Help! Win 8.1 Bootcamp partition vanished

Hi all
My Windows 8.1 Bootcamp partition has vanished.
Last night I was playing a Windows game, all was well and I shutdown the machine at the end of the night.  This morning I got up, powered up the Mac Pro and noticed it was stuck in an OSX reboot cycle.  I held the alt key down and the 3 boot partitions popped up OSX, Recovery, Windows 8.  I selected Recovery and ran the Disk Utility,  "Check" disk tool.  It reported that the EFI was bad so I clicked on Repair.  It then said it couldn't repair it.  I rebooted again and this time there are now only two options, OSX and Recovery.  I clicked OSX which loaded fine.  I have no idea how this happened when the machine was off over night and fine the night before in both Windows and OSX.
So now I have no way to boot into Windows on my new Mac Pro 2014 machine.
Bootcamp is on the internal SSD along with OSX
I have never resized the partitions
I have not installed anything new in the last few weeks
I do not visit dodgy websites and run Malware bytes anti malware regularly (never found an issue to date)
Last night I added a secondary HDMI monitor
The day before yesterday I unplugged everything and rearranged my office
I uninstalled Parallels Desktop Trial (expired) 1 week ago from both Windows and OSX
I have backed up the Bootcamp partition to an external drive using Disk Utility
I CAN browse the bootcamp partition using finder and the folders and files are all visible.
New Mac Pro. 512GB SSD, OSX 10.9.3, 16GB Ram, Thunderbolt Display, HDMI Dell Display
Any help would be much appreciated as some of my key work software is on the BOOTCAMP windows install.

There is overcharging protection in the battery and the adapter, both. This can also be seen on OS X side under System Report -> Power. If you adapter is plugged in and the battery is charged, it will say 'Not charging' despite the fact that the power adapter is connected.

  • Wired Apple Keyboard not recognized in Win 7 64x bootcamp partition

I installed a bootcamp partition on an iMac late 2012 i5 running 10.8.3 following the Bootcamp instructions.  Windows 7 64x installed fine.  My wireless Apple keyboard and magic mouse work fine.  However, when I plug in my previous Apple wired keyboard from my 2008 iMac, Windows doesn't recognize it, keyboard doesn't work, and the USB ports on the keyboard don't work.  Called Apple support and they said to call Microsoft.  MS said they didn't have an answer.  Anyone else have this issue and any success resolving it?  Would really prefer to use the wired keyboard for gaming and the numeric keypad.

Sorry - also meant to say that I had Win 7 x32 installed in a bootcamp partition on my previous 2008 C2D iMac and the wired keyboard worked fine.

  • Win 7 on bootcamp partition, very slow internet speed

    hi!
it might be an answer to my problem somewhere on this forum, but
right now i do not have the time to browse through - so ill just post my problem quick and simple.
im running windows 7 ultimate on a intel imac, via bootcamp. the issue is simple, yet pretty annoying.
in iOS, my internet speed is great, as it should be (my bandwidth is 12/12 mbit).
but in windows 7, for some reason (been like this ever since install) things are going SO slow.
i mean, watching videos on youtube is a nightmare, every 3 second at lowest quality possible, it still
has to buffer. same goes for other streaming sites/services. downloading usually does not exceed 300 kb/ps, but in
ios this could easily hit 1,5 mb/ps.
if i listen to music on say grooveshark (adjusted to lowest quality) the music stops to buffer if i load a different webpage. its that bad.
ive taken a bandwidth check in windows and in iOS, and in iOS the speed is normal, in windows its 1/10th of what it should be.
anyone know why this problem persists?
as i know of, windows 7 doesnt have any bandwidth limiting of default.
so i thought it might be a windows 7/imac hardware conflict. help?

Hi, I'm having the same problem.
    I installed win8.1(64bit) on a iMac7,1 20inch(mid 2007) using Winclone.
Everything was working fine after I downloaded some driverhelper and installed those drivers.
Yet the internet on Win8.1 is very slow, the download speed is merely 60-100kb/s .
While if I open the Mac system, the same resource can easily to beyong 2MB/s.
As I have 25Mb/10Mb connection at home.
I'm new here , don't know exactly what driver I need to fix this problem.
    Try to install boot camp.
However, I tried 5.0 / 4.0 , it all said bootcamp x64 is not supported on this computer model.
Don't know where i can download the bootcampe 3.0 to have a try ?
Or is it just too old iMac to be fixed?

  • Help! My Mac OS Partition Vanished!

I turned on my Macbook this morning and a little folder with a question mark appeared in the middle of the screen instead of the apple logo, so it ran Windows XP instead.
Now when I turn it on and hold "option" the only partition is the Windows one.
My Mac OS was working fine last night when I turned off the cpu, and now it's not even there!
Can someone please help me get back my Mac OS?!

The "?" means that no valid system can be found. As Doug has pointed out this could be due to disk directory damage and may be fixed by repairing the hard drive. More likely is a corrupted file which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. The only recovery is to restore your system from your backups (you do maintain backups, right?) or do an Archive and Install.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Bootcamp partition issue after Yosemite upgrade

I've installed bootcamp on my mac.  Later on I needed more space on my bootcamp partition and used some method to shrink the mac partition and increase the bootcamp partition.  This method worked fine until I did a Yosemite upgrade today.  Now I see that my bootcamp partition is gone and has reverted to it's original size.  Below is a screenshot of disk utility and outputs of the commands wanted.  I need help in recovering my bootcamp partition.  Thank you very much.

  • Can I resize my existing Bootcamp partition (leaving XP Pro behind) while doing a clean Win 7 install?

I currently have a Bootcamp partition (30 Gb or so) running XP pro.  I want to switch to Win 7, which I understand requires a clean install since there is no upgrade path from XP directly to Win7.  While doing so I want to increase the size of my BC partition.  (I'm offloading iTunes and iPhoto to external drives and freeing up 60+ Gb so I can make a bigger partition)
Do I just run Bootcamp Assistant and do the deed as if I were starting from scratch, but specify a larger partition?
The full scenario is that I have an HP laptop running Win7, and XP pro in Bootcamp.  I want to swap them.  Any advice on the process?  Activate/Deactivate/Reactivate dance.  I realize this is a Windows question, but someone may have done this before.
    Thanks for any help.

contrary to kappy, you can buy and use CampTune to resize.
you can't use a HP install on Mac.
you need a retail Win7 to activate on a different motherboard.
Start from scratch. Anything else is likely to have problems.

  • Help-Erasing a Boot Camp Partition Caused 32 GB of Disk Space to Vanish

    Hi
I'm a new mac user I'd I have been really happy so far, expect for this problem:
-I created a 32 gb partition with boot camp.
-I tried installing windows xp without knowing I had to format the system to NTFS during the install
The installation didnt work, and I erased the bootcamp partition.
-When I tried to create a new boot camp partition, it said my Mac HD size hard drive is 227 gb, ie the *32 gb allocated to the partition had vanished*. In addition, I could not recreate a partition because of an error message.
-I ran the snow leopard CD's disk utility and thought that I had fixed the problem.
-However in boot camp, the mac drive is still only 227 gb (missing 32 gb). I can create partitions now, and deleting these partitions does cause any additional loss of disk space.
-I tried erasing empty disk space with no luck.
Does anyone know how to recover space lost by Boot Camp?
    Thanks

Let me ask a simple question. What size HD do you have in your Mac? You say you see 227 GB and that 32GB is "missing". If I add those two numbers up I com up with 259 GB. I suspect that your "missing" space is due to the inconsistencies in which Snow Leopard now reports 1 GB. In some places it reports 1 GB as a hard disk manufacturer (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). In other places it reports 1 GB as a binary number (1 GB = 2^^30 [IIRC] = 1,073,741,824 Bytes). Since I do not know of any drive manufacturer that sells a 259 GB drive, I suspect that this is just due to the differing definitions of 1 GB.

  • I have recently installed windows XP on my bootcamp partition. I am in need for the drivers and what not so that it will run effectivly and the bootcamp assistant canot find the "Windows Support Sofware" Can anyone help me find it manually?

As the title has stated, I have recently installed Windows XP on my Bootcamp Partition. I am in need of the "Windows Support Software". I am assumeing that is the information that has the Drivers and what not that allow me o properly use my Mac with windows. If anyone can help me locate this inforamtion i would be greatly.... Greatfull.
P.S. The bootcamp assistant is telling me that the Windows Support Sofware canot be found.

You both would have had correct awnsers, but i have a Macbook that is close to three years old. And i can't seem to find my Disc. The only reason i haven't ordered a new one in case of emergencies is I plan on upgrading to the new OS in less then a month.
I think the following may help me (In case anyone els is looking):

  • 2 bootcamp partitions with the same win 7 software?

    I'm running Lion 10.7.2 on a Mac Pro 4,1 (early 2009).
So my bootcamp partition with Windows 7 works fine, but I am running out of disk space. I'd like to move it to a dedicated drive that's already installed. I tried to image the partition with Winclone, but I was not able to restore the image to this other drive with Winclone (latest version that is supposed to be compatible with Lion, ver 2.3.2?).
It seems, I need to start over and reinstall bootcamp/win 7 onto my other drive. But, I don't want to simply erase my original bootcamp partion before I do that. Will I be able to use bootcamp assistant to install the same Windows 7 software onto a new bootcamp drive, while still keeping the original bootcamp/win 7 partition?
    thanks

{{Still, it's too bad I still have to nuke my working bootcamp partition??before I do any of this. Maybe if I unmount the partition is disk utility?}} You have to make image before nuke.
A windows image backup is not bootable, it is a very long string of data = to your C: drive GBs.
After doing image from within Windows 7 to Internal "Work" disk, in Windows 7 Bootcamp control panel, change startup to OSX.  You reboot into OSX & I thought you could run bootcamp against existing Windows 7 reducing it to 0. Reboot to OSX & do bootcamp space allocation setup to "New" disk, then Bootcamp would ask for Windows CD/DVD; rebooting with F8 where Windows Recovery/Restore/Advanced WhatchaMaCallit image from Work could be restored to "New" bootcamped disk exactly as it was before you zeroed it.
You want to press F8 because it will otherwise go into Windows install where I can't remember but do not think it will let you do image restore.
I expect even if you have problems after allocating new, you can boot with Option key selecting Windows 7 CD/DVD and F8.
This would not take long on internal drives.

  • Bootcamp Partition has Disappeared, need help.

Alright, I'm out of my league here and I need some help. I've been using bootcamp for quite some time now, and I wanted to increase the partition size (**** steam sales).
I don't remember the exact steps I took, but I'll try my best. I decreased the Mac partition in disk utility. While I was doing this, I noticed that there was no "BOOTAMP" partition on the left side, instead there was a "disk0s4". I then rebooted into windows (refit) to find a black screen that gave me an error, saying Missing bootable device, press any key to continue. I restarted, and did the refit table sync thing. It synced the tables, so I rebooted again into windows. I now get a Missing Operating Systems error. I restarted again and went into disk utility, and tried to verify and repair disk0s4, but I got an error for both saying "Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: f682fc". When I went into Startup disk, the bootcap partition doesn't show up. When I restart and hold the option key, the Windows partition shows up but doesn't load into. I backed up the mac partition with Time Machine, but is there anyway I can back up my now non-existent bootcamp partition? Or is it just long gone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you need more information or pictures just tell me and I will try my best.
Also, the disk0s4 partition is smaller than what it used to be. It may be what I originally had it as before I enlarged the partition.

As you have found out (the hard way) you can't resize a Boot Camp partition safely (one exception, CampTune can)
Backing up your Windows installation may be possible using WinClone, or you could try to image the entire drive using Disk Utility.
You are likely to have to erase the entire drive and reinstall though.
There is a very knowledgable poster on this site, Christopher Murphy. Look for one of his threads and post a request in it for his help, you may be able to get out of this without reinstalling anything with his help.

  • Can't remove my ex bootcamp partition...need help

hey....i installed windows 8.1 through bootcamp, then after few days i tried to remove bootcamp partition through bootcamp assistant, but failed during the process.
Then I used disk utility to remove the partition. It did erased the partition but turned the partition into a grey box, named as free space and with a format of free space.
now i cant do anything with that box, i tried to highlight that box and clicked on the minus button but that also greyed out. After highlighting the grey partition, when i click on the + button, it tends to create another partition named as untitled 2, but when i clicked apply, nothing happened. and i cant see the hard drive model number in top left of disk utility..
i'm posting the screen shots....plz help..!!!

1.I tried to click on it but no respond
2.tried to call from html form while using server JSDK 2.1 :
    <FORM ACTION= "http://localhost:8080/servlet/AccessCounts.jsp" >
but I'm getting Error: 404 "No detailed message"
Can I open jsp file like simple html file ? Or must I locate it special folder of server while it runs ?

  • Windows 8 woes on bootcamp/partitioning/help please!

So, I ordered a copy of windows 8 OEM edition 64bit. I'm on a late 2012 macbook pro 13 inch with mac os x 10 mountain lion.
I recieved it, started up bootcamp did as it said and then when i came to installing windows the partitioned hard drive I'd created (100gb) for windows wasn't useable. Windows 8 said "can't use *bootcamp partition I forget the exact name/perhaps partition 4*. Windows gave me the option to format the drive. So i did. And the drive was then obviously no longer boot camp and has turned into a standard NTFS drive (I'm not that clued up on this go easy on the terminology for me!). In short, I then continued to install windows 8 on a none bootcamp partition.
This installation doesn't have the drivers needed (probably from bootcamp) for use of the macbooks dvd drive or the volume/media/keyboard light buttons it doesn't recognise the wifi card or anything..
So i guess I need to know these things:
    1) how do I uninstall windows 8 from that partition and then restore that partition to recreate the whole, original volume? Is there a way of uninstalling windows that means I can use it again (i.e. I don't want to be paying another £60 for the privilage of a new license)
    2) how do I do the PROPER bootcamp installation? and what happens if I hit that bit where windows 8 doesn't like the bootcamp partition i created?(i know not to format the hard drive now!)
Thanks for any help guys, much appreciated!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, Boot Camp isn't compatible with Windows 8 because Apple hasn't released Boot Camp drivers for it, so do it at your own risk. If you don't want to break the Mac, install Windows 7.

If you didn't erase OS X, press X key while your Mac is starting to start into OS X, open Boot Camp Assistant and follow the steps to erase the Boot Camp volume.

Open Boot Camp Assistant and follow the steps to install Windows. When you are on the partitioning screen, format only the BOOTCAMP volume and install Windows on it.
Boot Camp Assistant will ask you to download the drivers, but now they are useless for Windows 8

  • I installed win 8.1 on my iMac on the bootcamp partition and can't access OSX anymore. What am I doing wrong?

Ever since I installed Windows I don't have an option to switch to Mac.I installed it on the bootcamp partition with the lastest OSX and Windows versions. I did this a few years ago with an older Mac and Vista and remembered a prompt to choose OS during boot. I get nothing but Windows now. Any ideas?

if you restsrt and hold down alt, what boot options do you see
try restarting holding down command+R, choose disk utility and tell me what you see on the upper left hand side under the name of your physical drive

  • How can I restore Windows 7 to Bootcamp partition - not reformat the entire hard drive?

    Hello Apple (Mac) Community,
I originally posted this question over on answers.microsoft, but no help was forthcoming. Hope someone can help me with a problem that's (almost) making me nuts! I teach graphics to college students. In brief: I run Windows 7 Pro 64 on a Mac Pro tower, along with Snow Leopard (OSX). Windows is loaded on one partition of a 1TB drive. The other partition is a Mac backup. The Mac OS is on a different drive. Everything was going swimmingly with both OS, until recently. Unfortunately, the drive with Windows showed problems and I determined that the HD was either toast or needed a total reformat. My Mac data was all backed-up. Now I wanted to backup Windows so I can easily get back to the relatively happy point of my Windows 7 experience (drivers loaded, dual monitors all working, etc.). I did some online searching and the recommendation was to create a "system image" of the existing Windows 7 install by attaching an external drive, formatting that to NTFS and selecting "backup to image" in Windows. I did that and also took the opportunity to "create a backup disc" on a DVD. (Windows recommended). Next I rebooted back to Mac OS and completely reformatted the problem 1TB disc to a single partition, zero all data, just to see if it would actually reformat. It all worked! So far, so good. Next I used Bootcamp to create two partitions, one for Windows. I then restarted using the Win7 Pro (64) install disc, reformatted the Bootcamp disk to NTFS (as required) and installed Windows 7. After all that is completed and all working, I next try to use the restore from image function while booted in Windows. I'm instructed to restart from the Win install disc, which I do. Here's where things get difficult. When I try to choose restore from image, at that point the installer asks which drives to I want to exclude... but does not show partitions, only full HDs. I do not want to reformat the entire 1TB drive. I only want Windows on the 120gb Bootcamp partition (which is already formatted for Windows BTW). I spent a lot of time online reading through articles with users having the same frustration.
So here (at long last) is my question: How can I either restore Windows just to a Bootcamp partition... using "Windows System Image" or if that can't be done... can I somehow import all of the settings, etc. from the "image" (image is on external HD) into a fresh Win 7 install? So far the "backup disc" also seems useless. I can't even boot to Windows from it. BTW Apple folks: the only response on the MS side was that some "expert" simply posted links on how to install Windows and restore... not helpful with my particular problem of restoring to a partition.
Any help would be appreciated! Hopefully some help that even a Mac user / new Windows user could understand would be better! Thanks!

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • Bootcamp partition is no longer visible and bootable

I decided to change size of my bootcamp (windows partition) by following steps in this thread:
how to resize my bootcamp partition without deleting  itit
I ended up with having bigger windows partition (which is what I was trying to achieve), that I was able to boot to, but my Windows disk was no longer seen in OS X. I reviewed the thread above once again and it was pointing to another thread where folks were discussing issue similar to mine:
Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition
Bottom line - Unfortunately, after performing the suggested action plan, I am no longer able to boot to my windows partition nor to see it from OS X
(I am able to select Windows disk while hitting Alt/Option during the boot, but then I get the message 'A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart')
Please see the diagnostics below and please advise how this could be fixed - at minimum I would like to boot to Windows partition again, maximum - also to access it via OSX as well.
