Help with broadcast traffic on PIX !!!

Hi,
i have an issue with a UPS software to automatically shut down clients in the event of UPS battery draining completely after a power cut....
we have 3 different subnet on our PIX and the software uses broadcast method to discover clients and list them in the control panel...of course the PIX blicks broadcasts and hence my server control panel cannot 'discover' the clients.
What would you reccoment to pass broadcast traffic from a specific IP to other specific IPs (not all subnet) on the PIX E interfaces !!!! ????
Thanks,
George

Hi Leo,
I am aware of the ip helper commands on the router... i tried looking up the same command for the PIX (im not very familiar with PIXs) and could not find it, and realized that it should not exist....
is there another way around this though... ??? without using something similat to ip helper-directed broadcasts commands ???
Thanks,
George

    From that time we cannot boot PIX.
    I tried to create bootable disk and throught tftp insert newer PIX OS but I see still this output. And PIX still reboots.
    On card with Flash inserted in PIX I see the jumpers. Could someone explain me meaning?
    Any idea...??

    This section describes how to change the PIX Firewall to an earlier version of the software than the version currently running on your PIX Firewall unit. You can only downgrade the PIX Firewall software if your platform supports the earlier version.

  • Will Final Cut Pro X recognize Avid Mojo interfacing with Broadcast Pix?  If so, how do I accomplish this?

    Our church used an HP for 12 years that was refurbished and finally died.  We captured Sunday services for broadcast using Avid Express connected to a Broadcast Pix Switcher via an Avid Mojo with a firewire cable.  This week, I replaced it the HP with a Mac in hopes of using Final Cut Pro to capture and edit video for broadcast.  Will Final Cut Pro X recognize Avid Mojo interfacing with Broadcast Pix?  If so, how do I accomplish this?  Currently I have the mojo connected to the Mac via a firewire adapter through the thunderbolt port.  However, the Mac isn't seeing the mojo or the cameras connected to the switcher.

    Just turned off background rendering.
    I'm not certain what you mean for specs in a specific point in the video, but here are the specs for the entire edit I initially received:
    Dimensions: 1920 X 1080
    Codecs: H.264, AAC, Timecode
    2 Audio Channels
    Total bit rate: 12,083
    Size: 951,735,770 bytes (951.7 MB on disk)
    Here are the specs for the exported video that has the audio issue:
    Dimensions: 1920 X 1080
    Codecs: H.264, AAC, Timecode
    2 Audio Channels
    Total bit rate: 12,274
    Size: 966,817,082 bytes (966.8 MB on disk)
    The video is 10:28 minutes long and the audio leaves at 5:57.
    If that wasn't what you were looking for, just let me know. I'm not very good with technical stuff sometimes so may have misunderstood.
    Is there something I should have done to the piece before I began color correcting it, like transcoding?

  • Getting Broadcast traffic from one 3745 to another

    The topology is simple. Three 3550 switches as the backbone tied together using spanning-tree layer 2 wire speed switching. Very simple stuff there. Introduce 3745 access routers, one attached to each 3550, each loaded with 16port ESW, 1 GigE GBic card, and a 8A/S card.
    The problem is we have systems that blow out broadcast traffic that needs to traverse accross all 16-ESWs. We have tried all manor of things but we can not get broadcast traffic to traverse the 1GE port. We can see packets hitting the interface but they are simply getting dropped on the floor.
    I can go into more detail if needed but we think we're missing a painfully simple detail. Perhaps something to do with L3 and L2? Perhaps something to do with bridge groups or vlans or helper protocols?
    Any wisdom to help us out would be greatly appreciated!

    Dwayne
    As you probably already know, the helper-address is configured on the interface that receives the broadcast to be forwarded. So if the broadcast source is in a 16ESW then I would expect the helper address to be configured on whatever interface (probably virtual) repersents the layer 3 interface for those layer 2 ports.
    The function of helper address is that it takes a broadcast packet and forwards to some destination address. The general assumption is that the destination address will be unicast. The destination address can be a subnet broadcast (directed broadcast) and I assume that this is what you are trying to do. Is this correct? If so then be sure that you have ip directed-broadcast enabled on the interface where the destination subnet is located.
    Another potential issue is identification of broadcast packets to be forwarded. Helper address is not intended to forward ALL broadcasts. There is a group of protocols that are enabled by default (DHCP, TFTP, etc). If the broadcast packets that you want to forward are not one of these default protocols then you need to use the ip forward-protocol udp command which would be configured on the interface receiving the initial broadcast (the same interface as the helper-address).
    You probably have these already. But I can not find a good description of what is configured where and thought that a review of these principles might be helpful.
    It probably would be quite helpful to post configs of at least one 3745 and also its associated 3550. If you do not want to post these on the forum please feel free to EMail them to me. My EMail address is available from my forum profile.

  • Time Capsule firewall allows broadcast traffic

    It appears that Time Capsule will forward broadcast traffic from the LAN side to WAN and allow responses back. I would have thought that when the Router Mode was set to "DHCP and NAT" that this wouldn't happen. It seems like this might be a security flaw.
    Here's my setup, and why I believe this is the case:
    Comcast Xfinity service -> Motorola SB6121 -> Time Capsule (latest generation 7.6.1 software) -> Netgear GS116 -> home network with airport express and various hard-wired and WiFi devices.
    The SB6121 cable modem is wired direclty to the WAN port on the Time Capsule. And then the first LAN port on the Time Capusule is wired direclty the Netgear switch. And then everything else is wired directly to the Netgear switch. The Time Capsule's DHCP server is set to hand out addresses in the 172.16.0.2 to 172.16.0.200 range and so everything in my home network should be getting addresses in that range.
    The SB6121 is not a gateway or router - its just a modem, but does still have a weird little DHCP server that is supposedly only active when the cable service is dead, but in practice (at least for me) seems to always be on. And there's no way to turn it off, at least from my end - perhaps Comcast could, but that's a black hole. This weird little DHCP server is hard-wired to hand out addresses between 192.168.100.11 and 192.168.100.42 and there's no way to configure it differently.
    What I see though I (which makes me think there is a security flaw in the Time Capsule firewall) is that DHCP requests from my home network are sometimes answered by the SB6121's DHCP server instead of the Time Capsule's. I say "sometimes" because most of my Apple equipment (laptops, iPhones, iPads and a Mac Mini) get configured with 172.16.0.X addresses. But most non-Apple equipment is getting 192.168.100.X addresses - this includes a Denon AV reciever and Comcast cable box. But I also have an Airport Express (latest version, 7.6.2 software) - its Router Mode is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)", but if its Internet -> Connect Using: is set to DHCP it also gets a 192.168 address.
    I thought maybe it was just the hard-wired devices getting the 192.168 addresses, but they're not. The Mac Mini is hardwired and gets the right address range. And then I thought that all WiFi devices were getting 172.16 addresses, but they're not. I have a "Nest" thermostat that connects to the WiFi and gets a 192.168 address.
    Obviously there are several problems here - having multiple DHCP servers on a network is a recipe for disaster. But it seems to me that the Time Capusule is mis-behaving. The weird little DHCP server on the cable modem on the WAN side of the Time Capsule shouldn't be accessible from my home network. The Time Capsule shouldn't be passing broadcast DHCPDiscover packets from the LAN side through to the WAN side.
    I've been all through the Time Capsule settings and don't see a way to further lock down the WAN-LAN connection. I suppose I could get a managed switch or "real" firewall to stick between the cable modem and the Time Capsule and use it to block traffic, but I shouldn't have to. And I suppose I could ask Comcast to disable the DHCP server on the cable modem, but I don't have the fortitue to sit on hold for hours trying to explain it to them. Or I suppose I could get a different cable modem that doesn't have the silly DHCP server, and maybe that's the ultimate answer, but I still think the Time Capsule has a flaw.
    I got the SB6121 plus Time Capsule combination specifically because I didn't want fidgety stuff to deal with. I could have gotten a router supporting DD-WRT if I wanted to play network engineer at home, but I do that at work and just wanted something I didn't have to debug or think about.
    Anybody in a similar situation or have suggestions?
    If you got this far, thanks for listening.
    -dave.
    (Oh yeah, I swapped the Time Capsule with the Aiport Express -- latest model with WAN and LAN ports -- and got the exact same behavior. I suspect that all Airport models just treat the multple ethernet ports as a dumb layer two switch and blindly forward ethernet broadcast traffic from one port to all the others.)

    Thanks for reporting this.. I think you should advise Apple of this flaw.. It is a serious flaw.
    The cable modems are always made with local IP address so you can check the settings and the DHCP in them is designed for using a block of public IP addresses.. ie.. if you were extremely rich.. you buy a block of IP addresses from the ISP, plug the modem directly to a switch. And every client that joined would get a public IP address. Since the ISP are not that generous as to actually hand out more than one IP, (our local cable ISP in Australia, Telstra actually gives out 3 for free). The modem however will switch from public to private IP address when it does so, once the first address is allocated. There is no security risk as that private IP has no internet connection. (Test it and see, but any device getting 192.168 address should have no internet connection). The Modem has no NAT.. so it is purely for internal purposes.
    When you tested the Airport Express, did you set it up to 172.16.x.x range as well?
    Could you please test if you haven't already the TC at its native IP address and range?
    Domestic routers often fail to work properly if used off their default range.. somewhere in the coding they have fixed some addressing, instead of correctly using settings you put in. This is not at all unusual actually. My advice to people is always stick with default unless you really want some pain.
    If you are happy with pain, I would ensure all names are set to SMB standard.. as it sounds like you know networks I presume you would already do this. Apple names are ghastly things.
    Stick to short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric names for everything.
    Make sure the dhcp range includes enough addresses that it cannot run out..the normal standard is 2-200.
    If the lease time is set to 1day default, set it to 20min.
    I would also turn off ipv6 (maybe only possible on the client). That does seem to lead to confusion.
    If necessary you should be able to use static IP reservation via the dhcp setting in the TC.. that might also help.
    Are you running a 5.6 utility to do the setup?? If not you must!!
    You can load it even into Mountain Lion with a bit of fiddling.
    Check logs and setup the reservation for any devices failing to get IP correctly.
    And yes, in the end you may have to simply use a more standard router.. and hive off the TC to bridged role.

  • Help with larger sized voice wlan.... design considerations.... tips...etc...

    Hi Everyone,
         I'm hoping that you guys and gals can help me with an ongoing problem that we have at one of our sites. We're working on areas of the location due to it's size and phone load. We have an area, that I will refer to as building A, that is roughly a square that is 240' x 240'. The inside of the building has some pallets inside for storage(they allow RF to penetrate through them) and also some metal production lines. There is also a mezzanine  / elevated area in the middle that the users can walk under. It's not very large, but it would affect a phone if you walked underneath it while making a call. So, now that I have a brief description of the environment, I will tell you the equipment I'm running...
    1 x 4402 50AP Wireless Controller with 6.0.199.3 (MR3) installed.
    We currently have nine AP's installed in this area, with 4 up front so that way they cover the office areas better. Most are 1231G's, but some are 1242's.
    Since we do not have A radios everywhere (budgetary decision) we are running all of these phones on 2.4Ghz (Yikes! I know!)
    The 7920's use LEAP and the 7921's use PEAP MS-CHAP v2 with CCKM enabled on the controller.
    I also have 802.1p wired QoS enabled for the voice QoS profile and it is applied to our voice WLAN.
    We have conference rooms in the front area that will need to support roughly 20-30 maximum mixed 7920 and 7921G phones in a roughly small area. (Yikes! I know!)
    We also have a 2106 with mesh .54M installed, but it is for outdoor AP's and should not be affecting this area.
    So, I guess my questions are....
    Has anyone ever operated the 7920 and 7921G's in mixed mode?
    I'm thinking about separating the 7920s on 2.4 and tell the 7921's to prefer the A band or just use A. This will require A radios / surgery, but we've dealt with different code trains, TAC configs, and even added a few more radios. I think it's time to say we need to redesign this area. It doesn't help that phones keep getting purchased either....
    What rule of thumb would you guys / gals say would be appropriate for this phone count in terms of the number of AP's I should use?
    Since we're dealing with two different phone models, it makes it hard to simply just read the deployment guide. I know these phones can coexist, I just think we're running into over capacity and problems with 802.11B in the mix. In the conf room right now, there are most likely signals from at least two AP's. This doesn't seem like enough bandwidth for just the 2.4 Ghz range when 20 - 30 phones are in there. Not all of them are calling, but the associations / mgmt traffic alone must be horrendous since the phones are 802.11B
    We are going to do a manual survey with a 1242 since that AP will support both phone models. I think we may need to survey twice if we're going to go this route; One survey for the 7920's on 2.4Ghz with a 1242AG and one survey on 5Ghz with a 7921G. I think that will provide the info we need to get the AP's repositioned where they need to be.
    What kind of power levels should I be using in an area like that? We've originally had a survey at 50mW, but since then we turned the power down to pwr lvl 3 in some spots due to the additional AP's. I've seen references of roughly 1 AP per 3000 sq. ft at pwr level 4, but that seems overkill.
    Can we run mixed power levels on AP's with the phones? Or will that cause one way audio due to the transmit power diffrences in the cells?
    I'm thinking that we should pick a power level, survey the -67 cell size at the power level, add more AP's so that way they are overlapped 15-20%, and then actually implement the design. I'm pretty good at getting decent channel assignments in place. I know of non-overlapping channels, RRM, etc. I also have an AirMagnet laptop with an Aironet Adapter. It is good for finding noise, interference, etc...
    I understand this is practically a book, but at this point, we've been trying a LOT of different things in order to get this to work properly. I think it's finally time for me to "strongly suggest" that we do the following...
    1. Choose ONE phone model.
    2. Choose ONE AP model.
    3. Make sure to implement the 5Ghz band for all AP's so we have complete coverage.
    4. Choose ONE power level for each band. This will affect the coverage and placement of AP's. I'd imagine that we'd need to survey with A first, and then survey with b/g. Typically we can use the 1242 and get about the same cell size on both bands, but 5Ghz is a higher frequency and may not penetrate as much as 2.4 Ghz..
    5. Come up with a new coverage map based on a manual site survey with the phones mentioned above.
    6. Implement the design.
    7. Use it.
    8. Try not to have a heart attack when the system actually supports that many phones in that area...
    So, please, let me know your thoughts and if you have any suggestions. It would be greatly appreciated. We've been slowly working out the gremlins in the phones there over the past few years. I'm more of a data wireless person myself, but I do have good luck with a low to moderate phone count (usually no more than 7 calls per AP). Once we start doing craziness like trying to get 20-30 802.11B phones to work in the same area on only one or two AP's, then things start to become a challenge, especially when we don't have the 5Ghz cells to help with the bandwidth requirements for voice....
    Thank you for your time,
    Craig

    There's a pretty recent (last few months) Voice over Wlan design guide published (was published for the 9971 phones - but all great advice) and it recommends just about all the settings required for an off the shelf wireless voice network.

  • Problem with broadcasting with 123-2.JA2

    Since I did an upgrade from 122-13.JA4 to 123-2.JA2
    we have problems with locally generated udp broadcast in the wl-environment. The clients associate without any problems with leap and has absolutely no problems with unicast traffic. But locally broadcast from one wl-client to the other seems have problems. We use vlans. Downgrade to 122-13.JA4 and all problems are gone. Does anyone share same problems with this release?
    any input is very welcome

    Yes, lots of our clients couldn't even get trhough the dhcp process. downgraded to 12.2(15)XR2 with success.

  • Issue with Broadcasting and Publish query to Portal from query Designer

    Dear all,
    I have created a standard template ZWT_STANDARD_TEMPLATE in WAD and I have added this for Adhoc Analysis in 'Set Standard Web templated' RSCUSTV27.
    For Broadcasting I have added 0BROADCASTING_TEMPLATE70.
    I have problems with my broadcasting as well as publishing the Query in Portal.
    When I use a Broadcast to Email - it opens a new window with my standard template(ZWT_STANDARD_TEMPLATE ) I have added. No data though.
    Same thing happens for publishing too...When I publish the query to portal from Query Designer or WAD it takes me to the same window with my standard web template. No data though.
    I think both are related to the same issue. Its with broadcasting.
    What is the default template for Broadcasting in NW2004s? Below is the url I have included when I do it from Query designer. Its actually starting the Command - START_BROADCASTER70 but I dont know if it has to do a SOURCE_QUERY=ZCOPA_C03_FAST_PAYABLES. Could anyone compare it with your urls

  • Help With WRT110

     Hi everyone i have a WRT110 and im new to wireless. i went through the whole installation. My router is installed onto my computer and im able to to go on the internet only if my laptop is connected to it with the blue wire. I tried everything to enable my wireless and no matter what i did nothing worked. Can someone tell me step by step what i had to do?

    Hello Teek, I don't know if somebody already answer your help with WRT110 thread. I posted today a problem in it, but kept looking for answers in this forum. Finally I found one by user Mort. I hope this will help you resolve your problems such as it did for me.
    Regards, Angela
    Yes, you can go wireless, for that you have to adjust the wireless settings on your router and you should have a wireless adapter/card... Please access the setup page of the router by launching an Internet
    Explorer and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
    it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
    empty and provide password as admin all in lower cases and then
    click on ok. Click on the Wireless tab and click Manual set up
    - Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed
    - Provide any name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box, all in
    lower cases without any spaces in between.
    - Set wireless channel to 11
    - And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save
    settings.
    Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the
    Network Identifier.
    For Wireless Security : -
    Now Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security.
    Change the Wireless security mode to WEP
    Encryption should be 64 bits.
    Leave the Pass phrase blank, don't type in anything.
    And under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please.
    Click on save settings.
    Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the
    Wireless Network.
    Now try to look for the Wireless Network(SSID) on your laptop and try to connect...
    I may add that after you try and connect remember then to set your laptop settings to be the same you enter when configurating the router. Angela

  • Multi-auth and broadcast traffic

    I was talking with a co-worker about multi-auth host mode and we are wondering how does it handle broadcast traffic. So if we have a switch port set to multi-auth and we are doing dynamic vlan assignment. Say you have an esx host device running 5 vm instances, if three of them pass and get assigned vlan 32, the other two fail and get assigned vlan 86. When a broadcast goes out on vlan 32, will the devices that are in vlan 86 see the broadcast traffic?

    Anybody have an idea?

    I think I need help with driver (software) settings for D110a all-in-one
    Product: D110a all-in-one
    OS: Windows XP Professional
    Error messages: None
    Changes before problem appeared: None--new installation
    The quality of photo images (mostly JPG files) in printouts is awful even though the files display beautifully on the PC screen. I am using
    IrfanView software for displaying/printing. As far as I can tell, IrfanView is not the problem.
    When I print the same images on a Deskjet 5150 attached to a different PC also running XP Pro and IrfanView, the quality of the printouts is at
    least acceptable, Some would probably say good or very good.
    It's dificult to explain in words the problem with the printouts. A picture of really pretty vegetables (squashes, tomatoes, watermelon, etc) comes
    out much too red. Moreover, the red, which appears shaded on the screen, seems to be all one shade in the D110a printouts.
    Something similar happens to a view of a huge tree in full leaf. On screen, there are subtle variations in the "greenness" of the leaves. In the
    printout, all green is the same shade. In the same printout, the trunk of the tree is all a single shade of grey. It isn;t even obvious that the
    trunk is a round, solid object.
    I liken the effect to audio that disappears entirely when you lower the volume and gets clipped into square waves in even moderately loud passages.
    I don't know whether the D110a driver software permits adjusting the parameters that appear to be set incorrectly, and if adjustments are possible,
    how I would identify which parameters to adjust, how I would access them, or how I would adjust them. I'm hoping that someone can help. Thanks.
    I forgot to mention that I have used the diagnostic application and it tells me that there are no problems.

    Hi everyone,
    I noticed the following message when network starts on my gateway
    Warning: This functionality is deprecated.
    Please refer to /etc/rc.conf on how to define a single wired
    connection, or use a utility such as netcfg.
    Then I realized the way network settings should be written in rc.conf has changed. But I can't figure out how this should be done.
    Currently, my set up is the following (old way):
    INTERFACES=(eth0 eth1)
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="eth1 192.168.0.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    eth0 is on DHCP because the IP is dynamically assigned my ISP.
    eth1 has a fix IP because it's on the LAN side.
    No problem to use DHCP on eth0 with the new settings.
    But for eth1, I don't know what I am supposed to write for gateway.
    Wiki isn't clear on that one either, and it looks like many articles still refer to the old way.
    Any guidance appreciated, thanks.
    brazzmonkey,
    you can't define 2 interfaces the old way (even though I saw some tricky workaround somewhere in the forums).
    Use, f.e., netcfg:
    Comment your old lines.
    In /etc/rc.conf insert:
    NETWORKS=(Eth0-dhcp Eth1-static)
    DAEMONS=(..... !network @net-profiles ....)
    In /etc/network.d create 2 files:
    First one is named  Eth0-dhcp.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION="ethernet"
    DESCRIPTION="Whatever text"
    INTERFACE=eth0
    HOSTNAME="your hostname"
    IP="dhcp"
    DHCP_TIMEOUT=15
    Second one is named Eth1-static.
    Contents:
    CONNECTION='ethernet'
    DESCRIPTION='whatver'
    INTERFACE='eth1'
    HOSTNAME='hname'
    IP='static'
    ADDR='192.168.0.10'
    GATEWAY='192.168.0.1' # your gateway IP
    DNS=('192.168.0.1') # your DNS server
    The names Eth0-dhcp and Eth1-static are not magic. They just must be the same in rc.conf and in /etc/network.d.
    Hope it helps.

    PS: netcfg must be installed.
