Help! Why is my 2011 i7 Macbook Pro so slow?

Greetings, all. First ever post here. A bit long-winded so I apologize in advance.
I have a 2011 15-inch Macbook Pro 8,2 with a 2.2ghz Core i7, upgraded to 16GB Corsair Vengeance ram and a 1TB Seagate fusion hard drive (99GB free space). Running Yosemite 10.10.3. I'm in the beta program but have not installed the 10.10.4 beta software as of yet, so this is a stable release. In theory, this is still a beast even 4 years later - but as of late, I've been having some issues. If it tells you anything, my ORIGINAL 2006 Macbook Pro with a 32-bit Intel Core Duo (not even a Core 2) and 2GB ram seems to outrun it at times.
Startup takes between 3-4 minutes, dashboard widgets take between 45 seconds and a minute to display any information, applications take longer than normal to start, and Safari is having major issues. Safari is virtually unusable about 75% of the time. In fact, I had originally written this post in Safari and it became completely unresponsive when trying to post this. This happens often across all webpages. Many pages do not load period, and when they do, they load very slowly. When they do load, it's hit-or-miss as to how responsive they are. I have submitted this post from Chrome, which works much better, but I really do prefer Safari. Internet speed/router connection is not the issue, as I have other wireless devices that work just fine when this happens.
When performance is suffering, iStat Pro shows a processor load between 5-10%, with 4-6GB of the 16GB of ram being used - so this is obviously not an issue of not having enough processor power or ram, nor did I think it could be but I always check. The computer has been very well taken care of since day one and while it has been used often, it hasn't been used heavily. General use most of the time (web browsing, email, Facetime, word processing, etc). Light photo editing from time to time, and I rarely play games. When I do, it's an older flight simulator that I run on Windows 8.1 through boot camp. Strangely enough, Windows 8.1 runs flawlessly. I occasionally run a virtual machine (Virtualbox) as well. It runs the virtual machine just fine, though the computer does get hot, which is understandable and to be expected - but that brings me to my next point.
It also has periods with major temperature spikes - between 80 and 90 degrees celsius with no change of load or change of computer positioning, it just shoots up. Normally it hangs out between 40-50 degrees celsius. It's at 61 degrees right now and the only applications I have open are Chrome and a PDF in Preview.
I do have Kaspersky Antivirus installed, and it's possible it's partly to blame. However, I don't know how big a resource hog Kaspersky is. I know Norton is bad, but I don't know about Kaspersky.
Other than possibly the Antivirus, does anyone have any idea what could be causing these issues? Is there any maintenance I can/should do, whether it be on the hardware or software side? I'm fairly technologically inclined but I'm at a loss here because I haven't really done anything to my knowledge to cause these issues to happen. Any and all comments are welcome and appreciated.
Sound off.
Thanks in advance!

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
Kaspersky cannot possibly convey any benefit and its presence will only complicate troubleshooting. Uninstall it according to its instructions. This document may help, though it appears woefully outdated: http://support.kaspersky.com/8366. Unfortunately I can't help any more than that. I attempted to install Kaspersky to evaluate it, but the installer repeatedly failed for reasons I was unable to determine.
Determine if the problems also exist in Safe Mode:
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.
Corsair RAM is known to be deficient on Macs, and Google products are notorious for causing Macs to perform poorly.

  • Slowly I turned.... Why is my Quad Core MacBook Pro getting slower with each Lion update?

I upgraded to Lion on my 20011 15" 2.0GHZ Quad Core MacBook Pro. The machine crashed at least 7 times (reports forwarded). I upgraded to 10.7.1 hoping for the crashes to go away. It began to crashed once a week. On checking the console reports Virus Barrier and Kaspersky (****!) used with Parallels seemed to be causing the crashes.  Turn those puppies off and the crashes disappeared.  HOWEVER, the computer is slow; opening mail seems 50% slower than on my MacBook 13".  Today after spending 3 hours updating to 10.7.2, all apps seems to be dragging.  Any ideas out there?

OK. Here's some test results. The most intense process I use on my Macs is using Handbrake to encode either DVDs or mkv files to mp4 files which generally pushes all cores to the max. I am using the latest 64bit version of Handbrake on both Macs.
So I took a sample mkv file of 65 seconds length and ran it using the same settings on both the Mac Pro (2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon 8GB RAM) and the Macbook Pro (2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 4GB RAM), straight after starting up both Macs so that there was plenty of RAM to spare on both. I ran the test two times on each Mac and got similar results both times, with the best results on each machine being as follows:
Mac Pro: max RAM used: 380MB, Time for encode: 102 seconds
Macbook Pro: max RAM used: 495MB, Time for encode: 84 seconds
This was for a 2-pass encoding with Turbo first pass to 2200kbps MP4 file from 720p mkv file.
So the Macbook Pro is coming in considerably quicker for this particular task. I'm not sure why the Mac Pro used less RAM, and whether this is the main factor in the time difference. Like I said, there was plenty of unused RAM on both Macs when I ran the test. I am no expert on the inner workings of Macs!
Needless to say though, I am happy with the results and very happy with the new Macbook Pro.

  • Why is startup on my macbook pro extremely slow (3 minutes) after Yosemite install?

Prior to Yosemite upgrade, my mid-2010 Macbook pro (4 gb RAM) booted up fairly quickly (within 1 minute).  After the Yosemite installation, boot time now is approximately 3 minutes.  I have repaired disc permissions and that did not fix the problem.  Any suggestions?

nothing seems out of order, apart from the useless Norton Internet Security.
though, since you don't have lots of RAM, consider rebooting the Mac everyso often ( "Time since boot: 7 days 3:2:21").
"  Battery Health: Replace Now": indeed, the battery is dead
Did it start getting slow since Yosemite upgrade? (the new OS does tend to slow things down)

  • Why is 64 bit Windows 7 Professional running so slow on my new 2011 15" Macbook Pro?

I installed 64 bit Windows 7 Professional onto my new 2011 15" Macbook Pro and while the Mac partition runs fine, everything about the Windows partition seems to be slow.  There's hangups, random loading icons for processes that shouldn't require any work at all (even browsing through Windows Explorer will do this from time to time).  I don't undertand why this is happening, I thought running 64 bit would unleash the full power of my new Mac.  Should I just wipe it and do a clean install of Windows 7 32 bit instead?  I've never had issues/compatibility problems with installations of 32 bit Windows.

Well if you just installed it, then perhaps it's not validated yet and when it does there will be Windows Updates to increase the performance.
I'm sure you followed all the Bootcamp instructions about installing the Apple drivers and all that.
The only thing I can suggest is you reinstall it again after a few days and all the Windows Updates applied if it speeds up or not. Keep hitting it over and over. Make sure you have the free Microsoft Security Essentials installed or you'll get pwned really fast.
Also you have to remember that when Bootcamp carves out a Windows partition it's doing so at the bottom slowest part of your hard drive, the innermost sectors which are much smaller than the sectors OS X uses, therefore Windows will always be a bit slower than OS X, and there really isn't anything you can do about it unless you had a SSD.
I don't think you can install 32 bit Windows, even though it may run, it's only going to use half the registers of your 64bit processors.
Windows 7 64 bit runs fine in my virtual machine, I even get over 45 fps on Cube 2 Sauerbraten, but of course it's a rather light 3D game.
If you got the 2.0 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro, that could explain things, it's has a rather weak video card.

  • Macbook pro is slow.....HELP

My 2011 Mac Book pro is slow. i do not have many applications installed except skype, iAntivirus Picasa, Microsoft Office and amazon Mp3. i dont have alot of files i many use my macbook for the internet which is also slow. How can i speed up my computer? also i have downloaded trend micros (wish i never did) but it will not go away it shows up on my start up disk and the little trend  mciro logo is on the top bar on the screen where the time and date are witht he wifi and battery percentage. How cna i get ride of TM ? HELP HELP HELP

The easiest (and often quickest) fix to speeding your MacBook up (even if just by a bit) is cleaning your Desktop up. Make folders, and try to keep your Desktop just as clean as possible.
Uninstall the anti-virus programs as soon as possible. On a Mac, most antivirus programs are kind of redundant, and they really things down.
Update to the latest version of Mountain Lion, though why would you not just get Mavericks? Mavericks has an amazing fix built just to speed Macs up. It's free too!
Finally, go to Utilities --> Activity Monitor to see what programs are slowing your system down the most...

I have my disks that came with my laptop I have went into disk utility to repair disk and I still seem to have the same problem .. No icons or apps or anything lol just the cursor I can only shut down the laptop via power but and the press shut down.
Please help I am going out my mind with this thing :(
    Thanks x jade

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Read about storage drive so you can store your extra stuff.

  • Early 2011 2GHz Macbook pro distorted blue screen then wont boot, 3 times in last 2 weeks

I have an early 2011, 2GHz macbook pro (15' model with ati radeon graphics). It was running fine for the last two years. Over the last couple of weeks, following things happen:
    1. I was running on bootcamp windows, browsing and some flash content was open, suddenly distorted blue stripes appear and it froze. Force shut down using power button, turn on again and it wont boot on windows or mac, or recovery partition or from the dvd. Tried for about 4 hours, after nvram, pram reset, it was able to safe boot, then run disk utility to verify and repair the disk, it said that there were problems with hard drive and fixed, then booted normally.
    2. I thought that the problem might be because I was on windows, so took a back up of the windows drive, erased it and installed windows 8 using bootcamp. It ran well for an week. After that, once I connected it with the tv using HDMI to watch a video, after I disconnected it, the screen was garbled over the windows start screen, but I was able to command restart normally. After restart, it wont boot to windows or mac.
    3. After several hours of trying, i was able to boot using the dvd this time, it said it 'can not install mac on the hard drive', erased the hard drive and it was able to install the os (snow leopard). After completing install, logged in to app store to download previously purchased mountain lion. Then ran it to upgrade the os, after the upgrade was completed, at the point when it prompts for apple id and password to set up icloud, it again froze with distorted blue screen. Shut down forcefully. Then turn on again and it wont boot. After the white screen and the sound, it shows the apple logo and spinning wheel for a while, then a bright white screen and nothing happens.
Can anybody help reading the symptoms?

I have the Early 2011 2GHz Macbook Pro and I have the same problem too.
I switched out the logicboard a month ago and today the graphics just went distorted.
Any solutions? Now I'm thinking it is the Graphics Card.

  • Early 2013 13" MacBook Pro runs slow and uses a lot of RAM, why and what can be done?

    Problem description:
My computer is using a lot of RAM. Wondering if there’s a hardware issue, or a software issue, or something else. I currently have no programs open in the Doc, besides EntreCheck. and the RAM is showing about 75% used. I’m looking for suggestions on what I can do to speed it up and make it more functional, and efficient for doing design work. I recently upgraded from the original 4GB RAM (2x2GB), and from the original HD to a 512 GB SSD drive, and upgraded to Yosemite. Perhaps that was too much for this machine? Please help with anything that I can do to make it better! Thanks in advance!
I have a recent back-up, I'm open to saving user files and starting from scratch with the current hardware, etc... but would need some direction on how to do this. I did upgrade myself using Apple provided instructions.
    Here are the EntreCheck results:

Here's the new EtreCheck that I just ran. At a glance, it seems I may have missed deleting some things or they are stored in an additional location? I haven't jumped into anything yet to really test if there's a difference in performance for me. Once I do I will post that information.

  • Looking for 16GB RAM That is Compatible with Late-2011 17" Macbook Pro

    Hi guys,
I am looking to upgrade the RAM and Hard Drive in my late-2011 17" Macbook Pro. I've already found the hard drive I want to use, but I don't know as much about RAM, and I'm not sure which 16GB (2 x 8GB) kit would be both compatible and give me the best bang for my buck. I am in Canada so any suggestions linking to Canada Computers or NewEgg would be the best! I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    First, goto OWC - https://www.macsales.com/
It has a guide for all things Mac & Memory
Second, get an SSD as it will speed up your computer tremendously.
OWC or Crucial are very good Mac-friendly brands.

  • 2011 17" MacBook Pro freezes for over 5 mins on user password

    Hey everyone,
I installed Yosemite on my 2011 17" MacBook Pro. Since then, after a period of my computer being on or after sleep, it appears that the process that handles login using my user password hangs for a bit and then proceeds to work.
On the login screen, after I enter my password, the focus is drawn off of the password field, and then the computer just sits for what seems to be about 5-7 minutes. This also happens when OS X asks me to enter my password to install / uninstall something; the login window just sits there and does nothing.
It doesn't happen right after a restart, and it seems like it happens more often after the computer goes to sleep and wakes back up, or has just been running for a while.
A couple other possibly related problems is that my system will sometimes just start to slow down and every app will slowly become unresponsive, sometimes to the point where I have to use the power button to do a hard reset. Also I've noticed that my system won't remember that I set my screensaver to "never" but will reset itself to "15 minutes" (which is annoying, because after I come back from the screensaver, my system takes a long time to log back in).
I can't do a system reinstall right now, and I've tried to do PRAM resets and disk repairs. Maybe I'm googling the wrong words, but I've searched and I can't find threads with my exact issue.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?

Hi. My question is pretty much as the heading says :
Is it safe to use an 85watt adapter from a 2006, 17" macbook pro on a late 2011 15" macbook pro?
As far as I can tell from googling and searching around, it does appear that it is safe to do so.
    Specifically this page
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2346
But I just wanted to double-check for confirmation that it is indeed safe to use the adapter from such an old mbook pro in a newer one.
    The wattage is the same.
I wish to do so as I prefer the T-connector, and my older adapter has a much longer extension cord on it.
If not I may order another one from ebay.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
    Thanks for your help.

    Yes.
I recommend you buy one directly from Apple. There are many counterfeit power adapters on the market that could damage your MacBook Pro or potentially cause a fire.
Any idea how to check that an adapter from ebay is a true / legitimate / authentic apple adapter?
Nearly all of them are, even if the seller insists it is "genuine OEM". Legitimate adapters from eBay are likely to be used, not new. There is nothing wrong with used, as long as you know what you're getting.
Identifying a counterfeit is possible only through close examination.

When the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • You can't upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive in the Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. It is not supported. Period.

I tried unsuccesfully to upgrade the hard drive in my Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro to a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive. After several attempts with different hard drives I realized that the kernel panic that showed up was due to the lack of compatibility with the drives to the MacBook Pro. I had a Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro that I did not have any issues with whatsoever. I sold that MacBook Pro and was able to upgrade to the brand new base model without any out of pocket cost. Upon purchase of the new 13" MBP I maxed out the RAM to the full 8GB. After 2 months of freezing, lockups, spinning rainbow wheels and having to force shutdown I tried one last ditch effort to see if a faster drive would help. After speaking with the Apple telephone reps and the Apple Store Genius Bar we discovered that Apple doesn't even offer the option of a 7200RPM drive on their website - a fact that I found quite disturbing. The concensus is that it is a power management issue that causes the incompatibility and the reason the drives are not offered on the 13" models. The problems I had were the end of the line for me. I just switched out that train wreck for the Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro base model. I got home and immediately installed the 750 GB 7200RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black hard drive and it was recognized within seconds. I'm back in business with gleeful abandon.

Sadly... they don't have all the answers. As someone who use to serve in the capacity (Mac Genius) it can definitely be a challenging position. You're "the voice" of Apple's service policy & procedures. Sounds like the person you spoke with got it wrong this time. It's definitely worth a follow up, because like I said, I've got a machine in my household that's living proof of compatibility between a 7200 RPM drive and 13" MBP (Early 2011).
Apple is very good about support documentation when there's incompatibility or unsupported configurations, the fact that there isn't one for 7200 RPM drives would tell me that the people/person you spoke with was misinformed.
I know I always appreciated when a customer made it known to me that I was wrong on something and supplied the right answer. I sure as heck don't have all the answers and if I can lead from my mistakes, well, I won't make them anymore.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro very slow to boot and also everything else?

    Hi,
When I start my computer, it remains at the silver screen with Apple logo forever. The startup boot is supremely slow.
Even while i am opening applications, the icons keep on jumping at the dock for a long time before the application starts.
The problem started about two months ago however it has worsened a lot recently. This is my etrecheck profile. Hope it helps. Any help will be appreciated.
My MacbookPro is very slow. Here's the Etrecheck report.
Let me know what i should do.

Please uninstall "Cisco AnyConnect" and see whether there's an improvement. If there is, check to see whether there's an update, or preferably, use the built-in Cisco client instead.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro extremely slow

    Hi.
My MacBook Pro has recently began to run extremely slow. I have tried several clean up guides from you tube, but so far nothing has helped.
My battery is completely dead, so I only run with the charger connected.
I have done the etreecheck and here are the results:
    Problem description:
My Mac is running extremely slow

Hope someone will be able to help and guide me through a clean up.

nothing seems out of order, apart from the useless Norton Internet Security.
though, since you don't have lots of RAM, consider rebooting the Mac everyso often ( "Time since boot: 7 days 3:2:21").
"  Battery Health: Replace Now": indeed, the battery is dead
Did it start getting slow since Yosemite upgrade? (the new OS does tend to slow things down)
