when selected, something may have become stranger than usual.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Why are edit (Cut/Copy/Paste) controls not active?

I am new to QT. I am trying to cut up a large mpeg file (created by converting and IFO file from a DVD) into small video clips. However the main editing controls (undo, redo, cut, copy, paste, delete and trim to selection) are all de-activated. I don't have this problem with other mpeg files.
    Any ideas why?
    Dell Notebook Windows XP

MPEG-1 and 2 are playback formats and can't be edited using QuickTime Pro. It can't extract or export the audio portion from these muxed track formats.
MPEG Streamclip (Free) can convert MPEG to QuickTime formats and can also do basic editing.
You'll need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20) and the software above to convert DVD (MPEG-2 format).
The component can't convert or open CSS encrypted (Hollywood) DVD's.

  • Why are my exported files so small with lightroom 3?

I have been editing 10 mb raw files and they are no bigger than 2 mb jpegs afterwards.why is that?
i have been using presets while editing and i reset all settings at some point as my crop tool wasn't working properly.the resolution slider in the export window is at 100%, 240 pixels per inch, and everything else seems to be the way it was before. What am i doing wrong? I used to get much bigger exported files, cca 7-8 mb.

I have just imported  raw file from my camera, taken at a full resolution of 21 MP. The raw file has about 23mb and the exported jpeg without the resize to fit box ticked 7 MB. I uploaded the photo on the website and it's still not good enough for a 20''x30'' print. I am not sure if other websites accept other formats than jpeg, as this one doesn't. Not that i want to use them but it was the easiest way for me to check.
I am not sure if my client will want a canvas print, i am only assuming they might as they did in the past and i want to know what to do if that happens. I read that genuine fractals 6 pro is good, enlarges about 4 times the original size.
The ppi image resolution required for "handheld" print viewing is higher than that for pictures to be hung a wall and viewed at a distance of  three feet or more.
The ppi image resolution required for a large canvas print is even lower, with good results obtainable a 100 ppi. Canvas prints have a textured surface that reduces the print resolution and doesn't require as high ppi image file. Print houses use RIP engines that process the image file for both paper profile and printer native resolution. These RIP engines use very sophisticated "upscaling" algorithms, which are as good or better than a photo editing software application such as LR and Genuine Fractals. Because of this it is advisable not to upscale image files to meet a specific printer resolution such as 300 dpi.
Your 21 mp image files (5184 x 3456) at 100 ppi equates to a 50" x 33" canvas print with edge wrap. Many print houses only accept sRGB profiled JPEG files, but exporting from LR with 100 Quality you create a virtually lossless JPEG image file. You should have no difficulty producing a high-quality canvas print from a well processed 21 mp raw image file up to 50" x 33" in size.
For enlargements on regular photo paper 150 ppi minimum is required for good results. For your 21 mp image files this equates to 35" x 23," so there should be no problem printing 20" x 30" enlargements for framed wall mount viewing.
What website gave you the "still not good enough" message for the 20" x 30" print and what is the actual resolution (???? x ????) of the JPEG file you uploaded? Reimport that JPEG file into LR to see the resolution if necessary.

  • New Mac: Why are CC and Photoshop Elements not working when Lightroom and Reader are fine

Last week I changed computers (swapping an old Mac for a 13-in MacBook Pro Retina running OSX Yosemite 10.10.3. I copied all my data over to the new machine using Migration Assistant.
All programs work fine (including my copy of Lightroom 3 and Reader XI). But my CC and Photoshop Elements 10 do not. I have tried uninstalling both, but whenever I try to reinstall PE10 from its disk or download it just stops almost at the end. I then I get an "initiation failed" message, along with a request to download the now defunct "Support Advisor" app!
I cannot download Adobe Application Manager, or the CC desktop app either - for the former I get an "initiation failed" message, along with the "download Support Advisor" app" message again! For the latter I get a message saying "Adobe Creative Cloud Is Needed to Resolve this problem - however it is missing or damaged." Then I get a message and a link to download Creative Cloud. Then when I've downloaded it and I click on the installer... it runs for a bit and then I get the message again: "Adobe Creative Cloud Is Needed to Resolve this problem - however it is missing or damaged." And I get a prompt and link to download the CC app. Guess what happens next? And so it goes on. And on and on, in a tedious circle.
This is incredibly annoying and frustrating as I have work to do! Anyone have any ideas what's happening?
    Cheers

do not use migration to install adobe programs.
you should uninstall and clean whatever you've done, Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
then dl the cc desktop app to your new computer and use it to install your adobe cc programs, Download Adobe Creative Cloud apps | Free Adobe CC trial
if you have non-subscription adobe programs, use the installation files for them:

  • Can't see Jpegs that are edited in Photoshop from RAW

    Hi everyone,
I shot some pictures in RAW on my Nikon D70. I imported them to iphoto using a card-reader. I have iphoto set up to use Photoshop for editing. I double click on the photo in iphoto and it opens up in Photoshop...I edit as normal, change it to 8-bit, and then save as a Jpeg. In the past, my changes are reflected in iphoto.
Now, when I look at my photos in iphoto I still see the original RAW photos. Now if I edit the RAW photos in iphoto instead of Photoshop, the changes that I've made are reflected.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong here? I just want to be able to see the modified jpegs that I know are there.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thank you so much for the reply...That sort of makes sense...so I guess that with Raw photos I have to edit them from my desktop folder and then after I am done, just import the jpegs into iphoto. That is bizarre!! I would have sworn that in the past I could import my raw photos into iphoto, edit them in photoshop (via iphoto) and then when I save them, the saved jpeg is what I saw in iphoto.
I guess not! So now the question is this...where are all of those jpegs that I already edited being stored???
Thank you very much for the answer to my question!

  • Why are my files exporting so small? (15 mb RAW files exporting to 2 mb JPEG)

I'm trying to export RAW files into JPEG for a client and haven't experienced this issue before. I shot on large format RAW and original files are around 15 mb. When I export them in lightroom they end up around 2 mb. I know that I can still print large files from this but I'm worried that my (wedding) clients will see the file size and worry about enlarging prints, etc. Is there a way to export them so they are larger? I'm currently exporting at 100%. Help please!

File size really doesn't provide useful information. And since JPG is compression, I see nothing unusual about a 15mb original RAW exported as 2mb JPG. If you are worried about file size, then you are not looking at the right numbers.
You need to look at number of pixels in the original image, and number of pixels in the exported file. Anything else will lead you in the wrong direction.
