Help with iMac and external HD..

Hello there, I am not sure if this is in the right forum, and please do tell me if its not. The question I have is that I have an awful lot of music and video files (in-fact 100GBS) that I want to import into my itunes library. I have 3 External firewire Drives which I believe I could make into a Raid Drive, how ever what if my library gets bigger....can I expand on the Raid drive, to make it bigger as my library gets bigger?
Thanks so much for any help...!

Get one 1TB external drive. For use as storage for iTunes, ultra fast data access is not needed, so a less expensive USB 2.0 external drive will work fine, although you can certainly get a FireWire drive if desired. I often see 1TB USB 2.0 external drives on sale. You can check dealmac.com. Note: If you get one that is marketed to the Windows crowd, be sure to reformat it for Mac OS X.
Using separate external drives as a RAID is possible, but I would not do it. I would not trust a RAID that is connected between drives using FireWire cables. Having three separate enclosures with three separate power connections and power supplies is potentially risky as well.
Make sure you are backing up all that data to a separate external drive, using Time Machine.

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

  • External speakers not working with iMac and Lion

I have a dual core imac with Lion and external speakers I just bought from Apple. I cannot get them to work with itunes or anything else on the imac. Can anyone tell me what to do? They work well with an ipod touch, but not the iMac.

Hmmm. I plugged the speakers into the headphone jack. they are  the Audyssey Lower East Side Media Speakers. When I hoty option on the menu bar, headphones are checked as output. When I go to system preferences and check output, all it says is "headphone port." Still no change.

Thanks - I guess it is like there were two of me!
I bought the iPhone first and it seemed natural to link it to the (work) e-mail address which was in constant use. The iMac for home use came next and it seemed natural to use my home e-mail address, particularly as I knew by then that I would lose the work address after my imminent retirement. The same logic went for the recent puchase of the MacAir. I am not sure what happened with the iPad (also a recent purchase) - iTunes seemed to puch me towards the same ID as the iPhone.
It is not a huge problem - just makes my persona look schizoid! Otherwise very happy with everything Apple.

  • Help with writing and retrieving data from a table field with type "LCHR"

    Hi Experts,
I need help with writing and reading data from a database table field which has a type of "LCHR". I have given an example of the original code but don't know what to change it to in order to fix it and still read in the original data that's stored in the LCHR field.
Basically we have two Function modules, one that saves list data to a database table and one that reads in this data. Both Function modules have an identicle table which has an array of fields from type INT4, CHAR, and type P. The INT4 field is the first one.
Incidentally this worked in the 4.7 non-unicode system but is now dumping in the new ECC6 Unicode system.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Anuj,
    The unicode flag is active.
When I run our report and then to try and save the list data a dump is happening at the following point
    LOOP AT T_TAB into L_WA.
As I say, T_TAB consists of different fields and field types whereas L_WA is CHAR 800. The dump mentions UC_OBJECTS_NOT_CONVERTIBLE
When I try to load a saved list the dump is happening at the following point
    APPEND T_DATA-RAWDATA to T_TAB.
T_DATA-RAWDATA is type LCHR and T_TAB consists of different fields and field types.
In both examples the dumps mention UC_OBJECTS_NOT_CONVERTIBLE

Hi I am using oracle 10g. Trying to aggregate duplicate count records. I have so far:
    SELECT 'ST' LEDGER,
    CASE
    WHEN c.Category = 'E' THEN 'Headcount Exempt'
    ELSE 'Headcount Non-Exempt'
    END
    ACCOUNTS,
CASE WHEN a.COMPANY = 'ZEE' THEN 'OH' ELSE 'NA' END MARKET,
    'MARCH_12' AS PERIOD,
    COUNT (a.empl_id) head_count
    FROM essbase.employee_pubinfo a
    LEFT OUTER JOIN MMS_DIST_COPY b
    ON a.cost_ctr = TRIM (b.bu)
    INNER JOIN MMS_GL_PAY_GROUPS c
    ON a.pay_group = c.group_code
    WHERE a.employee_status IN ('A', 'L', 'P', 'S')

    a.fiscal_month,
    a.fiscal_year;
which gives me same rows with different head_counts. I am trying to combine the same rows as a total (one record). Do I use a subquery?

    Hi,
Whenever you have a problem, please post a little sample data (CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, relevant columns only) from all tables involved.
Also post the results you want from that data, and an explanation of how you get those results from that data, with specific examples.
    user610131 wrote:

I am trying to combine the same rows as a total (one record). Do I use a subquery?Maybe. It's more likely that you need a different GROUP BY clause, since the GROUP BY clause determines how many rows of output there will be. I'll be able to say more after you post the sample data, results, and explanation.
You may want both a sub-query and a different GROUP BY clause. For example:
    WITH    got_group_by_columns     AS
         SELECT  a.empl_id
         ,     CASE
                        WHEN  c.category = 'E'
                  THEN  'Headcount Exempt'
                        ELSE  'Headcount Non-Exempt'
                END          AS accounts
         ,       CASE
                        WHEN a.company = 'ZEE'
                        THEN 'OH'
                        ELSE 'NA'
                END          AS market
         FROM              essbase.employee_pubinfo a
         LEFT OUTER JOIN  mms_dist_copy             b  ON   a.cost_ctr     = TRIM (b.bu)
         INNER JOIN       mms_gl_pay_groups        c  ON   a.pay_group      = c.group_code
         WHERE     a.employee_status     IN ('A', 'L', 'P', 'S')
         AND        fiscal_year           = '2012'
         AND        fiscal_month          = 'MARCH'
    SELECT    'ST'               AS ledger
    ,       accounts
    ,       market
    ,       'MARCH_12'          AS period
    ,       COUNT (empl_id)       AS head_count
    FROM       got_group_by_columns
    GROUP BY  accounts
    ,            market
;But that's just a wild guess.
You said you wanted "Help with count and sum". I see the COUNT, but what do you want with SUM? No doubt this will be clearer after you post the sample data and results.

  • Is Samsung Galaxy 4 compatible with iMac and other Apple products?

Is Samsung Galaxy 4 compatible with iMac and other Apple products?

Yes, the s4 is compatible with music and photo transfers between your imac.  I don't have experience with the cloud, but it should be the exact same thing.
Now, there will be a few differences between how you get the files onto said device.  With the iPhone, you may be able to do it wirelessly, but with the s4 you will have to plug it in.
The s4 will not work with iLife or iLife applications either.  However, bigger screen, more customizable ui and experience with samsung phones personally, I would recommend the s4 over the iPhone 5.

  • Are there any known compatibility issues with iMac and Google Chrome?

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with iMac and Google chrome. A Facebook friend who is a photographer posted recently that Chrome had ruined his iMac. He stead that it ran an update on itself that made safari and chrome unusable - slow running overall. In the end he had to reinstall his OS.
Is anyone aware of this and should I un-install Chrome off my Mac?
    Thanks,
    S.

There is nothing official but your post will attract a variety of personal experiences.   I once loaded Chrome and found myself with the dreaded MacKeeper malware, loads of pop ups and conflicts with my system.   Part of the problem is the huge range of add ons you are tempted to  take on, many of which are not as strictly tested as Apple extensions.   I would say, unless you have a specific reason, leave it alone.   The best browser is Firefox and for Macs, Safari is OK.

  • 20" iMac and external Dell 24" : doesn't work with Mini DVI to DV adapter!

Help! My lovely Dell HP LP2475w 24" Monitor can't be used as an external monitor. The native screen resolution is 1900x1200 60Hz. The Apple site claims the iMac is capable of being able to output this resolution.
When the HP is plugged in via the apple mini to dvi adapter a (tested) DVI lead, it recognises the monitor, but can't bring it to life. Just an occasional flash. In the resolution listing for the HP, the native resolution 1900x1200 isn't listed.
Plugging a cruddy old 20" Samsung with the same DVI leads works with no problems.
I NEED to use the HP for my Photo editing, and phone calls to Apples support have proved fruitless.
Does anyone have a 20" Intel iMac and an HP LP2475w set up that works?
    Many thanks for any help.

I'm glad you got it working!
So do you have it working at full 1900x1200? I've noticed a few more oddities about my iMac on this monitor. First off is that initially I could only go as high as 1680x1050, which I think is the native resolution of the iMac. Now I actually see two more options, one of which being 1920x1200. This surprises me since you couldn't get it to a full 1920. Both resolutions produce the same size image on the HP, but the 1680x1050 is fuzzier. It's odd to me, same dimensions just a little less clear. I can stretch that using the HP's settings to full screen, but I cannot adjust the 1920/1200 image even though there is a black border around it.
Can you tell me what color settings you have on the HP? I have really struggled to find something I like. I actually like how things look in my iMac, and my MBP. I can't get things to look the same on the HP. I also feel like text is just a hair fuzzier on the HP than on either the iMac or MBP. I'm tempted to try a used 23" Apple Cinema Display, but I'm not sure I'll have any better luck with that. I mostly concerned about the image quality when I use my laptop, and for some reason I'm not getting great results with the HP or Dell externals that I've tried.

  • Transferring files from original imac AND external CD for old imac

I have an original iMac that has tons of files on it I would like to save.  I created a LOT of materials when I was teaching and they are all on the old iMac.  It also has two games I bought on floppy discs that I would really like to keep.  I tried to load files on a Passport, but the iMac won't recognize it.  I have two other old iMacs (not quite originals) as well, but they won't take the Passport either.  They will both take a flash drive.  I can take word processing files (I can't even remember the application at the moment) off the older one and convert them to Apple Works on the other one, then take the converted files to our iMac 9.1 and convert them to Pages.  Then I put them on the Passport.  It is a pain, but at least it works.  I can also save the documents as pdfs and put them directly on the newer iMac and copy and paste in a Pages document.
The original iMac does not lend itself to any of this.  What is the best way to transfer files?  It seems like a very long time ago I tried to connect it to my newer iMac with an Ethernet cable but it wouldn't accept the cable.  If I am remembering correctly I called Apple Support and they said it lacked something that would allow it to connect.  I do not remember if I have tried a flash drive on it or not.  I believe I did and it would not recognize it.
Also, does anyone know how I can manage to save a copy of the games?  Since I bought them on floppies I can't reinstall them if something happens, but I believe it is within the law to make a backup copy.  Someone please correct me if I am wrong.  I do have an external floppy reader for the original iMac, but it only works on user created floppies, not commercial ones.  If I can manage to hook up to a flash drive or another computer and I simply save the game application, will that be enough?  Or is it not possible to know until I try?  Will saving the application get all the necessary files?
My second question concerns the newer (but still really old) iMacs.  My daughter would love to play some of the games she used to play on them, but the CD drives do not work.  Does anyone know where I can get an external CD drive that we can attach to these old iMacs so she can enjoy her games?  The computers work fine; she just can't insert the CDs, because it's next to impossible to get them out again.
I believe on the "newer" two we are running OS 9, at least on one of them.  I do not recall the OS on the original, but it is whatever it came with.  OS 8, perhaps?  It has been probably half a year since we fired it up.
I appreciate any advice and help anyone can give me.  We really like these old iMacs, which is why we still have three of them.  If we can save the files off the original iMac, we would still keep it so we could play our two old games from time to time.  :-)  I would part with one of the other old iMacs, but I really need to get the files first, and since it won't take a Passport I'm wondering if I'm stuck putting files a few at a time on a flash drive.  Do you think it would take an ethernet cable?  It seems like I tried to connect to my newer iMac but I couldn't get the computers to recognize each other.  I followed all the steps for sharing, but I still couldn't get it to work.
    Thank you so much.

Have you formatted the Western Digital Passport drive as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volume, or is it factory-formatted for PCs?  If the oldest iMac is only running OS 8, it can't recognize HFS+ volumes.  It was OS 8.1 that introduced that feature.  Additionally, the version of the USB support files (which is somewhat OS-dependent) on the iMacs hard drives affects what will or will not be recognized by those older computers.  With each successive release of the USB Adapter Support, the database of supported devices was broadened.  The easiest way to transfer the contents of the iMac's hard drive is to physically remove it from the computer and connect a USB-to-IDE adapter directly to it.  These adapters come with an external power supply to provide the 12 & 5 volts needed to power the drive.  The data connection block is designed to fit either a 3.5" hard drive or the smaller 2.5" laptop drive, as well as newer drives that connect via SATA.  It has an included USB cable that connects to a standard USB port, enabling direct reading/writing/file transfers from the hard drive to the computer to which it's connected.  These adapters are not Mac-specific in terms of design, so you can buy one at a PC store and use it.  For the purpose of identifying such an adapter, here's one that's often recommended in these Forums, carried by Other World Computing.  As I mentioned, this adapter is not platform-specific, so you can buy/use a less expensive one sold by PCs stores.  I bought one for $15 from Micro Center (PC store), and it has worked with Macs and PCs.  As for removing the hard drive from the old iMac - and I assume that it's one of the original models with a tray-loading optical drive (as opposed to the slightly newer ones that have a slot-loading optical drive), you can find directions for accomplishing that if you do a web search.  The link that I had for one site (that was good for years) is no longer valid.  The iMacs that have a problem ejecting disks are undoubtedly slot-loading models.  There are two wide rubber rollers inside those optical drives that grip the disk to pull it in or feed it out.  Over time, the rubber dries out, causing the rollers to lose their natural gripping capabilities.  If those iMacs have a FireWire port on the side, I'd suggest an external FireWire optical drive.  Today, the only type you'll find is a DVD±RW drive, which is more than you need for your intended purpose.  A basic CD-ROM drive isn't manufactured/sold anymore.  Other World Computing has a few FireWire optical drives, but their least expensive model sells for about $100.  Obviously, that costs more than the value of the entire iMac at this point, but the drive will also have USB connectivity as well.  You may find other uses for it with your other computers (Macs & PCs), especially if they don't have a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, or DVD±RW drive.  As for transferring a program itself, there could be other associated files.  You'd want to check the Extensions and Control Panels folders for any that are named to likely indicate being a part of the program's installed files.  The Preferences folder will probably have a file that has saved game settings, but a new one would be created when you run the program in another supported computer.  Depending on the age of the program - and you indicated that it was on floppy disks - its compatibility with newer, pre-OS X releases might be limited.  The external USB floppy drive that you use with the older iMac should read commercial floppy disks, but it will not recognize the older 800K (Double-Density) Mac-formatted floppy disks.  They're disks that typically format as 720K floppies in a PC, but the variable-speed FDD in older Power Macs was able to fit an extra 80K of data onto those disks.  A standard 720K "PC" floppy disk should be read by that drive, but it can't recognize an 800K "Mac" disk.  A 720K/800K Double-Density floppy disk only has the slide-lock hole at one corner, while a High-Density (1.44 MB) floppy disk has an additional hole at the opposite corner to differentiate it from the older type.

  • Need some help with backing up external hard drive using Time Machine

Hi all, I'm trying to work out the best way to back up multiple iPhoto libraries using Time Machine.
At the moment I have got an iMac and Macbook Pro, both of which have an iPhoto library (with different content).  Currently these are not backed up at all.  So what I want to do is back both up to an NAS drive, which I know is straightforward.
What I also want to do is create one iPhoto library on an external hard drive that I can use with my MBP, and then delete the iPhoto library on my MBP to free up some hard drive space (it's running slower and slower and I'm hoping that this might help it run quicker).
So, as I want to have the library on two seperate drives in case one fails, what I want to know is whether I could use Time Machine to back up my external hard drive as well as the internal drive of my MBP?  Also, would I need to have the external drive connected at all times for Time Machine to "see" it?
I hope that makes sense, all I seem to be doing currently is going round and round and can't work out whether what I want to do is possible or not.
    Thanks in advance

If I understand your goal correctly, you're considering using Time Machine as external storage, and it doesn't work that way.  Time Machine keeps around what it can, and older stuff gets flushed as the storage available to Time Machine reaches its lower threshold due to the addition of newer stuff.  When the older stuff gets flushed is not predictable.
It is possible to have several Time Machine backups aimed at the same target (this can be done with Apple Time Capsule, for instance), though you might want to partition the disks to ensure that the intended amount of storage is available.  Different NAS drives have different features here.
NAS is only as fast as your network connection, and that's almost always much slower than the in-box I/O connections; a local disk will be far faster than a NAS disk, just because of the bottleneck that is wired gigabit Ethernet, and most WiFi is slower and sometimes far slower than wired gigabit Ethernet.  FWIW.
If your MacBook Pro is old enough and you have $$ but aren't in a position to spend $$$$$ on a newer model, then consider an in-place drive upgrade.
If your network connection is fast enough to transfer the amount of data you're dealing with in a reasonable time, there are also hosted storage options.
You can use a NAS drive as storage independent of Time Machine, and relocate stuff there.  (You'll still want to have backups of that data, as NAS drives — even NAS with RAID — can still lose files, become corrupted or otherwise ruin your data day.
As for your performance, keeping about 10% or so free on the disks is the local preference, but it's worth reviewing the performance of the whole system — Performance Monitor, Console.app, etc — to see if there's something else going on, or if your system load and personal performance expectations are exceeding what your MacBook Pro can provide.

  • Help with partitioning an external drive

I've never done this, so am not sure how it works. I have an external drive (250 gb) that I use with SuperDuper to back up my Mac. Now I have decided I also want to keep a separate iTunes library on this drive. Apparently, so that SuperDuper doesn't erase the new iTunes library, the drive will need to be partitioned.
So. . . I will use Disk Utility to partition that drive into two and call each section something different? Will each section then look like a different drive (for instance, in SuperDuper)?
Are there any tricks or tips I should know before running Disk Utility's partition application?
I have searched the forum for info on this, but most of the people seemed to have at least basic knowledge of how it works, so didn't get much help there. I want to ask before I go and erase the drive.
    Thanks in advance!

Powerbook G4; Intel iMac 20inch Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Disk Utility offers following partition schemes:
    GUID -> Intel Mac
Apple Partition Map (APM) -> PPC Mac
Master Boot Record (MBR) -> PC
My apology for referring APM as PPC in my previous post. Native partition scheme (GUID for Intel Mac and APM for PPC Mac) must be used in order to install Mac OS X in the partition as startup disk, it allows booting as well as firmware update. If partition must be shared between Intel Mac and PPC Mac, then only APM scheme can be used since both Mac platforms are able to access APM partition but only PPC Mac can boot from this type of partition.
Since I have only one Intel Mac and booting from external storage is necessary for maintenance (full defragmentation) and repair (in case when internal drive has crashed), I use only GUID scheme for iMac's internal drive and Firewire external drive. Super Duper is used to mirror exactly internal drive to external drive regularly. The only time I have to perform file transfer between PPC Mac and Intel Mac with external drive was during hardware upgrade as follows:
    iBook G4 -> iMac G5 -> iMac CoreDuo -> iMac Core2Duo
Thus the decision for partition scheme of external drive depends on whether you have to boot Mac OS X from external drive (no in your case but highly recommeded for emergency plan) and whether sharing of external drive between your PowerBook G4 and iMac CoreDuo is desirable. I assume you will select APM scheme for your purpose since booting Mac OS X from external drive is not required.
Use of very old Master Boot Record (MBR) scheme will turn the external drive into PC drive completely. Unless this drive must be accessed in Windows environment as conventional PC drive for some PC disk utilities (these old utilities can't work with new GUID scheme), use of this non-native scheme for Mac OS X is not advisable.
Hopefully above information will help you in partitioning external drive. Since you do not have to preserve content of this external drive, why not go ahead and experiment with new partitions to see whether they serve your purpose ? Disk partitioning without writing zero or any random patterns on whole disk takes only few seconds. But it is a good idea to write zero (shortest time required) across whole disk surface to ensure that bad disk blocks are masked off to prevent future access and possible crash.

  • Problems with printer and external HD connected via Time Capsule with Windo

    Hello everyone!
In January I bought an iMac 27 "(OS version: OS X 10.6.2) and a week ago a Time Capsule 1TB.
I connected the iMac and a laptop with Windows XP SP3 both via ethernet to the TC, and to the USB port of the TC a USB hub to which I connected a Canon iP4200 and a LACIE 500GB HARD DISK.
I reformatted the hard disk file system to Lacie Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and installed MacDrive 8 in the laptop.
Now (after formatting the HD), with the iMac everything works: internet connection via ethernet or wireless, printing via ethernet or wireless as well as hard disk connection via ethernet or wireless.
Laptop, instead, is only able to connect to the internet via ethernet or wireless while it isn't able to see and use printer and external hard drive, even though I installed AirPort Utility for Windows!
The laptop also detects the AirPort disk of the TC but if I enter the (correct) password I get an error message!..
Please, somebody help me, I do not know what to do!
    Thanks

Have you run Bonjour on the Win PC's? Do a search on the support page and there's a description on getting things up and running from a WinPC in a Mac environment.

  • Help with iPhoto and back up

    Hi
Can someone help me... In order to create more space on the HD of my 2007 iMac (500gb) i copied the iPhoto library to my external HD (La Cie) and then put original in the trash wit a mind to delete it and only boot iPhoto from the Lacie. After consultation on this site i realised this was a mistake as i should do that with a completely separate HD not the one I use Time Machine on! So I've put the orginal iPhoto library back in the pictures folder and it works fine when i select it BUT its now called an iPhoto PACKAGE with a folder as an Icon NOT iPhoto library with the flower icon. Does this matter or should I now delete this package and copy the original back from the LaCie which IS still called a library with the little flower icon... Sorry this is so long winded but I need to give you all the info.
    Thank you for your help.

Hi Yes it does all is normal with it and no lost images. Just the iPhoto icon has been replaced with a Package folder since being taken back out of the trash.
    Thank you
