Help - Windows 7 reinstall mistake

My HP Pavilion G Series laptop went haywire and I decided to reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. However, after a full reinstall, I have lost ALL of my programs. I can't even get on the internet via wireless. Please help!

Hi:
When you reinstall an operating system, you lose all of your programs.
If you just installed windows 7 "over" the previous W7 installation that was there, then windows 7 created a windows.old folder.
If that was the original HP installation, unless you removed the folder, there is a SWSetup folder in the Windows.old folder that contains sub folders with all of the program installation files that came with your notebook.  Click on the folders inside the SWSetup folder and you can reinstall the programs that came with your notebook.
You can also retrieve all of your personal files in the windows.old folder and copy them to the new W7 installation in their respective places (documents, music, photos, etc.).
Then copy the SWSetup folder to a portable hard drive for safekeeping.
If there is no SWSetup folder and you want the programs that came with your PC, then you will need to order a set of recovery disks for your specific model.
If you post the hardware ID for the Network Controller listed under the Other Devices category in the device manager, I will post the link to the wireless driver you need.
If you do not know where to find that information, please read the guide at the link below.

I had to restart by resetting the NVRAM/PRAM.  Now I have a window showing OS X Utilities.  My options are restore from Time Machine Backup (which I could do), Disk Utility to repair or erase, get help online or reinstall OS X.  What should I do?  The problem began when I tried to restart my computer and the only thing I saw was the grey screen, Apple logo, and the timer; the computer wouldn't restart from there.

I searched through trouble shooting options on the Apple Support page and was able to make it this far.

  • Recover iTunes after Windows XP reinstall

I apologize if this has already been answered a number of times.  I have spent some time already searching for an answer.
My desktop computer's internal hard drive required a Windows XP SP3 reinstall, and thus reformat.  I have a copy of the My Music\iTunes folder on an external hard drive (the music media is inside that folder as well).  When I downloaded and reinstalled iTunes on my newly restored computer, it of course came in fresh and blank.  Because I still don't have a firm grasp of all the syncing rules and scenarios, I thought that connecting my iPad 3 and iPod Touch 3 to iTunes would restore everything contained on those devices into iTunes, but it did not.
To complicate matters, when Windows was reinstalled, a different username was created by accident.  So the absolute file paths in, for example, the XML library in my backup of iTunes on my external drive show a different path (if that makes a difference, and thus reflects what may also be in the database itself).  So I created a new user account on my machine with that same username, so the file paths match.  I then copied the iTunes from the external drive into the My Music folder under that new user account.  So I figured everything was good to go.  I then logged out and logged back in under the new user account, and launched iTunes.  But it went through the launching sequence as a brand new installation of iTunes under this user account, and came up empty.
How do I get myself back to where I was before Windows crashed on me.  I have a few dozen ripped albums and some purchased music on my iPod and iPad, a few apps on my iPod and a ton of purchased (and free) apps on my iPad.  So we're not just talking about music.
I appreciate any help anyone can give.  Thanks so much.
    Gary

"The devices see the reformatted drive as a different computer and that is the default warning when you attempt to sync to another computer."
True in the general case, when two computers are running iTunes with different libraries - in this case any iDevice can be synced with only one, and will present the "... is synched with another iTunes library ... Do you want to erase ...?" message if connected to a different one.  However, that behavior isn't because a different computer is detected - if an iTunes library is replicated from one PC to another (i.e., the iTunes database, media, and associated files are duplicated) then these will be seen as the same library for the purposes of synchronization.  Although the internals of the iTunes database can't readily be accessed, its reasonable to assume that this "library identity" is based on this data element, as listed within the iTunes Library.xml file:
Interestingly, this "Library Persistent ID" value is also used as the name of the first-level subfolder under iTunes\Album Artwork\Cache.  The basis of the iDevice-library dependence is - even if this is not the (only) way its implemented - definitely not hardware based. I run three different systems with iTunes, where the library is routinely replicated from the "master" to two secondary systems (using SyncToy and an external HDD):
With this configuration, I can connect an iDevice to any of the three systems and sync it as normal, without ever seeing the "... is synched with another iTunes library ... Do you want to erase ...?" message.
Given the scenario that the OP described, the iTunes Library.itl file now in use is, logically, the same as that before the export/reformat/restore operations - so the dreaded Do you want to erase ...? message shouldn't appear.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Did a Windows 7 reinstall, now I can't factory reset to get drivers (p775)

My satellite p775 bricked after randomly restarting it last week. I tried to factory reset it but it hung up several times during the reset. So I took somewhere to be assessed and it was determined that the problem was a software malfunction. I had a fresh Windows 7 reinstalled and now it works perfectly.
However, I don't have any of my drivers. I figured I could factory reset it now without problem to install all those drivers again but when I go to do it, I don't have the option. I went on Toshiba's website to download the drivers manually but I don't know where to start. I'm not the most computer savy person. I wanted to factory reset it because it's easier and it installs all the drivers I was used to having before it bricked. Any advice?

Hi! I know what you mean. I really like all the Toshiba features. I have used my recovery CD's (5 of them) to restore back to factory one time. It worked pretty much without a glitch. I think I had to eject and reinsert one of the CD's, but it went back to factory and everything restored back to factory settings. I sense then have created a flash drive with factory restore on it. Haven't had the need to use it, but makes me feel good knowing I have it in a drawer I guess if you want the Toshiba restore to factory, you will have to order it from Toshiba. I supplied the link in my first reply. We learn from our mistakes and some times we have to pay the price. I'm very happy with my Toshiba PC. I joined this forum to pass forward what I have learned about my Toshiba. Good luck. The CD's will cost you 30$ shipping

  • Gulliver -  Help Window Still Blank

    Gulliver,
I am still having the Blank Help Window problem. I fix it by deleting the preference files and Help works fine for a few days and then the Help window goes blank again. The trouble is usually connected to OS X help but occasionally affects other apps as well. I decided today to follow your advice and try reinstalling the Help Viewer file from Install CD #1 by using Pacifist in hopes that it will fix the problem for once and all.
So I used Pacifist to open the OS X Install disk and then I searched for the file "Help Viewer" using Find. When Find was done there were 16 Help Viewer files in the sidebar window. All but 1 of them had .app tacked on. The one without .app was simply listed as Help Viewer.
Do I select and reinstall all of these files or just some of them?
    Thanks!
Mac mini 1.25 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi Winston,
usually deleting these files corrects the problem. Since it reoccures you might have a different problem not directly connected with Help Viewer but corrupting it's prefereences and/or cache. Therefore I doubt that reinstalling Help Viewer will correct the problem once and for all. However, you can try: Download the 10.4.5 Combo update, Open Pacifist, open the 10.4.5 Combo installer package, navigate to System/Library/Core Services and reinstall the Help Viewer you find there.
Try to create a new user account and log-in as this user. Now check if the problem occurs there as well. Also do some system maintenance as described here: Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance

  • Help window permanently closed

I use Flash CS3 on a Mac with OS X 10.5.6. When I go to Help
    > Flash Help, a narrow Help bar appears across the top of the
Flash workspace, but I can't open it. Clicking on Help at the left
or on what I take to be an icon for enlarging the window on the
upper right, there is a momentary flash of what must be the Help
    window, but it immediately closes.
The PDF Help guide says, "You can restore the default
workspace at any time by choosing the default option on the Window
    > Workspace menu." When I go to the Window menu, it shows Tools,
Controller, and Project, no Workspace menu. I reinstalled Flash,
but the results are the same.
I shall be grateful for any suggestions.

Followup: The Window menu was limited, because I didn't have
a Flash file open at the time. I now have succeeded in restoring
the default workspace and with it the Help window, but it would
have been nice to restore the Help window without returning the
    workspace to the default.

  • Aperture help window is blank

When I click Aperture help the window opens without contents. How can I resolve this?

    Hello Willy,
what is your Aperture Version? And what are your "Language & Text" settings in System Preferences?
Assuming, you are using the latest Aperture 3.2.2 and your System is set to "English", the all relevant files for the Help-Window are stored inside your Aperture.app Application Package.
If you open the Help Window in Aperture, it should open the following Web-Page:
         /Applications/Aperture.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/aperture_help/index .html
You may check if this file is readable by opening the Aperture Application package:
Select Aperture in the Applications folder and ctrl-click it; then select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu, and navigate to Contents -> Resources -> English.lproj
Check if the necessary files are there and readable, and check the permissions. Try to open the index file in Safari.
If these files are not readable, try to reinstall Aperture.
If these files seem to be o.k. remove the Aperture Preference file, as described in
    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
    Regards

  • ITunes 7.7.1 help window is empty.

    Hi,
I've downloaded and installed iTunes 7.7.1 and am up and running. Works fine.
The glitch is that clicking the help menu brings up an empty help window, for some reason the text in help window doesn't show up. I reinstalled but still the same problem.
Can I download separately the 7.7.1 manual or help text? If so, I can't locate it.
I have basic questions on selecting manual and automatic operation. When my iPod is connected, the program just takes off on its own and starts reviewing every song in the library. It is very difficult to stop.
    Thanks for any help.

  • What determines whether the Label name and/or Caption appears in the context help window but in other cases, both the label and caption appear in the context help window?

I am trying to polish an application, and find that I cannot seem to reliably control which of the label or caption text appears in the context help window because I don't understand what rules are in place to determine which should appear. It seems like if I reate a named constant, then use it's right click menu command "Create Indicator" I get a control with only a Label (as long as I don't add a caption). This then appears in the context help window as the label name followed by the description text (after entering some description text). But if I add a caption, the label name is shown in bracket
s which is a 'feature' I would like to avoid, because I have certain controls where I would like to use a descriptive variable name on the block diagram side without using so much space on the front panel. It seems like there is no way to avoid showing the Label name in the context help for a control/indicator. Is this true?
I thought the purpose of having a seperate caption was to make the text that appears with a control programmatically controllable, but if that control is not extended to what appears in the context help window, it limits the usefulness of the caption and forces me to re-consider some Label names. However, the problem goes deeper than that because then even when I make the label and caption exactly the same, or if I delete (via a select caption text-backspace or select caption text- delete key .. sequence) the caption for a control, the label name in the context help window still appears in square brackets!
Can I have complete control over the context help fo
r a particular control (or has anyone found a third-party context help solution that functions compatibly with LabVIEW 7 in a built application that they will be so kind as to recommend?)
I have used LabVIEW for three years, and I am now using LabVIEW 7.0.

Sorry for that.. I was changing the text of my question and didn't read carefully enough in the preview stage. I wanted it to read "What determines whether the Label name and/or Caption appears in the context help window?"

  • How do you stop the help window from floating to the top?

Is there way to change the help window's behavior so that it acts like a normal window?
It takes so long to set up seeing the problem and the help at the same time, then go back to reading and then back again.
The floating to the top is a very unwellcome "Feature" and microsoft-like not Apple-like.

    hmslfi wrote:

That depends on your POV. Some may prefer the default behaviour, because it doesn't allow the help window to be hidden by the working window.
Also, keep in mind that you can use the Minimise (yellow) button in the window's title bar.
However, if you really want to change the default floating window, there is a preference you can change with the defaults command:
$ defaults write com.apple.helpviewer NormalWindow -bool true
Alternatively, you can enable Help Viewer's developer mode
$ defaults write com.apple.helpviewer DevMode -bool true
    (See
    <http://www.macworld.com/article/158482/2011/03/hidehelpviewer.html>
    for details.)

  • How can I open a URL from a Custom Button in a second help window?

I have a custom button, which currently opens a URL in a web
browser, using a redirect page. How can I change this so that it
opens in a second help window instead? If I understand some of the
posts I've read, it is possible by linking the button to a related
topics function but I've no idea how this is done.
As usual, your help is most appreciated. Thanks a lot.

    Hi, ecoulyn,
You need to make a topic file like the one below the target
    of the Jump button.
The onLoad function on the Body start-tag causes the Related
Topics command to fire when the topic file is loaded in the topic
pane. When specifying the file name of the topic to display in the
secondary window, you must always prepend it with the name of your
.chm file, followed by "::/". Otherwise, an error message appears
when the Jump button is clicked.
