Help with cleaning out my library

Like many users I have a large iTunes library where most tracks are conveniently organised into Playlists or Albums. However, over the last couple of years, it is true that some playlists have been deleted and, indeed, tracks added to the Library which do not appear in any playlist but which I may or may not want to keep.
Is it possible, therefore, to do something within iTunes to help me find those tracks that do not belong in any Playlist (for example) so that I can then listen to each one and decide if I want to keep it or not? (perhaps using a Smart Folder or something?)
Also, assuming I end up with a bunch of tracks in a Smart Folder which are not attributed to any playlist, how do I delete these tracks from the folder AND from the Library at the same time?

The way I have my music organised is by Playlists representing either Albums or pieces of work by the same artist. However, for quite some time, iTunes has also been my default mp3 or aiff player which means that quite a lot of random audio has drifted in there. Since iTunes doesn't have any clever way of tidying up the Library (e.g. Library Folders or "Shelves") I am looking at a way to quickly weed out the stuff I don't want to keep. Using the logic that most of the stuff I want has already been placed in PLAYLISTS, I would like to find a way to push all the stuff that Isn't allocated to a playlist into one Folder where I can decide whether to keep or to trash.
Therefore - my question is.....Can I quickly sort un-allocated music to a Folder and then trash individual items from that folder (and the Library) at the same time if necessary?
By "un-allocated music" I mean the tracks in the Library which do not belong to any Playlist in iTunes.
Alternatively - can anyone suggest a neat way to tidy the library with 1708 items in it, some of which may be unwanted.

  • Can anyone help with an out of memory error on CS2?

    Hello,
I have been battling with an out of memory error on a dell laptop running 2gb of ram. I have had no prior issues with this laptop running CS2 until last week when I started getting the out of memory errors. I have seen several articles about this occuring on later versions of illustrator. Just prior to this issue appearing I had to delete and rebuild the main user profile on the computer due to it consistently logging into a temporary account.
Once the new profile was established and all user documents and profile settings were transferred back into it, this problem started showing up. The error occurs when clicking on files listed as Illustrator files, and when opening the illustrator suite. Once I click on the out of memory error it still continues to load illustrator. The files are located on a server and not on the remote computer. I have tried to copy the files to the local hard drive with the same result when I try to open them. I also tried to change the extension to .pdf and got no further. I tried to open a file and recreate the work and all I got was the black outline of the fonts. none of the other artwork appeared. once rebuilt, when trying to save, It gives the out of memory error and does not save the file.
Illustrator was installed on another dell laptop, same model, etc and works fine. no problem accessing network files. I just attempted to use Illustrator from the admin profile on the machine in question and it works fine and lightening fast. Just not from the new rebuilt profile. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the software. it has not helped. could there be stray configuration settings that we transfered over to the new profile that should not have been?
    Any insights will be helpful.

  • Need help with my Aperture 3 Library

    Greetings:
I recently purchased Aperture 3 with my new iMac and need some help. I have a large photo library (like 8GB)...all of these are JPEG photos in folder etc. Now after I have pointed Aperture to my pictures library, I now see my pictures library folder has ballooned to over 29GB. I have not added a great deal more photos and it is just blowing up the space on my hard drive. My question is, I see there is an Aperture library file that is like 9GB in size, then all of my other photos are there too...so can I delete the separate folder of pictures that I originally had before Aperture or do I need to keep the "Aperture Library.aplibrary" file and I can get rid of the others? I am confused as to what I need to keep and get rid of...and I don't want to delete something I need here...but also, I don't want to keep duplicates...it seems like from the size, which is now nearly 4 times the size it used to be. Please help me understand the in's and out's of this so I will get rid of the copies (if there are any).
    Thank you,
    Dave Jordan

    Hi Dave
I'd recommend you read a couple of the sections in the User Manual before proceeding. I'd suggest the following:
     1) [What Are Managed Images and Referenced Images?|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapte r=3%26section=1%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:Aperture-UserManual-91292STP-1013878] from the 'Basic Components of Aperture' page.
     2) [Planning Your Import Strategy|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapt er=4%26section=3] from the 'Importing Images' chapter.
    Don't worry - they're not long!
You want to understand the difference between managed and referenced and eventually make you own decision. In contrast to Matthew, I'm much happier with referenced masters. You need to get a feel for the pros and cons of each approach and then decide what's right for you. Having said that, I understand that you can change (or even mix?) approaches later on if you find the need.
Some of the other chapters in the [Importing Images|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter =4%26section=0] section might also be useful in shaping your thoughts at this stage.

  • Help with Clean Access Architecture

    Hello All,
I wanted to engage some of the NetPros out there about designing our Clean Access architecture. We purchased 4 3140s (2 x CAMs w/ FO, 2 x CASs w/ FO). The goal is to use Clean Access to validate select areas of our head quarters, along with validate users in a remote location.
The HQ part of the design I can understand without issue. It's when we begin to deal with the remote office that I become uncertain about the design. The remote office is MPLS connected to HQ (L3 multi-hop). We want users in the remote office to also be L2 authenticate to the Clean Access cluster at HQ. Across MPLS this does not appear to be straightforward. We'd like to do a L2 deployment, but from what I've read this will require using L2TPv3 at the remote office to "tunnel" the VLANs from HQ to remote and vice-versa. My fear is that now the default gateway for the remote clients is the HQ Clean Access cluster. Therefore... all traffic will be "switched" across their WAN link. This becomes and issue as the remote office has local Windows domain controllers for faster file access on another VLAN... and in this scenario it sounds like the workstations would have to travel across the L2TPv3 tunnel to HQ to just have to go back across the tunnel to the remote office for file access. Sounds slow!
Does anyone have recommendations as to how to design this centralized, L2, OOB architecture. In my mind I would want the clients attempting authentication to the switch... switch forward to the CAS... CAS validates posture and passes down necessary VLAN to switch. All VLAN'ing and switching is kept remote. We operate all 3750 switches... so our infrastructure can work with NAC. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to try to explain the requirements. Thanks for the help.
    -Mike
    http://cs-mars.blogspot.com

    Hi Mike -
Very good questions. You definitely do not need the L2TPv3 across the WAN to control the ports at the remote site.
    The CASs can be deployed L2 In-Band (IB), L3 In-Band (IB), L2 Out-of-Band (OOB) or L3 Out-of-Band (OOB).
L3 OOB can be used to control the switches at the remote sites. A 2nd vlan is required for the remote site to serve as the authentication vlan. All ports start off on this Auth Vlan when a user plugs in.
The user receives an IP Address on this Auth Vlan and the local L3 device is the GWY. The L3 device should have ACLs to protect the rest of the network from this Auth Vlan. The only permit entries in the ACL should let the users get to CAS and the remediation servers. Using a network like 192.168.x.x and varying the 3rd octet on a per-site basis simplifies the ACLs if you are using the 10.x.x.x as your internal addressing. The ACLs should be places on all the MPLS routers to protect the production network from the Auth network.
Once the user proves trustworthy, the Clean Access changes the vlan on the switch to the production/normal vlan and the user has complete access as before.
CASs can be either one of the 4 roles (L2 IB, L3 IB, L2 OOB, L3 OOB) when they are added to the CAM.
If you plan to use L2 OOB for your HQ and L3 OOB for the remotes, you may need to add 1 more CAS pair to your architecture.
We have some great diagrams that the Clean Access product team have put together that will illustrate this architecture to you.
Your local SE / CSE should be able to provide this to you.
Let us know if you have any follow up questions.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help with clean Windows 8.1 install Yoga 2 Pro

    Hey guys,
I purchased a Yoga 2 Pro about 4 months ago as a secondary computer for college. I've been a Mac user for most of my life, and was intersted in learning more about the Windows ecosystem. While messing around in the partition settings, I must have made a mistake, and deleted a partition. I've been trying to follow this guide from the forums, and have the PBR_DRV partition and a "Drive 0 Unallocated Space", as per the walkthrough, but I'm not able to install Windows 8.1 on the "Unallocated Space" from a flash drive. An error with a different code appears everytime. Could anyone help?
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Guide-Windows-8-1-PRO-RTM-clean-install-o...

What do you mean by clean install?  Are you simply restoring a backup image of the pre-installed OS, or are you really installing with a new copy of Windows?

  • Help with cleaning off a 23" Apple Cinema display HD

Ok guys, I work with LCD's for a living, but mine are a bit different than the Apple monitors (plus, this is my dime, not my companies..). So, I come home to find out our "house guest"'s kid was flinging gogurt all over the place. I look at my LCD's and sure enough, both have someone oily on them.
I cleaned the dell with no issues, but my 23" Apple Cinema Display HD, has a couple of marks that won't come off (I used water and a micro fiber cloth to clean it). It's like two little oily spots about the size of the tip of a finger, and one little line in the bottom right corner.
At work, normally we would use denatured alcohol to clean the LCD surface, but I'm quite familiar with the LCD's at work, and what is attached to the polarizer. My Apple display, I'm not so sure, so I don't want to use something on it that is going to damage the surface. Any recommendations? The areas that have the issue don't seem to have any display related problems.... They aren't finger clusters, and the polarizer doesn't look damaged.
thanks! And yes, the house guest was informed what this monitor costs to replace.... and I threatened to chop off fingers (kidding).

Apple say not to use alcohol or ammonia. Dilute some hand dishwashing liquid. Moisten a facial tissue with it, and rub gently. Then use several facial tissues moistened with just water to remove the detergent residue.

  • Help with "greyed out" option for Publishing a group of Parameters in Motion 5!

How do you group published parameters in Motion 5, so that you don't have one giant list of published options for Final Cut Pro X?
My main goal is To publish a compound parameter (a parameter with nested subparameters)
Looking through Motion Help, it should be as easy as clicking the little disclosure triangle on the right of the inspector, but the word "Publish" is greyed out...

I know I've looked at rigging, but based off the Motion Help Online Manual, It should be as simple as clicking on the option for publish and have nested subparameters...
Rigging is excellent, but more steps would be needed to do the same thing i believe...

  • Help with working out layout

    Hi,
I trying to work out the best way to structure a layout for a
    page that is
centered with a dropshadow on all sides, and for the main
    large image and
text below to be flexible height to allow for different font

The way I initially layed it out, I did a plain white

    the heights
    rigid.
This is a pic of what it should look like -

  • Need help with an Outer Join

I have the following query which has an outer join and it works perfectly and shows publication paragraph which don't have any maintenance records with a value of 0.
However when I add to the where clause conditions such as lpm.fac_ident and lpm.start_date, the null values no longer show up in the query(see second SQL statement).
I am new at SQL and am just trying to make this outer join work. Any help would be appreciated.
    -- THIS WORKS
    SELECT m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency, count(l.publication_paragraph) ACTIVITIES_PERFORMED
    FROM lpm_paragraph_mapping_table m, lpm l, pm_requirements_table pm
    WHERE m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph (+)
    GROUP BY m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency
    order by count(l.publication_paragraph);
    -- THIS DOES NOT WORK
    SELECT m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency, count(l.publication_paragraph) ACTIVITIES_PERFORMED
    FROM lpm_paragraph_mapping_table m, lpm l, pm_requirements_table pm
    WHERE m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph (+)
    AND l.fac_ident = 'EWR' AND TO_CHAR(l.start_date, 'YYYY') = '2010'
    GROUP BY m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency
    order by count(l.publication_paragraph);

    Hi,
    I just didn't get. The table (pm_requirements_table pm) haven't any join ???
Regards,Forgive the ASCII art, but your query looks like:
    ----------  JOIN ----------
    | Alias M | ====> | Alias L |
    | Alias PM |
----------- The table pm_requirements_table is not joined at all. Unless it has only a single row, then your resultset will have 1 row for each row in lpm_paragraph_mapping_table (because of the outer join) times the number of rows in pm_requirements_table. Consider this simplified example.
    SQL> select * from t;
            ID DESCR
             1 T 1
             2 T 2
    SQL> select * from t1;
            ID DESCR
             1 T1 1
             2 T1 2
             3 T1 3
             4 T1 4
    SQL> select 1.id, t.descr, t1.descr
      2  from t, t1;
            ID DESCR      DESCR
             1 T 1        T1 1
             1 T 1        T1 2
             1 T 1        T1 3
             1 T 1        T1 4
             1 T 2        T1 1
             1 T 2        T1 2
             1 T 2        T1 3
1 T 2        T1 4Here, my table t is the result from your join between lpm_paragraph_mapping_table and lpm. My table t1 is your pm_requirements_table. You need something more like:
    SQL> select 1.id, t.descr, t1.descr
      2  from t, t1
      3  where t.id = t1.id;
            ID DESCR      DESCR
             1 T 1        T1 1
1 T 2        T1 2Assuming you fix that join, you can use a sub-query to apply the predicates to the lpm as Centinul showed, or, if you are on a current version of Oracle, use ANSI join syntax wich would look something like:
    SELECT m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency,
            count(l.publication_paragraph) ACTIVITIES_PERFORMED
    FROM lpm_paragraph_mapping_table m,
       LEFT JOIN lpm l,
          ON m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph and
             l.fac_ident = 'EWR' AND
             TO_CHAR(l.start_date, 'YYYY') = '2010'
       JOIN pm_requirements_table pm
          on something
    GROUP BY m.publication_paragraph, pm.description, pm.frequency
ORDER BY count(l.publication_paragraph);Leaving aside the missing join, the reason why your query as posted does not work is that when there is not a match on m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph Oracle will "make up" rows form lpm with all null columns for each row in lpm_paragraph_mapping_table where there is no match. So, when you compare those made up rows from lpm, you are effectively saying where NULL = 'EWR' and TO_CHAR(NULL, 'yyyy') = '2010'. Null is never equal to anything. Any comparision against null is unknown, so the made up rows get filtered out by your predicate.

Renames each file in \Users\ephil\Documents to lower case

It really doesn't help you learn if we're giving you the answers to questions. That said, there are a number of places where the code you've posted has syntax errors. Any place you see "$" with nothing after it in that code (ie, "$.StartTime" or "ls $ |",
assume they meant to type "$_" ("$_.StartTime", "ls $_ |").
There are also a lot of aliases and partial parameter names in the code.  This may be deliberate, to get you to play around with the commands and figure out what the cryptic notation really means, but I don't think it's very helpful.  We encourage
people to use full command and parameter names in scripts to enhance code clarity; the same standard should be applied to your test questions.  Aliases are an optional convenience if you want to save some typing, once you're comfortable with them.
So, here are the aliases used in your questions, along with their actual command / parameter name:
    % : ForEach-Object
    ? : Where-Object
    ls : Get-ChildItem
    sort: Sort-Object
    select: Select-Object
    move: Move-Item
    -r:  (as a parameter to ls / Get-ChildItem) -Recurse
-fo: (as a parameter to ls / GetChildItem) -Force
-dest: (as a parameter to move / Move-Item) -Destination
Yes the $_. turned out as $. for some reason.
Could you help me with any of these questions? They will really prepare me well for the test. If you could provide answers for any of them I could then work backwards and figure out how to arrive at the answer.

  • Need help with blown out highlights please

Hi.  I am not very good with Photoshop and need some help on how to fix the blown out highlight areas of this photo, please.  I've spent the past couple of hours trying to figure this out and have not found a good technique yet.  Any help will be most appreciated.

First brighten the shot up using an adjustment layer and then brush your highlights back to where they are now. the fact your shot looks so dark, makes the bright areas more noticeable. if they are totally blown in the original, you cant get detail where it does not exist, but making the overall image brighter visually should help in my opinion.

What I'll want to do is that keep all my music on my ssd and let all the podcast and itunes u be on an external hdd.

    move music, playlists and apps.
let the podcast and itunes u be on an external hdd and yet be accessible from itunes, like being referenced.
in the past i did this by moving the entire library to the internal drive and then while itunes was running, move the videos from the library folder to the external drive. it autoMAGICALLY was able to find the videos on the external drive while my music and apps were stored in the internal.
now my library size is so big with all the videos that i cannot do the above steps as i want be able to copy the entire library to the internal ssd.
    any help is appreciated.

Sometimes we sleep.  We have even been known to be away from the keybord to bathe (but usually not for longer than 2 minutes once a week ).
I don't know how you automagically did it last time - your details are lacking.  iTunes is normally terrible at following you moving things, especially from drive to drive.  You either have to let iTunes do the moving (by consolidating to a new location) or you have to disable iTunes managing your media in which case it will follow moving inside a drive but still not between drives.
Despite the new version, iTunes still does not make it easy to split your library between drives.  Probably since you only buy your items from iTunes and are never away from a high speed Internet connection it doesn't matter since you can always stream or download items you need from your Match subscription, right?

Having it printed out in the way you suggested helped me.  To make the text large enough for the person with visual impairment to "see", I also resorted to actually typing them out in Pages and making it about 72pt;  I had to print it out so that they can hold the paper right up to their face.

  • Help with audio out when plugging into 3.5" jack on a MacBook's combo input

With my old iMac, I used to plug my guitar into the 3.5" microphone jack* and either used the computer's speakers or plug headphones into the separate headphone port for audio out.
Now I have MacBook Air with a headphone/mic combo port. I checked the sound settings in System Preferences and couldn't select speakers for external audio. Is there a way to assign audio-out to the speakers and keep audio-in assigned to the mic/headphone port? Or am I going to need to buy some dongle or adapter now?
*How did I connect a guitar to the 3.5" port? I used a generic computer speaker wire (3.5" on each side) and plugged a 3.5" to 1" adapter (the kind you use for stereo headphones) into the guitar.

    Hi Tim -
Please bear with me because I am no Apple expert. However, I do remember reading something that might help you out.
You wrote that you store your sound libraries are installed on an external drive. Someone, who posted either here or on another Logic bulletin board, basically stated that problems may occur if an external hard disk drive that carries the sound libraries is FAT32 or NTFS formatted (formatted for a Windows-based computer). Apparently, an external hard disk drive utilized for sound libraries should be formatted as *Mac OS Extended* (not journaled). (I hope that someone more expert on this subject will either validate this claim or suggest another option.)
Try doing a Search in this forum for more information on this subject. But I think how that external drive is formatted might make a difference on performance for the Mac computer.
I come from the PC world as well. I like both the Apple and PC systems. But I really like working with the Logic program.
    Good luck to you
    Ted

  • Need help with my iPod music library

I made a back-up of my iPod music library by enabling disk use and copying the music folder from the iPod_Control folder. I recently had to restore (some minor problems when I installed iTunes 7 and updated my iPod), and I moved the songs from the backup music folder to my iPod. All of the files transfered, but my iPod doesn't show the new library. I'm assuming that I have to refresh the library, maybe by deleting the old library file somehow. Any advice? I had songs on my iPod that I no longer have acceess to due to my laptop dying, so simply resynching to my current iTunes library won't help, and I'd rather not look through all the crazy folders in my backup to find my missing tracks. Thanks!
    iPod w/video   Windows XP

The iPod usually won't view the songs properly unless iTunes puts them on there.
But, you have that folder, which is a good thing.
I would have iTunes update your iPod with those songs.
In iTunes, go to File-->Add folder to library. Add the iPod_Control folder to the library.
iTunes will import all of those songs into your iTunes library with the correct names and everything. Then you can update your iPod with iTunes and get all your music on there and recognized. Do not delete or move the folder once you add it to iTunes, as iTunes may be reading the music from it, and moving it may not allow you to play songs in your iTunes library.
I would restore your iPod before you put the music on there though, as the music you manually added to the iPod may be taking up space and iTunes won't be able to fill that space with music.
