Help with GUI Layouts and ContentPane

Hi all,
I need a little help.. I am writing a program to display a window with different widgets,
This is how it's layed out: (picture a window in your head):
Text Field OK Button
JList 3 vertically stacked JList 3 vertical stacked JList Cancel Button
checkboxes radio buttons
Help Button
Text Field Small Combo Box One checkbox
I am having problems with mixing and matching different layouts, can you do that???? or can I use a GridLayout or Border Layout to create this?????.. and Also how do you vertically stack check boxes and radio buttons????? I'm a tad confused and frustrated.... I do not want code written as I have to do that myself, just a suggestion as to what kind of Layout I should use...
Thanks very much
Mike

my previous was a bit messed up:
I guess my question is: can you mix and match different types of Layouts on the same content pane???
Or do you use say, BorderLayout (North, SOuth East West Center, and plop your buttons, combo boxes, JLists and text fields within each region ??????... I know how FlowLayout works, but can't use it in this situation.
Please email at [email protected] and I can send a better graphical representation of the window I am trying to create. Again I don't want code, just a suggestion as to how to layout the window.....

  • Need help with Page Layout and Background Scaling

    hello, everyone.
I am in the process of designing a new website for myself,
and while I was researching nicely designed pages to use as
inspiration, I stumbled upon this site:
    http://www.jeffsarmiento.com/
obviously, the design is very impressive, but it also
incorporates a lot of web mechanics that I have been trying to
figure out, so I will use this page as an example.
one thing I need help with is backgrounds. as you can see in
the posted website, the creator used a seamlessly tiled paper
texture to display the bulk of his content on. also make not of the
pattern that is located to the left of the paper texture. how do I
create seamless backgrounds like this that will scale to fit any
amount of content or any resolution? I can't imagine that the guy
that made that site created a new size background every time he
made an update, so there has to be an easier way.
the second thing that I am having trouble with is general
site layout. I have read that most sites used series of invisible
tables to organize there content, but when I open the source of
this page in dreamweaver, he was using something different. div
tags? should I be using these? who do I use them? are there any
general layout tips that someone could pass on to me? perhaps a
    link to a good tutorial?
please help me. i am very confused.
    thanks so much.

IMO not a good site to emulate. To wit:
    Top background image:
    http://www.jeffsarmiento.com/images/bg-top.jpg;
    745px
    x 350px 137K
    Main background image:
    http://www.jeffsarmiento.com/images/bg-tile.jpg;
    745px x 950px 130K
Total page size: 454K (Check here:
    www.websiteoptimization.com)
Website usability experts routinely recommend a maximum page
    size of ~80K
Check out the We We Scale @ www.FutureNowInc.com/wewe/ where
    they suggest,
"You speak about yourself approximately 0,003 times as often
    as you speak
about your customers. Might that have an impact on your
    effectiveness?"
That is 100% consistent with the #1 Web Design mistake:
    "Believing people
care about you and your web site." or to phrase more
    expansively, "Our site
tries to tell you how wonderful we are as a company, but not
    how we're going
    to solve your problems."
www.sitepoint.com has some excellent books on making a
    website actually
attractive and usable at the same time.

  • Writers - please help with page layout and headers/footers in Pages

    Hello
Apologies if this is a stupid question, but I have fiddled around with my page layout and can't figure this out for myself!
When I type a manuscript, I like to have a header and footer giving the book title, chapter, my name, etc. I'm finding that the header and footer is set to a wider range than I have set the main body of the page. Would you leave it that way, so that it is easily differentiated from the actual text, or would you align the left and right margins on the header and footer to match the body of the text? And if so, how do you do this please?
Secondly, I can't figure out how to increase the top and bottom gap so that there is a good space between the header and the first line of text.
Any advice would be gratefully received!
    Thank you!

I don't understand what you did.
When we use the normal tools:
Inspector > Document > Margins, the widths of header, body and footer are the same.
Secondly, I can't figure out how to increase the top and bottom gap so that there is a good space between the header and the first line of text.
With the already named tools, we may adjust top & bottom margins with no change on the header & footer.
As I often wrote, looking in the PDF User Guide which is delivered with every copy of iWork is an efficient way to spare time.

  • Help with Print Layout Designer

    Hi all,
I'm not sure if I should post this here or not, I already posted it in the Business One Forum.  Moderator(s)  if this is not the proper place please delete it and let me know that it is not the appropriate venue.
I need some help with Print Layout Designer.  I am running 2005A SP01, and my customer wants a modification to the Sales Backorder Report.  They want to add the column "In Stock" to both the report as displayed on the screen and the printed document.  The report rendered to the screen has the In Stock, but it is not checked as visible.  I check it and In Stock shows up as designed.  The part I am having problems with is the printed document. I opened the PLD from the Backorder Report, and saved it under a different name.  I resized some of the columns in the repetitive area (header and data) to make room for the In Stock column.  I CAN add the text field Instock as free text and enter "In Stock" as the content.  I looked at the "backorder" column in the PLD, and it is a text field with the source System Variable and the variable is 109.  I would assume that all I need to do in my added column is to set the source to System Variable and enter the variable number.  That is the problem; I can't find the variable number for that column.  I looked on the report rendered to the screen with system information on and the variable is "3 #000027825,OnHand".  I looked at the Back Order column of the report rendered to the screen and the variable is "3 #000028725,OpenCreQty".  I found a spreadsheet that is supposed to contain a list of system variables for 2007A, but the document type for this report is BRDR and that document type does not appear in the list of document types in that spreadsheet.  I looked for a similar spreadsheet for 2005A SP01 but didn't find one.  I DID find a document "How To Customize Printing Templates with the Print Layout Designer".  According to that document, I should be able to get the system variable from the report rendered to the screen with System Information turned on.  Can anyone help?
    TIA,
    Steve

I haven't dealt with this before so I can't be certain, but here are my thoughts.
The Backordered Qty is probably a calculated field, so that's why it's a system variable. The In Stock is a defined field, so you probably can use the file and field number, OITM, OnHand. I would look at maybe the stock number or description to see how those are setup on the form instead of the backordered qty field.

  • Can you help me with Page Layout and/or Design ideas for a software manual?

    Greetings,
I am a new InDesign user, and am converting a software manual that I created in MS Word into InDesign. It will be converted to a pdf to view online. I have the basics (3 master pages, page numbers, running headers, 2column pages with text boxes on the left and screenshots on the right), but I want to make it look prettier. Could you please give me some ideas on page layout and/or design to make it look better or more creative?
A few things that I am considering: borders around screenshots, a watermark, a logo next to the page numbers, different size/type of fonts, etc.
I am open to any suggestions to make this look better. However, please understand that I am new to InDesign. With that being said, please tell me a few steps when you mention your tips. Thank you!

Take a look at a few websites on Cannons of Page Construction.
I think the best idea for you is to look at a few software manuals and take tips from how they accomplished the layouts.
I'm not saying to copy them - but rather see what works and doesn't work, what worked for them might not necessarily work for you - research some layouts.
Fonts/type/sizes etc. are pretty much ambigious without context - is this a software manual for kids (soft cuddly big fonts easy to read), technical (small, tight spacing etc), Adult friendly (smooth, crisp clear, well spaced), elderly (large elegant fonts).
It all really depends on your demographic audience.
Being new to InDesign I suggest you take up Sandy Cohens Quickstart Visual Guide.
I think you should look at Michael Murphys Book on Styles
And you should definitely get your printer (the guys bulk printing) the booklet for you on board from the start to work out optimal sizes to suit their printing presses and workflow etc. And to ensure that you are setup correctly in page sizes, margins, safe type areas, colour profiles and a few other things that your printers prepress can help you with.

I have a report designed like the below, I have used "narrative view" for customer detail and "table view" for order detail. In the narrative view I can say row = 1 and it picks up the first record of the customer detail, but order detail shows all rows. How can I control it so the order detail shows only the detail record of the customer associated. Also how do I go to the second record and so forth. Please help. Customer Number:

    Order Detail:
Line number | Order No | Order description | Order StatusWhy don't you do this?
    1) Build a dashboard prompt for Customer Number. and save to a PV.
    2) Build a report with all the columns for customer and order (in Criteria View) with a filter for the PV to capture the dashboard prompt.
    3) Build a pivot table with Customer Number and Customer Name in the Rows section. Put the Customer Address in the Measures section and change the Aggregation Rule to Max.
This will serve as the summary table showing only the information of the customer selected.
    2) Build Pivot Table:2 with the Order details.
    3) In the Compound Layout, put Pivot table one on the top and Pivot Table:2 below it.
When a customer is selected, you will have the customer data with the order details under it for that customer only.

  • Heed Help With Form Layout

    Hi all
I am developing a j2me program that need display photos on a form like a photo gallery. I use image item to hold the resized photos on a form.
What I want is to display 3 photos in a row, like this
    x x x
the programm is working fine on the emulator and nokia phone, but when I try on a Windows Mobile phone (HTC the JVM is Jbed) , It only display one photo in a row, like this
    X
    X
    X
No matter what layout option and the size of photos, it only display one photo in a row
I really need help with this
    Thanks

The only way to get more consistent behavior across devices is to use the low level API -- Canvas, not Form. You cannot interfere with device-dependent implementations of the layout of a Form.

  • Beginner needs help with css layout

i'm new to using dw (cs3) and css, though i have some
background in html and coding. i'm creating a page using the "one
column elastic, centered, header and footer" layout and i have a
banner header with a horizontal spry menu bar at the bottom of the
header. the background color of the buttons on the menu bar is red,
and there's a yellow 5px border on the top and bottom of the red
menu bar, so it looks like there's red bar with yellow piping above
and below it, and this bar is between the header and body section
of the page. i've set these colors in the "ul.MenuBarHorizontal a"
    rule.
now, the issue i have is that my menu bar does not extend
across the entire column, so there's empty space to the right of my
menu bar (between the end of the menu bar and the far right
column). i'd like the look of the red and yellow menu bar to extend
all the way across, but i can't figure out how to do this in css.
    do i:
extend the menu bar all the way across the width of the page?
i can't figure out how to do this.
insert an image to make it appear as though the red and
yellow bar keeps extending to the right? if so, how will that image
remain elastic along with my page?
or is there a better solution?
i'm very new to css and i'm doing my best to figure out how
everything fits together. the last web site i built was in 1997 and
it was done in notepad. any help would be tremendous. i'm in
kinshasa, in the democratic republic of congo, and truth be told
there aren't a lot of dw gurus out here.
    thanks in advance...

  • Help with page layout please

This may be a stupid question, but I am new and still
learning. I hope that someone will help me out. I am learning
Dreamweaver and I notice that some more advanced looking pages have
better looking layouts. For example this link
    http://www.templatemonster.com/website-templates/20061.html
is of a page that has a heading box with Newspaper text and then
the page background color appears to be off white… But on top
of the heading box and the background, It appears to be a large
rectangular box with more boxes inside it and the biggest box
overlays the newspaper heading box slightly. What is this called
and how do I achieve this? I am thinking this is some type of
advanced form of tables. But I notice on other pages ex:
    http://www.templatemonster.com/website-templates/19973.html,
    http://www.templatemonster.com/website-templates/19976.html
some boxes are rounder and they are placed all over the page…
I didn’t think you could move/adjust tables in Dreamweaver. I
notice that some pages even have different background design on
some parts of the background and not all… how is that
possible if you can only select a solid color for your background
color in Dreamweaver? Are there tutorials somewhere that I could
    follow?

    >more advanced looking pages have better looking layouts.
Ok... so take a look at the CODE for those pages... As well
as the links below - another way to learn (including anyone else's
bad habits) is to find a page you like, and then tell your web
browser to show you the code view for the page and/or do a "Save
As" and save the page to your computer to then copy & paste
code segments into your file (in IE click View at the top, select
    Source from the options)

  • Help with sliced layout

Ok, I'm sure you guys get this kind of topic frequently
enough to make you want to rip your hair out, but here it goes.
I recently acquired a template to use for my online gaming
    team.
I have the template, but it needs some fixing-upping in
    Dreamweaver.
What the site looks like now,
    null

What I would like it to look like,

What it looks like in Dreamweaver,
    here.
It seems to me to be as simple as centering the layout and
defining a repeating background that expands with however big the
viewer's browser window is; I need help accomplishing this.
    I have attached the code.

That's what backgrounds do by default.

  • Help with website layout

Hi, I need help with Dreamweaver CS4. I don't know HTML which
is why I am using this program. I am using the AP Div (Not the
Insert Div Tag) Icon at the top in the Standard Layout tab accessed
by the icon at the top of the panel in the classic layout mode.
Here is my problem. I am trying to make sure the text and
spacing is the same as much as possible from browser to browser.
The spacing between the lines (leading) is different. Sometimes the
text jumps out of the box or text lines get cut off and looks
jumbled. My pages are layed out with a bunch of AP divs so I can
place them wherever I want. For example I draw one AP div (which
has the square box in at the left top) and then another one below.
Even though they are not touching, the browser displays them
overlapping with the text clashing. Or sometimes text just runs
wild. I've tried to use tables but they are too limiting and I am
not being able to place them freely. Is that because browsers do
not recognize CSS? How do I get at least a decent consistency

As well as the links below - another way to learn (including
anyone else's bad habits) is to find a page you like, and then tell
your web browser to show you the code view for the page and/or do a
"Save As" and save the page to your computer to then copy &
paste code segments into your file (in IE click View at the top,
    select Source from the options)

  • Help with tweaking blog and webform built in Adobe Muse

    Hi there.
A client of mine had a 3rd party do a re-design (in Adobe Muse) of their current site in BC. Managed to get most of the re-design all launched except for a couple of tweaks that have been giving me major headaches.
Firstly, is it possible to edit the site that was built in Muse directly from BC itself and not Muse? I don't have a Muse subscription.
If so, I need help with the following that I have tried to tweak myself, but just can't find out how. BTW I am not a developer but muddle my way around editing existing code etc etc.
    1. On the contact us page, I need to add an additional field to the webform. A radio button question: "preferred contact method". Phone or email. I know how to add the field to the webform in BC. Apparently Muse forms don't support radio buttons? Anyway, I can't figure out how to edit the source on the contact page  to include the fields that I add to the webform.
    2. Some minor tweaks to the layout of the blog page. I need to make the horizontal and vertical lines meet up and not have a space. Also, the left column width needs to be decreased and the right column width increased. Basically I need the current live blog http://www.robertsonburns.com.au/blah-blog to look like the previously coded muse blog (which is not live) http://robertsonburns-test5.businesscatalyst.com/blah.html which it does, except for these two minor issues.
Would appreciate anyone's help and/or advice.
    Thanks.

    Hey there,
Yes you just go to the site either via... site.buisnesscatalyst.com/admin or livesite.com/admin
Once you do that you can login. It depends how it was built though. Properly a site will have content holders and templates and the pages just hold the content. A user can go to those pages, webapps, blogs (dependng on the plan and build of the site) can edit that content.
Muse is not the best in terms of handling that and making updates, I am aware the Team updated Muse to handle fetching updates etc though but there is a note of caution on that stil though.
    1. What is the plan of the site? If it is just a CC site then there is no web form manager with that plan of BC. You will have to edit and update the form built in Muse.
If it is on a plan that supports web forms it also depends on how you built it. If in Muse you should be able to just update the form in Muse I think and it posts into the system to update. If not then you need to go into the admin and web form manager and edit the html to make changes. This depends though if the form was inserted as a module, if not you need to navigate to the template or page and update it there once you have added the new fields to the form under the web form itself.
    2. Layouts are managed via SFTP under the folder Layouts or in the admin under Module Templates in the main menu and Blog layouts.
