Help with a referenced file issue
Ok, when I import photos, I import them into the Aperture library. I do not reference other file locations. So here is what happened. I exported a project from one aperture library on an external HD to imported it into another library on a different drive. Everythign seemed to be fine, the files were there. Well, I went to open up a file and it keeps telling me "NO REFERENCED FILES The selection doesn’t have any referenced files." for all the photos. If I right click and choose Locate referenced files, I get the exact same message! Help! I really do not need the full size images and thought I could just drag and drop the picture it is showing me, but that is a no go as well...is there any way for me to 1. find if the original files are in my library somewhere (my gut says no) or 2. obviously aperture has some sort of file since I can see them and expand them to fullscreen...can I get those from anywhere??

This is one of the more frustrating "features" of Aperture. (In my opinion, at least. There are plenty of folks here who see this as The Way It Should Be.)
When you let Aperture manage your library, it does just that -- it is managing the location and manipulation of your files, and doing its best to keep you from accessing the master images directly outside Aperture. On a referenced library, Aperture will show you the individual master file in the Finder. On a managed library, that's disabled. The argument goes that this prevents you from manipulating the file in a way that would screw up Aperture's management of your edits/versions. And I see that point. Still, I wish I could tell Aperture to trust me enough to let me see my own files when I need to. There are plenty of times when I'd like to copy a file somewhere without using Aperture's "export" feature, and copying a file does nothing to harm the gentle balance of Aperture's library.
You CAN still drag & drop with a managed library, however. The key is that you have to turn on previews. This generates a small jpg for each of your files, which you can drag anywhere (including the desktop). In preferences, you can decide how large you want previews to be, and you can tell Aperture to generate previews whenever you import new files. For your existing library, you just need to select everything, right click, and "Update previews." It will take some time, but will eventually chug through them all. Once it's finished, you can drag from the Aperture browser window just as if you were dragging from a finder window. Again, the size of the file you're dragging will depend on the quality you've selected in preferences for Previews.

Help with backing up files and opening from disk image.
I am trying to back up my hard drive so that I can send my PowerBook in for repair. I used disk utility from my Panther install discs to create a disk image of my HD.
The disk image was created successfully and mounts perfectly on my HD. I can open it and open all of my files from the disk image just fine when it is mounted on my PowerBook.
However, when I take it to a different Mac, things start getting sketchy. I can open Word files just fine, but Excel files claim they are read-only and cannot open. I checked the permission back on my PowerBook to see what was up, and the files were read/write for the owner and read-only for groups and others, but they should still open as read-only files right? I even checked the permissions on the Word files to see if there was a difference, but there was no difference.
I can take the external HD back to my PowerBook, remount it, and open everything fine, but then on the other Mac it is a no go.
I need to back this up for when it is out on repair, but I need to know that the files will open in case I need to restore my disk.
Can anyone help??
BTW, I couldn't find the best forum to post this in, if there is a better one please direct me there...solution:
I went into the Apple Store nearby today to send my PowerBook off for repair for a screen issue, and in the process got help with my backing up issue.
It seems all one needs to do is copy the file from the external hard drive to the internal drive.
It was that simple.

I have been syncing calendar and contacts on my iPhone 5 and Outlook 2007 using iCloud 2.1.3 (my PC is running Vista). All was well until the events I entered on the phone were showing up in Outlook, but not the other way around. I’ve tried the usual recommended steps: deselecting calendar and contacts in the iCloud control panel and then re-selecting, signing out of the panel and back in, and repairing the Outlook installation in control panel. I even uninstalled iCloud on the PC and downloaded it again (same version).
The furthest I’ve gotten is step 2 (and once, step 3) of 7 while performing “Outlook Setup For iCloud.” At that point I get, “Your setup couldn’t be started because of an unexpected error.” After the first attempt at all this, all my calendar events disappeared from Outlook, although they are still in iCloud calendar and on my phone.

You mean an image such as a scanned document?
If that is the case, the file doesn't contain any text for Reader Out Loud to read. In order to fix that, you would need an application such as Adobe Acrobat that does Optical Character Recognition to convert the images to actual text.
You can also try to export the file as a Word document or something else using ExportPDF which I believe offers OCR and is cheaper than Acrobat. -

Firstly, I am running DVD SP 3.0.2 on Mac OS 10.4.7 on a G5 Dual 2 GHz 3Gb Ram plenty of HD space...
I am creating a DVD with: An intro sequence, a main menu, 4 sub menus, and 4 sections with around 12 chapters each.
I am having some big problems, and a pretty stuck. I will lest them separately below, numbered. If you are able to help, please refer clearly to which number you are helping with. Any help is MUCH appreciated! Many thanks!!
1. Each of the 5 menus (1 main, 4 sub) have a background video, and a separate audio track. I added the background videos by simply dragging them to the assests panel, then from there onto the menu editor window. They are created in FCP and are properly encoded. However, when I click the motion button, or use the simulator, the videos do not show up. The music plays, but all i see is plain black.
What is going on?!?!?!
2. I am really struggling with rollover buttons. I have custom created buttons, and I wand them to have a soft red glow around them when hovered over. HOW ON EARTH DO I ACTUALLY DO THIS??
The buttons are in photoshop so can be exported with/without background/glow in any format.
3. Is it possible, once I have got the above rollover working, to have an image to the right hand side of my buttons which changes with the the button rollover. i.e. hover over button 1, see image 1. hover over button 2, image changes to image 2.

Sorry, I'm not sure about the motion menus. I avoid those whenever possible. But you might click on the menu in the storyline tab (whatever it's called -- the hierarchical view with the disc, tracks, slideshows, etc.) and look at the properties and see if there's anything you have to enable specifically for motion. And be sure the motion button is on on the main display/preview area, but it sounds like you already know how that works.

I think it is obvious that when a button is hovered over, I want it to glow red, and the image to the right will change to match the respective button.

Yes.
First, your menus have to be layered menus. Unfortunately, there's no way to convert non-layered menus to layered menus, so if you already have non-layered, you'll have to just delete them and create new layered menus. The button (and menu item) to create a layered menu should be right by the normal new-menu item.
Next, the graphical work is all in Photoshop.
Side tip: You may already know this, but I found it's best to use 640x480 for the Photoshop document. When I do text and leave it as a text object in the Photoshop file, it resizes poorly in DVDSP. So this ends up being another 720x480 vs. 640x480 square/rectangular pixel conversion thing. DVDSP plays in the 640x480 world, at least as far as the designer can see. So I keep my images at 640x480, and it doesn't have to resize, and everything looks right.
Moving on... Set up your basic background, the part that won't change (or will have other things covering it, like for your square image).
Then put in all the buttons and images you'll be using, each part in a separate layer. This could have fifteen buttons (you have five buttons, and there can be three versions for each -- inactive, selected, and activated versions) and five or six square images (you said one for each button, and you might want a blank default if, say, you want to add a "back" button on the menu and want some blank or default image for the square when they're on the "back" button).
Sometimes people don't bother with a separate "active" button state, but you usually want some visual feedback that they clicked the button. Also, I usually just build the default (unselected) button into the background; that's less hassle later on, and it will just draw the selected or activated buttons over that when the user is on that button.
Line up all your buttons and images. All the square images lined up perfectly on top of each other, all the buttons in the right places (so you'll have three buttons stacked on top of each other in each spot). Give each layer a short but quickly recognizable name, and line them up in a consistent order. (button1-default, button1-selected, button1-active, button1-squarepicture, then button2-default, ... etc.) Photoshop and DVDSP don't care, but it makes it easier for you later.
Note that earlier versions of DVDSP won't show Photoshop layer effects. (They handle layers, just not the effects, like inner glow, outer bezel, etc.) I don't remember when they changed this, but I think it was version 4.something. So if you're using that method to make your buttons glow, you may have to flatten each selected or active button layer, and you may even need to create a dummy blank layer underneath it first to give it something to flatten onto.
Save the file as a standard Photoshop file (.psd). Drag the file onto your DVDSP layered menu and set it as the background.
Now, in DVDSP, create all your buttons. Just drag boxes over/around the button pictures you have. Feel free to make them extra-big; users won't see the actual area you've selected, and bigger areas makes it easier for people to hit them if they're using a mouse on a computer to watch the DVD. You can point the buttons to their targets now if you want, and set the end jumps on the tracks if you want. (I tend to set the end jumps on the tracks so they automatically select the button for the next track.)
Now's the fun part, since it will actually hook everything up and should be easy if your naming layer order were consistent. Click on the layered menu (in that hierarchical view) and look at the properties window. (Sorry I can't remember the technical names for all these windows; I'm doing this all from memory. So feel free to ask more questions if you can't find what I'm talking about.) One of the properties tabs should have a grid of checkboxes with a list of your layers. Make sure the background is checked for all of the states. Then check the layers you want to show for each button state, as well as the corresponding square image to show for each.
Again, I'm doing this from memory, and I can't remember exactly how things are listed in that grid. But I remember it keeps your layers in the same order you put them in the Photoshop file and shows you those names, so it should make it easy to go down the list and check the right boxes.
And another side tip: You can update the Photoshop file, but once you've put it in DVDSP, if you change the layer order, it will screw up the check boxes you checked. It always shows you the layer names correctly, but it keeps the checkboxes in DVDSP simply assigned to the layer number, so the fifth layer will keep the same checkboxes even if you juggle them so some other layer is now the fifth layer. So if you do juggle the layers in Photoshop, go back and fix the checkbox list in DVDSP.

Thanksyou might have a security violation and you do have a
load-target issue. remove that "_parent": there's no 2nd parameter
in the loadMovie() method.
if you want to replace the main swf with that url, loading
into _root is fine. otherwise, you want to use a different
target. -
Begging for help with podcast xml file
Hey All,
I have a podcast on iTunes. I am hosting the xml file and podcast mp3s on a friends server so Im not using any service. Everything is working and Ive sucessfully added 4 podcasts so far, and it shows up correctly in iTunes on my PC.
However my podcasts do not showup correct in the iTunes store website, or on idevices. Meaning, I number my shows 001_"NAME" 002_"NAME" etc. Yet in the iTunes store they show up out of order. So my last show is not at the top its at the bottom, and they are all mixed up (like 002, 001, 004, 003 instead of 4,3,2,1) Also the publish date is the same on two of them (and not what i have in the xml file) and doesnt show up at all on the other two. I assume this is a problem with the xml file, yet I dont see any problems with it. But it seems odd that it all works correctly in the actual iTunes program. Ive tried different code, but im very much a noob at it, and everything i find online is from 5 - 10 years ago or wants you to host your podcasts with their site and I dont need that.

I don't see the issues you mention. The order in the Store and when subscribing is what I would expect:
The order in the Store depends on clicking the header to the column: the default is the first one. Some of the dates are a day out - this is quite commmon and is probably a time zone issue (it may be different where you are - I'm in the UK). I don't know why you are seeing a garbled order unless you've clicked on one of the other columns in the Store. -
Help with building flash files for streaming
I filmed a product demonstration for a client who wanted to put it on his website. I edited the footage in PremPro CS4 and exported to Media Encoder as F4V file format. After encoding imported footage into CS4 Encore, created timeline, chose, Flash from Format and swf for output. Progressive Download which allows video to begin playing as it is downloaded (I believe), chose destinations and settings. After transcoding I had 1 file folder, Sources that contained the following files _PGC_Bpge_entryPoint_Bbp_1.f4v, and then 3 separate files, *not* in the file folder called Sources. They are
AuthoredContent.xml, FlashDVD.swf, and Index.html.
I submitted all files to client who gave them to web designer. Designer said these were the wrong files and he could not use them. I called designer and basically he said I didn't know what I was doing. I told him he needed all files to put up the flash video. Anyway, am I missing something, doing something wrong? Are there other files he needs? He said he only needed 1 file. Or is it the designer? I'm not thin skinned so if it's me please tell me so, so I don't make the same errors. Thanks. This is similar to youtube, blogger, etc.
The web designer can use what you provided, which does what you describe the client wanting. But the web designer may need to integrate what Encore provided onto a web page, and the client may not have made the expectations clear and may not know what is needed. As I said, the Encore to flash player gives almost no options for the player controls and colors etc may be problems.
<Encore did encode the f4v file. When I exported from PremPro what preset should I hve chosen -- mpeg2 DVD, flv/f4v. So the only file he needs in addition to what I gave him is the original f4v file?
I don't know whether the f4v you exported from Premiere was progressive. The f4v from Encore might be fine, or you might need to export from Premiere again.
The other issue is that some "player" with controls needs to be provided by you or the web designer (who may have an issue with the client not getting the designer to lay all this out to begin with). There are several threads about "flv players" you might check out. Does the client have video on his site already? If so, you can figure out what they are using, and it will help with your process.

Fastest? Relocate Masters or Finder move with Locate referenced files
I have maxed out the 2 x 1TB drives in my MP dedicated to referenced masters, and I'm about to consolidate them onto a new 2 x 2TB drive setup. My question is which is the fastest solution for moving 1.5 TB of images on my current setup onto one of the new 2TB drives.
FYI, the new HDD is now connected via eSATA to an external housing, with write speeds of around 100 MB/sec. Once all data is transferred and relinked, I'll open the case and swap out the new drives internally for the old 1TB ones.
Is it fastest to?
1. Use Aperture's "Relocate Masters" fucntion. My question is how much extra overhead is involved with doing this via Aperture?
2. Do a Finder copy of the files, then once they are moved open Aperture and use the "Locate Referenced Files" to reconnect the images to the new HDD.
Has anyone done any speed tests on this? I have about 80,000 refernced images, so I'd like to cut the file transfer time down as much as possible.Select a batch of images, and go into +Locate Referenced Files+ - just the same as doing one at a time. Match up one image from your batch with the file and then, instead of hitting the <Reconnect> button, hit the <Reconnect All> button.
Do a small batch initial until you get the hang of it, and then make a bigger selection and go and have a cup of tea...

Help - exporting projects, referenced files, tiff or jpg? etc...
I have a tricky dilemma and would appreciate work-flow advice!
- I have one master Aperture library on my MacBook Pro
- I have two 20GB projects on an external hard drive - 40GB total - some of the files are RAW and some are JPG.
- I only have 14GB of free space on my MacBook Pro.
What I want to have is just one Aperture library located on my MacBook with ALL master files externally referenced on the external hard drive. Given the file size problem, I know I can
- create a new Aperture Library on the external drive
- import the projects
- then export VERSIONS and save critical adjustments
- OR I can move the MASTERS into a new folder and re-import, but then I'd loose critical adjustments, right?
So how do I get the adjusted images from the 2 PROJECTS into the Aperture library on my MacBook Pro with no loss of quality?
I could:
- create new library on external drive
- import projects
- export versions (at what export setting?)
- open original library on MacBook
- import as referenced files
but if this is my only option... then what is the BEST export setting to use? TIFF 16-BIT?
any other options? am i missing anything?

- seanKeep your existing Library on your MBP and use Referenced Masters. Relocate your Masters to external drives.

I really need help with this quick. The RAW files are in .cr2 format.as a last resort ...
this is the update that added support for 1000d ... however the 3 releases post this should have it too ...

but you can roll back your raw compatibility and see if that works ... then progressively go forward to current and see if/where the problem lies ...

Can any help with my Xcode download issue?

Can anyone help with my Xcode issue? I downloaded it the other day but it is currently stuck saying waiting. I found this advice online http://scheyeniam.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/how-to-revive-mac-app-store-when-its.ht ml and it seemed simple enough. However it tells me to go into activity monitor and quite 'storeagent'. The issue is that there is no process called storeagent. I have tried quitting other processes but it doesn't seem to be working.
Does anyone know of a solution to stop the download saying 'waiting' and to get it started?
ThanksMost likely it is downloading, although the App Store doesn't show the download progress. I had the same problem yesterday when I did the upgrade. It eventually finished, and it's quite a large download, so it might take hours, depending on your internet connection.
If you open the Launchpad, and locate the XCode application icon, it should show a download/install progress, if you want to verify that it's actually doing something. Otherwise, just leave the App Store running, and it should eventually finish. -
Help with writing .bashrc file
I would like help with writing a .bashrc file.
The only thing I want right now is colored output and slashes for directories like what "ls -GF" does -- for each new terminal window.
Can you guys give me a hand?

You can get Apple's "ls" command to always output color with the following in your .bashrc:
export CLICOLOR=""
You can have an effect on the colors used with settings like the following:
export LSCOLORS="gxfxcxdxbxegedabafacad"
I have a color prompt in my bash startup scripts, bashrc.tgz. If you unpack the tarball in the root of your home directory, the files will be put in a ~/Library/init/bash directory. The file named "prompt" sets the color prompt string.

Help with transferring music files from my Maxtor external HD
Can anyone please help? I have been using Windows based PCs for a majority of my life. I recently purchased a Macbook. I have thousands of songs saved on a Maxtor external hard drive. I recently connected the HD to my Macbook and was able to successfully copy over all of the photos I have saved and only few of the audio files. I checked the audio files are saved in itunes format. Why can I not copy all of my music over? Please help!
You could try something like this, if you haven't thought of it already. On the PC side make a new folder, probably at the top level, or perhaps next to the one folder that you could see on the Mac side. Or maybe inside the one folder you can see on the Mac side. Maybe create a new file in it, such as a simple text file. Then see if the new folder and file can be seen on the Mac side. If so, go back to the PC side and try copying one of the mp3 files that couldn't be seen into that new folder. Also, move one mp3, as distinct from copying. Back to the Mac side, see if you can see them.
Now, if you could see the new text file, but can't see the copied mp3, that implies the problem is somehow with the mp3 files. Or the folders they are in.
If you couldn't see the new folder, then the problem isn't the files, but (I guess) something obscure and arcane about the filesystem.
Hopefully, the new folder and its contents will be visible on the Mac side, in which case the path forward should be clear.
Do you have an extremely large number of song files in a single folder? Grasping at straws, but maybe the Mac has some dumb limit that's smaller than the equivalent limit on the PC side. I've never heard of such a thing, but when things are weird, it's a good time to think of oddball possibilities...
