Help With DVD Recorder Purchase

I would like to purchase a DVD recorder that is fully compatible with IMovie. Can any one please suggest a brand that they have liked. There are lots of recorders that now say they are compatible, but I have my doubts. Any assistnace would be greately appreciated. This is mainly for creating DVDs of my family movies. I would like to keep expenses under 150 if possible.
Thanks

Hello curycork,
Your choice of DVD burners is up to your personal choice. The main thing is to make sure it has a Firewire connection and not only USB2. I have a LaCie that cost around 200 bills.
Here's a link to a recommended burner under 150 bills.

  • Need Help with DVD recorder (HDMI) to record off DVR

I purchased a philips dvd recorder a few years ago and need  help in setting up to record my DVR program recordings. The philips user manual is not very helpful being I'm trying to set-up with just using HDMI cables.  I have a HDTV (Vizio) with a HDMI port; a DVD recorder with HDMI port and my Verizon set-top box have a HDMI port.  How do i get it all to work and be able to record/copy programs from DVR to my DVD recorder?   Do anyone have suggestions on how to set up wiring.  Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

First keep in mind that DVD is not an HD format, so you will not be able to record HD shows in HD; they will be in letterboxed 4:3.
The FiOS STB only has one HDMI (out) port. Therefore, you will need to use some other output from the STB to the DVD recorder. Component, or even composite/RCA, because it's not going to record in HD anyway to DVD, will work just fine. Then you want to set your DVD player to whatever input you used to connect from the STB; i.e. mine uses "Input 1" for my composite connection.
If you turn on your STB and DVD, this will record whatever the STB is outputting to a DVD if you press record on the DVD recorder. This includes all of the program menus and any other on-screen graphics on the STB, and this means you cannot change the channel if you are recording from your STB. You can shut your TV off, but you will not be able to watch another show while recording one to DVD.
Your DVD player might give you an HDCP message at first when the recording starts if it's getting an HD input, but that should go away after a few seconds, at least for my Panasonic DVD recorder with a composite connection.

  • Item text in Purchase Order getting updated with info. record Purchase Order Text

    Hello All,
I am working in a roll out project and facing issue in text repeating twice for the line item in the Purchase Order for the new company code for which rollout is happening
    Issue:
Item text in Purchase Order getting updated with info. record Purchase Order Text
    01) PO Text is maintained in the material master under "Purchase Order Text" tab
    02) The PO text that is maintained in material master is getting updated in the Purchase Info. Record
    03) When Purchase Order is created, the "Item Text" gets updated in the Purchase Order automatically only for the new company code for which rollout is happening. when printed, this results in the text getting duplicated twice
03.1) this behavior is not observed in the Plants/ Company code that is already Live
    Configurations in the system:
The copying rules for the "Texts for Purchase Orders" is
Source Object = "Info Record", Source Text="Purchase Order Text", Fix="*"
We have modified the Purchase Order form to print one of  the condition types maintained for calculating the tax. Other than this there is no change to the plants that are already live.
I could not locate any "Purchase Organization" / "Company Code" / "Plant specific configuration.
Am I missing any configuration or where can I look in what is causing this error.
Request help from the experts in the forum.
    with Regards,
    Dhandapani R

There is no company/purchasing/plant specific customizing for purchase order text.
The customizing copying rules for the "Texts for Purchase Orders" affects all equally .
If the text in the purchase order in ME23N is already filled different to other plants, then you either have a modification in place, or the texts are differently maintained in the referenced data (vendor, material, info record, contract)

  • HOW DO YOU GUYS DEAL WITH APPLE.. SO CONFUSING...NEED HELP WITH SPECS FOR PURCHASE OF IMAC 21.5

Hi guys, been reading your forums, blogposts, etc and am getting more confused.  I'm just a video girl trying to produce meaningful content through web videos for small to mid sized businesses and want to come over from the dark side.
Good news,, I dont need a super giant system,  I do simple editing for web videos, minimal graphics, no motion graphics, no animation etc. currently using CS4, will probably end up with 5.5.
I want to get imac 21.5 or 27 if i have to..  So here's the question we all have,,, what do I really need besides an Apple fairy godmother to figure this crazy stuff out?????
I want to be able to have firewire add on, but the rest is what I need help with.   So i've been looking at cs6 specs, even though im not there yet, eventually will be,, so just need to run cs4 now and build from there.  I also want to eventually move to final cut down the road so I want imac able to upgrade to final cut.
WHAT DO I REALLY NEED MINIMALLY FOR NOW?  WHAT CAN I GET LATER IF i CHOOSE TO DO MORE AND NEED MORE POWER?
    cs6:
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
    Mac OS X v10.6.8, v10.7, or v10.8**
    4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
4GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
Additional disk space required for preview files and other working files (10GB recommended)
    1280x900 display
7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured, recommended)
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (SuperDrive for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features
Optional: Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU-accelerated performance
Any responses would be great.  I know you guys are busy answering the really high end tech questions

All the current iMac models (both 21.5" and 27" with OS X Mt. Lion 10.8) will run CS4, 5.5 and 6 just fine.  They will also run Final Cut Pro X just fine.  Ditto for most any application you may want to use.
Below are some notes (specific to your apparent requirements) that may help you with your purchase decision:
Notes on purchasing a 21.5" iMac
All 21.5" iMacs come with 8GB RAM but you cannot add more later.  I strongly suggest getting the maximum RAM (16GB) when you order the iMac.
The basic hard drive is a 1TB 5400rpm drive.  It will work fine with Adobe CS but you will probably want the added speed of the optional 1TB Fusion drive for better performance. Some people will recommend/argue for one of the optional SSD drives instead, but they are very expensive and still only come in relatively small capacities - I don't recommend the SSD drives.  Get the Fusion drive and spend any extra money on a good external hard drive for backup and/or extra storage instead of an SSD.
Notes on purchasing a 27" iMac
All 27" iMacs come with 8GB RAM and you can add more later, up to 32GB
The basic hard drive is a 1TB 7200rpm drive - it will be fine with Adobe CS.  There are upgrade options to a 3TB 7200rpm drive or a 1TB or 3TB fusion drive - these will be fine also.  There are also SSD drive options, but I do not recommend them. (Same comments as above.)
Notes on all the current iMacs
iMacs no longer come with built-in CD/DVD drives.  If you need one, you will need to purchase the Apple Superdrive accessory drive ($79)
All of the iMac graphic processors (GPU's) are compatible with Adobe CS 4, 5.5, 6
It is very difficult to impossible to change or upgrade the hard drive later on, so don't buy low-end thinking you can add a better internal hard drive later.
Be aware that Macs always come with the latest (most recent) version of OS X.  And OS X Mavericks (10.9) is due to be released soon (in the next month or two).  There is no guarantee that the older Adobe CS 4 or 5.5 versions will run on OS X Mavericks.  If you cannot upgrade to CS 6 in the near future, you may want to purchase now rather than after OS X Mavericks is released.
For what it's worth, I'd recommend the 27" iMac if your budget can afford it.  You will appreciate the larger screen size and added capabilities over the years you will use the computer.

  • Replace VCR with DVD recorder

This might seem an obvious question but I'm wanting to replace my VCR with a DVD recorder. I'm confused about needing one with a tuner or not. Is it just like the VCR? I have straight cable form the wall into the VCR into the TV. Is it the same or do I need one with a tuner? On most I don't see a place where the cable goes into the recorder.
Will someone help to unconfuse this old timer?
    Thanks

  • Help with inserting records conditionally in another table

I need some help on this task please. I have a table with some records like so
    Table1
    Column1   Column2   Column3      Colum4
    1                 Name1    Lastname1     1,2
    2                 Name2    Lastname2     3
    3                  Name3    Lastname3     NULL
    4                  Name4    Lastname4     1,3
So the last column, Column4 has the number of the column that the values got changed. So the values on the first row on the Columns 1 and 2 got changed. So I have to insert those values in another table and the same for the other records.
    Table2
    Column1   Column2    Column3
    1                Name1     NULL
    2                 NULL      Lastname2
    4                 NULL      Lastname4
Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

  • Help with DVD authoring process

I've been reading hundreds of forums and discussions over the last week the more I read the more confused it all becomes.
Working with Sports AVCHD Footage from a Canon HG10
    Import into FCE
Export to QT "not self contained"
The quality looks good when the QT is opened in QT player.
My concern is when its imported into iDVD or TOAST and encoded/compressed to Mpeg2 the quality has been lost the sharpness has gone. Have tried numerous settings and combinations within iDVD and Toast 9 but still no improvement.
Does the QT movie need to be encoded/compressed with another application to retain the quality?
What about FCP does that have a compressor/encoder which can to it.
Do I need to purchase DSP to get the quality?
All you pros out there any information, tips, processes, ideas anything to get a quality DVD

The video is 90min long of sports footage
I'm not sure about Toast, but iDVD uses uncompressed audio in the final DVD, what means that A LOT of your available space and bandwidth will be taken just for the audio and then, it needs to encode your video to a lower quality to fit in your disc (single layer?).
Using Compressor lets you encode your audio to Dolby 2 (AC3) and it will give you more space for your video and then, you can get a better encoding quality.
    Hope that helps !

  • Need help with Mac Pro purchasing decision

I've read preliminary reviews on the new Mac Pro, and I'm ready to upgrade my current Mac Pro (which is Dual 2.4 Ghz Quad-core with 32 GB RAM).  But I'm going through some major turmoil in the decision.  My current Mac Pro, aged as it may be, has been good to me, and when it needed upgrading, it was so easy to do.  I installed an additional two internal hard disks, giving the Mac Pro 3 TBs of internal storage.  RAM upgrade was a breeze, and when the graphics card went out, I was able to buy and install a replacement without a hiccup.
I love the low profile of the new Mac Pro, albeit I'll still be putting it on the floor - I don't like having my desktop computer in my desk work area.  And it looks like upgrading the RAM in the new Mac Pro is pretty simple (although horribly expensive).  I would require a CD/DVD drive, so that becomes a piece of "stuff" I have to clutter my work are with.  However, most importantly, the internal storage issue, FOR ME, is huge.  Without the ability to add internal drives, getting the 1TB flash storage is a must, but sooooooo expensive.  AND.. I still need additional storage (more than half of my current 3 TBs is in use).
Moreover, the whole lack of upgradability has me concerned that the new Mac Pro may disappear like the G4 Cube.  I haven't seen any rave reviews of the new Mac Pro overall.
    But I need to upgrade.
I have configured a new Mac Pro on the Apple Store about 100 times now, but never making the purchase for all of the above reasons, as well as the $5K price tag that it keeps ending up at.   I even started looking at refurbished Mac Pros (newer than mine, but the same old huge silver case).  The advantage is that it's upgradeable, and I won't end up with an optical drive or external hard drives cluttering my desk space.
The truth is, every time I go to buy, either a new Mac Pro, or a refurbished one, I hit a wall.  I'm walking the fence, wondering if I should walk it until a newer Mac Pro shows up with more expandability options (although it seems unlikely since Apple's direction seems to be form over function).
The new Mac Pro has been out for awhile, so I am looking for feedback from people who are kind of in my shoes, but already bit the bullet.  I don't want to encourage replies of regret, but I also would prefer the truth over grandiose reviews simply to justify making the leap (and dropping some huge bills).  It happens... "I just spent 5 grande, I better **** well love it, and I'll make sure everyone else thinks I do!"   ;-)
Please share your experiences.  How have you gotten around the lack of upgradeability on the internal storage?  I have had bad experiences with external drives in the past.  Firewire drives were fast and furious, but the were not as reliable as internal drives.  USB drives lag, and that dreaded spin up time every time the Mac OS does something that wakes up all the drives, even if the external drives weren't actually being accessed (never had that problem with Firewire drives, maybe because they were always spun up?).
Anyway, I don't want my buyer's pain to turn into buyer's remorse, so I appreciate all the wisdom any of you would be willing to share.
    Thanks,
    Bill

I'll offer my comments although there are others much better qualified to answer than I am.
First, the reason I bought the machine that I got was that I found an "open box" deal at a local retailer and got a substantial discount from the normal list price. Otherwise, I might not have gone to the nMP quite as quickly as I did. Regarding ram and the ssd drive, both of these can be upgraded at some later date if I find that is needed. The ram I will probably bump asap, filling the one empty slot with likely an 8gb OWC module.
To run your VGA monitors, you will need 2 passive mini-display port to VGA adapters. You can buy these pretty much anywhere, the Apple ones are superb quality at a price but other options are out there. These will plug into 2 of the Thunderbolt ports on the nMP.
Regarding cpu's and gpu's it gets a bit confusing. Basically right now it depends on the software that you are going to run. It is not likely coincidence that FCPX 10.1 came out basically at the same time as the nMP, as it really highlights full use of the multicore cpu's plus the dual fast gpu's. FCPX really screams on the nMP.
Right now, it seems more video software is making optimum use of both the multicore cpu's and dual gpu's in the nMP. Other software, most notably photo software that should also benefit, is lagging behind. For instance (going only from memory) Adobe software is not very good at using multi-core cpu's nor does it use multiple gpu's either. You can find comparisons of running Photoshop filters on a 3.7ghz 4-core vs the (slower clock speed) 6 or 8 cores and the 4-core comes out close or even faster in some tests because Photoshop uses only a single core, which on the 4-core machine is faster.
However, this is a pretty specific instance and generally buying the fastest cpu and gpu that you can afford is a good plan. Especially so for the gpu's as right now, the video may end up being the only component that does not end up with some sort of upgrade option in the foreseeable future.
If I was going to order a system under the circumstances you have stated, the 6-core with the D500 gpu's sure looks like the sweet spot in the lineup, and probably money well spent. After I would probably upgrade the ssd next, since in order to upgrade it later you have to remove a perfectly good ssd since there is only one slot. Personally I am ok with the 256gb as my boot and system drive, since with Thunderbolt you have basically PCIe access to an external box that can have either Sata or PCIe expansion for whatever storage you can afford.
As I said earlier, right now I am going cheap and using Apples Thunderbolt to firewire cable, which is allowing me to run my existing Lacie firewire drives in a daisy chain just as I did on the old MP.
Upgrading the ram at purchase or later is your choice, there are certainly less expensive options but with only 4 slots you have to weigh the cost of discarding or trading in the original Apple ram when you decide to swap it out for bigger modules. Plus not all ram can be mixed and matched, you may have to remove all the existing ram in order to add just a single high capacity (16gb or larger) module.
Again, hope I have helped more than adding to your confusion.

  • Need help with MIDI recording...

    Hi Fellow Logic Express Users,
I recently purchased an iMac Intel Core Duo with the Logic Express software program. I have been doing a lot of studying and have created over 25 tunes since I purchased it back in Febuary of 2006.
If there is anyone out there that knows how to perform a mass MIDI dump all at once from my Roland JW-50 Workstation onto the Logic Express through the M-Audio Uno MIDI port I would appreciate your help.
Through the years I have written a lot of music of which I have on floppy disks that load easily enough one track at a time, but I would like to see if it is possible to load all of the tracks at one time onto the Logic Express.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who knows how to do this. Thanks!

  • Help with deciding camcorder purchase

    Hello all,
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in a right forum. I'm seeking advice/input on camcorder brand that is mac compatible to purchase. We had JVC HD, which was absolutely crazy to convert onto quicktime, so we wold like to get mac compatible/user friendly camcorder in the price range up to $1,000. We'll be using camcorder to tape our babies and their milestones....thanks in advance.

"..can you explain the difference between Minidv tape vs. mini dvd?.."
    Yes.
iMovie is a program which edits anything recorded on small video tape cassettes called "miniDV" cassettes. They look like this:
"MiniDVD" discs are small DVDs, which look like this:
iMovie CANNOT edit anything which is stored on mini (..or full-size..) DVDs, unless the material on the DVD is first passed through some other program to re-encode it into a different form.
That's because the video stored on a mini (..or full size..) DV tape is in 'DV' format, and consists of a series of separate video 'frames' ..a bit like the frames of a film, or the individual shots you take with an ordinary camera.
iMovie cannot edit the video stored on a (mini or full-size) DVD because it's stored in a different format called 'MPEG-2', and it consists of only occasional complete frames, plus descriptions of how the video differs, over the next second or two, from that individual 'key-frame'.
So most of the frames on a DVD are "virtual frames" ..they don't really exist, except as descriptions, such as "the eyes which were at such-and-such a position in Frame 1 have now to moved a bit to the right".
A DVD player takes these descriptions, and reconstitutes the actual frames from these descriptions, then shows them on your TV screen (..or in the miniDVD camcorder's viewfinder). It uses built in fast circuitry to do that.
iMovie cannot edit those "virtual frames", and other software, such as 'MPEG Streamclip' has to be used to rebuild them into real, editable frames. This can be a longwinded business, and is nowhere near as fast as the immediate replay of DVD frames in a proper DVD player.
There is also - despite what it looks like when you play a DVD of a Hollywood film - some loss of quality when video is recorded onto a DVD, and even this loss can't be restored when 'actual' frames are rebuilt from the 'virtual' frames. So the quality of camcorder videos shot in miniDVDs is seldom as good (..unless you shoot in 'high-definition'..) as the quality of video shot onto miniDV tapes. (..In order to fit video onto those tiny discs, the video is 'compressed', and this irretrievably loses a little of the original quality..)
So why do camcorder manufacturers make miniDVD camcorders?
    (1) You can jump back to any part of the video without long-winded rewinding.
    (2) You can easily post - in the mail - a miniDVD of a movie you've just shot.
    (3) You can slip the miniDVD into most DVD players, and instantly have your movie on a TV.
    (4) The DVD mechanism is simpler to make than a tape mechanism.
But what you CANNOT do - and the manufacturers don't mention this - is easily EDIT it ..although many miniDVD camcorders do come with a rather poor version of an editing program which runs on PCs.
..And yes: Canon, Sony, Panasonic miniDV tape camcorders are compatible with Macs and with iMovie. But they generally come without the necessary 'FireWire' or 'i.Link' or 'DVD' cable to connect the camcorder to a Mac (..they usually come with a USB cable, instead..) so you'll need to buy a "4-pin-to-6-pin" i.Link or FireWire or DV cable in order to connect the camcorder to the Mac.
Oh; and Canon camcorders generally don't work with a Mac when an external FireWire hard disc is also connected to the same Mac ..but ignore that: plug in the camera, and it'll work with a Mac.

  • Please help with an urgent purchase issue

    Hello all
I have finally decided that since I am planning a trip to US it would be a wonderful opportunity to purchase a Mac and fulfill my dream!
Despite the fact that I was thinking of purchasing an iMac for a desktop computer (my office laptop is a windows 8) I ended up in selecting a MacBook Pro 15 retina as a desktop replacement combining increased portability and enhanced specifications. The use is strictly personal meaning transferring and listening to music, home movies editing, watching movies, Internet and generally transferring all my home staff to apple ecosystem using also external drives.
Now the serious staff: since  I have a one time opportunity ( the trip is not repetitive) I would extremely appreciate your help in the following:
    - my current selection is with 2,7 ghz quad core i7 with 8  gb ram and 512 flash. How is this configuration compared to the basic one? Basically I chose the 2.7 because of the relatively small price difference and the increased hard drives because of future programs installations (all storage will be done in time capsule and external drives)
    - since I have to purchase it now when Mavericks are released will the update require payment (based on your experience from the past)
    - how do the above compare to the new MacBook Air (if it is worthwhile I would go to an enhanced version of the 13")
My true apologies for the length of my message but any help is invaluable to solve my confusion
    Many thanks in advance.

My true apologies for the length of my message but any help is invaluable to solve my confusion
    Many thanks in advance.
We do not know yet what Mavericks will cost or what machines Apple will update for free but based on past experience it will probably not be a free update unless you purchase the computer after Mavericks has been released to the public. As recent operating system upgrades have been relatively inexpensive - Mountain Lion was $20 - I wouldn't worry a lot about this.
I agree with your choice of the 512GB SSD. The bigger the better as application files and data are only going to get larger. The faster processor may not make enough difference for your intended uses to make it worth the extra money however.
The retina display on the MacBook Pro is quite a bit better than the MacBook Air.
    Best of luck.

  • Need an expert to help with DVD Player app crashing

I'm not sure why, but my DVD Player app won't launch. I don't think I added anything new that would cause this change. I tried restarting, repairing permissions, but beyond this I'm not sure where to go next. Can anyone make heads or tails from this and offer a suggestion?

Tried deleting the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist preferences (found it in three different locations and trashed them all. Still no luck getting the DVD olayer to launch. Crashes immediately. Unfortunately, I have no idea what this is:
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000
Any other suggestions would be great! I just don't know how to read these crash logs and am hoping someone who speaks that language could be of help. Anxiously awaiting a reply...

  • Please help with A record and MX record!

Guys please help - our IT guy disappeared and we changed the hosting over the weekend. He did setup exchange server for all the emails so now i am trying to recreate all the settings in bluehost for email and the bluehost is asking whats A record for our
Exchange server. Forgive me but i am not an IT guy... where do i find the A record for our exchange server? I would greatly appreciate it if somebody could point me into that direction.

If the DNS A record for mail.mydomainname.com is currently pointing to your Exchange server's external IP address then I would imagine that's setup correctly.
Name servers are those used to find out where to get the DNS records for a domain, eg it tells people doing a DNS lookup the address of your DNS server(s) so they can query them to find the required records. As such I'm unsure whether you actually mean name
    servers or not.
Anything that ends in a .local address is definitely a local record, eg it is only used internally on your local network. On the internet there's no such thing as .local, so server1.mywebsite.local definitely wouldn't be the address you'd put into your public
DNS records. Do you mean that in Outlook when you look at the server address that you connect to collect email that it is displaying server1.mywebsite.local? If so then that's completely separate to where mail is delivered.
With the CNAME and MX records I'd suspect that they'd remain the same if they currently point to the mail.mydomain.com address, if they point elsewhere then you might well need to update them.
What confuses me is what is it that's been changed with your hosting? You say you've changed, and presumably bluehost are the new hosting company, but not what has changed to them. Do you mean the domain has transferred to them, or just the website, or your
internet access or something else?. You say that via the bluehost dns editor mail already points to mail.mydomainname.com, so it sounds to me as if the relevant records have already been setup and are working. Is email failing to be sent / received currently?
