HELP; wireless router working on iMAC but SUPER SLOW !!

I have consistently been having problems with my router WRT54G version 5
where download speed is very slow, I cannot even watching streaming video
without interruption every few seconds. I thought the problem was with my
bandwidth speed so today I upgraded my plan with my ISP and they told me to
do a speedtest to check that it was already upgraded.
I have a Windows PC located next to the WRT54G version 5.  I attached the
PC directly to the modem and got close to the speed allowed by my ISP.
I tried the PC on the WRT54G connected via ethernet cable and got dismal
rates of 500k to 600k download speed.
I have an iMAC in another room and also tested it via wireless on the WRT54G.
Initially, I got close to the max speed of my ISP.  Tested again a few minutes after and got download speed of 1,300 kbs.  Tested again and got 1,000 kbs. Then now about an hour later, i tested again and got very slow speeds of 600-700k download speed.  Note that I did not move my iMAC from its location while conducting these differnt speed tests.  The problem cannot be with my ISP because directly connecting to the modem without a router achieves the desired download speed.  Its only when I use the router that i get wide results and now, my connection remains intermittent.
What can be wrong? I dont have any interference.
It was suggested to change the channel of the router but must update firmware first.  But firmware does not come in MAC version.
Any other ideas?  Help ... i am desperate!!  Now i feel stupid upgrading my bandwidth when that doesnt seem to be the problem at all.

You can connect your pc to router, download the latest firmware for wrt54g v5 and upgrade it. After upgrade reset router and then reconfigure it once again. Then do the speed test you will receive excellent speed.

  • WRT54G Wireless router works on desktop, but not laptop

    I have a WRT54G wireless router with version 1.00.4
It works on my desktop, I can log into the net no prob
My laptop however (dell w/ windows xp) does not even recognize it.
Wierd thing is, it worked perfectly with no problems today, I have been going online with my laptop using the wireles router for weeks now..
I haven'tupgraded the firmware, or do anything to any of the computers whatsoever.
When it stopped working, I reset my router/modem, I transfered over my MAC, etc.. but the laptop still does not even recognize my router signal when I try to search for it on my laptop.. It will recognize a handful of other wireless routers from the neighborhood, but not mine.
My desktop is windows xp, and so is my router.
    Any helpwould be greatly appreciated.

  • Need help setting up my d-link wireless router to my imac

I need some help trying to set up my D-Link WBR 2310 wireless router to my iMac. I currently have Bell Sympatico high speed.
The reason I want to set up the wireless router is because my girlfriend works from home sometimes with her office computer downstairs and needs a wireless connection (she has a PC). I tried to call D-Link, but they're useless.
Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. It would be great to know what settings to change and as much step by step info as possible. I realize it's probably pretty simple to set up, but I'm fairly new to Macs and also to wireless.
    Thanks again

    Hello,
Connect the D-Link to the iMac by Ethernet.
    Open Safari (or Firefox)
    Navigate to http://192.168.1.1
Enter your password (default user is Admin and password "admin" - change it!)
Find the Wireless Security section and change the SSID to your own name i.e. "home network" .
Set the Encryption setting to "WPA" and enter a password of your choice. This is the encryption key and is different to the router's admin password.
Configure the WAN part of the router (which will vary depending on your ISP).
Configure the DHCP to serve clients (should be a simple on/off).
    Disconnect the iMac
Go to the iMac and turn on Airport on (on the menu bar).
When the iMac finds your SSID select it and enter the encryption password.
Check to allow Keychain to store that detail.
    Hope that helps

  • What is the best wireless router for my imac G4

i need a wireless router for my imac g4. Which one do you recommend? All all wireless routers capatible with macs?

As Donald mentions, the routers are all compatible with Macs, but the software CD that they include often has Windows specific software on them that is really just a front-end for configuring the router for use. It does nothing that you cannot do yourself manually by accessing the router through the IP address that gets you into the router settings.
If it sounds difficult, it certainly is not. Once you are in - and that is simple - the router's info is in a nice graphical interface that is simple to use.
I use a Netgear WGR614 for my mixed Mac-PC network at it works like a charm. I got it at Best Buy for $39.99.

  • Trying to get a WRT54GX2 wireless router working with a W...

Trying to get a WRT54GX2 wireless router working with a WPC54G wireless card. The laptop and desktop both will access the Internet and work when hardwired through the router's Ethernet ports. When trying to access wireless, the Laptop shows to be connected to the router and also to Internet, but Internet Explorer can not access any websites.  Suggestions? Thanks.

what ip address does the laptop get ?? ensure that the laptop is not set for a static ip add....and it gets an ip add from the router ..

  • Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except join not extend and I can not get a network on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Rout/

Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except "join a wireless network (which it does) not "extend a wireless network" (Led turns yellow and I can not get a network working on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Router.
    Airport gets it address DHCP.

Funny how I can ping the Extreme but the Hard Ethernet ports dont seem to work correctly.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "Join" a wireless network, the Ethernet ports are not enabled.
Oddly, the AirPort Express has a special feature that will allow it to to "Join" virtually any wireless network.....and the Ethernet port can be enabled. So, an Express would work for your purpose to provide an Ethernet connection to the media player. This assumes that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your main router.
Note that the Express will not provide any additional wireless coverage when it "Joins".

  • Which wireless router works best with Apple products?

Which wireless router works best with Apple products?

I cannot comment of Airport products, as I have none.  Nor would I suppose to argue with Kappy or Ralph.
But in a pinch a LinkSys E2500 will work, as it does for me.

  • My Telus wireless only works with WEP, but if I switch to WEP the wireless goes down on the other Windows computer being used in the same house.  Is there a way for both of us to get wireless internet or do one of us have to be connected by the ethernet?

My Telus wireless only works with WEP, but if I switch to WEP, the wireless on the other computers in the house (which is Windows and WPA) stops working. My computer works with the ethernet cord but I want to be wireless too!  Do one of us have to sacrifice our wireless?

My wireless earbuds work just fine, but some third-party apps play audio only through the iPod and iPhone speaker even though the buds are properly connected. Does anyone know why and is there a solution?

Assuming you are using Bluetooth headphones, do the apps have the option to use Bluetooth?
The app should have an option to select the speaker (or wired earphones) or the Bluetooth headphones.

  • Wireless not working on Macbook but is OK on iMac

I've had a wireless network working successfully for 5 years which suddenly gave up the ghost this week. I have an early MacBook and a recent iMac, TimeMachine/basestation thing connected to a broadband modem. Given the iMac can connect to the network I assume its the MacBook rather than the network that's at fault.
The MacBook can 'see' the network name but the signal level is always zero, and when I try to connect the connection times out (despite being 30cm from the base station). Network working fine on ethernet.
I've reinstalled Snow Leopard, checked airport utility and created a new network, verified and repaired the disk and repaired permissions. have also done an Apple Hardware Test. No problems found.
I'm wondering if the wireless card's at fault. Any ideas on how I can figure this out?

If the network you have is the one selected in istumbler in your first picture then the issue I can see there is that your using channel 4.
the only wireless channels that you should really use are 1, 6 or 11.
The rest bleed and cause degradation of signal.

  • Connecting a laptop PC to a wireless router on an iMac

I cannot get a laptop PC to connect to the internet through a Linksys wireless router I have connected to my iMac. It was working great for a while, but the network disappeared from the laptop's "available networks" box, and I've been trying for hours to get it to work again. The Mac help desk was of no help and said I had to call Linksys, however, I think it is how I have the network or sharing configured. I've changed so many thinks trying to get it to work, I have probably messed all the configurations up.
This can't be that hard. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Since you already have the iMac connected, via Ethernet, to the Linksys router, you'll want to disconnect the modem's USB connection to the iMac.
Which model Linksys to you have? If it has more than one Ethernet port, try connecting the PC to one of the Linksys's Ethernet ports and verify that you can get an Internet connection.

  • G780 wireless stopped working; networks found but can't connect

I have a G780 bought early this year. It came with Windows 8, which I am still using. Everything was working just fine until today. All of a sudden I can't connect to my wireless networks (I have a router that can have a "guest network" in addition to the normal one, and I can't connect to either of these). I had been fiddling with some of the settings last night, but everything had still been working fine. I can connect with other devices so I know the networks are working.
The networks do show up in the list of available networks, but whenever I try and connect it just doesn't work. To make sure I wasn't just typing the passwords incorrectly I tried disabling all security on one of the networks (so it was a totally open network with no password), and the laptop still can't connect. I've tried restarting the wireless router, restarting the computer, updating the driver for the wireless card, uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, enabling and disabling the wireless card, unchecking the option to allow the computer to turn off the wireless card to save power, and as a last ditch effort I even did this Windows 8 "Refresh" option which uninstalls all programs you've installed and resets options to the defaults. That also included uninstalling my antivirus program, so I've tried connecting without that, too. Nothing has made any difference.
Edited to add that I also downloaded and ran the diagnostic tool from the Lenovo site for my laptop and version of Windows for wireless networking issues and it didn't show anything.
I would really appreciate any insight as to what to do next. I'm pretty much at my wits' end with this.

    hi Maltiriel,
Thanks for using Lenovo Community Forums!
Can you try doing a system restore, maybe set it 2 days back or when you last work with the Wireless with no issues,
    If that doesn't help,
Pull up the page on the right where it shows you all available wireless networks,
      > Look for your Network and do a right click make sure you "Forget" the network first,
      >Now Try following this Article and Connect to your Wifi Manually,
    http://www.op97.org/technology/documents/1HowtoManuallyConnecttoaWirelessNetwork.pdf
Can you also share what it says when you connect to your network
    thanks,
    Best Regards

  • Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme but error says Ethernet unplugged.

Trying to connect Verizon wireless router to Airport Extreme and error says Ethernet Unplugged.

So, AirPort Utility running on the Windows Vista desktop can "see" the AirPort Extreme and displays its icon, but gives that error message at some point in the setup process? How far does it get?
Other questions that may help me (or somebody else) understand your problem better:
Which of the pieces were verified as working before the introduction of the AirPort Extreme?
Did you have the desktop computer attached to the Verizon GT704WGB with one of the Ethernet cables you are now trying to use? Which one? Have you tried the other one to be sure it also works?
Are you using the same port on the GT704WGB? Have you tried another one?
If the desktop has multiple ethernet ports, are you using the same one?
Had you done any special configuration of the ethernet port on the Verizon GT704WGB to get it to work with your desktop?
What category ethernet cable are you using? 3? 5? 5e? 6?

  • Will I lose all of my documents saved on my Time Capsule if I reset it in order to get the Airport wireless router working again?

Hello I am having problems with my Time Capsule (2nd Gen) and being able to get the wireless signal working throughout my house.  I have concluded the only step I need to try to fix this is to reset the Time Capsule.
My concern is that if I reset the capsule I will lose all of the documents off of the external hard drive of the Time Capsule.  Will this happen?
Is there anyway to avoid losing these files, or is there some way to attach a USB cord to the Time Capsule and be able to retrieve my files?
Thanks for any help out there.

Correct.. no files are lost in resets..
Plug the TC straight into the computer by ethernet.. use a LAN port of the TC. <-->
    Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.
When it comes backup the TC will have an IP of 10.0.1.1 and the computer will be 10.0.1.2
You can access all your files on the TC.. with very minimal setup.. but Mavericks can be a right royal pain.
If the disk doesn't show up in Finder.. manually mount it.
    Go, Connect to Server..
AFP://10.0.1.1 and when the computer finds the resource it will ask for a password.. type in public unless you changed it.
You should now be able to access the files.
I recommend if you have important stuff on the TC you do not want to lose.. get a USB (or faster) drive today.. plug it into the computer and make a backup.. the TC is not adequate as a NAS or file server as it has no ability to either backup itself or even have TM back it up.
