Help with internet speed on WRT54GL.

Just got my WRT54GL v1.1 firmware 4.30.13 a week ago.  My AT&T (bellsouth) DSL is much slower when connected to the router.  I have a Westell 6100 modem which is in bridged mode and DHCP is off.  Connected direct to the modem, I get 700-800Kb/s(down).  When I am connected through the router, I only get around 300-400Kb/s(down).  I get the same results both wireless and wired.  I have tried turning the firewall on the router off, enabling QoS on a specified port,  and disabling wireless.  Any other ideas that I can try would be greatly appreciated.    I was trying to fix this with the stock firmware, but would going with tomato be the best fix?
My setup is a desktop, laptop, and ps3 (all wired connections).  PPPoE setup with always on enabled.  DHCP setup for 3 ip's.  Need more info, let me know if I am forgeting something.  THanks again.

Basically when you update the firmware of your Router, it solves all the problem...
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
While you Re-configure all the settings on you Router... On the Router setup page, you need to change the MTU size from 1500 to 1365 and click on Save Settings...
On the Wireless Tab.... You need to change the Wireless Channel to : 11-2.462GHz to avaoid Interference.... And your Computers will work perfecly fine...
Set the security on your Router to WPA....
Click on Advance Wireless Settings... and Change the Becon Interval to 50, Fragmentation Threshold : 2306 and RTS Threshold : 2307 and save settings...
Now you can test the Internet Speed on your Computers...

• Help with wireless speed when wired is perfect!

I have Verizon FiOS internet and a Macbook 13" with OS X 10.6.4. When I am hard wired to my Verizon router, my internet speed is perfect (download/upload tests confirm this). When I am wireless, my internet crawls (and the download test reflects a FAR lower number). I spoke to Verizon and they said that it's not an internet problem because it works perfectly wired and that it's likely an Apple issue that's not allowing the wireless to work properly. My Verizon router IS next to my TV, but even when I moved it and put the computer right next to it, internet speed is incredibly slow. Let me know if you need further info and thanks so much in advance for any help!

Welcome to the discussions!

Is is possible for you to take the MacBook down to the coffee place, library or other location with wireless available? If so, you can test to see what type of connection you get.
If the MacBook connects well and pages load at good speeds...as I suspect they will...you will have confirmation that the MacBook is working fine and the issue is with the wireless on the FIOS router. If that's the case, you need to insist that FIOS techs come to your house so you can check out and test any changes they make before they leave.
If, on the other hand, you find that the MacBook still performs very slowly, then it's probably time to have the laptop's wireless card or internal antenna checked out for proper operation at the Apple store.

• Help with internet issues.

It seems every night for a couple of hours our internet drops to nearly unusable levels. See our speedtest here[1] we pay for *up to 18Mbps and this is really getting out of hand. On top of that after our recent move I specifically asked not to be upgraded to TV package or as they call it U-450 I have all the chat logs they emailed me from that conversation and the price will go up after 3 months even though I was told a certain pricing point for 1 year. Here[2] is a snippet from the chat showing the price told for a year and no to the U-450. Any help would be really appreciated. Also this[3] is my normal internet speed which still isn't great. I was already told I would not be put on U-450 which was a lie. And I've never once gotten my *up to 18mbps speed. Now I already looked at comcast and crazily enough I can get the same channels (I don't want) and *up to 75 Mbps for internet at the same price.

• A problem with internet speed

Hello!
Basically, as we all know, the internet went down nationally yesterday. However upon coming back online I've noticed my download rate has decreased significantly. I've had this issue a couple of months ago and an engineer came out to my house. He started doing line tests and said that there's nothing significantly wrong with the line and despite me living so far from the exchange (I live on a farm in the middle of no where ) my internet is quite strong.
The engineer did a speed test and indicated that the potential speed is 1.8mb. However, I was getting a significantly lower download speed and he did some tests and concluded that it was something regarding the ip profile setting the speed a lot lower that what's intended, resulting in me getting a low overall download speed. He called up the centre and told them to manually set my IP profile to 1.8mb, and since then I've had about a 1.2mb - 1.5mb speed according the speed tests, which I'm happy about. However since yesterday it's been lowering and lowering since the broadband went down, and I'm worried that I'm going to have to call out the engineer again to fix this problem.

Thanks for reading this,

HI Welcome to the forum
You currently have a1.4mb connection and your ip profile should be 1000k currently 750k providing you have no hub restarts or you do not manually restart the hub your profile will rise to 1000k automatically over the next 3/5 days you also have a higher then normal noise margin at 11.7db normal default is 6db again left alone for a few days it should reset if it has not reset by the time 5 days have passed then you will require the forum mods to intervene and carry out a manual reset for now though it is just a matter of waiting

• I am really new and need help with internet

Hi. I am really excited about the new MACS and want one really bad. First, I need to know what I would need to get for wireless internet. Next, are Macs compatible for Internet like MSN?
iBookG4   Windows XP   I want to get an iBookG4

I have a PowerBook G4 17 with a gig of ram that I absolutely couldn't live without. I use a Verizon aircard for internet access, and it's proven to be about 90% as fast as a high speed cable connection. I routinely send pics up to 3M in size with no problem. The only thing I have found that it really doesn't do very well is downloading software. And the Verizon card is really affordable--I have an unlimited plan that doesn't hurt each month at all. Hope this helps.

• Need help with wireless speeds..

I just got myself a WRT54GS wireless router and i have noticed the speeds being extremely slow. I've gone through all of the threads and didn't get anything that could help.  I have tried what some mention, about changing the beacon interval to 50 and the Frag and RTS to 2304. Also i have changed the wireless channel a couple of times. Still nothing..
Now onto my connection in general, i have cable and the speeds when direct connected are very fast. I typically download at about 300kb+ and i can get mb download speeds as well.  But while hooked up wirelessly it has been going at about 20kbs. When i try and watch streaming videos and all, it will be break up and all of that..due to the slow speed.  BTW i don't believe there is anything interfering at all. The comp is in the same room as the router as well
This is my first time dealing with wireless, so any info and help would be greatly appreciated. What are some good ways to get the speeds up?  The comp i have is new as well lol  I know it limits a lot of the help, but this is a pain in the butt. Thanks

Set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
What encryption are you using?  WEP?  WPA?  WPA2?  Some systems work significantly better with one encryption system vs. another.  So try something different.  WEP is no longer recommended.  You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2.  Password (key) should not have any spaces in it.
Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2 (= PSK2 = WPA with AES ). Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=893357 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
Hope this helps.

• Will a second line help my Internet speed?

I'm thinking about moving house, which is in a rural location! But the broadband speed is not that great there. I work from home and the kids are always on line, so my fear is that we grind to a stop if we are all using it at the same time. If I was to put in a second telephone line (one for work, one for pleasure) and used two different hubs, would this help to even the load? This may have a big influence on the purchase of this house as there is no plans for upgrading the local exchange to improve the broadband speed.
I'm open for any other suggestions on how I could keep the conflict of home and work broadband demand separate, as the house is perfect apart for this.
Many thanks

Thanks for this, this helps. I will just have to get my company to pick up the extra line rental.
Get them to provide you with a business line as it will probably be a bit faster, mine always was when I had one.  You will also get better fault fixing and help as well.
What county are you proposing to buy in ?

• Help with Internet connection (WRT54G)

Hopefully someone has some helpful advice to my question.
I'm not too sure where my problem is.  I think it's in the modem, but could be the router (less likely as explained).
I recently set up to open a few ports (I dont remember the exact #s) through port forwarding for Warcraft III.  To do so, you need to set up a custom IP for your connection through 192.168.1.1xx.  I did all this and was happy to see that I could now host online games for Warcraft III.  Fast forward to a week ago (I probably turned my desktop on about 3 times between the first time of opening ports and from successful uses until now) and I am unable to connect to any sort of Internet, on my desktop only.  My 3 laptops I have work just fine, but my desktop will not connect.  I'm not a computer dummy (but no computer expert either, I know my stuff) and have tried everything I could think of between setting up static IPs (192.168.1.99 is a static IP I do believe?) to obtaining IP addresses automatically to turning off the router and modem, etc. and nothing.  I am unable to even get to 192.168.1.1 to try and change my past changes and see if that would work.  Because of that, I'm at a loss.
Hopefully someone here will be able to help me.  I can still access everything on my desktop, there's just simply no internet connection.
Thanks in advance

there seems to be consistant issues with Linksys routers according to all the posts ive been reading for the past month while i try to fix my on and off again internet connection.  its becomming very annoying.  i have asked my cable company to replace my modem, which they did and that didn't even help.  last year i bought a new linksys router thinking it would solve my problem back then.  it did for a while, then my lap top wouldn't connect any, so i sent it into have it checked and it came back with no problems.  soooooooooo apparently, while i am connected to my neighbors open connection from his BELKIN ROUTER and even though the signal is very weak............amazingly enough!! i am still online while typing this.......funny eh?? WELL........it seems to me......that i guess i wont be buying linksys anything anymore.  Especially after spending hours on the help line (INDIA) trying to reset channels and reset the router box itself.  i give up.......i  have 2 pieces of crap routers for sale cheap......any takers?  dont waste your time.

• Help with Internet Connection

Hi, Have just installed a NetgearDG834G to my imac G5 with success as far as the connection was concerned. Safari works a treat and it's nice to have a permanent connection. However when I log onto AOL I cannot get any websites to open no matter how long I wait (password required for AOL).
AOL were no help. They say that they do not support AOL on a mac (in the UK that is). I am stuck on a 12 month contract after running a windows PC with AOL before buying the mac. Previously I was using a USB modem.
Being a novice with mac OS and only had the G5 for a month it is probably something I am doing wrong! Can anyone offer any guidance/advice?
Although I can use safari to browse, when I try to use the login from my bank's website nothing happens, just a blank screen.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Keith
imacG5   Mac OS X (10.4)

Hi,
After much of checking this, checking that and searching through manuals ect an article suggested that I change the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit!!) in the router settings. AOL(UK) have a maximum MTU rate of 1400. The router/modem was set at 1458 as default. I went into the router setup and found the MTU in LAN settings and changed it to 1400.
Apparently changing the MTU setting can help improve performance with an ISP or other internet services. For example Yahoo Mail, MSN and in particular AOL(UK). However it is advised to proceed with caution in every case!!!
Connection is a lot better now, although not as good as I expected (maybe I'm just expecting to much from a broadband connection).
Rod - If your reading this I also enabled pop-ups (Java was already checked) Perhaps this helped as well. No doubt there will be something else to frustrate in the near future. Thanks again to those who replied and I hope this thread may help someone else with a similar problem. These forums really are a great help.
Cheers
Keith

Please click My Settings on the right side of this window and update your profile.
Which internet provider is this? Are you using Safari/Firefox ??? More details please.

• Difficulties with internet speed (nothing to do with connection)

The internet on my macbook has been running extremely slowly in comparison to when I first bought it. I know its not relevant to internet connection itself because all other lap tops in my house and at university run normally. I've tried restarting it several times and I have cleaned the hard drive several times so I don't think its an issue with memory or anything like that.
I have also emptied the cache and I've checked the console log (though to be honest I have no idea what I'm looking at there)
Any ideas?

If your router is supplying full protocol speed, you don't say what your router protocol is, 802.11a/b/g/n?, but if your other systems are running at the full speed and you have done good housekeeping chores, perhaps something is wrong with the AirPort circuitry in the MacBook...can you get to an Apple genius bar and have the techs run some diagnostics to test the AirPort circuit?  They can tell if something is amiss.
