Help with Aperture

Right now I only use Aperture to edit RAW files and export finished images to iPhoto for viewing purposes. Is it possible to have Aperture libray located on an external drive? is it possible to have multiple library?
In your opinion, which one is better for viewing and slide show purposes? Aperture or iPhoto?

Yes, your library can be located on an external
drive. Drag the library to the selected drive and it
will make a copy. Then go to preferences and select
choose and navigate to the new preferred location and
select. Yes you can have more than one library, but
Apple can only see oner at a time. You simply select
the one you want to work with using the methodology I
gave earlier. Aperture is far better at viewing and
managing your images. I also prefer the slideshow
feature.

but..... I can't get slideshow in Aperture to play with music like iPhoto. Is there a way to do it? sorry... I just got Aperture a week ago

  • Help with Aperture 3 printing to Epson R1800 please

No I haven't got the wrong forum, I think I will get the best answer here. I am a fully paid up member of the Lightroom 2 club and like to use both as I am sure others here do.
I cannot get a good print from Aperture 3, there is always a slight magenta colour cast. Prints from Lightroom and CS4 are perfect! And yes all settings are correct, I am not a beginer at this. This is with custom Permajet paper profiles and with Colormunki profiles. And as I have said prints from Lightroom and CS4 using a digital dog test print are spot on.
I remember back in earlier versions of Lightroom printing to the R1800 was problematic and the only way to get round this was to go into the ColorSync Utility and and under Devices and then the default Epson Media type, change the Current Profile to the paper profile that you wished to use. It now seems that this is also the only solution for A3. Doing this will give me an identical print to LR and CS4.
Now was this a problem with Lightroom or the R1800 driver? I am using the latest driver V6.23.  Also I am using Aperture 3.0.2 and OSX 10.6.3.
I would be grateful for any help.

    Hi Ian,
I am glad to hear you're getting good prints from LR and CS4. I am not aware of any outstanding issues with print color management in Lightroom (the print path is pretty solid and conforms to the OS requirements, and will perform correctly as long as the driver also conforms to the OS requirements; many recent drivers do, some older ones do not).
FYI, I understand you feel that there are forum participants here who may be able to help answer your question with Aperture. Though that may indeed be the case, that does not make it an appropriate use of this forum. (As an analogy, many forum participants here are also well-qualified to answer Photoshop questions, but Photoshop questions should be directed to the Photoshop forum, instead of here.)

  • Help with Aperture 1.5 & OSX Snow Leopard

Using iMac w/intel core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, over 100GB of HD left.
Just upgraded to Snow leopard, getting ready to move up to LION (after I get an additional 1GB of RAM).
Discovered my Apert. 1.5 can not be used with OSx SL 10.6.8 and need Apert.2. or 3.
Since I already have AP 2 on hand, I'll be using 2.1 + upgrades.
    My questions are:
1.Will AP2, once installed & updated, recognize my pics in 1.5?
    2. Will they auto transfer to AP 2 or do I have to manually move them.
    3. If manual is required, how do I accomplish this without being able to open 1.5?
I checked Finder and under Ap library I can see my folders and individual pics.
Could I simply drag Finder's AP1.5 Library folder into the folder for 2.x or into
         2.x once opened?
I do have a external back-up of my HD but it's an older copy and would lose my new stuff (yep, lesson learned).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    George

When you start the new Aperture on the old library Aperture should tell you the library needs to be upgraded and offer to do it. You can upgrade the library or quit.
Make sure you have a good working backup of your library before you upgrade it. While it normally goes ok it might not. Plus if for whatever reason you need to go back to the old version of Aperture there is no way to downgrade the library.
Let me just comment on your system, even though you didn't ask about that. 1GB of ram is way to little to have and expect any decent performance from Aperture (or you system for that matter). Even 2gb is at the bottom end of what is acceptable.
Don't know which iMac you have but I believe all intel iMac's were able to go up to at least 4gb of ram. If that is the case then I would strongly recommend you go to 4, 8 would be even better.  Once you put Lion on you'll really feel it.
    Just a thought, good luck.

  • Need help with Aperture library duplicating all 'Albums' under 'Projects' library

Fairly new to Aperture but I've tried to search many times for solutions to this issue.
Scenario:  In the Library, I have 3 albums under the 'Albums' view at the bottom that I created.  They were never associated with a project so they were always kept down here.  This I believe is normal.  What is not normal is that this morning the same 3 albums started showing up in an Albums folder under one of my projects in the  'Project' view above it.  At first when I clicked on the project it showed the entire library (+20k photos) despite saying only 14 images were in this folder.  I fixed this by moving the 14 photos into a different project with a different name.  But the Albums folder remains.  It is a direct mirror of the albums below (same name, same photos), and when I delete an album from the 'Projects' view it deletes the same album below.  Same thing if I remove a picture from the album above, it does it below.  I have other albums under specific projects that do not show up under 'Albums' view in the Library.  Again I belive this is correct.
Making this more frustrating is that I can't just simply move or delete the duplicate Albums above and it is under a 'Project' that doesn't make any sense (e.g., under a Project named 'Travel' but all albums are related to 'Birthday Parties').  I tried creating new albums and then deleting the old ones, but then it actually removes the 'Album' section of my library and I don't know how to get it back as I'd still like to keep that functionality.
I have also repaired and rebuilt the database twice with no improvement.  One other point is that I believe this is officially an iPhoto library, but this version of Aperture and iPhoto supposedly allows for sharing without any issues.  I tried repairing via iPhoto as well, but no luck there.
Can anyone help or suggest solutions?  Thanks in advance.

The sections in the Library Inspector have hidden controls to Hided or Show them. The controls will appear, if you hover the mouse close to the right border of the Inspector panel. There you can toggle the visibility of the different sections on and off.
The whole Subsection (ALBUM in ALL CAPS) is gone, no remant left (so no Hide/Unhide button).  I can hide the PROJECTS, SHARED, RECENT, ETC, but ALBUMS is again gone.
Just to be better able to understand what is happening in your library:
At first when I clicked on the project it showed the entire library (+20k photos) despite saying only 14 images were in this folder.
This looks to me, like your albums were "Smart Albums" and not regular albums.   Regular albums don't change the contents, when you open them for browsing. Or reflect changes in other library items.
What do the icons of your "albums" look like? Is there a "gears" icon on it? Then your album is a smart album, and I'd try to update the smart settings for the album/
Nope.  No gears and I've never used a Smart Album.  They were all part of my old iPhoto library but that import was done 2-3 months ago and this issue just started today.  Right now the Album is just a folder under PROJECTS, with each individual Album beneath having icons that look like two photos stacked (i.e., normal albums).  Also, when I click on the main Album's folder it reads 'TopLevelAlbums' as the header on the top of the main section.  When I click on any other project, folder, or individual album it just reads the same name as the header....this was the first clue to me that something was wrong...besides the ALBUM folder having +20k pictures in it.
Aperture 3.5.1 .  I'm going to try creating the new library and see if it fixes it.  Thanks for the help.

  • Help with Aperture 2

If anyone can help me with this I will be forever grateful! I am trying to use a free texture I found online on a photo of mine in Aperture 2. I have tried everything, but cannot figure out how to use the texture on the picture! HELP! I'm sure there is some crazy easy way and I am just not computer or program savvy enough to know what it is. Ok I'm rambling, if anybody has an insight into this and can help please let me know!

In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.

  • Help with Aperture 3

    Hi,
I'm very new to Aperture 3 but have been trying to read up on how to use it. However, recently every time my mouse is over a picture it automatically give me my photo/camera info regarding that picture (ie name of picture, aperture, file size and such) as a little translucent box. This is very annoying. Does anyone know how to turn this off. I'm usually in split view with filmstrip on bottom. I've search and looked into the program but do not know how to turn it off. Please help!
    Thank you.

    Sure it works...

  • Need help with Aperture, Leopard and G5 1.8

I need some help and advice. After doing a clean install of Leopard, I can not open up Aperture (On my G5 1.8). At first it crashed after about 10-15 seconds. So I reinstalled Aperture and now it opens but all I see is Aperture in the finder and NO Aperture window just the desktop.
I've gone through all the discussions for the past couple weeks and have tried everything that has been suggested. Reinstall, delete plist, replace Prokit, etc etc. But one thing I have noticed is that I seem to be the only one having this particular problem. The transition went fine on my new Macbook Pro.
SO, I'm open to any suggestions that anybody has. Thanks much in advance!!

Did you do all the software updates? Aperture will not start on my macbook pro. I recently updated to leopard, then did a brand new aperture install. It keeps crashing aperture after the welcome marquee no matter which choice I select.
Ran a software update, and it says 130mb download required to get aperture up to date.
Hopefully that will fix me. Maybe running software update until you show fully updated will work for you?
I installed aperture as admin, if the software update trick does not work, I will try to run aperture one time while logged in as admin to make sure it is not a problem with getting a registration key to update for a first run of the app. If that was it, I will get back to you. I think a lot of people with macs just run as admin all the time to save hassles when installing software.
    Best wishes.

  • Help with Aperture/T2i/iMovie/large file ( 2GB) issue.

I am having an issue with a very large file (3.99 GB) that I shot with my Rebel T2i. The file imports fine into Aperture, but then it isn't recognized at all by iMovie. I found out that iMovie can only handle files that are 2 GB or smaller.
So now, I am trying to figure out how to chop my mega file neatly into a pair of 2GB halves. When I use the trim function, that does not seem to do the trick -- this may be a case of Aperture's non-destructive nature actually working against me.
Does anyone have a solution for this? My intuition suggests that this may be a job for QuickTime Pro -- but I wasn't sure how that works now that we all have QuickTime X.
    Much appreciated.

The file may well be in the wrong format, can you tell us more about it. See This

  • I need help with Aperture 2

I received a message that said my Aperture 2 library was unstable and needed to be restored, which I did from an external back up.  After the library and projects were restored, my project national parks was missing.  I restored the library a second time and had the same result with no national parks project.  I have needed to restore the library in the past with complete success.  I reviewed the contents of the Vault in the external hard drive and did not see the national parks project.  I also reviewed all of the images in the restored library and didn't see the images there, as well.  I back up the library on the external hard drive regularly. Since I don't have access to the images in the vault, is there anyway of getting back the images from my national parks project.

Thanks for your response.  My profiles are located within color sync utility as you can see here:
These profiles do not respond to clicking and dragging.  Since they are all in one place, more or less, I'm reluctant to make further attempts to relocate them.  Accessing the CMYK profile is the first difficult experience I've encountered with this arrangement.  I have never needed the CMYK profile until recently, and that need has now past.  However, it remains a mystery to me as to why it does not appear with all the others on the menu of export choices in Aperture 2, or on the menu of profile assignment choices in the Preview application (where again all the other profiles are listed as choices).  I'm beginning to think my current set up will permit me to view an image that was created in CMYK space, but does not easily assign, or convert to that space.  I don't face these restrictions with all the others, so it remains a curious circumstance for me.  I anticipate upgrading my computer and software in the near future which might alleviate this issue altogether.  Again, many thanks for your attention to this matter.  The reach of this community is astounding.

  • Help with Aperture on new computer

I have bought Aperture a long time ago (version 1). When updated to new version I have bought that too. Had Aperture version 3 on my old iMac and transferred that to my new iMac. When I start Aperture it ask for serialnumber. I have serialnumber from the upgrade but that doesnot seems to work. I have wiped out everthing on my old computer and sold it, so I cannot check for any other serialnumber.
I tried to buy Aperture again, but it says "Already installed" and I did not get any new serial numer that way.
    What to do?

After reinstalling Aperture on a new Mac you need to enter all serial numbers, beginning with the first version you bought, then the upgrade serial numbers. If you no longer have the Aperture 1 and 2 serial numbers, contact Apple for a replacement serial number.
See this support article: Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers
If you want to buy Aperture again, but cannot, because it is already installed, deinstall it, then try to buy from the AppStore, but with a proof of purchase Apple should provide you with a replacement serial number.

  • Help with Aperture & Automator

Hi,  I'm fairly new to Aperture and I'm hopeful that someone can help me automate a process that will make my life a lot easier.
I regularly save my original photographs into a folder on my desktop, the folder containing sometimes up to a thousand  6MB sized photos.  I want to copy the contents of the folder that contains these photographs, resize them to 25% and then add a preset sharpening of Intensity 0.39 & Radius 4.69 in Aperture.
I have set up Automator as follows:
Copy Finder Items ( where I manually select all the images and drag them to the Automator app that I have named Resize & Sharpen )
    Scale Images by Percentage (25%)
    Import Photos (Aperture)
Apply Image adjustment Preset  Sharpen (where my preset is Intensity 0.39 & Radius 4.69)
The process seems to work fine, in that it is copying, scaling & importing to Aperture but does not seem to apply the sharpening preset.
Any help would be really appreciated

Well, here we go, logging on & back on again appears to have done the trick - thanks.
My original workflow looks like this:
and now when I go back to it I'm getting an error message as follows:
and when it opens the sharpen aspect of the workflow changes to:
quick fixes > auto enhance as follows:
I'm obviously doing something wrong but I have no idea what, and as I posted earlier any help to sort this out will be greatluy appreciated.
    In anticipation,
    Colin

I havent changed anything to my system in the past 24 hours so I dont know why it all of sudden stopped working....
I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the software and still doesnt work.

It looks like your Plugin Manager is wrong. Not sure how it could have changed unless something else was installed between the first launch of 3.1.3 and the latest launch. There is a KB about the Final Cut Express installing an older Plugin then Aperture, so that can cause the issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3528
You might try to reinstall Lion.

  • Hi looking for a bit of help with Aperture 3.1.2

I have a digital image which has been taken in RAW. Is it possible to remove a unwanted brackground building from the image , can i aslo replace it with a different background.
    Manythanks

That will depend on the image, how difficult that will be.
You can replace parts of an image by copying details from other parts of the image using the clone brush. This works well, if the item you want to replace is isolated in front of a background with not much detail.
If the background has plenty of structure close to the object you want to remove an external editor would be preferable, for example Inpaint is easy to use and fills in the space left by removed objects nicely, also PhotoShop Elements is good for this kind of retouche.

  • Problem with Aperture 3.6 Can't open Preferences

I had a problem with Aperture 3.6; opened a new Library from the Vault, now cannot open Aperture Preferences. When I attempt to open preferences I get a very thin vertical line about 1 ½ inches long?? Any fixes for this/  Thanks, Vic

Try to delete the Aperture preferences as described here at this link:
Get help with Aperture 3 - Apple Support
    Steps to reset preference settings
To reset your Aperture user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
    Quit Aperture.
In the Finder choose "Go to folder" from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field. Press the Go button.
Remove the "com.apple.Aperture.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Restart your computer if you're using OS X Mavericks.
The locations of your Aperture libraries are stored in the preference file listed above. If you have stored your library outside the default location of  ~/Pictures/Aperture Library, make a note of where the library is before deleting the Aperture preferences file. If you have more than one library, you can bring up a dialog to choose which one to load by pressing Option immediately after you open Aperture.

  • Help getting started with Aperture

Hello, Can anyone advise please. I am getting an imac, and have decided to work with Aperture & NIK plug-ins, and also change from NEF files from my D90 to DNG (I have been using Capture NX2, but have run out of patience with Nikon, and can't risk there being no future with Nikon software).
I understand, or think I do, that I can change NEFs to DNGs within Aperture, and these are converted to TIFFs automatically after work in NIK (kindly correct me if I am wrong).   Also that Aperture keeps the original DNG, which holds any work done in Aperture, plus a TIFF copy that includes the sum of the work done in both Aperture & NIK
3 questions please if I may:
    1) I wonder if I should do all possible work in Aperture first, so most is in the DNG, and only then open with NIK plug-in(s), at which time the TIFF is produced. Does this really matter, and is there any benefit/need to do any work, such as sharpening/noise reduction in NIK first, or could this sort of thing be done after working in Aperture - just keep hearing of importance of staying RAW as much as possible, so worried about going straight to TIFF and then doing ALL the editing in TIFF format
    2) In nikon View/NX2 I have been used to (and like) seeing my folder tree. I currently make folders for each different location I shoot at, Then sub-folders titled with date yymmdd and location name again + numbered 001,002 etc.
Could/should I either a) have Aperture do this so I can easilly find/see my folders, and /or b) and/or copy my photos to manually made folder tree on my desk top or wherever on mac hard drive, and then copy or move from there into Aperture (or can Aperture be just 'pointed' to the folder tree
    3) Can you suggest best way for me to move files from either view nx/nx2, or from external hard drive where I have copies of my NEFS
I appreciate your help, so I can get going with Aperture and my imac, Thanks

No you need to convert to DNG before importing into Aperture. But way are you converting, doesn;t Aperture handle the RAW files from your camera? I'm pretty sure the D90 is supported.
When you edit an image using an external editor or plug-in Aperture creates a separate 'master' image and sends that to the external program. I the case of NIK plug-ins I do believe they work in TIFF. When the external program is done that 2nd image is stored in the Aperture library.
To question 1, I would do the initial work in Aperture and then work in the external program.  I figure I want the best possible image to work on with the external app.
For question 2 you will need some time to learn the layout and workings of the Aperture library. You will need to decide if you will be using a managed or referenced scheme for your masters. There are many good posts here on this subject. Look for posts by Kirby Krieger specifically he's covered these questions in depth.
Not sure about 3 are you asking how to get your images into Aperture? Or something else?
    good luck
