Help, will not play hdv file?

I have a movie I shot and edited when I was at university using Final cut pro and HDV cams.
I need to show this movie on my macbook pro, but I purchased final cut express, and have just found out my Quicktime does not play this file.. the screen is just black?
I assume I need a HDV 1080i50 codec for quicktime??? is this correct?
Where can I get it?
I intend to give a presentation was going to use OpenOffice or use my Quicktime just for moving image
Any suggestions?
Regards

Without FCP installed, you need a decoder. Calibrated has you covered:

    You can also use VLC

It woks very well, can read almost anything, and also lets you do conversions to other formats.

  • DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files from my hard drive

When logged into my home account DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files that are on my hard drive. I get an error message: "there was a problem opening the media. Media type is not supported." When logged in as "root" DVD player does play these same files. Also, when logged in to my home account, I can play these same files in VLC.

But the gist of the fix is to delete or rename "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" and let the DVD Player build a new one. It seems that this is caused by a migrated PPC preference that borks DVD Player 5 on Intel Macs, which is what just happened to me. Hope this helps.

  • Itunes 6.0.5 will not play ANY files

Hi. I just upgraded to version 6.0.5 and itunes will not play any of the files in my library. No error message or file location error is diplayed when I try to play a file. The song title is displyed in the main window, but the file does not progress.
I tried to troubleshoot it myself with apple support, but only found some information about checking the compatilibity mode settings --that was not the problem.
Anyone else experience this? I'd really appreciate any suggestions or information on how I can solve this problem. Thanks a bunch!

is the little diamond-shaped thingy staying firmly stuck to the left, raisingirl?
if so, let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1 reinstall.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes play music properly again?
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

  • Itunes on W8 will not play any files after upgrade to 11.0.4.4

After following the prompt and updating Itunes on Windows 8 to version 11.0.4.4 on 6 June, Itunes no longer plays any audio or video files from my library. Pick a file and Itunes shows that it is playing (Pause button only) however nothing happens. The file simply does not play.  Windows Media Player will not open any files. VLC will play flash video files but with no sound.  Video played in IE10 seems to play ok including sound.   Anyone have any suggestions.  I can uninstall but figure I'll get teh same version when I re-install.   Everything worked fine prior to installing this upgrade.

Resolved by running W8 System Restore to a point prior to the last Itunes update. Now back on the previous version of Itunes. Windows Media Player working correctly with all file types. Itunes working correctly also.  I'm quite happy not to re-apply any updates from Apple for a while.

  • Muse site will not play mp3 files on iOS devices

I'm testing my new/first site using Muse CC 2014 and finding that audio files (MP3) will not play on iOS 7.x devices.I am using the MP3 Player plug-in from Musethemes.com. They have yet to respond to my support request 3 days ago so I am hoping someone here might have encountered the same issue. What alternatives would you suggest?

Never mind everyone. Musethemes got back to me. The issue is the link for each MP3 file points to assets/filename.mp3 in the desktop version but since the tablet and phone versions have their own sub-directories the link needs to properly point to the parent directory where the assets folder is located i.e. ../assets/filename.mp3. On to the next adventure.

  • Will not play WMA files, please help.....

I have the latest version of flip 4 mac and the Quicktime 7.4.1. Why can't any of these programs play WMA files?

What is the codec of the WMA?
    From Wikipedia:
Microsoft currently endorses the third-party Flip4Mac WMA, a QuickTime component which allows Macintosh users to play WMA files in any player that uses the QuickTime framework.[49] Flip4Mac however does not currently support the Windows Media Audio Voice codec.

  • DVD Player will not play image files (Snow Leopard 10.6.2)

I am having a problem with my DVD Player. It will no longer play dvd iso files. Instead I get this error: "There was a problem opening the media: The media type is not supported"
What is really strange about this is that the audio from the DVD would play just fine, but there would not be an accompanying video window.
I find it hard to believe that when upgrading from leopard to snow leopard that the iso file format would become unsupported.
I have also tried to create my own DVD .img file and it too would not play in DVD Player giving me the same error message. Is there anything I can do to get my image files to play on this computer?

Change the file extension from img. to iso
Many obscure file formats are not accepted by DVD Players and require you to either change the format or get a converter. here read these they will help you a ton.

  • Re: Itunes will not play OGG files.

I am not being combative. I asked a simple question and got a stuck up answer. The I should have got back is apple does not feel like making Itunes play OGG files. It is more of a management descion then anything else.

    Hi Mac Dudes,
I am not running Mac, but have the same problem. I have managed to get my music back by doing the following, hope this helps someone else (from my post in the windows section):
To cut a long story short...
Installed iTunes 7 over my existing 6.0.5 setup. Disaster.
No audio, Audio card now seemed to have been disabled by iTunes 7 install (SoundBlaster Audigy).
Rebooted and sound back but all audio played from iTunes 7 was distorted and impossible to listen to. Audio from Windows Media Player was fine.
Uninstalled Quicktime and iTunes 7. Downloaded iTunes 6.0.5 from Apple.
    (Windows) http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605forwindows.html
    or
    (Macintosh) http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605.html
On launching iTunes 6.0.5 I received the following error: Cannot read iTunes Library.itl as created by newer version of iTunes (or something to that effect).
Opened up my iTunes folder which I have on a separate partition and located the folder "Previous iTunes Libraries". I backed up the present .itl file into this folder (called it iTunes 7 fookup for reference) and then copied the latest .itl backup (which was iTunes Library 2006-09-13, yours may have a different date), back into the iTunes folder and renamed it to "iTunes Library.itl"
Launched iTunes 6.0.5 and my old version of iTunes is now back to its former glory and my music (thank god) is now playing as before.
<Rant Alert>Thanks for nothing Apple, that's 5 hours of my life I will never get back. As for iTunes 7, you can stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

  • Quicktime will not play .mov files since Lion installation

When using Quicktime 10.6, I am receiving the error message "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." when attempting to open .mov files.  Prior to installing OS X Lion, there were no issues with playing .mov files.

I'm having the same problem. Using a clean install of Mac OS X (10.7) Lion and QuickTime 10.1.
    If I go to finder:
I can click on Icon's Play arrow and the Movie will play in the icon.
I can click on the file icon and press the spacebar and the file will play in QuickLook.
If I doubleclick on the icon to open the file in QuickTime, I get the "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." message.
If I right click on the icon and click open with... QuickTime, I get the "...file could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." message.

  • Safari 6.0.1 will not play QuickTime Files

I am having problems with Safari 6.0.1 playing back QuickTime Files. I reset safari and cookies and it will still not play QuickTime movies. To the best of my knowledge, QuickTime is working with all other components of the computer.
Is there a way to redownload Safari or repair it...
I could not find a place on Apple's webpage to redownload it.
I am using Mac OS 10.7.5 on a MacPro (2008).
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
    -M

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extension tab.
If there are any installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari.
There are several extensions such as DivX that can prevent QT content from streaming.

  • Is apple aware that Lion will not play HDV 720p25 Files in QT, poor show., Is apple aware that Lion will not play HDV 720p25 Files in QT, poor show.

I recently made the change to Lion from Snow Leopard, I use FCP and work natively with HDV 720p25 .mov files from a Focus DR-HD100 hard drive. I am getting a message saying that the files may be damaged, I want to know when this will be sorted, as I am completely unable to edit and its costing me big time.
My hands are tied, when will apple sort this, a very poor showing from Apple, not impressed. This has knocked my confidence in Apple.

i've been having the exact same problems myself since Lion was released.  I've been having to work with .m2t files and then converting them with MPEG StreamClip to Apple ProRes 422 native quicktime files in order to even use the stupid HDD.  All of my existing .MOV files that were on the HDD prior to upgrade are now all "corrupt". Spoke with Apple reps and Focus reps and both of course are pointing fingers at each other.
Also, found that .m2t files aren't as high quality as shooting with .mov files on the DR-HD100... interesting huh?  I mean i'm not in too much of a pickle due to the fact that the HDD is still useable it's just more time and steps before getting to edit in FCP now which is annoying considering the fact that I shelled out a lot of money for this HDD to be able to edit immediately...
    APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS!!!!
I know it's Apple's fault because when i shoot in .mov files on the DR-HD100 and bring them in on my mac mini which is still OS X Snow Leopard, they work just fine... so it's definitely a Lion issue...
Also, found out that once the files have been dragged onto a HDD operating within OS X Lion, they become corrupt FOREVER and you can't reverse the process!  They remain fine on the DR-HD100 but if you drag them onto a OS X Lion machine, then decide to transfer them to a OS X Snow Leopard device via USB, Network, or whatever, it won't matter because they have already been corrupted by Lion!

  • Quick Look will not play MPEG files

I know this is possible because before I bought a new hard-drive it worked. I deleted the preferences file and restarted my computer to no avail.
    Any other ideas?
    Perian and Flip4Mac are installed.

If the files are MPEG-2 then you'll need additional software to view them in QuickTime Player.
    Perian doesn't open MPEG-2 nor does Flip4Mac.

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.
