Help with difference in speed Old MBP 17" vs NEW MBP 13"

I have the original 17" MBP (2.16 ICD, 2G 667MHz RAM, 120G HD) as well as the first MBA (I use for travel).
I have been thinking of combining the two and getting the top model 13" MBP.
I would use it with two separate 23" Cinema monitors while at my desk, and be able to travel easily with it when I am not at my desk.
My question is how much difference is my old 17" to the new 13"?
I do not do much video, some photo (iPhoto only) Mostly lots of web based things and LOTS of emails...
It would be nice to not have both but only have one. I am concerned the 13" is not as powerful as I think it is.

It is worth the extra for the 15" if I am not into big graphics?
Based on what you said earlier about your use being mostly web based the 13" would be perfect unless you just want the extra screen real estate and are willing to pay a premium for it.
Will the 13" run a dual monitor setup?
Yes

  • Help with data recovery on failed MBP HD Please

    Hello
My MacBook Pro 160 GB froze the other night and I had to hard reset it. Ever since I have not been able to turn it on and log into the OS (Mountain Lion). All I could do was get the Apple logo when you turn the MacBook on or a folder with a question mark (a couple times).
I took it to the Apple store even though I was out of warranty and they still helped (got to love Apple customer service!). The genious plugged in a cable and did his diagnosis and it froze tyring to load the into the hard drive but said that the OS was reconginzed in this diganostic machine so he said it was probably a harware issue and not software.
Long story short, they took it to the back and tried a new Hard drive cable, which was not the issue. They said that they were able to log into the HD in the back and that all my infomation was still on there but it was really slow to use and said I should replace the HD and transfer the data off of that failed drive onto the new one.
However, I dont now how to do this on a Mac. Do I get an enclosure or a "HD sled" as the genious recommended. Do I use software to recover, and is my data really safe? Please anyone, help me out. I have some pictures I really do not want to lose and form now on will make sure I buy an external HD to backup all my data via Time Machine.
    Thank you so much.
Will make sure to give you 10 points if you can help me or 5 if you give input.

Buy an enclosure for your old drive, and you will need to buy a new drive to replace it.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.
The above takes you through the entire process that you need to follow. This assumes you have removed the old drive, installed the new drive in the computer, and installed the old drive in an external enclosure.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. Firewire Direct
      4. California Drives
      5. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
The above sites also sell replacement hard drives. You are looking for 2.5" SATA Notebook-sized hard drives and enclosures. If you want good performance spend a little extra on the hard drive. Look for 7200 RPM drives with 16 MB cache. You are looking for a drive with SATA 3.0 Gb/s support with a capacity of around 500 GBs that is not more than 9.5 mm high.
Any cheap USB enclosure will be suitable for the data transfer. You should find one under $25.00.

  • Can anyone help with email in my old G4 17"  ??

My G4 17", bought December 2004, is considered an antique by Apple, and no longer supported. (I now mostly use my early 2011 MacBookPro.)
But the big screen on by G4 is very useful for Sibelius 4, the music program I mostly use (Sibelius 7 in the MacBookPro - but much too fussy for me.)
Sibelius 4 in the G4 continues to work flawlessly.
But my email account recently sort of died. It's  POP account (whatever that means). I can no longer receive messages, BUT I can still create and
send new messages, and of course forward any saved message to myself in the MacBookPro.
ALSO:  if I have to shut down the G4, it usually reopens with a horizontally divided display, and it usually takes many restarts before it will open
will a full screen display (seems to reopen correctly more often if left in a cool place overnight.)
Can anyone help with one or both these issues? I want to keep the G4 going as long as I can.  BTW, I don't use it for browsing anyone, Safari installed,
because it is now so slow. The MacBookPro handles all that for me.
Thanks very much, James Johnson in Plattsburgh NY (where it is still cold and wintry, o f--k)

To RCCHARLES: THANKS !!!!  I did the safe boot start, following the link you provided, then waited, and waited, and waited, and ---
Well that is interesting. Amoung other things safe boot does:
-- check and fixes up your file system.  The files system allows you to keep files on your harddrive.
-- Does all video rendering in software.
You could have a one time glitch or harddrive is slowly failing.  If you never replaced the harddrive, it is time for a new one.
You may want to consider getting a new harddrive.  The easiest way is to get an external drive.  No disassembly of the machine is required.
You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer [ a few G5's will boot from USB ].
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
    I'd give OWC a call. 1-815-338-8685.
    FireWire 800 + USB 3, + eSATA
    save a little money interface:
    FireWire 400 + USB 2.0
This web page lists both external harddrive types. You may need to scroll to the right to see both.

         (1) USB 3.0 Port (Up to 500MB/s / 60MB/s)
         (1) eSATA Port (Up to 300MB/s)
Has a combo firewire 800/400 port.  Not sure what this is.  Looks like you will  need 400 cable.

  • Need help with a slow mid-2009 MBP

Hello - I have read various threads on the subject of slow running MBP's and have attached Etrecheck results. I am running Yosemite and have the latest updates (as of today at least!). I don't seem to have any of the problem software that others have suggested removing - but am sure there is something I am probably missing. My MBP is going slower and slower by the day - especially if I want to use Lightroom, then it comes to a screeching halt. I do seem to be able to use Safari and Word at the same time, but they tend to get pretty slow after a time as well. Any and all recommendations greatly appreciated! Please note though, that I do not have the ability to upgrade to SSD at the moment, but maybe can manage new and increased RAM (I think my only options are to get 2 4x4's or a single 8?) if thats the only option. Cheers!

First, get rid of "Memory Clean," which is at best useless. That alone might solve your problem. If not, see below.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Help with Straight Talk on old Verizon Iphone 4S Data Apn

So I have had an old Iphone 4s that once worked on Verizon but I had been using it for over a year as just an IPOD basically with a GPS for Golf app and Music etc.  I saw posts about this bring your phone to Walmart and go onto Straight Talk for $45 a month for everything.  Sounded good so figured I would try.  I purchased a micro Sim for Straight Talk that said it was "compatible with T-Mobile" I didn't know what that meant but figured it was Straight talk and it was a Micro Sim which it didn't look like I could get from Walmart.  I got the Sim and unlocked my old Verizon Iphone.  I was able to get the Phone working, went through many pains to get Web working but at this point I still can't get Apps that need to connect to the internet to work.  Has anyone else figured this out?  So again I can use the Phone, I can Text so I have MMS, I can surf with Safari and Maps works without Wifi but if I want to use BofA app or Ebay app that has to use data plan It says it cannot connect to the internet or some message saying it times out.  Any idea what more I need to get my full IPhone working on Straight Talk.  Also even though I'm on Straight Talk up in the left corner it says T-Mobile, is it supposed to?  Not new to Apple but definitely new to straight talk and or any other carriers other than verizon (which everything worked for but was too expensive!!).  Thanks for anyone that can help.

That means you hacked the phone.
Sorry, the terms of use here prohibit anyone from helping you.
    Good luck.

  • Help with drop in speed...

I used to get 6.4Mb/s regularly when I ran a speed test. Since a recent migration about 2 weeks ago I get maximum of 256k/s. I have run a test and it says my Configured Download Throughput Speed in 250k/s - Does this mean the maximum I can get with that setting is 250k/s? I have tried calling the "help" desk but they can't seem to understand the problem. If I transfered to another ISP would they be able to change this setting? Sorry if Im missing the obvious. Any help gratefully received.

What speedtest have you run? The bt one? What figures does that show, and what do you mean by 'migration'?

  • Will Extreme Help With Network Drive Speed ...

I was happy with my Snow Airport until I bought a ethernet based network attached storage. It takes forever to copy any big files and streaming a dvd file for watching is very choppy.
I am considering Extreme base station. Will you be able to stream a DVD file fast enough to watch? Anyone, Anyone?

You mention you have a Snow Airport. That model only has 802.11b - about 500-800K/s on a good, quiet network.
You talk about buying the new Extreme model. That will get 1,500 - 2,500K/s on a good, quiet network.
That will let you watch the DVD with 'less' choppyness, but it still won't be as good as reading straight from the DVD.
Typically if you care about watching DVDs, I'd suggest using a DVD ripper to turn it into a Quicktime / DIVX movie of some sort, which would then be small enough to easily view over even your Snow Airport BS's network (and would be great with the Airport Extreme BS).
I can't agree with any of the suggestions from the prior poster. The issue is unlikely to be RAM (assuming you have enough to run OS X and aren't running other tasks in the background) or NAS speed; your network speed is vastly faster than your wireless network speed, so I wouldn't even worry about that.

  • HT6170 help with changing password for old email address

I changed my apple id to my new password over a year ago.  Trying to restore my iphone and its asking for the password for my old apple id (old email address) which I no longer have access to.  Tried the 'answer questions' to reset but it won't accept my valid birthdate.  How can I make this prompt for my old email address go away and make it ask for my new one (new apple id).  A similar issue is that iCloud keeps popping up asking for the password for my old email address as well.

You can't link to your new account (you created a new iTunes account, you didn't update your existing account ?) until removed removed the activation lock to your old account - you can then link it to your new account in Settings > iCloud.
If you can't get the password for your old account reset via http://iforgot.apple.com then try contacting Support in your country, after confirming your id and that it's your account they should be able to reset it for you.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT5699
If your country isn't on that page then try this form and explain and see what they reply with : https://ssl.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html

  • Help With iTunes Recovery From Old Hard Drive

Hi, recently I had A PC issue where I needed to replace my hard drive. I was originally running XP on a 500 GB drive, I didn't want to loose all my flies on that drive so I reinstalled XP on A 80 GB drive. I now running XP off the 80 GB drive (C:) have access to the files on the 500 GB drive (D:). I am worried about reimporting my music because I have more than 200 GB of music so it wont fit on the drive C: & also I have manually tagged all my music in iTunes and from my experience in the past re-importing may loose/revert my personal tagging. I will note I like to have iTunes manage my library. I was thinking if I move the iTunes library file from D: to C: it will put ! next to all 20,000 songs asking me to manually relocate all of them, but what if after that I change the iTunes location in the preferences to match the D: location would that resolve the ! file location? Any way I'm stuck any input would be appreciated. Thank You.

As long as you don't have an existing library that is synced with a device or holds oodles of carefully crafted playlists, ratings etc. then...
Hold down shift as you start iTunes. You should get an option to choose or create a library. Click create, browse to root of the external drive and click save so that your library is say X:\iTunes where X: is the letter of your external drive. All new content downloaded to the library will stay on the external drive.

  • Getting new Hard Disk. Need help with moving files from old one.

Hey guys so here is my dilema. So I have a Lacie 500GB Hard Drive and made the mistake of accidently deleting all my backups.db into the trash but thankfully never emptied that. There was no way to put it back into the backups folder so it caused me a lot of distress. I have decided to grab a portable hard disk instead such as the Western Digital. Heres my thought. I really only want to transfer a few things from the Lacie such as photos, movies, and a few documents from all the backup dates but nothing else. Is there a way to maybe automate so that certain files will transfer over instead of it all?
    Thanks in advance!
On a sidenote, if you have any suggestions for portable, small, lightweight, yet large capacity (at least 1TB) portable hard drives let me know!

    Lacie is a Seagate drive
To move specific files, open the backup database (time machine, backups.db). When you open Time Machine and select a date to restore from, you should see a Finder like view of that particular backup.  Navigate through the backup the same way as you would through the Finder and choose the folder or files you wish to restore.
