HELP! Widescreen isn't wide screen!

I am pretty Mac savvy, however, I have never used (because I never had) a DV camera with iMovie. I usually just used iMovie for little 4:3 movies shot on my small digital camera. But now I just recently got the Sony DCR-HC26 and filmed a lot of family videos using the 16:9 ratio on the camera. When I imported the clips into iMovie it had them stretched out while importing, but once they were in iMovie spent a LONG TIME altering them such that they looked like they did on the camera: widescreen. So then I edited and burned a DVD (using iDVD) and popped it in on my widescreen TV only to find that my film that was shot in widescreen mode on the sony camera, edited in iMovie, and exported out to iDVD was shown on a small rectangular box with black panels on the top and bottom, and sides. What happened? I was under the impression it should only have bars on the tops and bottom if it is on a 4:3 TV and if on a 16:9 TV there should be no bars at all.
SO I then tried playing the original DV tape in my camera and using AV outputs directly to the widescreen TV. The results were what I would expect, there were no bars on top, bottom, or sides. Therefore, somewhere along the line there must be an option, or process of either iMovie or iDVD that alters the widescreen into, well, widescreen but with bars on all sides... Is there an option I am missing? What went wrong, what happened?
Thank you, please help,
TM

There might be others on the forum that might know more about this than I do but to my knowledge once you create a DV project in iMovie and set the aspect ratio to 4:3 (normal DV project) you can not switch it to DV-Widescreen which is 16:9.
Unfortunately you can not change how the video is flagged in iMovie to anamorphic once you import it into iMovie. Does your camcorder have a setting on it for shooting in anamorphic widescreen? Or is this a lens that you use on your camcorder to get widescreen?
I know the couple of times I have played with Final Cut Pro I was able to open a video clip and change the setting on the video clip to anamorphic or not anamorphic and I could then take that video into iMovie 6 in a widescreen project and work with the video in the new project.

  • Wide screen aspect ratio help

hi everyone im new in final cut pro, and i need some guidance, help or tutorial on how to achieve the widescreen aspect ratio to give the video more like a film look and feel, i need to know how to do this without distorting the video or cropping or making it look stretchy it if its possible. A tutorial would be awesome please if someone can help me, i would really appreciate this i looked around for this but i cant really find anything (i might have been looking in the wrong places :[ ) thanks

im not sure this are the dimensions 1280 × 720 i think (im not too sure) it was wide screen. for example if i used my iphone for in landscape mode i think it comes out wide screen right? so then how would i do it not sure what really but is there any chance that without it having to be shoot wide screen make it wide screen without it looking bad ??

  • High Quality Wide Screen for YouTube - PLEASE HELP!

I am using a Panasonic PV-GS400 camera in wide-screen mode (this is another topic, but the camera still outputs 720 x 480 video, my understanding is that it is called "anamorphic wide screen"). I had figured out some settings to get my videos to appear in "High Quality" mode, wide screen (16:9) in YouTube, but the last couple of times I have tried these settings, they didn't work. Here's what I used:
    - Windows Media 856 x 480 frame size
    - Frame rate 29.97kbps
    - Pixel aspect ratio - square (1.0)
    - 2 encoding passes
I got the 856 x 480 ratio from another website. I don't really understand why the pixel aspect ratio needs to be square, but when I tried 16:9 aspect ratio, the video is letterboxed. I also don't understand the two different project modes for PE7 (when creating a new project you can choose the format 4:3 or 16:9). Maybe someone can explain how the widescreen project setting works. Perhaps it is something similar to how my camera does widescreen but the videos are still 720 x 480.
At any rate, if someone has settings that will reliably produce wide screen videos that appear in YouTube's "high quality" mode, I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

As we often say on this forum, the biggest challenge with working with YouTube is that, as soon as someone figures it out, YouTube changes the rules again.

  • Wide screen help?! im stuck

    Hi,
Can anyone offer some advice? I have been working on my
animation project in flash to the ratio of 550px over 400px and
have only just realized it has to be wide screen format of 1024 px
over 768 px and now i don't know what to do? will i have to start
all over again and stretch out every key? I have tried to see what
it looks like with one key and it looks stretched and wrong?! what
is the purpose of using wide screen and do you think it would be
better if i just kept it at 550px over 400px? its for a university
    presentation.
    Thankyou for your time,
    Lauren

I dunno, seems like you should be able to scale up the SWF to
about 190% and that would be very close to filling the screen. Use
the Publish settings to set the scale size, scale both aspects
    identically to retain your proportions.

  • Change  of ratio from 4 x 3  to 16 x 9  wide screen..

Change  of ratio from 4 x 3  to 16 x 9  wide screen.. in FCX pro
Can anybody please help me, who has prior knowledge of changing the ratio from 4 x 3 to 16.9 widescreen that I have already imported.. I have tried everything in the preferences.. Before I imported it, and after, however it is not working. It’s been imported from a FlashCARD… Thank you in anticipation

Hello once again Tom, sorry for the inconvenience, I'm quite new to this Final Cut Pro as you can tell. However here is information you requested I hope I got it right for you.
I will do my best to explain as I go on. I'm using a Canon XL2 broadcast camera which is capable of shooting in 9 x 6 and 4 x 3. It is a DV tape camera and additional to that I have on the back a datavideo (DN 60) flash card recorder. I do believe that the flash card recorder records in 16 x 9, so I am told by the distributors. I'm also told by the same distributors that for some reason Final Cut Pro X does not recognise the 16 x 9 flag, however Adobe, Sony Vegas etc they do recognise it and allow you to change the ratio size in their software. When I use the tape from the camera it exports into Final Cut Pro X as 16 x 9, so I will thought that the flash card recorder would record in the same format.
I can tell by the size of the clip in the viewfinder that it is not 16 x 9 when I import it in, I also make a quick 10 second movie and set that as my master file, no matter what I use to import it in the preferences it still won't stretch to widescreen, or in fact anything else I do as I send it to a master file, anything else than this I am at a loss, not sure what to do. I hope the picture of the move inspector is what you require also including the picture to let you see the size in reference.

  • Widescreen or fit to screen choice...

    HI!
I saw this option in different movie dvd menu and I want to know how to do this...
I want to know how we can put a choice to the viewer to choose between: play it widescreen or fit to screen 4:3... is it a script who tell how play the track..? it probably doesn't have the same track duplicate on the disk with each a display setting different?....
Because I know how to set my track and menu for the appropriate display on TV's like I want...but if we give viewer choice....now i'm lost!!! Because I doesn't see nothing in DVDSP that I can link my 2 buttons (play wide or play 4:3 in this case) to the same track with different display setting.
Hope you understand & can help me on this!
    thx!

The thing everyone is...that I perfectly understand all about the 16/9 : 4:3 Letterbox : 4:3 pan scan setting TO DO during my programation of the DVD in DVDSP for the result I want to be displayed on my TV....
My question was more that I saw in a ''hollywood'' dvd : Run from Dick & Jane (Jim Carrey & Thea Léoni) that the user can choose between LETTERBOXED or FULL SCREEN display before start the movie....
So...is a way to create this option in DVDSP, without created 2 different track (one 4:3 letterbox check and the other pan scan) with the same movie in it...
Because that way double the space use on the disc....exept if there's a way to script it or edit it in DVDSP....
Sorry for my french/english taping spelling!!!!

  • Converting back to wide screen after burning to DVD

    Hi all,
Looks like I burned my iDVD project to standard 4.3 and not widescreen mode. I can't see my title menu on my TV when viewing (I used Road trip theme). I deleted my original imovie too soon before I checked it. Is there a way to make a wide screen version of my finished iDVD project?
    Thanks
    web dude

You mean other than starting over in iMovie? Yes there is. It may sound complicated but it isn't really!
First go to http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?lang=english and download myDVDedit. This is shareware although the download is free. Send the guy a few dollars/euros, he deserves it. While you are there, read all about it. Now install it in your Applications Folder. You will need it later.
Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but this aids identification.
Double-click on the DVD icon to open a folder containing the AUDIO_TS files and VIDEO_TS files. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on ‘Apply to enclosed items’. You will be asked for your root password. Close the get info window, and now click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click te middle one (VTS or VMG).
In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2 (if it isn’t already)
Set Standard to PAL (or NTSC if that is what you want)
Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
    Now save the file.
Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
Click on VTS Menu 2 and repeat as above.
You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!
If you have Roxio Toast, open it. ‘Select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS’. Choose Select from the main Toast window and select your projectname-TS Files folder. You are now ready to burn! You can set the burn speed (2x recommended) before the burn commences. Allow Toast to verify the burn before you eject the DVD-R disk.
If you don’t have Toast, then I assume you can burn the projectname-TS Files folder (disk image) via Disk Utility. I say ‘assume’ only because I have never tried it that way.
Either way, you now have a DVD which will play as 16:9 widescreen on any TV set, even the old ones where you can’t ask it to letter-box.

  • Capturing in wide screen

I am using a Canon HV 10 camcorder, recording in widescreen, but not HD (changed camera settings as HD took up too much hard disk space). When "trying" to capture video I have several problems: 1) It often has trouble "finding" the camera. (I have read the related posts.) 2) I am able to capture, it appears to be widescreen in the capture window, the settings are for widescreen, but after I finish capturing the clip, the video is no longer in wide screen, but has reverted to 4:3 and everything looks "squished". It is frustrating. I have a feeling I am missing something fairly simple---at least I hope so. Please help. Thank you!
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

go to the FCP menu and choose Easy Setup. then in that window first check the "Show All" checkbox to the right of the popup, then from the popup itself choose "DV-NTSC Anamorphic"
now, any new video you capture, and any new sequence you creat, should have the correct setting,
for the existing clips you have already captured, and sequences you have created:
If it's not already in List View, set your Browser window to display as a list by choosing View menu > Browser Items > as List, the scroll the browser window to the right until you see the column headed "Anamorphic".
You can put a tick in that column by just clicking in it. Do it for each clip and sequence that is widescreen but does not have yet have a tick in that column
    hope it helps

  • Wide Screen

I captured my footage on a Dv camera on wide screen. So it has the nice black bars top
and bottom when you watch it back.
I have imported them as seperate clips and when you view those clips on Source/Preview panel they still have the widescreen bars framing the moving image.
I have then dragged them onto the timeline to make my movie cut, but when I export the whole project to watch back as one file the widescreen setup is lost and it is just a rectangle set film? Help??

Ally, you have a DV project, so no need for a 1080 Project (designed for high def cameras). I'd be tempted to re-capture in Premiere, as we have no idea how you're getting those clips out of i-Movie (are you "exporting them as Quicktime", or are you dragging and dropping the files straight from the hard drive?).
The specs for your camera (on Amazon at least) says it records in "true" widescreen, which means the Project you want to work in is DV NTSC (or PAL, depending on your country/camera) WIDESCREEN. If all goes well, you SHOULDN'T have black bars top and bottom (as that simply means a whole stack of pixels are just wasted lying around in "black" mode: bad).
So you really need to get all your ducks in row here by:
    - making sure your captured clips are in their native format (Type II DV AVI. Harm, correct me if I'm wrong there) preferably by capturing in Premiere
    - making sure the project you're working in matches your clips (DV Widescreen)
    - making sure you're exporting the type of file you need at the end (and I don't know what that is)
Alas, this part of the Premiere learning curve is STEEP.
    Good luck.

  • How to get a WIDE screen view in Laptop...

I am using Sun Solaris 10 for x86 on Virtual Machine. But i am unable to get a wide screen view. I have a 15.4" screen laptop.
Do i need to change any setting in my Vitual Box????
Presently, i am getting a view having Aspect ration 1:1. i am looking for 16:9 aspect ration screen.

    Hey,
Wide screen view for Solaris on virtual machine? I use the newest [virtualbox for windows|http://www.softsea.com/review/VirtualBox-for-Windows.html] version, what if you use vboxmanage setextradata resolution x*y? Look in the manual for the correct syntax. It might actually work. you can also try to force it in xorg.conf.
    Hope this tip can help.

  • No wide screen resolution option

i just connected my imac to a external display(HD TV) useing a vga cable. the only problem i have is that the resolution wont go high enough to tvs native resolution and ratio. i need a wide screen ratio but the only option i get in the dispay settings is 3:4
i do not want to pay for a fix.

VGA does not support widescreen and is limited to 640 x 480 resolution.

  • Sick of wide-screens!

I'm a graphic artist. I need a big screen to see what I'm doing. Ever since Mac started making wide-screens, the screens are wider, but the height is too small! So in order to get the right viewing size for that I'm doing with wide-screen I need to buy a laptop or computer with a HUGE SCREEN. Also I have a full-screen wacom tablet. I don't have 360$ more to buy ANOTHER ONE in full-screen!
I wish you guys would fix this and make them in BOTH SIZES! So we have a choice! Yes wide-screen is good for movies and crap but the new MacBook is useless for detailed graphic design unless you buy an external monitor at 17-20+ inches. But the problem there is you can't take it everywhere with you! Allot of artists travel allot and this doesn't help. Not all of us are rich enough to set up home offices and crap. And if you're on the go all the time you CAN'T!
So in short- PLEASE GET THE NORMAL FULL-SCREEN SIZES BACK!!!!!!!!!!!! This IS NOT fair!
13-inches of WIDE-SCREEN is like buying a tiny portable DVD player, NOT A COMPUTER!
    Thank you.

The res has more height but the actual screen size makes it look smaller. Kinda like having a 12 inch screen set on 1024x768 looks allot smaller so it all fits, vs a 14 inch screen with the same res it looks bigger cause the screens bigger.
When you're doing detailed work it's nice to see what you're doing. Zooming in only works sometimes but if you need to see a large area, having a small screen wouldn't be very helpful. You'd still see the same amount of area but it's smaller. Ya know? Like looking at it from far away.
Neh I just had a moment. I wish this stupid thing had an edit posts. I'd make it less angry. I just don't see why they made it a 13 inch instead of a 15 inch. Hopefully they'll work something out.
It's just bad when you're broke and starting out and trying to get higher up and everything is so much money for anything decent. Then when you get what you need for one thing they change it and you have to update.

  • Poor Quality in Wide-Screen When Exporting HD to Quicktime

    Hello all...
I'm working on a fairly large project in iMovie HD with wide-screen footage from my Sony HDR-HC3 and have hit a wall.
I can't seem to get a good result when I export clips into Quicktime in a wide-screen format. They are a bit choppy & you can see bits of some horizontal lines. The same video exported in full-screen VGA looks great. Any tips...? I basically just want to make good quality QT movies watchable on my computer that maintain the original aspect ratio (and LOOK like they do in iMovie!)
The entire project is around 100GB and I currently have almost 40GB of free space. Any help appreciated!

  • Why can't I get wide screen when burning a dvd?

My sequence is all 1920x 1080 HD footage in mpeg2. My photos are all 1920 x1080 px. In encore if I want to burn a standard DVD it automatically goes to 720x480 if I choose " mpeg2dvd" format. Why isn't there a wide screen mpeg2 dvd format?

Colin, what you show is the  dialog box when I do file> export media, right? Except mine is different (Pr 5.5 iss different?) and has a check box for "match source attributes" and when that is checked the format box is grayed out.  And I don't see where you can customize anything.
What's the purpose of File>export media if it doesn't create a dvd?
If i do File> dyn link> send to encore there is no dialog box like you showed. it doesn't give any choices except dvd or blu ray and no "wide screen".
Are you all saying that 720x480 is all you get on a dvd and if your source is 16x9 it will squish it to fit? aren't hollywood dvd's in 16x9?
