Help with home network.

Not sure if this is the proper forum for this question, just point me in the right direction if I'm wrong.
I am a new student in networking, taking the CCNA courses, and now want to rewire my home.  I currently have a cable modem and E2500 setup running my network.  I want to get the modem and router out of my computer room and in the basement where the cable enters the house.  I want to do this to clean up the computer room wiring a bit and to run line drops to different rooms in the house where the internet will be utilized.
Currently there are two PC's, a laptop, a tablet, sometimes a phone, and an XBOX using the internet.  I want to get my printer back up and running on the network but thats another story. Only one PC is currently hardwired.  I would like to run two cables into the room with the PC and XBOX that are currently using wireless, at least two into the computer room for the PC and network printer, and one or two into the living room for the blue ray player and possibly an internet tv.
If these classes are paying off, I believe I can have the modem and router in the basement with a small switch connected to the router to add more ports for my needs.  I was going to use a patch panel to manage and label my cables.
My first concern is for the wireless signal.  I feel as though I shouldn't have a problem, but I just wanted someone elses opinion.  The only real use will be by the laptop, tablet, and phones mostly on the first floor above the basement.  The wireless signal shouldn't be affected by just one floor, right?
My next question would be about using the other 3 ports on the router before using ports on the switch.  Should I be using the ports on the router first or should that not matter?
Also if anyone could point me in the direction of a fairly cheap(less than $100) switch that would fit my needs I would be grateful.

Most home routers are omni directional. Technically it is best to have it in a central location. But in good circumstances 1 floor won't make a difference. That is subject to change based on interference though.
Doesn't matter if you use the rest of the ports on router or a switch first.
If you run into issues with wireless signal you could run a wire up to a second wireless router and setup a roaming wireless network. Basically turn off dhcp on second router, give it the same SSID and passkey, and a different channel. Clients should roam between whichever signal is stronger after it goes below a certain signal strength.
If you don't need any link aggregation or vlans and just want a plug in and go unmanaged switch, it is pretty cheap. At that point a switch is a switch is a switch. There's no noticable difference other than port speed.

I'm not sure I've got a grasp on the issue you are having but let me give it a try
Website A is finished and you have uploaded it to the Internet, so it is LIVE.
You make a copy of Website A, and call it Website B, then make all required changes.
IF you uploaded Website B, then it is likely you will overwrite Website A. You must instead, upload Website B as a separate Website.
To publish to a new site:
    Click Publish.
Then click the expansion triangle left of Options.
Change Publish To setting to New Site
fill out rest of required details, and click OK to publish.
You'll now have two separate web-sites.
If you need to link between them, use absolute hyperlinks (the full URL).
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem with "Home Network" in hub manager

    Hi everyone,
I had a bit of an issue with my homehub this week where some prolonged decorating caused the hub to be unplugged for most of the day. When the hub was plugged in again it appeared to have performed a factory reset. Now over the past day or two it has had the odd issue that I've needed to sort. My main issue is that currently the "Home Network" option with the Home Hub manager will cause the router to reset and drop connection, however it is only this page. Also the router isn't responding to requests to bthomehub.home and I have to use the IP. I've done a factory reset through the hub manager and set up all my previous settings as were previously, but the lack of access to the "Home Network" page is still a problem and is getting to be frustrating because I have a chromecast unable to connect without being able to turn off smart setup.
Details of my home hub below, any input would be lovely.
BT Home Hub 5 (Type A) | Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.173.1.6

have you tried a factory reset but using the recessed button on back and holding for 20/30 secs until the lights flash?

  • IPod touch not working with home network?

I know this question has been brought up dozens of times before, but I couldn't find a working solution in any other posts so allow me to explain my situation.
I got my touch a few months ago, it was working fine with my unsecured home network. Now, the ipod claims that is connected to my network, however it will not load webpages or anything else that might make it seem like it has an internet connection. When I go to Safari, the page attempts to load for what seems like forever and then comes up with the same message everytime claiming that the server has stopped responding or that the server cannot be found. It does, however, work perfectly with the free Wi-Fi hotspots that I connect with in businesses with no problems at all.
    I have tried:
    Resetting Network Settings
    Resetting iPod (factory restore)
    Resetting my router
Renewing the Lease on my iPod network connection
Turning the iPod's Wi-Fi on and off
Turning the iPod off and back on
Changing the DNS number to (4.2.2.2,4.2.2.3.)
I'm not sure if this is significant, but when I am "connected" to my network according to my iPod, it says I have full signal. When I am disconnected and my default network is just on the list of networks, it says that there are only two bars of signal strength.
Please help, I don't know what is wrong with this thing.

Have you updated your router firmware lately? If not, please do so.
DNS is usually provided by your ISP. I would use that unless your other devices can't reach the network either. A good alternative is OpenDNS which you can find out about at opendns.com.
When you think you are connected, tap Settings > WiFi > then the little blue > next to your network name. What type of IP address are you seeing? If you see that your IP address starts with 164, then you really are not connecting to your network.
You might want to look at a couple of router settings. What is DHCP set to? (this issues your IP address) and What is MAC address filtering set to? (if this is on and your iPod MAC address has not been entered into the router table, you will not connect). DHCP should be on, MAC address filtering off. Additionally, look at what your default DNS is set to. Most routers have a box to check saying "Use ISP" for DNS.

  • Help! Home network connection Issues!

Help! I have been trying for weeks to connect to my home computer network (which is shared by other computers in the home and there is a central storing/back up point). I use an ethernet cable, sometimes the network shows up and I can access the shared documents/files but other times it does not. There is nothing blocking the connection as other laptops can connect to it straight away. The ethernet cable and port has also been checked, I just cant figure out what i'm doing wrong as it should show up every time I connect - any ideas???

Who set up the network router?
Is it possible that the router is configured for a specific range of IP addresses (let's say 6), and you're not getting 'in' because there are too many devices connected and trying to connect at once?
If you're comfortable tinkering a bit, I'd try creating a new network 'Location' with the specific information for your home network, rather than using the 'Automatic' location default settings.
In System Preferences, Internet and Network, Network, click the Location button, then 'Edit Location'. Now click the 'Gear' and select 'Duplicate Location' to copy the 'Automatic' settings to 'Automatic Copy'.
(Now you can modify the 'Automatic Copy' settings a little at a time, and still get back to 'Automatic' defaults. Then when it's successful, you can later rename it 'Home' or something meaningful, and still have 'Automatic' which is especially useful when you travel elsewhere.)
Before you change anything, in System Preferences, Internet and Network, Network, look on the first Network screen at the Status to see (when) you are connected. When it is working, it should show a message like the following 'Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address: nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn' (automaticaly assigned from the DHCP server). If you get IP address conflict notices pop up on this or any of the other attached computers, you should change the Configuration to DHCP with Manual Address.

  • Help with wireless network set up on 8820

Can someone please give me some help before I pull the rest of my hair out!
I am trying to connect my 8820 and also an 8110 to our home wireless network, each time I go through the set up procedure and find the network, put in the correct WEP key and then try and connect it gives me the following error messages on both phone "Device failed to associate with the AP." can some one please tell me where I am going wrong?
I have changed the home network from WPA to WEP as there is no option for WPA in the settings.
    Help Please.
    Many thanks in advance

I am unable to connect a 8820 on my network with same message noted by User: leomyles.  I am able connect my Bold 9000 without any difficulty.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I would not have thought there should be such a problem within 2 Blackberry models.
I too need help on resolving this issue. I would have chosen another model for my staff had I known such a problem existed.

  • Need some help w/ home network!

Hi, Ive been at this for three days now and ive finaly given in!
    *sighs*
    I need some help....
Ive got a Linksys WRT54G v5 with two computers connecting to the internet through it. (both connect w/out incident, and the wireless is secured)
One computer is connected to the router with an Ethernet wire -
The other computer is connected to the router through its wireless adapter -
What my goal was, was to network the two computers together and share things between them. I was ultimatley going for was the ability to connect from either machine, and control the other one (if Im correct, I would use Remote Desktop Connection?)
Now ive read and tried some many things ranging from VPN, portforwards, so on and so....
Can this type of network be created? Im I being to ambisious with my goals as far as some type of remoted control? Please help, im so lost...

Remote control of a networked computer in your home? Why? Share the folders that hold information/data and leave it to that.
I use a version of Symantec's PCAnywhere to remotely control a computer in my office from my home. That's because I live 7 miles away from my office. I get lazy, so remote control is my answer.

  • Lost touch with home network

I'm NOT good at networking. It drives me crazy, so please be gentle:
I have an iMac connected by ethernet to a Belkin G Plus MIMO Router, which is connected to a cable modem. The router also has ethernet connections to two Replay DVRs, an internet telephone, and wirelessly to a laptop running Win Vista
This morning I was online with my iMac and lost internet. After fiddling about for the better part of an hour, I plugged the ethernet from the modem directly into the iMac and the internet was just fine, so the problem is with the home network. The name of my home network still appears in the Airport "menulet" and it's checked. In Systems Preferences, in the Airport settings, it also still has the name of my home network, but it says that "Airport has the self-assigned IP address... and will not be able to connect to the internet". Is this the problem?
In surfing this problem, I did find reference to security settings, and have checked those. My firewall is OFF.
The laptop, of course, does not connect to the internet now that the home network isn't showing there. Likewise my iPhone doesn't show the wi-fi signal indicator.
I'll be glad to provide further info. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Uh, it just occurred to me that maybe its the router which has lost internet connectivity. But if thats' true, would it also cease to appear to the laptop even as a "local network"?

Sorry, I should add that 1) the internet phone still works when connected to the router; 2) when I open the router interface, it shows "connected". It THINKS its connected to the internet.

  • Can someone help with a networking problem?

Here's a situation I need some help with:
I live in a semi-detached house. My neighbour has broadband, I don't. The phone company (BT) has said it would cost too much to install another line to enable me to have broadband, and would involve digging up the road and the garden, which they're not prepared to do.
However, someone at work has suggested that I approach my neighbour and ask if I could 'share' their broadband connection and in return pay a contribution to their monthly costs.
For this, I believe, I would need to buy a router, plus something to make my Mac 'wireless'.
Now, I consider myself Mac-savvy, but when it coms to wireless stuff I confess I know very little! So if someone could explain in simple terms what I would need to buy and approx costs I be very grateful!
I have a G5, and I believe my neighbour is a PC user.
Also, can someone explain how the whole 'share' thing works? Does my neighbour have to have their computer on all the time? Do I need to sign up with an ISP? Will having two computers accessing one line slow it down significantly?
    Many thanks,
    Andy

Hi Andy, before going too far down the 'sharing' route I would rattle some cages chez BT. If your neighbour has broadband then you and they are within a hair's breadth (line length speaking) of the same distance to the exchange. If they have enabled BB next door, why can't they enable BB for you without the hassle? I live on a mobile home site in the back of beyond in Devon and when I upgraded from dial-up to BB, and then to 1 meg there was no problem. There was a two week hiatus while BT did their stuff 'on the line' but it all went without a hitch. Er...I take it you do have an exclusive landline?
However, if the situation re the line is as per, then the simplest way (to obviate any wifi interference issues) would be for you or neighbour to route an ethernet cable through walls/window frames from your Mac to a router on their side of the wall. (Approx £30?) This would be connected to their phone line. Their PC would also plug into the router. (Which they may already have if they're on BB, though they may have a nasty USB BB modem &nbsp:&nbsp: No good for what you want.
If you/they don't want the 'hardwire' option then first you have to wifi enable your Mac if it is not already. Not sure of the costs but check on the Apple website for 'Airport Extreme Card'. Don't go the wifi USB dongle route, apparently they are not VG, though I've no personal experience. You would then have to get a wifi router modem (from £40 I think, it's a long time since I've looked, my Belkin has been virtually faultless) which would sit on their side of the wall plugged into the BT socket. Their PC would either plug into that or connect wirelessly with it, as is their wont. That's basically it, but there could still be interference issues, eg, two households with microwaves, cordless phones; intervening walls, bookcases, filing cabinets etc., etc.,
If done via either of the above, then no, your neighbour doesn't have to have their PC on all the time, if ever.
You don't have to sign up with an ISP, it would have to be a 'gentleman's agreement' that you bung him £x pm for your share. He is already paying his ISP.
In practice, sharing would only slow down large downloads. If you were each downloading a large file at the same time then you would be sharing the bandwidth, so your respective files would download at half the speed than they would otherwise. If you are each surfing and if you both 'clicked' at the same time then, yes, he might think, "Wish I hadn't said yes to Andy, this page is taking ages". I don't really think anyone would notice though unless he was surfing at the same time as you were downloading something big, or vice versa.
I hope the above is some help but I would have a word with the neighbour first and sound them out, after rattling BT that is...
Come back here if you want more help.
    Good luck!
    Adrian

  • Email not working with home network

If this is answered elsewhere, my apologies.
I have a first generation iPhone, which is set up on the wireless network at work and also at my previous apartment. I had no problems receiving e-mails whether over Edge or wirelessly. When I moved into a new building and set up the router, both the phone and Apple Mail on my MacBook refuse to receive e-mail from either work or personal Gmail accounts, though I can browse the Internet at my heart's content on either phone or MacBook and check email through the browser. If I take the phone off the wireless network, it pulls e-mail off the Edge data network just fine, and it continues to work seamlessly at work. I tend to just keep it on Edge now, which isn't ideal, but I get the e-mails that way. I've had a similar problem with random hotel wireless connections as well.
Anyone experience a similar problem or have a solution? I'm using a Motorola Surfboard router at home and a WPA passcode. Thanks!

I have been able to surf on Safari over the wireless network on both the phone and computer, and the phone does pull email on the work wireless network and previous home network. Gmail works just fine on the MacBook too, but Mail doesn't want to pull in messages at all.
I actually played around more with my router (Motorola SBG900) and when I turned the firewall completely off, the e-mail finally pulled properly. Is it worth just leaving the firewall off, or can I adjust the settings so that it will allow the phone to access the network to retrieve mail? In the advanced settings of the router there are a ton of "Port ID's" and depending on Motorola's vague "High" "Medium" "Low" Firewall settings, it allows inbound access to different Port ID's. Thanks!

I don't understand how people get themselves into
these situations as school, if you don't want to learn
it don't sign up for the class.....You never got yourself into this situation.... I think everyone has on occassion.
My very first "serious" university program was to solve a second order, non-linear differential equation using the Runge-Kutta method. This is NOT the easy way to learn a computer language and I have to admit I did take "shortcuts" using more experienced people than me.
That was before the web though...
God am I really that old?

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
