Help with corrupted HD: how to back up files

ok so i had a problem yesterday: when i hit the power button, my macbook would stay at the white screen with the spining load indicator and the apple logo. same would happen when i started up while holding the option key. anyways i started it up with the original OS disk. in disk utilities i tried to repair the hard drive, unsucessful and is says this:
Invalid sibling link
rebhuilding catalog b-tree
the volume macintosh HD could not be repaired
updating boot support partitions for the volumes as required
ERROR: DISK UTILITY can't repair this disk...disk, and restore your backed-up files
how do i back-up my files?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
When there is an issue like that, often Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro can fix it. Disk Warrior is generally the preferred program. http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/index.html
You can then back up the files once you get the drive back in shape.

ICal with iCloud syncing - how to back up

Like many others, I have had problems with multiple entries on iCal. In my case, i probably stuffed up trying to fix it. I ended up with duplicate calendar items before I switched off mobile me.
I also updated iPad and iPhone 4 with OS5 thinking i could install Lion later, which I now have.
I kept a copy of iCal before I did anything, but can't seem to find a way to reinstall it instead of the mess I have. When I open it, it just wants to fix my current iCal which doesn't work, as the current calendar items are different to the ones showing before I backed up.
Any suggestions as to how I can just revert to the old iCal please?
BTW, I think Lion is great, and if I can fix my iCal it will be greater still.

Here is what I would do. There is no data on your iCloud calendar at iCloud.com. Correct? If any data remains there, remove it and delete any calendars there.
Turn off ICloud on all devices.
On your mac, I would Make a new copy of the calendars present. Highlight/select each calendar that is present, go to file menu select export and then export again. Save these files seperatley from your other back up.
Ok so now you have a clean iCloud at iCloud.com, and new and old back ups of the calendars on your mac.
1st we will test the new back ups. Delete all calendars in iCal on your mac. You may not be able to delete the home calendar but uncheck it. So your Mac iCal should now be empty. Double click on your new back up files and see if they recreate the calendars you saw before your last deletion. If they do, then you know you can get back to the same place you are now if your older back up doesn't work.
Assuming the above worked, then again delete all calendars on you mac. Restart your mac. Double click on the file Computers-Software iCal 161011.ics .
This should recreate your iCal calendars the way they were before. Then turn back on Calendar from the ICloud preference pane. Go to Calendar in iCloud.com and see if the new calendars show up there. If so, turn on iCloud on other devices.
If for some reason this doesn't work, then you can restore your current iCal calendar on your mac from the newest backups you just made.

How to back up Files on Disk Utility

My Mac Book Pro doesn't start. when I press the start button It chimes, apple logo, line loading and turns off. Once and again. I tried the Comand-option-P-R and nothing. Tried a lot of tricks I found online and nothing. Finally -And Im not sure how, I think it was the Comand-R opened the Disk Utility and could hit the repair the disk, It said that It couldn't repair -I have almost full capacity 499GB used- but cant remove files since I cant start the computer. Disk Utility told me to Back up Files and Restore -meaning it will wipe out the data, but i will have it on my back up- How do I back up using external hard drive. Thanks for any help.

You need to boot from your backup disk using:
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
      "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Once booted from the backup drive then:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
       it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the now erased internal drive. Source means the external backup drive.
Once booted from the backup drive you need to partition and format the internal drive:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

I need help with Compressor 4 settings to convert .mp4 files to .m4v for iBooks Author

I'm a curriculum design guy with no video background. I have Compressor 4, but don't really know much about how to best use it. I'd appreciate some help with getting the right setting for my project. Screen shots of settings would be much appreciated, since I don't know much video terminology.
I'm making an free iBook for students on WWII propaganda using old videos from the Internet archive.
I'd plan to use Compressor to:
1. Convert the .mp4 files to a .m4v that iBooks Author will accept. (I know I can use QT for that, but it increases file size)
2. Use Compressor to reduce file size so my iBook doesn't get too big
3. Get videos that look & sound the best, given the poor quality of the original source videos.

Help with Premiere Pro freezing after importing MPEG files

I have
had some files sent for me to edit which are MPEG I believe. They will import, but
as soon as I try and do anything with it, the whole thing freezes for several minutes! It is unworkable. I have tried waitin
g for the audio file to conform. I have tried rendering the work area. None of this helps. If it does play, it lasts for a few seco
nds with sound playing at what appears to be twice the speed! I normally wortk with DV files and these are fine. By the way, the files I am struggling with do play in media player/real player etc. I cant believe that premiere would not support this format. Even Movie Maker just about manages it! When it does freeze, it really freezes! As in it wont even let me shut down without literally ripping out the power cable!! Please help with simple English if possible, and sorry if I havent given you specifics that you would need. But I honmestly dont know as these were just files sent to me on a memory stick. It was filming from a camcorder, but not sure what type. The thumbnail says MPEG and the properties just says movie file. It is about 2GB for an hour I think. Thanks for any help. Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

12. Time Drawer (Commercial - similar to Time Machine)

How to back up files on IpodTouch gen 3 & add files from 2 computers

Hi
I have a iPod Touch (Gen 3) and add files (video, music, photos etc.) frequently on the office computer. Now if I try to add files from my home computer, I would lose my existing files that are already on the iPod, right?
How can I do a backup of what I have so far?
Also how can I add files from my home computer without erasing the rest of the files?
What else can I do to make this easier?

Help with itunes set up and back up

Up until recently, I have always kept my itunes on my external hard drive, mainly because I have 2 computers (a desktop and a laptop) and thought it was an easier way to move between the 2 and not get too confused. However, a couple of months ago I lost everything off my hard drive when it was dropped, and have been itunes-less ever since. I've now finally got round to setting it all back up - I have an old external hard drive with most of the itunes still on, but I have still lost quite a few of the songs/albums I've purchased since I swapped to the newer one that's now broken (I've heard that Apple MAY give you one, and only one, chance to re-download songs that you've purchased if you beg, but haven't tried that yet).
So, currently I have about 7000 items in my library, but they are all on my old external hard drive and I'm not sure what is the best way to set itunes up again and import all these. I think my friend originally set up my itunes to read files from my external hard drive, but my library is still on my C Drive (so when I open itunes it still has all my songs but can't locate them), and obviously this probably turned out not to be the best way to keep everything, so I guess I need the external hard drive as more of a back up, rather than the ONLY copy. I tried to import the files in, but ended up with 2 copies of everything (I'm really not the best at understanding itunes!!!).
Basically my question is, what is probably the best way to store my itunes across 2 computers, AND have a back up copy on an external hard drive, and how do I go about setting it all up? I want to be able to share the playlists and any newly purchased music across both computers without constantly getting myself in a muddle trying to copy various files etc.
Can someone help? I think I have itunes 10, and run Windows Vista on both computers.

How to actually get help with iWorks or how to return it

I have lost over an hour of work today trying to get some assistance from apple. Bought iworks and the serial number doesn't work. They route me to different people who can't seem to help me. I try to return it and the store doesn't help me. Does anyone know how to get the serial number accepted or how to actually get help from this company or should I consider buying the product a loss and warn colleagues within the university? Thank you!

I also bought iWork online and had it delivered to my office. I didn't want to carry the box home, so I stuck the disk/manual in my bag and threw the box away.
Well, was that a mistake! I realised upon installation that is exactly where the only copy of the serial number is printed.
Or so I thought.
I hit on the idea of going back to the Apple email that notified me of the shipping of my product. On there I found the serial number and simply cut and pasted from there to the dialogue box asking for it during install.
For me that worked. No problems with figures or letters being misread.
Don't know if that's any help.
