Help with ipod and computer shut downs...please.

I've posted this in two other forums to no avail -- lots of views, but no help.
My family now has 3 ipods (we only had 1 before) and yesterday I was trying to get them all set up - updates on the actual ipod, and I've updated itunes to 7.5. There are two issues here:
1) I am not able to register ANY of the ipods. I get all the way through the process to the very end and then it gives me an error message (after clicking the "No thanks" at the bottom of the page that asks if you want to download the videos) saying that the service couldn't be found? Or something like that. Ok, fine...I can handle not being able to register them for the time being.
2) I could keep itunes on all day long, as long as the Ipod is NOT CONNECTED. As soon as I connect the ipod (any of the 3 new ones - they all do the same thing) - ok, maybe not as soon as, but shortly thereafter - my entire computer shuts down. No error message, no blue screen of death, no warning - it just shuts down. It might be after I move a song from the "purchased" folder to the actual ipod. Or, as happened yesterday, it's right smack in the middle of a download (happened with both videos AND songs) and then of course, I have to try and purchase it again. I'm not even sure if it took my money already, but if it did, I'm SOL because I paid, but don't have the video/song since it never finished downloading.
I've done everything that's been recommended to me - I disabled all my start up programs (except the windows ones) and that didn't resolve anything.
My system is as follows:
Windows XP Home Edition (all updated except for microsoft office 2003)
Service Pack 2
AMD Athalon 64 3000+
1.81 GHz
2GB RAM
Not sure what else you need to know, to try and help me resolve this. Thanks for your time.

after computer shut down, it did not respond to any keys, sleep light was on. Sounds like a simple problem of doing something like playing a game that caused the CPU and/or GPU to work to the point of getting so hot it triggered thermal shutdown.
Oh, I'm assuming you have only one wife. Your topic title says "wives" which is plural. If there's more than one of them using the computer maybe that was the cause of the shutdown.

In Hard Drive > Users: is there more than just your Home folder displayed?
Possibly one you are not familiar with?
Other than this issue, is the system functioning properly?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
    Have you run Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

  • When I Connect My iPod, My Computer Shuts Down

I recently got Microsoft Vista, but I didn't know that this would cause problems to my iPod.
My iPod suddenly corrupted and I was pointless on what I needed to do. I kept receiving your ipod is corrupt messages from iTunes 7.1. Everytime I entered my computer, it froze, but didn't shut down.
Last night, I finally got into my computer and formatted it at default allocations on FAT32 with 27.8GB. I woke up earlier today and uninstalled 7.1 and downloaded 7.2 which works with Vista.
After plugging my iPod in and letting iTunes open up, a blue "Stop" message appeared saying the gibberish and the code 0x8F anthen there were other numbers in parntheses.
I hope I can gt soe help, Ireally don't want to splurge for another device or repair fees. Thanks in advance.

  • Taskeng.exe and computer shutting down

Over the past few weeks, when i unplug my laptop, after a few minutes it will turn off. But if when i turn it on and it was not plugged in, it does not turn ff so it not a battery problem. However, after i turn it back on, the black box and taskeng.exe appears.
After following other threads on what to do, i cannot seem to find anything which works and with exams approaching, i really need this to be fixed. Any suggestions and are these related as this never used to occur?
Another box comes up stating thatwindows cannot find 'c:\programm files (x86)\search extensions\client.exe
    please help!!

    Hi Emily,
1.For the unexpected shut down event ,please check the Event Viewer to collect the related error information.
    To check the Event Viewer
    Event Viewer \Windows Logs \System
2.” taskeng.exe” please open your task manager and right click to open the properties of this process and verify its location. Meanwhile check the startup options in the task manager.
    I agree with
S.Sengupta, you may need to get into the safe mode and run the antivirus software to have a full scan your machine .
To get into safe mode :
Restart the machine and press F8 before the Windows logo appears and then choose Safe mode from the
    Advanced Boot Options screen
    3.As for “ cannot find 'c:\programm files (x86)\search extensions\client.exe”.
Here is a similar symptom, please follow the solutions  Lemp offered to solve this problem:

  • Battery dies and computer shuts down

Up until about a week or two ago my MacBook was working fine. Yet now the battery is all messed up. Whenever the battery dies the whole system shuts down instead of going into safe sleep mode. I tried resetting the SMS, it worked at first, but then it just stopped going into safe sleep mode again. System profiler says that the battery is fine. I don't understand why it won't go into safe sleep mode, any help?

  • Problems with Ipod and Windows Media Player PLEASE HELP

Ok i am not sure if this is the correct forum or not but i am having a problem. I have a Windows computer (Yes a windows computer please dont everyone yell at me) and i have a new ipod 30 gig video. Ok well when i put itunes on it changes all my music on my computer gets changed to AAC format and i cannot play music in windows media player. Ok well that is not my big issue. I make videos for church using windows movie maker and i cannot import music because nothing windows can recognize Itunes format which is AAC. well is there anyway so i can use itunes and still use WIndows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker... Any info will be greatly appreciated. THANKS ALL

I believe Quicktime Pro (which is available for Windoze) is capable of opening any WMP files and then you just export it as iPod format. That is how I get video onto the iPod. The Music and Videos all can be placed onto your iPod through iTunes.
So, if you are creating videos in your program, and want them on your iPod, then that is how you can do it.
Videos on your iPod have nothing to do with the formatting of your music. But, as the earlier post stated, change your prefs in iTunes to import as MP3. But, your videos HAVE to be in MP4 or M4V format to work on the iPod.
    Good luck... and I'm a j3susfreak too

  • Upgraded my ipod and it shut down an hour later

So, around 11 am this morning I downloaded the latest version of itunes and it 'optimized my photos' before 'syncing' my pod. I listened to it without problem for about an hour. When I toggled the switch off safety and attempted to switch from one song to another it JUST SHUT OFF!
I tried to restart it, I tried to upload another itunes update, ect.. Nothing, my itunes doesn't even recognize when I put my pod in. The computer does recognize it as a storage device though.

thank you guys it freaking helped me!!
i was listening to GLEE and it shutdown
but it was charged and all and i tried holding both down but thanx SOO MUCH!!
    much apprieciated to you alll!

  • Help with Ipod and Itunes...

I have an ipod nano and have been using it successfully until tonight...I plugged it in to the USB port of my computer to upload some new songs and the ipod shows up as E:\ instead of "my ipod". It also says that I've used more space than I actually have. Any ideas on what I should do? Just FYI, I have already restarted my computer(twice), restarted the ipod, restarted itunes, tried using a different usb port, etc. Any other ideas on whats wrong?!?!

I plugged it in to the USB port of my computer to upload some new songs and the ipod shows up as E:\ instead of "my ipod". It also says that I've used more space than I actually have.
hmmm. is it showing up like that in your itunes sourcelist?
if so, it's probably worth checking on this possibility:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • HELP!! my computer shuts down at random ONLY when power supply is attached

I still have the factory power supply. My problem just happens when ever it feels like it. I could be watching something on Quicktime or have Adium running. I have had it happen to me regardless if it was being used a little or a lot. But It ONLY happens when my power supply is attached. If I plug in my power supply to charge my computer it will shut off. I have read some other posts pointing to the problem being the logic board and that a few of the iBook G4's are subject. If this is a common problem with this computer model I think Apple should recall them and fix the problem. Any insight will be great.

Alright everyone it has been a week since I replaced my DC board and no problems. But we all know how Murphy's law works BUT I'm calling this one fixed. Thanks for your suggestions and help
