Help with Canon Pixma MP640

Hi all,
Okay let me run down the steps I've done so far and what I've learned. Apparently the newest version of cups does not work with Canon printers it seems, because of an issue with usblp.
First I got a version of Cups from the AUR with usblp enabled. The package is cups-usblp 1.4.3-2.
Next I followed a guide about Arch and the MP640 here.
The good news is that now my printer is recognized and it appears that all is well. However, when I try to print a test page (as Root) or try to print something from Kword I get the error:
"/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij failed"
The pstocannonij file exists and I have the correct ppd installed. I'm running Arch64 and I have all of the 32bit libraries installed. I have the cups and usblp daemons active in my rc.conf.
Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance!

I've recently bought a Canon PIXMA MP640 multifunction device and it's working perfectly on my Vista 32-bit system. Now it's time to make it work on Arch 64-bit. Is it possible to make this device work without using any 32-bit libraries? I would like my system stay clean off any 32-bit software. Unfortunately on Canon website drivers for this model are still signed as TBD, although I've found this and this.

  • Canon PIXMA MP640 WiFi on Arch Linux x86_64

I have a Canon PIXMA MP640 series multifunctional device connected wirelessly to my home router. On Windows Vista the device works flawlessly, I can print or scan without any problems. Now I decided to configure at least the printer part on my Arch Linux x86_64, which I dual-boot with Vista on the same laptop.
I went through the Wiki entry for CUPS and SAMBA. I did install all the necessary packages, that is:
    1) cups (ver. 1.4.6), ghostscript (ver. 9.01), gsfonts (ver. 1.0.7pre44) - for CUPS
    2) cnijfilter-mp640 (ver. 3.20) and its dependencies: cnijfilter-common (ver. 3.00), lib32-libcups, lib32-popt - drivers for this particular model
    3) samba (ver. 3.5.6) and gamin (ver. 0.1.10) – for SAMBA
Then I added cups and samba to DAEMONS section of the /etc/rc.conf file
    DAEMONS=(@syslog-ng !network @netfs @crond hal alsa wicd bluetooth laptop-mode !openntpd @cups @samba)
    copied Samba configuration file
    cp /etc/samba/smb.conf.default /etc/samba/smb.conf
in which I changed only one entry – name of my workgroup, and then I restarted my system.
In System Settings as root I went to Sharing→Samba and checked if everything seems fine – see print screen below.
    http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/300/samba1.png
Then in Printer Configuration I chosed New network printer and I tried to fill all the boxes with information I have about my printer – see below. I also pointed to the specific .ppd file - /usr/share/cups/model/canonmp640.ppd.
    http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6650/samba2.png
The printer name and it's localization I got from my router – see below.
    http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/3982/samba3.png
As you all see on print screen No 2 I'm getting “Bad URI – need printer name” error from CUPS. I “googled” about it, but still haven't been able to solve this issue. What am I doing wrong?

No hints??? I believe it's related to Samba. I don't know how to configure it properly, so it can find my WiFi printer.

  • PG-810 isn't compatible with canon Pixma mp280

My mp280 came with a ink PG-810 but the canon site say that PG-810 isn't compatible with canon Pixma mp280
it all I just want to know that can we replace the ink with a pg 810
the canon site says it is compatible with pg210 but that isn't available in my area so can I buy and use pg 810 in my printer ?
ps the printer came with pg 810 cartridges
    THANKS

    Hi prabhy!
If your PIXMA MP280 was purchased or manufactured for use outside of the US, then you will need to contact support for the country where it was purchased or manufactured to be used to determine what ink tanks will work in your model. We know that printers purchased in the US may not work with inks purchased from other countries.
To contact support for another country, go to www.canon.com and select the region or country you need.
    We hope this helps!

  • Wifi canon pixma mp640 goes offline

why does my canon pixma mp640 go offline every time my mac goes into standby mode? the only resolution i have found is to reboot the printer, but sometimes i have to do that eight to ten times a day.

No hints??? I believe it's related to Samba. I don't know how to configure it properly, so it can find my WiFi printer.

  • Printing problems with Canon Pixma IP4700

I used to use a PC, photoshop and my Canon pixma IP4700. With this i could achieve perfect results on an A4 image. I have embedded the correct paper profile and my colour management system was set up just right. I have now upgraded to a mac(running Snow Leopard OS) , but i am now getting problems with my prints. I opened up the exact same .psd file without changing anything and sent it off to print on my canon. The result has came out far too bright?. When i used my PC I would have a lot more controls within my printer driver screen, but now with the mac the printer driver screen dosnt have very many controls at all. Even when i soft proof the print on the print screen it dose not show it any ware near as bright as the end result print.
I am a student of photography and i have asked a few of my class mates and they say that they have had the same problem. They tend to use a professional printers, but as i had received such perfect prints before I know this result is obtainable.
Is there anything anyone can suggest to help??
If there is any more information i can provide to help just let me know.
    Thanks a lot in advance

    Hi there,
In reading your post I'd be curious to see the cups error log. Given that the Gutenprint drivers would not print also, I would say that something is wrong with the core printing system. The log would show which filter is causing the spooler to stop.
Thinking that it is CUPS related, I would try resetting printing system (if you haven't done so already). Then I would add the queue again using the Gutenprint driver for starters. If this doesn't work then no need to try the Canon driver.
Note that the Canon test print is not an actual print but an instruction to output the inbuilt data. But the test print via the Gutenprint printer queue is a page generated by CUPS. So this would suggest that the CUPS usb backend is okay and something further up the spool creation process is failing. Again, the cups error log would give some clues as to what is going wrong. As to why both driver sets are failing is interesting...

  • I desperately need help installing Canon Pixma ip6000D printer in Windows 7 64-bit

My software CD (drivers, etc.) will not work with Windows 7 64-bit. I have tried running it in Windows XP compatibility mode, but it says it is made for 32-bit and will not work with 64-bit. Canon's website says it has an add-on module, but it doesn't have
the printer driver, and it says "Your printer must be installed via Microsoft Update before you download and use this module." I have tried to find a way to install the printer via Microsoft Update, But I can't find any information
    about how to do this.
I have also done searches for the canon pixma ip6000d drivers for windows 7 64-bit, but all the results I have seen say that they are an add-on modules.
I would GREATLY appreciate any help with this.

After doing some more digging, I found a solution, and hopefully it will help anyone else who is having problems. Go to this page:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Install-a-printer
You can manually install the printer by following these instructions. If the model of your printer does not show (mine didn't), click the update button. It will take several minutes (maybe longer if you have a slow internet connection), but eventually it
will bring up a new list of printers. Just choose your printer and follow the instructions. My printer is working fine now.

  • Problems printing wirelessly with Canon PIXMA iP4500

I have a MacBook Pro 15 in 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 Gb RAM and I’m running Mac OSX 10.5.7.
    1. My Canon PIXMA iP4500 inkjet printer used to work perfectly as a printer attached to the USB port of my Airport Extreme Model A1034 modem, when my computer communicates with the modem either wirelessly or via an ethernet connection between the computer and Airport, but lately it isn’t working.
    2. When I try to print the printer icon shows up in the dock and when I click on it a Canon iP4500 series printer dialog box pops up and says the Printer is Ready but the status of the document is “Stopped”.
    3. If I click on “Resume” and error message appears: “Operation could not be completed. client-error-not-possible”. This happen repeatedly.
    4. I recycled the modem, turned the printer off and on (and did those things in reverse) and ran Airport Utility, all to no avail. I also deleted the printers in my Print & Fax System Preferences dialog box, downloaded the latest CUPS driver from Canon (ver 10.1.0.0), and recreated the printer (called Canon iP4500 Series).
    5. Network diagnostics says it can connect to the internet over either my airport or Ethernet connection but it cannot connect to the Canon iP4500 series.riousbprint.tcp.local.
    6. Also when I run the Canon IJ Printer Utility from the Canon iP4500 series printer dialog box a Printer List dialog box shows up with no USB-attached printers listed
    7. I can print if I connect the printer directly to my MacBook Pro, so I don’t think it’s a driver or USB cable problem. Curiously, when I connect the printer directly to the computer the Print & Fax dialog box automatically creates a second printer called Canon iP4500 series-1. If I use the original Canon iP4500 Series printer in this setup it says “No pages found”.
Basically I’m stumped at this point and would appreciate some help. Unfortunately, I’m on a 3-mo sabbatical and do not have my original Canon printer software with me so I cannot reinstall the printer app unless someone knows how I can obtain it. Similarly I cannot reinstall Leopard either, though it doesn’t seem likely I should need to. Happy to try anything else though.

Hello Basil and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Reading your post, it would suggest there is a problem with the USB of the Airport Extreme, but I don't believe this to be case as there is not much that could go wrong with them. Instead I think there is something not right with the transport (TCP) protocols that get the data from your Mac to the Airport USB.
At this stage, I suggest you look at installing version 5.23 of the Gutenprint driver. This version supports your iP4500 and will help to narrow the cause of the current symptom.
Before installing the Gutenprint driver, I suggest we trash all the current Canon drivers you have installed - we can add them again later if need be.
Open Finder and navigate to Mac HD/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter. Trash all the contents of this folder and empty the trash.
Next, navigate to the Mac HD/Library/Receipts folder. You will see the Canon iP4500 xxx.pkg and another one for the CUPS driver you installed. Trash both of these and empty also.
Now open System Preferences > Print & Fax and delete all the Canon printers in the list (highlight and hit ' - '). It would also be handy to reset the printing system, so while in Print & Fax, move your mouse over the now empty printers list, hold down your Control key and click (or right-click if you can). Click on Reset printing system when it appears.
Now install the Gutenprint drivers. When this is done, restart your Mac and try adding the iP4500 again. This time, after you select the Airport shared printer, you will have to open Print Using and search for the 'Canon iP4500 - Gutenprint v5.2.3'. Select this and now try printing. Let me now the result.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 not printing on network with canon pixma iP4500

    Hi
I am not able to print satisfactorily from my 15" MacBook Pro 2011 to my QNAP TS439 server that has my Pixma iP4500 installed.  I contacted apple support and after 45 minutes the operative gave up and said it was a QNAP problem.  I am fairly sure it is not, so please read on...
Here is what happens.  I ( myself and Apple) select the correct printer from the menu on my MacBook Pro with the correct path and printer on the server using Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  As soon as I go to print something  it says it is waiting for 10 seconds, very quickly it gets extended out past 30 seconds, but never prints.
I have tried another driver called the Canon Pixma iP4500 Gutenprint v 5.2.3.  This  will only print in black text.  If I try to print colours, I get a very wishy washy pastel effect that just about shows that there might be some colours there.  This is hopeless and most unsatisfactory.
In my opinion, this points the finger at Canon's printer driver that has been supplied to Apple, because the printer driver for Windows 7 works perfectly from the Windows 7 x64 PC.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

Just a quick reply for others in case it helps....
First you have to install the Canon drivers for Yosemite from Canon Printer Drivers v3.1 for OS X.
Then since I had reset my Canon MP620 network settings, I had to start from scratch. I connected the printer to my new computer (with Yosemite) via USB and then launched the Canon IJ Network Tool.app (downloaded from the Canon web site) and it found the printer. However it hung on the last step "Searching for printers via access point...". At that point (after waiting a minute for it to give up), I had to read the IP from the Canon printer and enter it by hand in the Network Tool dialog.
I then unplugged the USB cable, and went to the Printers and Scanners system preference panel. After a few minutes, the printer showed up and I was able to set it up.
I then tried to set up the printer on a 2nd computer, running Mavericks. The Canon printer would not show up in the Printers and Scanners system preference panel, but after I launched Canon IJ Network Tool.app on that computer, the printer did show up and I could set it up there as well. This is all much more convenient than using a USB cable and sharing the printer, but, dang, is it complicated!

  • Help getting Canon PIXMA MG2520 Printer to Print Wirelessly

I just got my Canon PIXMA MG2520 printer set up.  Everything worked perfectly.  I downloaded the drive and plugged it in and it worked.  However, I cannot get it to print wirelessly.  With my last printer there was a simple step to get the printer to do this.  Something I checked or unchecked, but I can't remember what that was.  Can someone help please?  Thanks.

Do you have your printer setup in its setup panel to connect to your WiFi network?
When you say you plugged it in and it worked, are you saying you used a USB cable to try it?
If the printer is setup to connect to your WiFi network, you may only need to power off your router, wait a few seconds and power it back on for your printer to be seen on the network.

  • Canon Pixma MP640 Error B200

    Hi,
When I turn on my printer it give me B200 error. A week ago I disconnected supply cable for 12 hours and it go well.
Now I tried to disconnected already for 12 hours but this time it don't go.
I I replaced all cartridges, clean printer head with water and dry it, but it don't go.
I tried to go in service mode and green and orange led  flashing alternatively. If I try to press resume 4 times in service mode to reset ink waste, nothing happens.
    Advice???

*** DISCLAIMER *** You'll try the following advices solely on your own responsibility!
After B200 error in my MP640 (Europe version) I firstly carried out a print head cleaning method with alcohol and distilled water (6 + 6 min) proposed at [link removed per forum guidelines] (see down on the page and use Google translate if needed).
    Well, cleaning alone didn't help.
After that I found from another forum an 'open print head bay boot' (like I'm calling it...) trick which I combined with an idea of nozzle cleaning. So I managed to solve my B200 problem as follows:
    1. Turn OFF the printer and make sure there is plenty of ink left in every tank.
    2. From "Devices and Printers" open MP640 properties and further the "Maintenance" window.
    3. From Maintenance section select nozzle cleaning (all colors), preferably the 'deeper' one. And then STOP! Don't start any cycle yet.
    4. Open the print head bay (as though you were about to change inks).
    5. Turn ON power.
    6. Wait for print carriage to start moving to the left and let it go past half way.
    7. Before print carriage reaches left hand side (but after going halfway across) shut the cover.
    8. Printer's display turns now into dark color and shows text "Canon" above the 'running balls'. During that time start the cleaning cycle but don't do anything else, i.e. don't try to print the test page yet.
    9. Nozzle cleaning should start right after printer initializing.
    10. After the cleaning cycle is finished run another one without printing anything. Make sure you don't run out of any ink.
    11. Print the test page to check if additional cleaning is still needed.
I had to do the print bay boot + nozzle cleaning another time because B200 error returned quite soon after the first try. But after some more cleaning cycles and printing everything seems to be ok now. Hope this helps with your printer!

  • Lan problems with canon Pixma mp990

I've just got a Canon Pixma mp990 printer - mainly because og the wireless connection. The installation worked fine on my girlfrinds Macbook with Leopard. But on my own Macbook Pro with snowleopard, i can't make it work.
I can detect the scanner - but not the printer. I've downloaded the newest drivers on canons website. Iv'e tried canons support - but the gave up. Told me it had something to do with my Snowleopard installation (apperently there was a 'other printer' button missing in the 'add printer' window. And therefor they couldnt help me!)
I've also tried installing the drivers on a new user-account on the mac - agian with no luck.
    Hope someone can help me...

With the correct Canon drivers installed, either via the Canon web site or via the Apple download, you should be able to get the MP990 working. I have the MP980 and have been printing via wireless for a couple of months now with Snow Leopard.
To add the MP990 as a network printer you need to be patient. The scanner portion of the machine appears very quickly but the printer portion, which uses the canonijnetwork protocol to publish the printer on the network, takes some time to appear (usually no longer than 10 seconds). So, when you click to Add the printer and select the Default browser view (the More Printers menu mentioned to the OP by his Canon support is used for 10.5, not 10.6) you will see the MP990 as a Bonjour Scanner very quickly. If you don't see the scanner, then something is wrong with your MP990 wireless setup. After you see the scanner just wait with the Default window open. The printer should appear after a short while. When it does, select it - the Print Using menu will automatically change to Canon MP990 series.
If the MP990 as a printer does not appear, then do you have Parallels 4 or earlier installed? This is known to stop the networked Canon printer from appearing in the Default browser view. This issue is resolved with Parallels 5, but there is an upgrade cost involved. If you don't want to part with your money, then check this forum by searching Parallels. There is information about how you can stop the Parallels virtual network ports via Terminal so that you can see the networked printer.

  • Scanning problems with Canon Pixma MX300

    Hi!
Alright, so I can print with the canon pixma mx300, but I cannot scan. I am able to get to the scan driver (scan gear), but once it starts to scan, the program begins to become non-responsive, I can hear the printer doing something, but the program just starts to freeze. The printer is connected directly to my computer, and I have no clue what to do now.
    Erm...help

There is a possibility that some other software on your Mac is interfering with the Canon software. This could be the case if you had another brand of AIO (All in One) or a standalone scanner installed previously on this Mac.
If this was the case, then open System Preferences then Accounts. Select your account and then select Login Items. This is a list of all the items set to open when you log in. Some scanner applications will be shown in this list and if they are not related to the MX300 then this could be the problem. If you see something that you know you no longer have, then you can highlight the application and remove it by pressing minus ( - ) button. If you are not sure, write down what is listed and post it back here.
Sometimes there can be other applications that can be running in the background, but will not be shown in this list. For these types of apps, you need to have your Activity Monitor open when you attempt to scan. This will show the scangear application using a lot of your CPU resources. But hopefully it will also show another application that is running and using CPU resources, which often causes the freeze you mention. If you haven't used it before then this can be a tad daunting to look at. So if you want to take a screen grab, showing the scan gear app at the top, then post it somewhere to view I can have a look at it.
My last suggestion is to try another scanning application, like Image Capture or Preview. This can help to narrow-down the possible causes of the problem. If neither of these work, then it would suggest that ScanGear has a problem and needs removing/reinstalling. Let me know how the above suggestions go and if they are no help then I will give steps to remove the scanner software.

  • Time capsule don't work with Canon PIXMA ip4850?

I have a Time capsule (third generation) and a new Canon PIXMA ip4850.
When I connect the priner directly to my MBP I can print without problems.
But when I connect the printer with the TC USB port, then the TC can't find the printer.
Can somebody help me? Is this printer not compatible with the TC?
Because with my old Brother printer I've had no problmes to print with the TC...the TC found the printer once I connected him with TC USB port
    Rgds

Unfortunately, this would indicate that the Time Capsule does not support this Canon model.
You might try the Canon support site to see if they have any newer drivers available for download that might do the job. Apple also has updates from time to time, so a future update might incorporate this model.
Since Canon supplies the drivers to Apple, you might also want to ask Canon if they plan to provide the drivers for this model for the Time Capsule.
