Help with crash (kernel panic) during new backup
I had problems with TM after 10.5.2 update. As discussed in other places, I decided to completely erase the parition on the FW drive and start from scratch. At this point, TM gets "stuck" after backing up about 250MB (already had 25 GB of 120GB backed up). It just doesn't move. In looking at Console (system log), I see 2 things of concern:
Macintosh DNS Responser [16]: Error getting external address 3 (this just keeps repeating over and over, and was present both before and after starting TM backup)
Macintosh quicklookd [834]: EXCEPTION CPMessageException (null) (that was only after starting TM backup and it got stuck).
Any help much appreciated

Kernel panics during TM backup
I have been having problems with kernel panics during Time Machine backups and I would like to find out if others have had similar experiences. If this is a problem unique to my configuration, then I need to do more work. If others are having the same issue, then perhaps I just need to wait until a fix is issued.
Some background, I am using TM on two computers, an early 2006 iMac and a first generation Aluminum 15" Powerbook. On the iMac, TM is now very reliable, on the PB, it will ALWAYS kernel panic at least once during a large backup, sometimes 2 or 3 times before it manages to finish the backup. Since I have been playing around with backup disk configurations, I've made several initial backups, so I've also seen quite a few kernel panics, but ONLY when TM is running a large backup.
Are you hit with kernel panics during TM backups? I see some discussion along those lines in this forum.
The most recent initial backup was with Spotlight disabled and it DIDN'T panic. This was unusual. As TM is adding files to the backup disk, Spotlight is busy indexing the new files at the same time. It is possible that the two are not playing well together on the lower performance machines, such as this 1.25 GHz G4. By adding the backup disk to Spotlight's privacy list, Spotlight is inhibited from indexing the backup disk.
- gwsFor information, this problem appears to be due to some unique problem with my particular computer.
I had been having 2 or 3 kernel panics every day. Finally, I did a Safe Boot and the panics ceased completely. Not one in the last month. Looks like it was some kind of corrupt data that the Safe Boot cleaned up.

Hard drive died with a kernel panic during time machine backup
after installing a new hard drive into my 13" macbook pro (mid-09), i used the time machine utility on the os x install disk to restore from my last backup. the restore went well and all my data was fine. however, after about 30 minutes of internet browsing, i got a random kernel panic and after rebooting the computer the new hard drive was no longer being recognized.
i have no idea what happened to the drive (it was brand new, just installed earlier today) but a major concern of mine is that time machine was trying to back up the computer when the kernel panic occured, so i had to reboot in the middle of taking a backup. could this possibly corrupt my time machine backups?
im really scared right now so any insight helps.

Please help with a Kernel Panic Log
I was wondering if anyone could help me with my wife's kernel panic log. I have reseated her ram twice, and did the command option p +r to reset pram and she is still getting them. I can boot in safe mode with no kp's. I definitely don't know what I am doing just reading as many posts as possible. The computer is a Macbook Pro 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo upgrade to 6gb of ram about 6mths ago. The most recent change she has made when getting her first kp was at her new job she logged on to the wireless network and said she was getting a lot of page erros from sites. They are a PC based network, and that's all i really know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Current Flash - Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.235. Preference panes are in /Home/Library/Preference Panes/ or /Library/Preference Panes/. Also, search for SIMBL and remove all instances if you find it. Use EasyFind 4.9.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
AppZapper 2.0.1
AppDelete 3.2.6
Automaton 1.50
Hazel
AppCleaner 2.1.0
CleanApp
iTrash 1.8.2
Amnesia
Uninstaller 1.15.1
Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Need help with Recurring Kernel Panic- [ WITH LOGS ]
For the past two weeks or so I have been getting a lot of Kernel Panics. Most of them happen when I select Restart or Shutdown. There have also been cases of Final Cut Pro crashing regularly, but I thnk the Kernel Panics are far more important to diagnose. I have not changes any hardware for at least a year. The machine has 4.5gb of RAM and 40% of the system drive free. I have run Disk Utility to repir the disk as well as the permissions, all coming back with no errors. The ONLY thing that I can think of that changed is that I purchased and ran Disk Warrior 4. It seemed to help tremendously with performance, however, it is the only thing that I can think of that has changed. I am also suffereing from some performance loss as well. I get at least one Kernel Panic a day. I have no idea what the KP mean, but they all look similar. I have posted the two latest ones below. Any help as to what might be causing this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Exception state (sv=0x5D502A00)Hello! I would be inclined to think you probably should re-install. The fact you said DW helped with performance indicates it found problems. My experience with OSX has been that mine has run pretty much perfectly for 3 years plus even though I tinker a lot and try out apps and have several dozen apps installed along with several haxies. It runs just as fast as it did when I first installed it as a fresh install. DW helps fix directory errors but it's not designed to do anything else. You could have bad blocks on the hard drive which could be causing the problem. I would erase using the zero data option and reinstall fresh. Ideally you would do this on a second partition or on another hard drive. If you only have one hard drive now is a good time to invest in another one so you can have a bootable backup for problem solving. Tom

Help with a kernel panic?
Hi, all,
My new (two weeks old) Macbook pro has been randomly restarting, sometimes two or three times a day. I talked with Apple Support and they had me repair the disc permissions, which wound up being quite lendthy ... something like 147 pages in Word when I copied and pasted the report. I've not had one since, but I'm hoping to get this nipped in the bud as I'm a photographer and need to get this guy stable so I can start taking it on jobs with me. I'm not tech savy enough to understand a panic report, so can anyone help with this one:

Can anyone help with these kernel panics?
I work for the NHS. Have spent most of my salary on Adobe Premiere Pro using a Intel Core Mac OS 10.5.8 which is supposed to be enough for the system requirements. Have spent all day shutting down my computer unable to start the software. If it does start it freezes and tells me to restart. This is not acceptable. Can anyone help??? Adobe cefrtai nly don't want to is there ahtyone out there with any solutions? I ahve checked the hard drive it is fine, have done all the usual checks to no avail. Cannot find anywhere to talk to Adobe, their website is a minefield of Groundhog Day!
I have the same problem with Photoshop purchased last year as part of a creative package. This is really annoying!Dear Wonderspark,

I hope that is more use. As I said, the software is successfully installed, but I cannot open Premiere Pro. Photoshop does open occasionally but rather like Russian roulette.
I also have the Creative suite and Dreamweaver is no problem, neither is Indesign. This makes no sense to me I would be grateful for any help. I have checked the hardware and the system is ok. I have tried re-installing the software after un-installing it but that made no difference. I obviously have turned the machine on and off because of the black veil that descends upon the screen during the kernel panic. Premiere Pro has alo frozen everything rather than causing a panic too. Help with recurring kernel panic
Hello,
I am a relatively new Mac user (past 8 months) and have had this MacBook Pro for the same amount of time. I am having a problem lately (w/in the last few months) where many different apps (Firefox, Parallels, Photoshop, Smultron, etc) that I run shut down intermittently and without warning. Also, now, several times a day, I will get a kernel panic. I am not sure what is causing this, and would appreciate any help you can offer. I thought this may have been caused by Parallels or Firefox, but I see this occur even when I don't use Parallels all day long.
Here is the latest kernel panic:

Thanks!Hi, just to update what happened.
I ran through a lot of suggestions listed by nerowolfe and just couldn't get it figured out.
I went back finally and did another Apple Hardware test, this time using the one that comes on the Apple install disc. (Previously, the TechTool Deluxe one did not detect any problems.) The Apple Hardware test finally found a bad RAM stick, so I removed the first stick of RAM and rebooted. No problems since then, so I am replacing it (still under warranty) with another memory stick.
Thanks for the links, and this is another example of the kernel panic being the cause of bad RAM. If nothing else, just do the obvious, remove one stick at a time, to see if that fixes the problem. -
Help with a Kernel Panic caused by NTFS filesystem
Hello All,
I need a little help trying to diagnose a reacurring kernel panic.
I originally thought it was being caused by Intego Virus Barrier, but that has been uninstalled for over a week now. On avergage, I get about 2 kernel panics a day. I have not been able to isolate why it panic's when it does. Looking at the Panic logs, I believe the issue to be with the Bootcamp partition, but before I go and reformat the drive, I wanted to check with the community to see if there was anything I can do. I have not launched into Bootcamp in probably over 2 months, but the panics started about 2 weeks ago.
I have performed the Extended Apple Hardware test several times and there seems to be no issue.
The consistant item in all the logs is
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.filesystems.ntfs(3.4)@0x14da000->0x1539fff
Any insight is appreaciated.
Thanks,
-Ben

Thanks for the response. I actually did not intend to post this in the Windows Software Category. I'm not sure how it ended up there as I thought I was in the MacBookPro discussion area.
So, I am running Mac OS 10.6.7 and get these panics. I have neither VirusBarrier or Little Snitch installed.
The kernel extension com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is what I am assuming is the culprit as it is consistantly listed in the backtrace.
I have read both of the mentioned articles. I do not seem to get the Kernel Panics when booted in safe mode, but I assume that is because the com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is not loaded when in safe mode and the Boot Camp partition does not mount (and cannot be).
So if Apple Hardware Test shows the drive as being healthy. The panic also mentions the active thread as mds. So I'm guessing that Spotlight is trying to index the NTFS partition and something in the middle is getting angry and causing the panics. Without re-formatting, is there any way to re-install just the Bootcamp extenisions for Mac OS X?
Or am I off base here? -
Please Help with Frequent Kernel Panics
Hi,
Over the last week I seem to be having constant kernel panics when using my 2011 iMac (OS X 10.7.4), they seem to happen primarily when using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and happen from about 5 minutes of using the program to about 30. Even if I am not using adobe though the kernel panic still happens after about 30 minutes. I uninstalled Adobe and all seemed fine, so I attempted to reinstall it, but part way through the process it kernel panic's again. I was wondering if it could be when I am doing stuff on system intensive programs, so I tried running a game of Civ V, and that didn't seem to have any problems.
Here's the specs of my iMac if it helps:

Sporadic crashes/kernel panics after switching to new mac
Hey everyone I'm really hoping that someone here can help me with a problem I've been having
In late December I accidentally water damaged my 2011 13' MacBook Pro, resulting in loss of keyboard function, however the computer was still workable. And I made do until the beginning of March when I bought a second hand 2012 13' 2.5GHz MacBook Pro.
I put the ram and harddrive from my old MacBook into the new one, and everything worked fine....for the first 5 days
However I began to experience crashes(kernel panics?) where any number of things would happen...
Most commonly the computer would freeze, briefly followed by an immediate reboot, followed by a error message saying something like "your computer restarted because of a problem"(after logging in)
It also presents as the computer freezing, with the sudden appearance of scattered purple/blue lines, and I am forced to hard reset. This is followed by the same error message as before.
I have also encountered problems with the computer not responding after being put to sleep(however this may have been fixed when I reset the SMC, hasn't happened for a while).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to things I could check or possible causes of this? Cause I have no clue.....
These problems have happened under all sorts of different conditions different, work loads, ect.
I Also can't find anything difinitive in the console in regarded to any specific crash, and there's nothing consistent between them.
Things I have done:
-Reset PRAM/NVRAM
-Reset SMC
-Repaired disk permissions
-Ran apple diagnostics
-Stress tested processor using "yes" command
-Tested ram with memtest
Any thought you have would be greatly appreciated!
~PHello iPhil,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your new-to-you MacBook Pro. It sounds like you have been on the right track in your troubleshooting. If you continue to have these intermittent but persistent kernel panics, you may find the information and additional troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful (apologies if you have already seen it):
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Support

Kernel Panic during Time Machine Backup
Hello everybody, two days ago I was doing a time machine backup, and I got the kernel panic message that suggested me to switch off the computer.
I did it, I restarted the computer and since then I cannot get the time machine backup to end without a kernel panic!
Side information: my HD of 250Gb has only 1gb left, OSX 10.6.6, everything updated,
I was listening itunes music during the backup.
have to be a solution!
Down here one of the latest kernel panic log:

my Time Machine backups regularly result in kernel panics. I'm on a MBP 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and backing up to a Time Capsule. I removed the entire backup, erased the HDD in Airport Utility, and started from scratch backing up via Ethernet. No other applications are open.
I verified and repaired the internal HDD with Disk Utility (booting from the Mac OS X Install DVD). HDD appears to be ok. Repaired disk permissions. Ran Apple Hardware Test, all ok. Removed the Preference file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (as per #A4. suggestion). But after all this, I still get kernel panics only after about 2 or 3GB into the backup (of approx. 140GB data total).
The Time Machine widget that I installed reported this after the reboot after the last kernel panic:
+Starting standard backup+
+Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://Marcus%[email protected]/Finger%20Lime%20HD+
+Mounted network destination using URL: afp://Marcus%[email protected]/Finger%20Lime%20HD+
+QUICKCHECK ONLY; FILESYSTEM CLEAN+
+Disk image /Volumes/Finger Lime HD/cif-mbp-foth.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups+
+Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb+
+Error parsing SystemMigration.log to determine source volume of system migration.+
+No pre-backup thinning needed: 146.69 GB requested (including padding), 893.87 GB available+
+Waiting for index to be ready (101)+
These are the kernel panic reports I'm getting. I took out the HEX bits ("snip"). They all report as the possible cause: "unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock". Can anyone suggest any solutions to this problem? Thanks heaps!

AppZapper
Automaton
Hazel
CleanApp
Yank
SuperPop
Uninstaller
Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
