Help with combo drive

recently, my combo drive has been importing and burning cds slower than it used to (about half the speed). i have repaired permissions, and i use onyx and macjanitor often. i wonder if i need to clean out some preferences or something, but i am at a loss. any ideas?

Hi, J.F.R. I suspect that when you connected the new drive's flex cable to the main logic board, you may not have pressed it securely into place, with the result that the drive is not comunicating properly (or at all, perhaps) with the computer. Double-check that connection by disconnecting it and then pressing it solidly down again; it should snap slightly into place when properly seated.
If that doesn't help, call MCE, explain the situation, and ask for advice. That flex cable is the only electrical connection between the drive and the Powerbook, so if it's solidly connected and the drive still doesn't work, the drive itself is suspect.

  • Has anyone upgraded to iDVD 5 with Combo Drive & external disc burner

I have an iMac G5 with a combo drive. I have purchased a Lacie d2 drive to burn slide shows from iDVD. The Mac recognizes the Lacie on the firewire input but says under system utilities "Disc burning: not supported". I would upgrade to iDVD 5 if this will support an external disc burner. Any suggestions.

Apple pays for permission to burn DVD's (something about MPEG2). However, they don't pay for each copy of iDVD sold. They pay for each DVD burner sold. Thus, they don't allow burning to external DVD burners...officially. Under the File menu, choose "Save As Disk Image". Once you have the disk image, you can use the resulting Video TS and Audio TS to burn a DVD using Toast. A version of Toast or some other burning software should be included with your external burner. I hope this helps.

  • Strange behavior with combo drive...

I've had my powerbook for a few years without any problems other than some slight noise from the secondary fan which I replaced a few weeks ago without any difficulty. The other day I noticed my powerbook froze up on me. I had no choice but to depress the power button to restart it. Force quitting would not work on the open apps or to relaunch the finder. After restarting I had the same problem. This happened twice. I tried resetting the pram and also followed the instructions on this post: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try these steps, in order, until the computer responds:
    1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
    2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
    3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)
Step 2 seemed to do the trick for me but I just tried to insert a blank CD-R into the drive but it ejects itself after a minute. I can hear the drive operating but the CD-R ejects itself. I cannot figure out while this occurs. I tried to insert a CD with data and the drive reads the CD without any problems and does not eject itself. It also does it with a blank DVD-R. What gives???
If anyone has any suggestions to help I would really appreciate it.

If you say that you have a combo drive, then the drive should be ejecting the DVD-R. If it's supposed to burn DVD's then that's definitely a problem. I'm not sure about the CD-R's though. I only think that it is a drive defect and may need replacing. Sorry about that! Good luck!

  • Problem with combo drive on Satellite P10

I have a Satellite P10-554 model running on XP SP2 english version. My combo drive works excellent with DVDs but when i insert a CD i get this message (and i cannot access the drive):
"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

    Hi
    This is a good tip.
But if it doesn't help you can try to remove the drive from the device manager.
Then after new reboot the OS should recognizes the drive again with the common settings.
    Maybe it helps

  • Working photographer needs help with hard drives and raid O decisions

Hi new here and also new to Mac well almost new been 20 years since i had a mac. i have a Mac Pro Book and this led to ordering the MacPro since I am a working photographer i made a complete switch in platforms so i have some questions and such but I did place a order on Friday for a 2.66 4gbs of Ram , 2 500 gb hard drive and a 30 in monitor and of course the ATI 1900 XT card so yes i am waiting like many for that card.
I put initial 4gb of ram since running CS2 will at least take a max of 3gb's in the memory cache . i plan on getting 2gbs more from OWC since that seems to be the only 3rd party ram at the moment that is working correctly from reading some of the threads here. Having 6gbs is a no brainer really given the amount of Raw processing that i do along with PS work plus having e-mail and other apps open at the same time. The ram to me is the easy part although expensive . My biggest issue is what to do with the 2 hard drive slots and Raid O or not but I will start a thread on that. But i will have 6gbs total for now and the bottom line is you can never have enough ram still holds true.
Now on to my diliemma with hard drives. I did have a raid O scsi 10k rapture and and 10 k scratch on my Dell box and I am just not sure what to do here. i ordered the 2 500 gb hard drive and I may just put them on the storage side of things than get 2 WD 150gb 10 k Sata drives. Now i could Raid O them for 300 gb and get a performace boast that way or i could keep them seperate and put everything on 1 150 drive and ue the second for scratch only. What i don't know is what Mac perfers and what works better. Not worried so much about failure of drives, thats just life in the big city stuff and you just have backups. What i more worried about is performance versus a waste . seems to me that Raid O may not even be needed with these new Intel boxes with all the horsepower going on. Now the other think I notice is the WD 150gb 10 k drives are 1.5 and not 3.0 so is it really faster than the 7200 3.0 single hard drives. I read barefeats shoot out and it seems just getting the right drives in 7200 and Raid O them maybe the answer.
Okay i am not the biggest geek on the planet but I do know my stuff but this is a area that i look for more knowledge on this. So if i can get some sound advice in this area. i know there are many photographers out there like me pushing hundreds of images that could use the same advice. Now let's leave the money end out , folks sometimes think more with there wallet than what works best not that I am opposed to saving money but after spending over 7 k already on this system it becomes a moot point. LOL

Ok your question is if you should RAID O the two 150GB Raptors or not.
I think it was wise for you to get a couple of them for a boot drive with "Time Machine" coming in the next version of Mac OS X. The second drive would make a excellent bootable backup and eliminating downtime if a boot drive dies on you one morning.
In fact any boot drive cloning software that is Mac Intel ready now would do you good.
Now Barefeats has run some tests, and I can pretty much back up what they say from my own experience.
Mac OS X and apps can be helped only so much by a faster boot drive, and a single 10,000 RPM Raptor is enough, RAID O a pair is overkill.
If you install everything on the boot Raptor and keep your space hogging files (except iTunes) in new folders on another drive, even a 7,200 RPM 500GB, the two drives combined is faster as there is nearly no wait. Both drives can be accessed at the same time. Keeping the boot drive slim keeps the stylus (arm) moving as little as possible to get all the small reads/writes Mac OS X needs.
I RAID O-ed my boot drives because 74GB was the largest they had at the time, so combining them gave me speed and larger storage. I hardly use the speed, it only comes in handy if by rare chance I duplicate a 20GB folder, then I can do it in half the time of a 7,200 RPM drive.
Some of the drawbacks of a RAID O set, especially as a boot drive is that I have to auto-clone the whole set to a external drive regularly (I actually do a couple). Since the data path is separated with a RAID O, any drive failure results in total data loss.
So if you RAID O those 150GB Raptors, your going to have to clone 300GB to a external drive (or another internal) regularly, like once a week. This will take considerable time and you can't use the machine while the cloning process is going on. Sure auto-cloning software like DeJaVu can be used at night/weekends, but why bother cloning more than you have to for no big speed increase?
However if your messing with huge Photoshop files that spill over your CS2 3GB RAM limit (you need to have a "scratch" thats as fast as RAM), duplicating large files and other heavy duty drive work, then a boot RAID O will come in handy. Just remember your initial performance of 185 MB p/s will drop about 20-25% when those drives are 3/4 filled. Still 140 MB p/s is extremely good and a no worry situation.
What is worrysome is anything below 80MB p/s (I'm talking uncached 4K write speeds under X-Bench) with a new boot drive and then as time elaspes that boot drive gets filled up and loses half or more of it's inital speed. 30 MB p/s is really slow. Beachball H&LL.

Do Erase W/Zero in Disk Utility all new drives before laying data on them. Drives get subjected to shock which causes bad sectors on the drive. Driver software uses your data as a guinea pig to test the sectors (which you might not be able to recover the file). Zeroing does this without your data, rewriting the bad sector map so your writes are much improved, OS is more stable. etc.

  • Please help with RAID driver update.

I need a little help with updating my RAID drivers. I have P55-GD65 motherboard and some SATA2 hard drives connected in RAID arrays. I am running Win7 64bit.
    I already downloaded and installed:
“Intel P55 AHCI / RAID Drivers Ver: 8.9.0.1023”
from the MSI support web page. The setup file installed the “Matrix Storage Manager” and  the “Matrix Storage Console”
On the same web page I see another download link:
“Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver Ver: 9.5.0.1037”
It looks like I already installed the manager with the previous driver. Do I need to install this one too? What is the difference between both?
Also when I open the “Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver Ver: 9.5.0.1037” I see 2 executable files:
    “iata_cd.exe” and “iata_enu.exe”
I read the “Readme.txt” provided, but I couldn't find information on what is the difference between the EXE files and which one I should use.

Use either one.  It doesn't matter in a functional way.

  • External Burner for macbook with combo drive and IDVD 6

    Hey everybody
I have been thinking of finally utilizing apples IDVD but as mentioned I have a combo drive
    so my questions are these
    1. What are some suggested external dvd burners for mac
    2. What is the process of setting up my mac os 10.4(with latest update) for an external burner

    Hi h
    1. LaCie seems to be most recommended in this forum. I got a ForMac one
(old but good when copying home brewed DVDs)
    2. Set-up ? Should work. Only thing that might be problematic is that using
iDVD is a hard disk space needing/consuming activity.
My goal is to at least free up 25Gb on the internal hard disk (iDVD uses only this)
after I've prepared the DVD in iDVD.
No USB/USB2 external hard disk drives - if needed use FireWire one.

  • Installing from iLife CD on an iMac G3 with Combo Drive

I am helping my son to upgrade to iPhoto 4 on his iMac G3. I sent him the iLife 2004 installation CD, not realizing that he had a combo drive. The install program tells him he must use the DVD. Is there anyway to bypass this? If not, I guess I'll have to send him the DVD.
    Thanks

    hello grk,
    I installed iPhoto 4 manually.
Try this: insert CD, try to find the iPhoto Package
(I guess it was the "resolve alias" on the main installer icon)
    open the iPhoto installer directly

  • Help with floppy drive

    help me install floppy drive

You should try somewhere else for that sort of information. The subject is rather off topic for a firefox forum.
Try somewhere that discusses building/making PCs/Computors or with dealing with Linux.
When you ask explain whether the floppy disk drive is already installed and built as an internal floppy drive or whether it is something you need to add. Also give some indication of the age of the computer, as many modern ones do not have floppy disks as standard and not even the ordinary connectors that used to be standard.
Maybe also explain why you need one, for instance floppy disks used to be bootable, whereas modern computers tend to be more flexible with what may be booted.

  • Help with Combo Box Component

I am creating an application with comboboxes and using action
script to load them. I can figure out how to change text color of
the choices in the combo box, but can anyone tell if it is possible
to make the text choices appear as different colors. For instance
if I wanted all of the choices to be black text, but for the third
    choice down to appear red.
    Thanks for the help.

You can set the backgroubd color if that helps.
To set the second item to have a red background, attach this
    to the combobox:
    on(open){
    dropdown.setPropertiesAt(1,{backgroundColor:0xFF0000})
    }

  • Help With Hard Drive Problem

So I'm setting up my new computer and am having a problem.  When I start it up it goes through the bios and whatnot.  But, if I have the hard drive hooked up, the system will go to a black screen and stay there.  I've tried it as the master to the CD-Rom and vice versa.  Both ways stall as described.  I can boot up the CD-Rom when it's by itself, but not with the HD hooked up.  The weirdest thing is that the bios menu sees the hard drive and everythings.  So I'm stumped. Please help.
EDIT: Computer stats below.  Also not that the CD-rom and hard drive are on the same IDE cable.

Quote from: Maesus on 10-August-07, 16:00:27
    the HDD is blank right?
Have you changed the boot sequence?
The hard drive is not blank, no.  I've thought about that, but don't have a way of erasing it until tomorrow or the next day.  I wasn't sure if that would really make a difference though.  The main reason I'm not sure about that is the fact that it won't boot the CD-Rom when the hard drive is plugged in.  Even if I tell it to only boot from the CD, it still goes to the same blank screen if I try it with the HD plugged in. As I said before, it will boot from CD if the hard drive is not present.  I find it really weird that I can tell it to only boot from the CD-Rom and it still freezes with the HD present.

  • Help with dvd drive - region code error

Hi, I really need to change the drive region code on my Ibook G4 (OS X 10.4.10) back to Region 2. I'm allowed to change it one last time.
But the trouble is, when I try and change it and click 'set drive region' it just comes up with an error message -70001, 'There was a problem changing the drive region code.'
I've reset the PMU and PRAM/NVRAM but it still does it.
Can anybody help me at all? It's driving me mad, I was banking on being able to change it back to my Region one last time...

Insert a DVD which is set to play in only one region; if you try using up your last change with a DVD that can play in some but not all regions, that error message will appear. Many DVDs which are set to play in region 2 will also play in region 4.

  • Help with combo boxes

I am currently building a site with flash / dreamweaver and
am attempting to add two or three combo boxe that will display data
and pictures from a database. Any ideas or assistance would be much
    appreciated...
    Many thanks in advance

    Sunil,
I'm attempting to use the data binding technique but I'm perhaps not understanding exactly where this should go.  For now I'm fine with having a static array that just lives locally on the page.   Each of my combo boxes are being populated using the
         mx:Array --> mx:Object logic.
I need to fire off an event to a function that is able to determine which selection(s) from the combination of the two combo boxes were chooses.  I'm accomplishing that by using selectedIndex property of the combo boxes id.  I then have 'n' number of unique Array Collections that are basically a three dimensional array containing the numeric percentage that I need to display graphically.  I need my function to be able to choose the appropriate Collection based on the combination of selected index(es) and then update my column chart accordingly.
My other confusion is how to do use my data binding at the chart level.  So my page is really nothing more than two combo boxes and chart that I need to change dynamically as the selections in the combo boxes changes.  Eventually I will use a webservice to connect to a .jsp page that is using DAO to retrieve the values from the database but right now I'm fine with fetching them locally just so I'll know I'm on the right track.
If it would help I can include the snippet of the code that I'm working on.
    Thanks for your help

  • Re-try: Partitioned '08 iMac, Win7, Radeon X1600, help with upgrading driver?

I've been trying to use information found on other threads to update my driver but have had no success; my software and cpu are somewhat older than what I've been reading about. So.... I'm going to try this again before taking the thing to the local fixit shop (I don't want to do that...) I love my Mac. But I love my Windows-only games.

The first part of your mcelog (the bit about " failed to prefill DIMM database from DMI data") strongly suggest one of the new RAM chips is defective. Start by simply putting the old one back in place and seeing if that helps. If it does, exchange the new faulty one with the seller for one that works. However, since you say yourself you aren't very tech savvy, it may be the case that you've simply purchased a RAM chip that is not compatible with your motherboard (although if both of the new chips are identical and the first one works, that may not be so).
When deciding to upgrade all the most vital hardware components of a machine, it's best to do it one piece at a time, and reconfigure the operating system to account for the new hardware. Uninstall old drivers, install new ones, change any personal settings related to the old hardware, reboot, make sure everything's fine and then repeat the process for every other new piece of hardware. Replacing everything at once without ensuring it will all work together increases the chances problems like this immensely---the problem itself may be very simple, but you've undertaken so many changes in such a short time that finding out what the problem is in the first place can be very complicated.
