Help with Audio Playback While Recording

I am an aspiring sound engineer and I am having a problem with recording in Audition 3.0 that I need help with. When i record vocals, the sound wave plays back in the speakers/headphones with like a 1.5 second delay after it is recorded. It really throws off the artists I am working with when they are trying to record vocals. How do i kill headphone/speaker playback while someone is recording?

There are problems with a lot of internal soundcards in a lot of laptops, and these seem to be so many and various that all you can do is use trial and error and hope for the best.
External soundcards should cure any problem, but you may have to look into what else is running on the laptop, as so much is integrated, and some machines seem to have audio problems caused by wireless or other network adaptors etc.
As I said, I use oldish Edirol and Tascam usb units. The Tascam has a known fault (noise when using a guitar channel at the same time as phantom powering a mic on the other channel) which I can live with, and I would hope has been solved in later and current versions. The Edirol is fine. I use 2 units to give me the connections I want (ie one has jacks, the other phono plugs, and different size headphone sockets). Both these have asio and wdm drivers and work fine with AA 3.0 here. More modern devices will be usb2 and will presumably provide more channels or higher sampling rates, but these are fine. Others will be more up to date than me, but I would think anything from Tascam, Edirol, Echo Audio and I think most m-audio models should be fine. Just be wary of anything from Creative Labs. I, too, have had bad experiences with one of their products (it drew too much current from the usb port on a couple of the laptops so I never got as far as to find whether it had asio drivers working or not). But others will be more up to date than I am.
I just went onto ebay over the years and kept bidding on sensible looking devices until I got ones at the right price, but it probably is better to buy new if you can afford it.
Sorry I can't give a more definite answer.

I would like to record audio (from a radio) and be able to play it back while it is recording or at a later time. I can do this with DVD-RAM DVD recorder but would like to do it in a simpler manner.

    LineIn might do, or Soundflower.

  • Help with Audio for Premiere Project

Working on a lengthy project and need some help with audio which is not my specialty!
I am recording using a Sony EX1r and a wireless lav mic,     OK.  Here is what is happening.
When I import the clip into project I get Audio from the left speaker.   If I burn a DVD and playback on home player with surround sound, I get audio out of just the left speaker which makes sense.    SO I go to Premier and use "Fill Left" which fixes the audio on my computer and get sound from left and right speakers.    The odd thing is that when I play this version back from DVD on the surround sound system, the audio now only comes from the CENTER speaker.  I dont get anything out of left OR the right speaker so it sounds hollow.
I am sure I am missing something obvious so please be kind.
Is there an easy way to get my audio to come out of Left, Center, and Right speakers (and rear for that matter) ???
    Thank you
    Ted

    Bill,
The DVD player is a Sony BluRay and the receiver is an Onkyo AV receiver HT-R380.
My thinking is that it is something that I am doing wrong inside Premiere vs something that the DVD player or receiver is doing.    My final product will need to play on a variety of DVD players so I need to get it right.
It just seems odd that my default output DVD provides sound to the left speaker but then removes it when I fill Left.
Am I setting up my audio tracks wrong?  Or should I being doing something with a 5.1 track???
    Thanks
    Ted

  • Playback while recording question - help!

    Hi, all!
Just started using GB, so forgive me if this has been addressed, but I'd really appreciate the help. Say I have two tracks - I record one guitar track, then I want to record vocals while listening to that guitar track (to sing along). However, when I do this, obviously, the microphone for vocals picks up the guitar track being played on my computer, thus making the guitar louder and the vocals buried beneath what is essentially now TWO tracks of guitar. Is there a way to play back a track only in headphones while recording a new track to it?
    Thanks so much!

Yes. Plug headphones into the computer, just like the pros do it. Just make sure the built-in output is selected in GB Prefs>Audio/MIDI.

  • Help with Audio Device Playback

Hoping someone out there can help. Before I updated to iTunes 7, I played back all of my iTunes music through some studio monitors connected to a Digidesign Mbox audio interface. Since upgrading, I cannot get clean audio using this device. When I select "Digidesign Mbox: Chan 1-2" as the default sound playback device in my QuckTime preferences, playing a song in iTunes gives me a garbled sound--almost sounds like a CD that's skipping. Can anybody help with a solution? I hate having to listen to my tunes through two tiny cheap computer speakers!
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

I have the same problem. I get the garbled "Skipping" sound when I use the new version of iTunes. The only way I have to get around it is an old version of iTunes 6 I have saved - it has the same version of Quick Time Attached that was good (then) and should work with the WaveDriver. I have an MBOX 2 and it sounds GREAT.
It really is bad that Apple has this "New, Great" iTunes but it won't work with the existing hardware. I can go from my Sound Card out to my Monitors, but the sound quality is bad. And it is so much easier to just use the MBOX volume adjuster - it is very handy.
Apple, please fix this problem. I want to download DRM free music but iTunes 7.2 does not work with MBOX 2.

  • Cant hear song playback while recording with external USB Interface Mic in Garageband

    Hi there
There must be something wrong with my settings in Gargaeband/Mac Sound Settings.
I have Garageband 9 (V5.1) running a song I have already recorded using a USB keyboard.
I want to record using my external mic and my USB Audio Interface, so
I select New Track> Real Instrument
I plug in my Yamaha Audiogram 3 USB AUdio Interface and I get a pop up stating
"Garageband is scanning your system for audio devices, and has detected a device named "USB Audio Codec"
If you want to use this device do not disconnect it during the scanning process.
Do you want to use this devise No/Yes."
I select Yes and INPUT SOURCE changes from
    Mono 1 (Built-in Microphone)
    to
    Mono 1 (USB Audio CODEC)
I can see the signal lights lighting up on the audiogram 3 when I talk into the mic, so theres no problem there.
Also when I hit record I can record audio using the mic, and can see the levels (and the audio wave I am creating being drawn on the screen) but I cannot hear the track itself when I am recording using the mic. Nor can I hear the track or the new mic recorded audio AFTER I have hit stop.
The only way to hear the song again with the newly recorded mic track is to unplug the Audiogram 3 (Then I get another Pop-up stating
"The audio device "USB Audio CODEC" has been disconnected!
Do you want to switch to Built-in Audio or quit Garageband?"
    I select USE BUILT-IN AUDIO)
Then the input source changes back to
    Mono 1 (Built-in Microphone)
And I can hear the track again.
So my problem as you can see if that I cant hear the track while recording using the microphone with the Audiogram 3.
But I can record video with audio using the audiogram 3 USB Audio Inteface and mic using photobooth when I select change Sound>Input to USB Audio Codec in system preferences
It therefore assume it must be a problem with the internal audio settings of the mac/garageband.
    Can anyone advise?
    thanks!

In order to hear yourself while you are recording, you need to set Monitor to "ON" under the Track Info panel.
Also, what are your sound output settings?  It sounds like you haven't selected the right output source.
If your speakers or headphones are plugged into your audio interface, then you need to go into Preferences -> Audio/MIDI and select your audio interface under Output as well as Input.  If your speakers or headphones are built-in or plugged directly into your computer, then you need to select Built-In under Output.
I have a sneaky feeling that you are in the latter scenario, and that when you plug in your audio interface Garageband is automatically switching both Input and Output over to your interface, which means no sound output as long as the interface is plugged in.

  • Recording with audio playback slowed down 65% what speed do I need to speed the video back up to to get it into real time?

Ive recorded a test video with audio/music playback slowed down 65% what speed do I need to speed the video back up to to get it into "real" time?
If I'd slowed the audio playback down 50% I would make the video 100% faster.
If I'd slowed the audio playback down 100% I would make the video 200% faster.
So its obviously somewhere inbetween speeding up by 100-200%
Sorry but its melting my brain today and I cant remember the calculation.
    thanks

    hey all
Thanks for the advise on this. I will explain a little more what am have/am intending to do.
I have used Audacity to slow the song down (Effect>Change Tempo)
Audacity will allow me slow the original song down by up to 99% (Or anything in-between up to 3 decimal places)
Unfortunately I am working to a time restraint of 12 minutes per clip (as my DSLR will only allow up to a 12 minute clip).
The song at normal speed is 4 minutes long.
Originally I slowed the audio down by 50% (Making the audio 8 minutes long), lip synced to it using a rasta blaster and recorded the video using my DSLR at 720p 50fps.
I then imported the video and audio I had been lip syncing to into FCPX.
I sped up the video by x2 (equivalent to speeding it up 200%)
    Retime>Fast 2X
Layered the PROPER normal speed audio back over the top and all was fine.
    Test video complete.
(You can ignore the 65% slowed down audio I mentioned earlier if you like, that was just an example of a slower than 50% audio test)
Firstly what I really want to do is to be able to slow the AUDIO down as much as possible (But still within the restraints of only being able to adjust FCPX retiming within a whole 1 percentage in the final video edit), but have the AUDIO of the song as near to/under 12 minutes as possible.
I will then re-record the video again to this new slowed down audio.
Secondly I will speed up the video from 12 minutes to 4 minutes.
Thirdly I will layer the correct 100% Normal AUDIO on top.
The FINISHED video should then look like everyone is wizzing around at high speed but the guitar playing/lyrics look like they are being played/sung at the normal speed.
Whatever happens (due to the constraints of FCPX) I need the calculations to work so that FCPX is retimed exactly to a whole 1% for the final video to sync up correctly.
So what I need to know in a nut shell is:-
What calculation do I use to work out the percentage to slow a 4 minute song down to a 12 minute song?
What calculation do I use to work out the percentage of how much I need to then speed the 12 minute video up to turn it back into a 4 minute video?
    My mind is melting

  • Help with audio engineering

    Hi,
I'm a little bit out of my depth here.  I do basic editing on FCP X and I have some audio that was recorded on a digital camera in 2000 that needs some work. There's a conversation going on in the background that you can't really hear and I'd like to be able to boost it up over the noise in the foreground.  I've played around with all the audio capabilities in FCP X and can't isolate the correct frequency in order to boost the conversation.
Is something like this even possible?  If so, do I need different software in order to do it?  Or do I just find an audio engineer to do this for me?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

Have you tried Multipressor?  You can isolate a band of audio and compress it while de-emphsizing all the other bands. (If you're not familiar with the plugin, you should do a search on youtube for 'multipressor logic'. The plugin in Logic is exactly the same as the one in FCPX.)

  • Problems with audio playback in 10.3.9

hi all- I've got a really weird problem with the audio playback of my G5; when I try and play an mp3 (in Itunes or in the finder window as a preview) the playback "stutters" arbitrarily. This goes for any mp3 - Has anyone come accross this type of problem before?
I've run checks both with my external soundcard (a motu 828 firewire card) and apple's internal sound, but this seems to be some sort of software problem.
HELP!!! I'm tearing the (little) hair I have out!!!
    thanks

Right.. 10.3.x doesn't automatically pull down mobile users' files. It only creates a new local account on the machine, but gives you the control over the account through WGM.
BTW- if you want to sync the ~/Library folder, you will need to use 10.4.3 Client (I think) and above.

  • Help with Audio Monitoring

    Hey everyone.
I am new to both Mac's and Logic, but not to audio recording. I have a question that seems very simple, but yet I cannot seem to find an answer in the user guide, or the Sittter Pro Training Series books. I
I've configured my exernal MIDI devices to Logic (I'm using the Microlite interface). They show in the enviroment, and I've recorded MIDI data. I've played back MIDI data.
Lets say I have recorded a MIDI drum part using an external drum machine. In order to hear the audio output, after recording, I hook up the audio outs of the drum machine, to my MIDI interface (MOTU Traveler) and I assign an audio track in Logic to receive the audio signal. And here is where it gets fishy.
I have to hit the record button in Logic in order to hear audio, as the MIDI date is triggering my external drum machine. But what if, say, I want to record a mic'd source (or anything for that matter), but also need to monitor the drum machine audio triggered by my recorded MIDI data? I don't want to record the audio from the drum machine, I just want Logic to trigger it...as I need to hear the beat during recording.
    I know I'm missing something.....
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi
You shouldnt need to put the drum machine audio into record to hear it. The Motu traveller should be able to route the audio from the drum machine to the outs 1-2 of the Motu unit.
To do this use Cuemix - should come with the motu software. This allows you to monitor any hardware you have without necessarily going into the software program and recording it just to hear it.
I that doesnt help, if you have a small amplifier, plug the drum machine into that. The midi from Logic will trigger the drum machine - all you are needing is an amp to hear it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot playback while recording

While recording a show, I cannot go back AT ALL.  It just will not work.  I have to start the entire program over using Play to get back to where I was in order to go back at all.  This is ridiculous.  I have rebooted the box a number of times.  I will not totally reset the box because the last time that was done, it wiped out all of my settings and favorites (even though tech support said it wouldn't).
Is the only solution to this a new box? I don't want to go to the trouble of getting a new box and discover I have the same annoying problem.

Replacing the box would fix troubles caused by physical issues. This is not caused by a physical problem. This is a software function. We would need to reprogram the box. The reprogram will cause personalized settings and favorites to be lost. If you would like to go through with this, please send me a private message.

  • I'm stupid! help with audio in port and fender telecaster

    hi there!
    I'm new to garageband.
i would like to record my fender telecaster electric guitar right from the audio input on my g4 powerbook.
i heard that it can be done with out buying usb input recording devices. (also no i have limited $$$. 2 little kids)
can i just plug the 1/4 plug right into the audio in port?
i know if i go through my Marshall Amp directly in to the audio in port, i'll fry my sound card.
Can this be done without usb devices?

Well, at least you got a Fender
No, I am afraid you are gonna need a pre amp of some sort to record your guitar. The G5 iMac has some kind of built in pre amp, but that is the only one we have heard about. If you Marshall has a line out, you can use that, but NOT the speaker out! If you like the way your Marshall sounds, and I assume it is a master volume model, then you should just mic it at whatever volume you can get away with playing where you record. Use something like a Shure SM57 and get yourself a decent audio interface. My guess is that if you have a Tele and a Marshall, once you get started, you'll never want to stop, so just get what you need and be done with it
Some other things to consider is that your hard drive on the PB is a slow drive. To get lots a tracks flowing, you are going to do a lot better with an external firewire drive (7200 RPM) just for your music.
You can get a decent USB device such as I have, the Tascam US-122, or if you can, spend the extra cash and a get a firewire interface such as the Presonus Firebox. I get along fine so far with my US-122 at about half the price of the firewire. I don't record my guitar direct and use the built in amp sims, though. I find them not as good as I can get micing my amps. And lately, I started using the Vox ToneLab for silent recording. I just leave it connected all the time, and when I want to record, I just turn it on, and plug in and start recording.
There is some thing called a Guitar Plug or something like that, that claims to allow you to record without a pre amp, but I really don't see how it can boost the signal to line level without a pre amp. Plus, with your slow drive, and using the amp sims, you are gonna bog down pretty quick, I'd think. The amp sims along with the effects presets for the basic guitar sounds are pretty CPU intense. Your best bet for good clean recording, is to get a mic, an interface, and mic that amp!
And do check out HangTime's FAQ page. That can save you a lot of frustration.

  • Help with audio clipping

    Hi,
I'm very unfamiliar with the audio filters in FCP. I recorded a vioce using a mic and the voiceover tool, however some of my words get 'clipped' and it makes a annoying tick noice. Which filter and what setting are best used to eliminate that?
    Thanks!!

The best remedy for clipping audio is re-recording at the proper levels. Once audio is clipped, its usually toast.
