Help! Why is my 12" White iBook screen Black?

Help!
When I turned on my iBook, the White apple appeared center screen, then the screen became whitish gray. Thinking the operating system was lost, I erroneously tried a Pismo trick. I turned it off, then rebooted while holding down the X key.
It has been completely black ever since. Resetting the PMU while pressing "ctrl, option, shift, power" has had no effect. Is there something I can push to get the whitish gray screen back? I'd be happy just to see the apple appear center screen again.
Maybe someone knows where to purchase backlights and where on the internet to find installation instructions. If anyone can tell me how to hook the up to my iMac G3 DV, or my PowerBook G3 Pismo, then I can test to see if it is a monitor problem, software problem, hardware problem, or I shouldn't have held down the "X" key problem.
Thanks in advance for any help at all,
A Little Fish in a BigMac Pond

Hi Philip,
You were correct! It was the logic board. It turns out that my iBook was a G3 (not a G4) that qualified for the repair program. Even though I missed the cutoff deadline by one week, they fixed it anyway.
Apple sent me a box via DHL on a Friday morning. DHL picked the box back up that same Friday evening and FedEx had the Computer back in my hand and working by Monday morning.
Wow! Talk about your class act. Now I see why it is that once you go Mac you can't go back! I am through with PC's forever!

• 14" iBook screen blacks out

This is the third time it's done it today and the 5th time ever. My AppleCare ran out the middle of March, so I guess they are right on in determining when it's time to get a new computer.
When it blacks out, it just goes immediately, no flickering, no warning whatsoever. I can still see the desktop underneath the black and I can still move the cursor. I don't know anything what the insides are like, but the apple light on the top of the case goes out when the screen blacks out.
When I closed the top and opened it again, it brought the screen back up right away. But this last time, it took a few closing and openings to get it to come back up, making me think it's going to get worse.
Last week was the first time it ever went black. I initially thought it was falling in to sleep mode and held down the power key to get it to reboot. I'm pretty sure sleep has nothing to do with it, but I set my display to not go to sleep at all today to find out. It's blacked out twice since.
I don't use a screen saver, it's happened on battery and power adapter. Other people have mentioned the fan not running, I can't remember ever hearing my fan run or else it's just so quiet I can't tell the difference between it and the hard drive.
My iBook is a late 2004 model 14" 1.33 and, I just upgraded to Tiger (coincidence?) There have been no other problems to speak of other than the keyboard losing letters, battery needing to be replaced and the usual airport glitches. It hasn't been dropped or spilled on. Any suggestions on how to fix this and what I might be looking at when/if taking apart the screen?

It sounds like you might have a bad inverter cable, especially since it is affected by the position of the display. I think this is just a mechanical failure of the cable caused by many openings and closings of the display.
You might check out the troubleshooting section of the ifixit site and read about the inverter cable and see if it sounds like what is happening to you. I gather it is a real job to replace it. Ifixit and Powerbookmedic would be two good resources:
http://www.ifixit.com/
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/
Since the job is considered very difficult, I'm not sure there are any instructions on how to do this on these sites. But there is another manual that might be helpful:
http://node123.cit.geneseo.edu/~stratton/ServiceManuals/
This is just the index. You will have to find the one for your iBook. Powerbookmedic also has a good manual.
It may also be possible to repair the cable, but I don't know. Spudnuty is the real expert here, and hopefully he will see this and be able to offer you more specific advice.
Good luck!

• Strange distorted colours on my ibook screen, blacks turn to reds, help!

Hello!
I am posting my display problem here so that i don't have to spend unnecessary money on it. So the problem began 3 days ago when i started my ibook, the apple logo that usually is the center of a blue screen, was a bit grey with some red highlights and the blue ceased to be blue to turn to purple... when it boots it shows a lot of red shades all in a distroted form, the black colour no longer exists and was turned into red, i also have a pattern of red diagonal lines all over the display... what can this be? i still haven't done anything, what do you recommend me to do?
Thank you very much!

Sounds like it's probably a defect in the video controller.
Are you still under warranty? If so, get it in for repair.
If not, check to see if you qualify for a free repair under this program:
http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
If so, take it in for inspection, and request service under this program.
I believe that this extension only covers G3 iBooks. So, if you have a G4, you're probably going to have to rely on warranty coverage.
If you are not covered under warranty or the extension program, then you'll probably be looking at paying for a new logic board unless they can find a simple problem.
But, it sounds like it's the video controller to me. This is integrated in the main logic board. So, it's going to require replacing the entire logic board.
The question is: Can you get it done free or will you have to pay for it.
Check to see if you qualify for the free repair.
I hope this helps.

• Ibook screen black out

hi,
When I reopen my ibook, the screen stays black. I can see a very faint outline of my desktop or whatever is open, but tapping the pad, or power button or anything doesn't light it back up. I have to reboot.
This just started a few days ago. I've noticed that sometimes if it's only been shut a short time, it comes up ok. I'm not sure if this has anythign to do with it or not, but it seems like perhaps I can get it back up by a short push to the power if the mail program isn't open. If it is, I have to fully reboot.

Hi, Matthew. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Maybe one of these links is the one you saw:
http://homepage.mac.com/mitch.chapman/iblog/C590069509/E1143560597/
http://www.omac.org.uk/ibookbacklightfix/
http://schwarztech.us/articles/schwarzibookcable.shtml
http://c2.com/wiki/iBookDisplay.txt
The official Apple fix is to replace the entire display. This may or may not solve the problem.
Dominion Tech (in Vermont, an Apple Authorized Service Provider) used to do the repair for $79.90 plus shipping both ways. You may want to check and see if they will still do it for that price.

• Why is half my iMac desktop screen black?

Just in the last few days my screen has been going grey, and now black. Half the screen is now black, and it's on the right hand side of screen. I've also been getting the spinning rainbow wheel, but thought I may have cured the spinning wheel issue when I contacted Apple, in February 2012, and purchased a Ram upgrade to a total of 4G, and OS X Snow Leopard, and then OS X Lion. Still get the spinning wheel a bit, and had some difficulty downloading some software upgrades. Tried the upgrades again yesterday...6 of them, and apparently the successfully downloaded.

It is most likely the backlight. If you are still covered with warranty or AppleCare take it in ASAP if not contact customer support and see what they will do for you. Work up the food chain to at least a supervisor

• IMac late 2009, screen blacks out running Yosemite 10.10.2

My iMac's screen blacks out for no apparent reason, and the computer is still running normally. But I can't see it.
I thought temperatures were to blame, resetted fans with Macs fan control to speeds, where everything is nice and cool, the problem persists.
The screen might black out, for no apparent reason while working, or when idle. Trying to restart manually, it might black out while in the login screen, or even the apple logo. Or it might even restart normally and work for 8 hours. I have been trying to leave login items out, even Macs fan control an iStats, and the problem remains.
If I clear PRAM while rebooting, I might get a new lease of working life, but not persistently.
The problem started around two months AFTER I installed yosemite and with no new programs installed at the time.
Please Help.

• IPOD Help~(cannot view anything except a white blank screen)

Alright...I never expected to post up something in this discussion thread this soon...since I got my 30gig iPOD just three days ago...and curious as I am to things...I think I broke it, hah~
Anyways...I need some help.
Here's the story.
I was updating my iPOD to a newer version, I'm assuming...and during the updating process...I accidently 'x'ed out of the box...and now my iPOD screen does not show anything except for a white blank screen. If I hold down the menu and center button for six seconds...It shuts down...but when I release/let go of the buttons...it makes a ring sound and goes back to the white blank screen.
And also...when I go to the start menu and look under the iPOD folder...it has an update your ipod thing...I clicked it...and it pops up with a screen, saying stuff like it's 'initializing'...and tells me to plug in my iPOD with the usb chord...but I get a message saying 'can't mount iPOD' or 'internal error'
I think I've tried anything there is to solve this problem...like the five R's...etc.
I do not want to think that I broke my iPOD already. So if anyone knows, please reply back.
Thanks in Advance

Hi Sky,
Hmm - I see the shapes, I'm not sure why they're disappearing when you draw them - too simple of a file to point at some other issue. It seems like something with the installation went wrong or is missing (the player that renders the Stage for AS3 documents). I think the first thing will be to get the update. Can you try downloading from this page instead of through the update manager? http://www.adobe.com/support/flash/downloads.html Then try running the executable that you download. If this doesn't fix it, Flash may need to be fully removed and reinstalled.
Jen.

• Help! Stuck on white/grey screen apple logo spinning wheel

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me?
I have a MacBook pro snow leopard 10.6 It won't start up it freezes on the white/grey screen with the apple logo. I have tried it in safe mode it has the bar underneath as it loads up to half way it goes off & the spinning wheel just carries on spinning forever!
I have tried cmd & v typed in a few things that I saw other people do then on the black screen white text the page is full of Disk0s2: I/O Error tried rebooting but same thing happens doesn't start up.
Then I put my mac os x snow leopard 10.6.3 installation, features and refinements disc in but still nothing! I'm stuck anybody know what to do?
Thanks in advance if you can help me.

If it won't boot with the just the c key held down off the disk, it could mean there is a firmware password set.
If it won't boot off the disk with just the option/alt key held down, that means firmware has been wiped if all you see is a white screen.
If it has a firmware password, it should have asked you for it with a screen with a lock icon on it.
However it also could mean there is a hardware problem or the 10.6 disk is dirty, scratched, defective or not from Apple (warz).
Or your keyboard is bad or your using a external one and not the built in keyboard.
I think you might have to look into the possibility your EFI firmware has been hosed.
See this section of my User Tip here: ..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Need machine/operating system identification help?
Find the serial number, thus the model number and thus gives the operating system that originally came with the machine. However gives not what operating system version the boot drive was later upgraded to. Do not use older OS X verisons to repair newer verisons. It is possible to use the original operating system version installed on another boot drive to recover files from a later operating system non-booting drive.

https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1559 http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
If the computer just ignores the at boot key commands (without showing the firmware password request) especially if you boot to a white screen (no initial boot screen), it might be your EFI firmware stored in NVRAM memory has been wiped. EFI is like a powerful operating system type firmware that loads before OS X or Windows in Bootcamp loads, programs can be installed in EFI, even malicious ones. (why it's very important to trust the source of your instaled software)
To restore EFI you need to use the identification links above to find the exact model of your machine. Then use another computer to download the correct EFI firmware from this Apple.
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Then follow these instructions to burn it to a cd or USB (untested) and apply it to the non-booting Mac. It likley will take 2 reboots for it to take hold and return the at boot key commands.

• MacBook pro stuck on white loading screen, help please.

Hi guys, yesterday I was playing on my MacBook pro and all of a sudden the screen went black and it turned off. Once trying to turn my laptop back on it was just stuck on the white loading screen with the appe logo and loading wheel. I've been surfing around the forum and tried some things that others have said worked for them but none seems to work for me, so I decided to create a question so I can get more personal help. I don't have any installation CDs for the MacBook, either which I know makes things more difficult but hopefully ill be able to solve this some other way. Please help if you can!
