Help with back up to disc

I've purchaced some songs and I would like to back them up. I've never had a problem with before until now.
I did everything that I was suppose to. Put in a new disc and each time it looks like it is going to burn but it ends up cancelling the burn and an error message comes on and says there is an unknown error (4880)
Can anyone help with this? I sure would hate to lose my songs.

i found the answer.

  • Help with backing up files and opening from disk image.

I am trying to back up my hard drive so that I can send my PowerBook in for repair. I used disk utility from my Panther install discs to create a disk image of my HD.
The disk image was created successfully and mounts perfectly on my HD. I can open it and open all of my files from the disk image just fine when it is mounted on my PowerBook.
However, when I take it to a different Mac, things start getting sketchy. I can open Word files just fine, but Excel files claim they are read-only and cannot open. I checked the permission back on my PowerBook to see what was up, and the files were read/write for the owner and read-only for groups and others, but they should still open as read-only files right? I even checked the permissions on the Word files to see if there was a difference, but there was no difference.
I can take the external HD back to my PowerBook, remount it, and open everything fine, but then on the other Mac it is a no go.
I need to back this up for when it is out on repair, but I need to know that the files will open in case I need to restore my disk.
    Can anyone help??
BTW, I couldn't find the best forum to post this in, if there is a better one please direct me there...

    solution:
I went into the Apple Store nearby today to send my PowerBook off for repair for a screen issue, and in the process got help with my backing up issue.
It seems all one needs to do is copy the file from the external hard drive to the internal drive.
    It was that simple.

  • Please help with backing up library

OK, this has maybe been addressed before but I'm new here and haven't really found an answer on the forums... My work is saved as monthly projects and I want to export them to an external HD with metadata and adjustments etc but retain a referenced version in my library on my mac. Make sense? If I need to get anything back I can do a quick search and plug in the HD - yes? Trouble is if I export the project as-is I can't reimport referenced files... This is maybe my poor working practice and I'd really appreciate some help with it. I've previously just exported versions then burned DVD's but I'd really like to keep a record of pics on the mac if poss. HELP PLEASE!

Thanks so much for your help with this! It sounds exactly like what I want to achieve. I'm wondering now if I can export my entire library and bring it back in as referenced instead of managed - hopefully someone can advise? Thanks, Craig
You don't need to export you can do it from within Aperture, see *File->Relocate Master*.
Again check out the user manual Apple did a real good job with this one.
And PLEASE, PLEASE, make a complete backup of your Aperture library before trying any of this we are not responsible for lost, missing or mutilated photos

  • How do I add to my iTunes backup that I created with Back Up to Disc?

I backed up my library to 16 DVD's a few months ago. I have added 3 or 4 CD's since then to my library, but I'm not sure which ones or exactly how many. I used the Back Up to Disc in iTunes. How do I add the new ones to my backup if I don't know which ones need to be added?

Since you used the iTunes backup feature, there's an option there to back up only this items added since the last backup was made.

  • Help with backing up files, Toast, restoring comp to factory settings, etc.

    Hello!
My computer (iBook G4, Panther, 10.3.9) has been acting a bit buggy lately, and I have way too much clutter and confusion (I have had this laptop for about three years now and when I first got it I wasn't really organized as far as computers go, so I didn't take good care of my files, I moved things around, things got deleted, etc). I know that you can 'restore to factory settings' which I would love to do, but of course I have to backup all my photos, music, documents, etc.
    So here are my questions:
    1. I have Roxio Toast Titanium, but I cannot figure out where to get the DATA for my song files, and my photo files. I have SO many files that I need to use the data instead of just burning disc after disc...that would take forever and I would only be able to do about 20 songs per disc, and I have something like 1765 songs or something. Anyway, do I just drag my folder that says 'itunes library' to Toast (under the 'data' tab), or do I have to actually find some different file that is purely the data? If so, where do I find that file? (sorry if that made no sense, I'm a little boggled...I've been trying to do this for about two days straight now).
    2. Okay, so I have an up-to-date iPod, and I was wondering if, instead of backing up all the files in my iTunes library, I could just connect my iPod to my comp after I have 'returned to factory settings'. The only reason I ask this is because last time I updated my iPod, there were some song tracks that had been deleted from my library but were on my iPod still, and the computer asked me if I wanted to export those tracks from my iPod to my iTunes library. Does this not work if you have an entire library worthof stuff?
Anyway, my next, much more distant and complicated (ha) questions is this:
I have my iBook G4 Software install discs (one and two). Is that all I need ti install all the apps. again after returning my comp?
Alright, thank you for taking the time to read all that. Thanks for the help!
    -dmillerwhite

    1. Unless you've told iTunes not to copy music you've added to the iTunes library, backing this folder up will back up your entire iTunes library. If applicable, deauthorize the machine before restoring the computer.
    2. This will work with music purchased from the iTunes store, when the computer is authorized to play music purchased from the iTunes store account used to purchase that music. It will not work with music you've gotten from CDs or other sources.
    3. Yes.

  • Need some help with backing up external hard drive using Time Machine

Hi all, I'm trying to work out the best way to back up multiple iPhoto libraries using Time Machine.
At the moment I have got an iMac and Macbook Pro, both of which have an iPhoto library (with different content).  Currently these are not backed up at all.  So what I want to do is back both up to an NAS drive, which I know is straightforward.
What I also want to do is create one iPhoto library on an external hard drive that I can use with my MBP, and then delete the iPhoto library on my MBP to free up some hard drive space (it's running slower and slower and I'm hoping that this might help it run quicker).
So, as I want to have the library on two seperate drives in case one fails, what I want to know is whether I could use Time Machine to back up my external hard drive as well as the internal drive of my MBP?  Also, would I need to have the external drive connected at all times for Time Machine to "see" it?
I hope that makes sense, all I seem to be doing currently is going round and round and can't work out whether what I want to do is possible or not.
    Thanks in advance

If I understand your goal correctly, you're considering using Time Machine as external storage, and it doesn't work that way.  Time Machine keeps around what it can, and older stuff gets flushed as the storage available to Time Machine reaches its lower threshold due to the addition of newer stuff.  When the older stuff gets flushed is not predictable.
It is possible to have several Time Machine backups aimed at the same target (this can be done with Apple Time Capsule, for instance), though you might want to partition the disks to ensure that the intended amount of storage is available.  Different NAS drives have different features here.
NAS is only as fast as your network connection, and that's almost always much slower than the in-box I/O connections; a local disk will be far faster than a NAS disk, just because of the bottleneck that is wired gigabit Ethernet, and most WiFi is slower and sometimes far slower than wired gigabit Ethernet.  FWIW.
If your MacBook Pro is old enough and you have $$ but aren't in a position to spend $$$$$ on a newer model, then consider an in-place drive upgrade.
If your network connection is fast enough to transfer the amount of data you're dealing with in a reasonable time, there are also hosted storage options.
You can use a NAS drive as storage independent of Time Machine, and relocate stuff there.  (You'll still want to have backups of that data, as NAS drives — even NAS with RAID — can still lose files, become corrupted or otherwise ruin your data day.
As for your performance, keeping about 10% or so free on the disks is the local preference, but it's worth reviewing the performance of the whole system — Performance Monitor, Console.app, etc — to see if there's something else going on, or if your system load and personal performance expectations are exceeding what your MacBook Pro can provide.

  • Need help with backed up photos-now cannot view..?

Using iphoto 6, super duper, seagate external hd. Drive has already been set-up and backed up several times-been working well........until.......
Last night, I saw that out of 120gb I have about 5gb left on my G4.!
"decided" to back-up iphotos and "delete" some on my G4 to reserve more space.
Now, if I go to the external and click on pictures folder, I can see all of my originals folders (2002-2008), but when I open iphoto, they are not in iphoto.?
On my G4, it's the same thing, but worse! When I tried to delete my photos, I was holding the apple key and selecting multiple items, then dragging them to the trash.......I'm sure you have done this yourself before, but It drug them a little, then them "dropped" into other places in the same folder-NOT the trash! They are in all different places in the pictures folder, and not in the same places they used to be......!!!
I've read about "re-constructing" the library. Will this work? I do not want to do any more damage. They are there-I know it!
So, I drug the entire library of "originals" back into iphoto, but ALMOST all of the way through (got down to 100 out of 8,000 photos) and got a message that says "an error occured while trying to save your iphoto library. Make sure you have enough hard disk space and that iphoto is able to access the iphoto library folder."
I look at my hd space, and I have about 500mb left....?
What does this mean? I THINK I don't have enough hd space to do it now. What the **** should I do? Getting a little frustrated at this point. I am off tomorrow and want to get it fixed up.
8,000 of my childrens photos is nothing to "play" with. I can't believe I was so stupid with these. These mean the world to me, and I'm pretty sure they are still there. Obviously they are because about 60gb of hd space is being used up with my photos according to the program "what size?" I downloaded to use.
    Where to start?
First, thanks for reading this, and second---could someone help me out some?
Could someone please post a link to help me to correctly partition the seagate external hd, and get these photos backed up?
Also, what is the best way to free up my hd space on my G4? I also have a mini with 60gb of storage if I need additional hd space. In addition, I have an iphone, itouch, imac, 3 nanos, ipod hi-fi,,,,,,,Obviously, I LOVE my Apple products, but don't have enough knowledge to operate them.....kinda sad, huh?

This is the iPhoto '08 forum (version 7.x.x) and you may very well get incorrect answers to questions about other versions - it would be better to post in the iPhoto 6 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1116

  • They stole my hard drive with my original pictures, need help with back up

Someone stole my hard drive in my bag with the pictures I use with Lightroom. I have a clean backup of my original until November last year : the folder is similar of the folder I use in LR. But for the rest, I have a back up of the original pictures in my mac, but I think it's bit messy, because after that I deleted and move and renemae some picture in LR, and I didn't sync the back up folder. The folder is just a back up when I imported my picture in LR for the first time. So, I'm afraid LR won't find all the pictures. I don't really know how to explain better. But I will apreciate some help before started, and I don't want to mess it up. What can I do to find my LR back?

One way to approach this is to reinstate the backup you have as of November, then Import the images since then as a new import (as you'd be using the .lrcat from November, so it won't see any of the more recent as duplicate]. Of course, no edits nor keywords will be associated with those more recent photos, but this might be the way to assure you pick up everything since then.
Sorry about you bad news/luck on the theft. Bummer.

  • I need help with Backing up Music

I need to back up my songs because I got an error message telling me to uninstall and reinstall I-Tunes.  However, when I tried to back up my files on CD's it didn't work right.  Some of the music was garbled........Am I doing something wrong?  Should I choose Audio CD or MP3 CD or Data DVD?   My goal is to make sure I save my music to reinstall on the new version of I-Tunes but, it would be nice to be able to play the CD's in my stereo as well.  Thanks for any help that I receive!

I meant to add that - Back up disc is not anywhere in the Files sections, not under LIbrary, nowhere.

  • Please Help with backing up before I commit suicide

I have an MBA and just bought Time Capsule thought it would be good idea to back up my research studies and to store my important files. I have a BT Home Hub which is connected to the TC by Ethernet. It started backing up but the process was interupted many times. One time the MBA got frozen. The other time it quitted unexpeditely. I have 36.67GB and the highest data backed up was 656MB and the backing up was interrupted. I Left it overnights to back up but without anu success and it seems everytime resume backing up it starts from the scratch not from where it stopped. I have connected my MBA to the TC by Ethernet but the Ethernet ligh in the TC is off. I want to get this **** to back up my MBA as I stored one important file in it and I had to reset it and the file was not saved properly.
I m loosing my temper with this so called TC. I have erased it and i want to start from the scratch and see how it will go.
I want adives on the best quikest way to have it backup my MBA and then after finishing backup I want to set it up to use the maximum of it.
I have in the house 4 laptops including my MBA and I want to access it while away.
    Please help!!
As I speak it started backing up and now it is 1.7MB out of 36.67GB

I am sorry to hear about your trouble. There are so many of us who have been trying very hard to get this device to work with no resolve. I too am in that boat, and I have a tremendous amount of time to work on it. There does not seem to be a way past these simple little error screens that pop up after a 12-14 hour backup,or preparing for 5 hours,or stopping at the very end saying something like backing up 136mb of 136mb,and that runs for endless hours with no backup. Seems to be some pretty common issues but know one seems to know how to fix us. It is broken. It was broken out of the box as far as backups go. Seems to work very well as a wireless router and space heater but backups not a chance it seems as of right now,I wouldn't trust even if it did backup, sure as shootin' we would see the error screens on the other end then!

  • Help with backing up my hard drive

    Hi,
I was considering an upgrade to tiger and want to save my important system files, preferences, etc. However, I don't have enough space on a cd to make a bootable back up. My question is which files/folders should I save in panther so that if I had to reinstall everything I could simply put back my old settings? I am a bit green at this and any help would be appreciated.

The best thing to do would be to get an external firewire drive. Make sure it's able to bootup with Macs (some don't).
Then use a program like the free demo of SuperDuper, to make a bootable clone of your whole machine. Then if something happens, you can bootup on the external and run or repair your Mac. This way you don't have to worry about what or what not too save. I'll all be there.
Make sure you use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread before you clone.
    Cheers!

  • Help with backing up itunes library

I need to transfer my itunes library to a different computer and i wanted to know if backing it up to a disc will back up music, videos, AND apps.  The cmoputer has windows 7

Do you have an external hard drive? If not, you might want to get one. Much easier to back up the library that way...
Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447
If you are just testing, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location.
    Additional info...

  • Help with backing up files on a network volume

Have a Time Capsule and a bridged extreme N router. I share a folder off of the N router (home work, work files, etc.), thus allowing everyone to have access to their files regardless of which machine they are using. However, I can't back up this share folder using Time Machine. I want to write a workflow which copies recently modified files from my shared network folder to a back-up folder on the machine which I back up with Time Capsule on a daily basis.
This seems so logical, I would have thought Apple would have provided for this option.
