Help with firewall port opening

I'm a newbie at this, so please be patient. And my Time Capsule is less than a week old, so I'm still in the learning stages.
I purchased an iPod Touch and one of the programs from the App Store--Pocketpedia--requires certain ports to be open in order to sync with my Mac pedia programs.
I went into the Time Capsule>Advanced settings to try to open the appropriate 2 ports (one for the Powerbook and one for the Touch). I'm obviously doing something wrong. That wouldn't be heard since all of the terminology is foreign to me. I know that I need to open the two TCP ports.
I clicked on the + to add a new service/port. I wasn't sure if I needed the numbers in Public TCP ports or private, so entered them in both with the numbers separated by commas.
I thought that this would be "personal file sharing" so I tried to choose that under "Service". However, when I did that it said "A pulic TCP port number conflicts with a file sharing port on the base station. Disable file sharing or choose a different port number." Actually, once I choose "personal file sharing", it autofills in port 548 into the two TCP numbers. That's one that's opened within System Preferences. So it actually won't let me change that number at all. When I try to, it services menu defaults back to "choose a service".
Needless to say, I'm very confused. I did go ahead and create a service with the two port #'s and without designating it a specific "service", but that doesn't seem to fix my problem with allowing the Touch to sync with my Powerbook.
Any help would be much appreciated.

With port mapping (forwarding) you "open" ports on the router's firewall in order to allow Internet traffic to reach a host device on your local area network (LAN). In this case your iPod Touch and PowerBook. However, you can only map the same port(s) to only one device. For example, you cannot map port 548 to both the Touch AND the PowerBook, only one or the other.
The typical port mapping setup requires two basic steps:
1. Assign either a static IP address or reserve a DHCP-assigned IP address to the host device.
2. Map the appropriate port(s) on the router to this host device.
The following is a more detailed list of steps ...
To setup port mapping on the Time Capsule (TC), either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.
Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address
o Click Continue.
o MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
o IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
o Click Done.
2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
Advanced > Port Mapping tab
o Click the "+" (Add) button
o Service: <choose the appropriate service from the Service pop-up menu>
o Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port values>
o Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port values>
o Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the host server>
o Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same as Public UDP Ports or your choice>
o Private TCP Port(s): <enter the same as Public TCP Ports or your choice>
o Click "Continue"

  • Help With VNC Ports

Hello everyone. I have a PowerPC G4 Mac Mini with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. I have turned off the Apple Firewall and I do not have a router. I connect to the internet using a DSL Modem. OK, I am trying to set up a VNC Server Using OSXvnc. Well, I know i need port 5900 to be open, and there is nothing blocking this port from opening. I checked on www.grc.com to see if port 5900 was open, but it said the port was "Stealthed". Does anyone know how I can open port 5900? Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Could you try opening a Terminal window and typing the following command:
    sudo ipfw list
(you'll be prompted for your password; you have to be an Administrator of your computer)
If your firewall is completely turned off, it should print a line like:
65535 4660828 3870352285 allow ip from any to any
If it's not completely off, you'll get a whole bunch of lines as output, some saying "deny ip" instead of "allow ip". That would be my best guess as to what's happening.
Also, I assume you haven't installed any third-party (non-Apple) firewall programs? A few do exist...
If the firewall is off, have you tried connecting via VNC, just to see if it actually does work?

  • Please help with Firewall and/or other Settings to Chat (MSN Messenger).

I've tried to chat on all (I think) the messenger programs available for Mac that use a hotmail account or .net passport - Adium, Fire, Mercury (current) and MSN itself - and I have the same problem with all of them: I keep getting cut off/disconnected from MSN! No problems with Yahoo messenger or Yahoo ID (although it can be a bit slow sometimes), just with .net passport account.
I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with Firewall and/or related settings, but after months of trying to fix it, I'm about to give up... please help!
Currently the following Firewall ports are all open:
    6891 – 6900
    1863
    80
    1080
    5060, 9000, 9010 (UDP – typed like that)
    including:
    Personal File Sharing
    Windows Sharing
    Remote Login - SSH
    and Printer Sharing.
In my most recent disconnected conversation, Mercury logged a "socket fired exception" error.
I'm on a broadband/adsl connection, shared with hubby's pc through ethernet (and he never gets disconnected from msn, btw).
ANY suggestions would be welcome, but apart from the above, please tell me how/where to find what you tell me to look at or for, because I'm a new Mac user (six months), and on top of that I'm blonde
    Many Thanks!
Mac Mini (PowerMac10,1)   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 with 1 GB DDR SDRAM

    Update:
Someone very kindly pointed out that my Firewall is actually Off (probably because I omitted to click on the Start button)... I did say I'm blonde
So now I'm really stumped... anybody got any ideas? Please?

  • Problem with COM port opening

I made an application using COM port to dialog with a microcontroleur and i have some troubles with the opening of the port. i developed it under window XP pro and labview 6.1 and i have no problem when i launch my application on an XP PC having labview installed or on a window 98 PC without labview (just the runtime engine). But when i launch it on an XP pc with only the runtime engine, it seems to launch correctly but in fact, there is a problem with the COM port opening. The menu allowing to chose the port number is inactive and has no effect, like if the software wouldn't recognize the material port on the PC. And consequently, nothing happens when the dialog should start.
Thank tou for your precious help

Is the VISA run-time engine installed? I don't understand why it would work on the win98 machine unless you have an older installation of it there.

  • AD Authentication Too Slow With Required Ports Open

    Hi,
I have a server (2008 R2) in DMZ network and the domain controller (also 2008 R2) is sitting in the internal network. There is no domain or domain controller in DMZ network, only one domain in internal network. The server in DMZ is a domain member. I opened
all the necessary ports through firewall mentioned in below article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772723%28v=ws.10%29.aspx
When I use domain credentials to log on to the server in DMZ, it successfully logs in but takes about 5 mins for the log in process to complete! As a test, I opened ANY (all ports) and then log in takes only a few seconds (normal time).
Can someone tell me whats the reason? Is the above mentioned article missing ports that should also be opened?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Yes the old ephemeral port range is required. See below thread which should help you further.

  • Firewall port open but not accessible

    Hi Folks,
I am trying to open port 587 in OSX server 10.3.9. I've gone to 'Firewall --> Settings --> Advanced', clicked on the 'add' key and set up a new port as follows:
    Action: allow
    Protocol: tcp
    Service: other
    Source Address: any; Port: 587
    Desintation Address: any; Port 587
    Interface: other
Doing this will NOT result in port 587 opening. I know it's not open because if I turn the firewall service 'OFF', I can access that port. However, with the service 'ON', I can't get through.
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Regards,
    Luke

    Your rule is too specific.
You're telling the firewall to allow traffic that is coming from port 587 on the remote machine to port 587 on your machine.
AFP connections only use a destination port of 587. The source port could be any available port number on the remote system, and would probably never be less than 1024.
Change the rule so that 'Source address' is 'any' and you should be fine.

  • Help with Essbase Ports

Does anyone knows if you can set a specific port for each APP.
Before we had Essbase 5.0.2 and we have upgraded to Essbase 9.3.1.
Several users connect to different DB from the internet. We had configured 3 ports for access in the firewall, 33005, 33010 and 33015.
Each port was used to access a different DB,
    DB A -> 33005
    DB B -> 33010
    DB C -> 33015
The problem that we have now is that every DB we start uses 2 ports, so when we start the 3 DB, the first one uses 33005 and 33010, the second uses 33015 and 33020 so the third can not be accessed through the internet.
I have try with PORTINC, but the main problem is that the open ports ends with 5, so I can not make the 3 DB visible.
So what I would like to know if you can assign an specific port to a specific DB.
I want to avoid any modification to the firewall, because that would mean I have to make a request to another area and that takes time.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't believe the ports can be isolated to specific databases (unless the databases are isolated to individual servers, that is -- and you don't want that).
In version 5, the ports did use increments of 5. This is no longer the case though, since version 7, the default is now 1 (which makes a lot more sense now). You should open up a wide range for "other" reasons (mostly to avoid the issue with "unable to send/unable to receive" due to all available ports being in use). You should look at the technical reference for the PORTINC, SERVERPORTBEGIN, and SERVERPORTEND entries and match the firewall to the settings applied to the server.
Basically, the need to keep the number of ports to a minimum should be evaluated against the need to provide sufficient access. If this is a firewall issue that IT is restricting access to, you should consider VPN access security as an alternative to public exposure to the essbase server.

  • DW CS4 Help with jump menu opening a new window.

First, I can't believe that Adobe left out an easy to use behavior to do this.
I have some jump menus, and I would like the selection to open up a new window and have the content appear there.  I saw a couple of old topics here that offered some suggestions, but they didn't work for me.  I could get it to open a new window, but the content was not there.  I saw where you need to add a "GO" button, and add a "Open New Window"behavior to it.  That is what opened the new window with new content.  I do not have the "GO" buttons on the jump menus in this code, but did try it and it didn't work.   If anyone can help and tell me how to do it, and where to place the code, I would greatly appreciate it.
I know this is long, but here is my code for the page.

I'm confused by your post and code.  Adobe has a function to do this.  In the Insert Toolbar under the Tab "Forms" there is an option to create a jump menu.  The only options that menu gives you is the same window or a frame on the page (a very outdated action looking at it now).  But with basic knowledge of links you insert the menu and you will get code like:
      <select name="jumpMenu" id="jumpMenu" onChange="MM_jumpMenu('parent',this,0)">
The "parent" denotes that this will open in the same window.  If you change that to "blank" then it will open in a new window.  A "Go" button is optional and also available in the DW GUI when you set up a jump menu.

  • Help with Firewall and Internet Sharing

I’m trying to use my Mac Mini with an Airport Extreme card, which is connected to the internet using Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem, for Internet Sharing with a Windows (work) laptop.
So, in the Sharing preferences panel:
Share connection from: Built in Ethernet
    To computers using: Airport
    I get the warning message:
Other settings may interfere with Internet Sharing.
The ‘More Info’ button gives the popup message:
Your firewall settings will prevent computers sharing your internet connection from browsing the web. Enable Personal Web Sharing in the Services pane to allow computers sharing your connection to browse the web.
I do that, turn the Airport card on, and the laptop can see the network, but can’t connect.
If I turn the Firewall off, then I can connect fine, but then I don’t have a Firewall. Isn’t that risky if I’m using DSL? How can I do the internet sharing and still protect my computer?
I realize I could buy a router with a built-in firewall, but isn’t there a way to set up the system using what I have?

    BDAqua wrote:
We just need to figure out what port is needed. I'd goto Sharing>Firewall>New>Port Name... Other, and try Port 53 both UDP and TCP.
Oh, and when you say the PC can't connect, could that just mean it can't browse?
On the PC, put the IP of the Mac in DNS servers, or...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.22
Well, I'm unable to set the DNS server addresses, as this is a work computer and I don't have the administrative privileges.
How bad is it to just turn the Firewall on the Mac off when I want to use the connection?

  • Help with programs not opening!

    I have a Lenovo Ideapad Miix 10.
Worked fine until recently.  Now when I try to open something like Word or Excel, they don't open.  Instead, it takes me to the desktop and does nothing.  When I go to "troubleshoot compatibility", I have the option to test the program, allow access to change the computer (or whatever its asking for..) but it still does nothing.  When I click no and select that the problem is not fixed, the troubleshooter lists incompatible program as being detected.
This is really inconvenient, and I am still getting comfortable with the windows tablet so dont exactly know my way around yet.  anyone able to help out? thanks in advance!

You are posting in the "icloud on my mac" forum, but your profile mentions Windows.  If using a mac, you need to have iphoto or aperture installed in order to receive new photos via photo stream.  If using windows, try posting in the iCloud on a PC forum.  You'll get better help there.

  • Help with expanding port on WRT54Gs PLEASE!?!?!

Hey guys.  I won't go into all of the details as to why exactly I am doing this specific setup, but it is a mix of WIFI range, using left over equipment for cost concerns, and a SONOS system being involved...
    My GOAL setup:
Modem ------ Internet port - WRT54Gs (wireless router) - LAN port ------- run through two jacks and through the attic ------ ***Switch or secondary router*** ---- Two etherent cables to 2 devices (PC  ***AND*** SONOS system)
This setup currently works just fine for getting my PC internet:
Modem ------ Internet port - WRT54Gs (wireless router) - LAN port ------- run through two jacks and through the attic ------ PC
In the "Switch or secondary router" part of the diagram above I have tried a 2nd WRT54Gs with correct non-overlapping IP settings, DHCP server turned off on the dowstream router without success.  I have also tried just now a brand new "plug and play" Linksys SE1500 switch (without a 2nd router) in the same spot in the line.  None of these work and my computer reports I am not on a network with each of these.  I have power cycled and rebooted everything a thousand times in every conceivable order.
Any thoughts are appreciated to help me solve this month long puzzle.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This is going to drive me nuts...
    So this is currently working:
Main router (LAN port) ---- switch (in same room) ----- split to SONOS (short cable) and PC (LOOONG cable to other room)
I was using this same quite long cable as a temp cable in my PC room from the wall to PC (which then goes through my attic/wall run)
This seems to point to my run through the attic but how can that be it if that run works fine with all these same cables going straight into my PC??

  • Someone please help with Photoshop CS5 opening error

Everytime I try to open Photoshop CS5 on my Macbook Pro, it starts to load and then right after it says "Initializing panels..." it stops loading and an error message error pops up and says "Could not initialzie Photoshop because of a program error." I'm not sure at all what I did to cause this. I have Premire CS5 and After Effects CS5 also installed and those load and work perfectly fine. Photoshop just stopped working all of a sudden. Photoshop is running in 64 bit mode but i also tried to run it in 32 bit mode and that did not work either.
Thank you for anyone that helps.
    Here are all my specs:
    - Macbook Pro
    - Mac OS X 10.5.8
    - 8 GB RAM
    - ~6 GB left of space on my harddrive
    - Photoshop CS5 Version 12.0

    xstatic606 wrote:
…- ~6 GB left of space on my harddriveæ
That is pathetic little disk space available.
Keep in mind that the OS must share that itty bitty space with Photoshop's Scratch Disk.  As a point of reference, I keep a modest, dedicated 160-GB dedicated second internal drive for my Photoshop Scratch Disk alone.

You should be running Photoshop 12.0.2.

  • Need help with bus ports (pre or post?)

I have recorded my acoustic guitar on two tracks in order to save time with the drop region and cutting and I have already autonated both of the tracks so they sound like one guitar (same channel strips).
However, I am trying not to use the plug ins that are on the guitar tracks TWICE (they are verry powerful), so I would like to copy the channel strip of my guitar tracks to a bus track, yet still keep the autonation working for both tracks (by the way, its just volume after the plug ins).
I cant say I could esily put all the regions from both tracks into one, so I want to use a bus.
If this is at all possibe for me to do while keeping my automation for both of the two tracks, how would I go about doing this? (do I set them as pre/post sends, ect.)
    Thank you so much!
    -Sam

Instructions for opening ports is here.

You should be fine opening the whole range, 10000-20000

  • Help with error message opening lightroom 5 on macbook?

I downloaded lightroom 5 on my macbook. i have os-lion. When I open the program and error message appears  saying " error switching modules". I am missing all the options to import photos. When I try to click on lightroom preferences at the top of the screen nothing pops up.  It seems like i am missing some of the options and the navigation pane. Do i need to update something else to be able to import photos and click between module pages?

    55AB,
It appears the error message you have is an ink system failure error message. While it looks like your printer needs to be services there is also a thread with some suggestions out there with some results for this same issue. I have linked this thread this post. You will want to look at message 16 and 17 for what seems to be a resolution for your same printer. Hope this helps.

If I helped you at all it would be great if you clicked the blue kudos star!
If I solved your post please mark it as solved to help others.

  • Help with errors on opening Dreamweaver

On opening DW (v. CS3), I get an error message that says:
    quote:
The following translators were not loaded due to errors:
XSLTransform.htm: has configuration information that is invalid"
It takes a couple of times of clicking "OK" to get that one
    to disappear, then I get:
    quote:
"While executing onLoad_in -onOpen.htm the following
Javascript error(s) occurred: In file ""_onOpen"": Reference Error"
    onOpen is not defined.
It also takes a few clicks of the OK button to get that one
    to disappear too.
I also get these messages when trying to open, save or close
    individual pages.
Not sure how much information is needed to troubleshoot this
    - but here goes:

The site has been working just fine for the past 2 or 3

immediately prior to it occurring ... I first noticed it when I
