Help with iTunes ERROR: duplicate file name specified - where/how?

When starting up iTunes (version 10.6.1) I get an error message:
Duplicate file name was specified.
Needless to say, no clue as to what file name it is referring to. Furthermore, there are 5 songs which I can not play, bought from the iTiunes store. Contacted the iTunes store - they "enabled" the download for those 5 songs. When I connect to the iTunes store, login and check for downloads etc. I get the error message:
Unable to check for available downloads. Duplicate file name was specified.

The way to fix this is
1. Go to Computer
2. Click Operating System Hard-Drive (C:)
3. Scroll to Program Files (or) Program Files (x86)
4. Scroll to iTunes, open it
5. Find iTunes.exe
6. Right Click and go to Properties
7. Click Compatibility you will see something that stats
Privilege level
Run this program as an administrator.
8. Click this and Click Apply and then Ok NOW Open iTunes
This worked on mine let me know if it doesnt!

You can try going to iTunes with your device connected, select your device, then click view, show duplicate items

Can't purchase music - duplicate file name specified

Recently I started having a problem with iTunes. When I open iTunes I get an error message "Duplicate file name specified". I can close the message window and iTunes seems to function normally for most activities, however, if I try to buy a song from the iTunes store, I get the following message:
"Could not purchase "song name". A duplicate file name was specified. There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later." Even after repeated tries I cannot purchase.
After doing a little internet research, I tried restoring an older iTunes library file that predated the problem, but no change. I did a complete uninstall/reinstall of iTunes and got the error message upon first opening of the new version even before I directed it to my existing library.
I'm hoping someone has another suggestion since I cannot make iTunes purchases now. Thanks.

I'm having the same issue. Old ipod 160 gig worked for years; it crashed. I bought a new "used" ipod. It starts reading all my music and syncs a few songs then crashes. I get the same screen you do about duplicate, etc. Very frustrating. I'm downloaded the new iTunes (not impressed). I've tried unchecking most of my music to see if that would help but it didn't. my computer deleted all of my songs off my ipod one time with i unplugged it, i think i unplugged it too soon and it wasn't finished ejecting. now every time i plug it in it gives me an error saying "the ipod 'Skye' cannot be synced, a duplicate file name was specified." Never mind. I found out how to fix the problem
- Go to "Computer"
- Right click on your IPod icon
- Click "Properties"
- Go to the "Tools" tab
- Under "Error -checking" cilck the "Check now..." button
After doing all of that, ITunes now works like normal for me.

I can't synch my iPod classic. "A duplicate file name was specified." I tried on two different computers on which it had previously worked fine.

Try deleting the iPod Photo Cache from the nominated folder that you have set up to sync photos to the devices.

Hello,
I have an iPad 64gb. Been trying to load files on it with plenty of memory to spare. generally though i cant load more than about 35mb at a time before the message "file name here cannot be copied because an error occured. There is not enough memory available." pops up. I keep needing to close itunes, unplug my ipad, and restart it again. but the issue remeains the same.
when i open up task manager i notice that memory usage by itunes goes from 95,000K to 1,750,000K in under 30sec which is when i get the error message. any solutions? currently running itunes on Vista.

I am working on my fiance's mother printer doing some testing as to why the printer will not communicate with her computer..
Her computer runs Windows 7.
The computer I am testing with runs Windows XP.
I am trying to install the drivers that I got from:

While during the installation.. I got the error "The file HPZius12.sys on HP CD is needed."
Well, she does not have the CD(Which is why I downloaded off the website).. But this error came up.. I downloaded the full package driver(About 340+ MB).
I can understand about this error coming up with a CD that may have been corrupted or something.. But How can I fix it if the Driver came straight from the HP site???
Can anyone help?

It does seem as if the file HPZius12.sys is corrupted or missing. Check out the link below to resolve this issue. The directions are not for your exact printer, and are for a cd installation, but the concept should work all the same:

Help with Library Management - duplicate files, single develop settings.

I use Lightroom 5 and local disk as my supposed master.
I use GoodSync and an external drive as my backup.
When I am traveling I use my Macbook and the external drive - and this has caused the following problem;
Instead of just being a backup, my external drive is now a folder in Lightroom.
The develop settings are associated with the files on that drive and I have duplicates through the synchronisation process that I run with Goodsync.
Can I move the develop settings (All, Automagically) back to the files located on my local drive and remove the folder from Lightroom?
I will manage my backup process differently.
Or .. do I create a new catalog and import the files from ... the external drive first? Or the local?
Possibly external to ensure I don't lose any settings?
Any advice, especially if someone else has found themselves in this predicament, would be greatly appreciated!

When using a Finder specifier you also need to include the startup disk. There are a few different domains that the path to command will work with. If you don't specify a domain, such as your first example, the assumption is that you want the user domain. The /Library/Preferences folder is in the local domain so you can use the following command to get its path:
path to preferences folder from local domain

Really? My iPad is just dropping out and leaving iTunes frozen on 'stage 4 of 4' then I get a time out message. Apparently it hasn't sync'd since 1 November.

When starting iTunes I get a message - a duplicate file name was specified

I had to restore my system (Windows 7). I deleted and recreated my profile and copied all my music back into my profile as well as all of the AppData settings for iTunes. All of my music and playlists are fine and all of my settings are fine.
However, now I am getting the following error whenever I start iTunes:
A duplicate file name was specified
I am running iTunes 10.5.3.3.
How do I fix this?

I would recommend uninstalling iTunes altogether, and then installing the newest version from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Podcasts broken in 9.2 with error "A duplicate file name was specified"

Ever since the 9.2 upgrade my podcasts have not been able to update. The following error message is displayed when I click the icon next to the podcast:
+There was a problem downloading "... podcast name ...". A duplicate file name was specified.+
Digging in the iTunes download directory I see that a directory entry is created for each podcast (with a .tmp suffix). Inside there is a download.mp3 that is zero bytes in size.
I've tried reorganizing the library, restarting, reinstalling, etc.
Not sure if this matters, but I've been mounting my itunes library via nfs for the past five years or so without any issue.
I tried to see what iTunes was up to via dtrace/iosnoop but it appears that they've gone and restricted that at the OS level -- so no luck there. Any luck here?

Close iTunes, delete the download directory, and restart.
