Help with iTunes 6--no music store?

I would appreciate any help people can give me. I've spent all day wrestling with iTunes 6. My installation was done on 10/18. No problems until yesterday, when I tried to update podcasts and NPR wouldn't update. Then today, no podcasts would update, and the music store came up with a "timed out" error. Per other posts, I've done the following:
1. taken autoprotect off Symantec--no help
2. uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes--no help
3. removed all Windows hotfixes installed on 10/20--no help
4. deleted all cookies--no help
All my purhcased songs play (thank God that didn't happen--I'd have no music!), my internet connections are all fine and working, but I want the new Sheryl Crow album.
Anybody have suggestions? Anybody know if Apple is working on this? Seems like I'm not the only one...
Deb

hi Dr Deb!
people can actually run 6.0.x on some systems with just SP1. so since you've got some other issues mitigating against an SP2 install, i'd be inclined to stay there just at the moment.
2. I did a system rollback to the day after the iTunes 6 install when everything was working well, but it renamed some files and I started getting strange error messages when I tried to open the program, such as "-3" and "missing components, reinstall iTunes."
that one i believe i understand. if you do a system restore "over top" of an itunes or QT installation, you strip out a bunch of the registry installation entries, and get the "some of the required files ..." message when you try to launch itunes. so i think you may have gone over the top of one of your reinstalls here. here's a reference on System Restore:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/plan/faqsrwxp.mspx
... so i think a clean uninstall and reinstall might be helpful here.
The weird thing is, whenever I touch iTunes, my Symantec program re-enables without my touching it--very weird, and so I have to constantly keep an eye on it.
what Symantec product are you running, Deb? i've seen something like that happen before to Jose. he had one of the nastier versions of the Norton Internet Security 2005 launch suppression problems, where some of the QT processes are being suppressed. he had to use the "Lorraine" technique to get past that:
Lorraine M, "NIS/i-tunes problem rectified" #2, 01:51am Oct 17, 2005
we've had some further nice observations on the NIS 2005 issues come in recently from Glen:
Glen Gardner, "NIS/i-tunes problem rectified" #17, 09:24pm Oct 22, 2005
even if you aren't running NIS 2005, it might be possible to transfer some of the Glen/Lorraine observations to your situation. (granted, i've never seen a Norton/Music-Store interaction produce quite your symptoms before.)

Connect your device, select it in the left-hand column, then change the settings on the various tabs to sync the media content your library to the device. Anything already on it may be removed. If that would be a problem see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • HT1349 How do I get help with Itunes when I dont have a serial number for a Mac because I am not using a Mac???????

I just want to get some help using itunes.  I have downladed music - paid for music, and can't get it into itunes.  When I used th e'support' thing it just wanted to know my Mac serial numbers!!  I don't have a Mac I hace a standard non Mac PC.  So why can't I get help with itunes?  Its taken me half an hour to get into this support thing because every single name I chose was taken!!!!  Its just a nightmare.  I hate it!
And now it tells me I must 'choose a community' and itunes isn;t listed!  It gets worse!  So I chose any community because this is just a never ending nightmare.  40 minutes ago now I clicked on support for itunes and I ended up here!

Thanks again.  I bought two albums.  I've no idea what I use to open a zip file.  I just tell it to open and it ususally does but this time Windows media player won't do it!
I am in the UK and its 23.43 so I have to give up and go to bed now.  As I said I have had no probes with Amazon downloads.  I did email CD baby for help but they just sent the links that you offered earlier.
I have tried to burn to CD so I can listen that way but though I go through all the motions I can't add the tracks to the burn list by copying and pasting, and I can't 'drag the tracks here' beacuse the tracks aren't showing, just the whole album folder.  It looks like this:
    SO02294360-catherinefeeny12-mp3 (1).zip
    file:///C:/Users/User/Downloads/SO02294360-catherinefeeny12-mp3.zip

Have to give up for today and go to bed but your responses are very much appreciated.  Thank you

First, have you moved or renamed the iTunes or iTunes Music folders, or any of the folder or track files in those folders, since iTunes last worked correctly?

  • Help with Itunes store connection

    Hi
I have recently downloded version 7 of Itunes but am having problems accessing the Itunes store when I click on it the following error message appears
Itunes could not connect to Itunes Store. The network connection was reset make sure your network connection is active and try again.
    Please help

    Hello
I had exactly the same problem. I tried all of the above suggestions but the problem persisted. I contacted my ISP (Tiscali) and got this response from them. The first suggestion worked for me after I had rebooted. The steps must be performed in sequence:
Step : 1 Check SSL & TSL settings
Step : 2 Add port 80 and 443 if you have installed Norton Internet Security
Step : 3 Add "ituneshelper.exe" to the list of allowed application, if your computer is installed with Windows XP Service Pack II
Step : 4 Perform some advanced troubleshooting steps
    # Step 1 : Ensure the SSL and TSL are checked #
    1. Start Internet Explorer.
    2. Click Tools/Internet Options
    3. In the Advanced Tab scroll down to Security and make the that SSL 2.0 and TSL 1.0 are checked.
    # Step 2 : If your computer is immunized with Norton Internet Security #
If you are using iTunes 6.0.4.2 and have Norton Internet Security installed then make sure that Ports 80 and 443 are added. You can perform the following steps to add the ports:
iTunes must connect to the Internet to download music from the Music Store or get CD track information from CDDB. Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall may block iTunes from doing these things.
To set up Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall to allow iTunes to connect to the Internet, check for a program rule for iTunes. Set the rule to permit all. If no program rule exists for iTunes, add a rule.
To check for an existing program rule for iTunes
    1. Start Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
    2. Click Personal Firewall.
    3. Click Configure.
    4. On the Programs tab, scroll through the Manual Program Control window until you find iTunes.
    5. Do one of the following:
    * If you find iTunes, then verify that the Internet Access setting is Permit All. If it is set to Deny, then set it to Permit All.
    * If you do not find iTunes in this list, then you must add a program rule to allow iTunes to access the Internet.
To add a program rule for iTunes
    1. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
    2. Click Personal Firewall.
    3. Click Configure.
    4. On the Programs tab, click Add.
    5. In the Select a program window, browse to iTunes.exe.
    6. Click Open.
    7. In the Program Control window, click Permit All, then click OK.
    8. Repeat steps 4–7 for iTunesHelper.exe.
    9. Click OK.
    # Step 3 : If you are using Windows XP Service Pack II : #
In case you are using Windows XP Service Pack II then make sure to unblock the ituneshelper.exe. Please perform the following steps:
    1. Start Control Panel - > "Security Center".
    2. Selected firewall/program permissions, scrolled down to the "ituneshelper.exe" and changed the pull down menu from block to allow.
    # Step 4 : Perform Advanced Troubleshooting steps #
In case issue persists after performing all the steps, I request you to visit the following link and perform some advanced steps:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300870
Note: The link above will take you to a non Tiscali's Web site. Tiscali does not control and is not responsible for information outside of the Tiscali's Web site.

  • Help with iTunes store...

I have some questions about iTunes store...
    1:
Games on iTunes store says they work on iPod gen5 and iPod classic. Does it matter if you have iPod classic 80/160gb or 120gb?
    2:
can you buy games with the gift cards for iTunes or just music?
    3:
The game "phase"(guitar hero-ish game), does it only sync with songs from iTunes? Or will i be able to play with songs i got from my CDs too?
    thx

1:Games on iTunes store says they work on iPod gen5 and iPod classic. Does it matter if you have iPod classic 80/160gb or 120gb?
The size of the iPod's storage doesn't matter, only the model of iPod.
2:can you buy games with the gift cards for iTunes or just music?
Gift cards can be used for games unless you're in Canada.
3:The game "phase"(guitar hero-ish game), does it only sync with songs from iTunes? Or will i be able to play with songs i got from my CDs too?
It appears that it will work with any tracks in your iTunes library, but I can't be certain. Perhaps someone who has the game will see your question and post a definitive answer.
    Regards.

  • Apple:please update itunes with ability to disable music store permenanty

Although I believe you when you say you are not storing data on your users, I still would feel more comfortable not having the music store open unless I open it. I should not be connected to you everytime I open itunes , please include the option to disable this default. I should never be connected to the internet just because I want to listen to my own music.
    Scott Bass

My issue isn't so much with Apple seeing what songs I'm playing, and it's cool that you can just turn the feature off. After all, I'm a loyal Apple customer who regularly buys songs from iTMS and even computers and stuff from Apple Store (I own 3 Macs, 1 Airport Express, and 1 iPod).
My concern is this third-party involvement:
    http://since1968.com/article/155/omniture-itunes
I don't like Apple sending any info of mine to a 3rd party for some nefariously furtive reason, regardless of how well it's legally bulwarked in their EULA.

  • Need help with Itunes Authorization issue

I've been a Itunes/Ipod user for a couple years. During that time, I've sure spent over $500.00 on Itunes music from the Itunes store for my Ipod. My daugter and I both have Ipods.. There have only been 2 machines with Itunes installed here but I occasionally rebuild my computers to have the latest and greatest hardware for my business.. The other day I backed up all my music and data before rebuilding my machine due to hardware upgrades. Everything went smoothly including importing my purchased music back into Itunes.. The problem is I can't listen to it now. When I try to double click a song I get an error that says "You have already authorized 5 computers with this account. To authorize this computer you must first deauthorize one of the other computers" This isn't possible because the computers aren't around anymore to deauthorize. They were all housed (except 1, my daughters pc) in the same case as I have now.. Please respond...

The other day I backed up all my music and data before rebuilding my machine due to hardware upgrades.
okay. you may have ended up with multiple authorisations on that PC due to the system changes. if so the following documents should be of some help with techniques for freeing up authorisations:

  • HELP!Cannot connect to music store!

Hi I have posted a message like this before but EVERY time I open the itunes music store I get a error that says:Network connection was refused, check your connection and try again latter. but my connection is FINE! I have turned off firewalls, security stuff ect.. If ANYBODY can give me any help I would LOVE it soooooo much! Thanks for looking!

    .
I'm getting the same error message when i connect my linksys router. With the router connected I can get on the internet just fine. Thw problem is that music store in iTunes is refused. I can access the music store if i connect the modem directly to my PC. This leads me to believe the internal firewall in the router needs to be configured to allow iTunes to connect to the music store. If any one knows how to do this that would be great. I think it would also help a lot of other people having this as well   Windows XP   </span<br>

  • Help with iTunes library

    Hi there,
I've been having some problems with my iTunes library and I really need help.
It all started when I wanted to restore my iphone because it being slow!! It then said that there wasn't enough space on the hard drive. So in my infinite cleverness (that I don't have!!) I'm not really sure what I did. But I accidentally deleted all my music files and then from the recycle bin I've got them back but they aren't in album folders anymore it's just one long list of songs.
My iTunes library is empty of all things so if i add these files to iTunes will it arrange them into it (not in iTunes program) but in the windows folder? Does iTunes copy the original music file to the 'iTunes media' file?
If so what's the best settings for iTunes?
Store the original music files on c: or external HD and then do i need to choose the organize and copy setting on iTunes? and if so, where too?
So the c: drive is full and the d: has got some stuff but not sure what it is. But it has 90 odd gb of free space!!
The laptop is 4 years old so it's full of crap. Basically!!
    Please help.

Using iTunes, you cannot sync from the iPod to your computer. If you want the songs on both computers, you will have to manually copy all your songs to the other computer, add them to that iTunes library, then sync.
Alternatively, you can manually manage the iPod, which will let you play the songs on the computer without the songs (only when the iPod is connected), but you will not be able to copy them into your iTunes music library using iTunes alone.

  • Cannot connect iTunes to the Music Store, Dell computer, XP Pro

I have a Dell XPS computer (about 2.5 years old) running Windows XP Pro w/service pack 2.
I bought an iPod way before Christmas, and have never (not once) been able to access the music store from my computer. Sometimes the "progress bar" just shows the "candy cane" progress meter with zero progress, sometimes the progress bars gets to about 90%, sometimes the progress bar completes, and I actually get an opening page displayed from the music store, but I can never get ANY further, cannot login, setup a new account, authorize my computer for any music, etc.
My wife's computer just a few feet away from mine, is a newer Dell XPS running XP Service Pack2, same home network, same router, SAME ISP, all works fine. Zero on my computer.
As stated it's XP Pro, w/service pack 2. Norton AntiVirus 2003 (OEM from Dell), using the XP Firewall, no other accelerator software etc.
    I've tried:
    a) disabling Norton
    b) disabling Firewall
    c) I've done the msconfig startup (as detailed online), not allowing anything must MS services and iPod programs to start up
I'm getting really, really tired of this. This is the ONLY program on my computer not working properly and requiring this kind of time. I'm extremely computer saavy (write my own software in vb.net, etc.) and can try anything anyone suggests, but so far NOTHING has made any difference.
Based on the logic that my wife's computer works fine, I'd say it's not the network, router, router firewall, ISP or any of those usual suspects. In fact I've tried dialup too direct from my computer (just to try and authorize ONE video my wife bought I would like to play on mine) but no luck.
Any other suggestions. Honestly - not accessing the Music Store isn't the end of the world to me entertainment wise. but it really, really frustrates me that Apple is no help (oh yes, I emailed them too and got the boilerplate response) and that I can't get on.
Sorry for such a long post, any ideas?
Dell XPS   Windows XP Pro   XP Pro Service Pack 2, Norton Antivirus 2003
Dell XPS   Windows XP Pro   XP Pro Service Pack 2

    1) What exactly would I check on the router to make sure it's open it iTMS for MY computer? I know I said I'm an "advanced user" but you got me on that one, lol!
That would depend on the router. I know that some routers with firewalls control the ports individually by internal IP address, but without knowing your model of router, I don't know if that applies in your case (and I might well not know even if you told me the model; I'm only familar with a couple). If your router has a firewall and it can be shut off completely, you might give that a try as a test.
    2) I'll try uninstall and reinstall again. I've never done the registry entry check, so just search for "itunes" and stuff like that and delete?
iTunes and QuickTime, yes. CCCleaner (freeware) might help.
    3) Is there any benefit to doing the entire re-install while in the msconfig "startup" mode, i.e. with everything else turned off?
That I can't say, not having done it. Sorry; perhaps someone else will have an opinion about that.
