Help with iTunes Shared Library (Vista and OS X)

I am trying to share my Vista-based iTunes library with my new iMac. I have an issue now that iTunes does not let me select the shared iTunes library that resides on the PC. The following is how things are set up
1) I've moved all of my PC-based music, my iTunes Library (.itl) file and the cover art to an external HD on my Vista PC.
2) I've set permissions on all of the Vista files (music, library, art) to be read/write for available to all connected users.
3) I have also mounted the PC-based external drive on my iMac. Permissions seem to be ok, as when I view files via the Finder, they are visable and accessible.
4) However, when I try to open iTunes on iMac to change the shared library (using the OPTION key), the iTunes Library.itl file on the hard drive is completely greyed out. No matter how I change permissions or sharing on the Vista machine, I cannot seem to select the shared library.
5) Interesting that I HAVE successfully accessed the same library through another Windows-based machine (Windows XP). In that instance I can access the network drive and select the iTunes Library.itl file no problem. Music streams fine after I do that. Also, from my iMac I am able to create files in the same directory where the iTunes files reside (using program like Text Editor) so it seems I do have write access and permissions to the directory.
Any clue why this is happening? It seems like iTunes is the one program that is not picking up the permissions from the iMac, but other Mac programs are. It's driving me a little nuts at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thx

Bump. Same issue. Help please.

  • Help with iTunes 2.0.4 and library on networked Mac

Hello, I was given an old Powermac G3 (blue and white).  It's running Mac OS 9 and iTunes 2.0.4. I have it hooked up in my garage. I want to listen to my iTunes while I'm out there working on stuff. My iTunes library is on my MacBook Pro in the house. I cannot get the G3 to see my iTunes library, or my MBP. I have sharing enabled on my MBP. Both computers have internet access through the network, and I have no issues using my iPhone 5 with my MBP. I don't understand what's going on, but I would love to get the garage computer working! Help, please!

What kind of networking?  When I think of G3s I do not think of wireless capability, so do you have some kind of Ethernet LAN?  Can the G3 "see" the Macbook Pro for anything?
What kind of sharing?  General file sharing?  iTunes Library sharing (again not sure when this came in and if it was present with iTunes 2)?

  • Help with itunes music library view

My itunes library view is only showing purcahsed items, not my full music library.  I've checked advanced preferences and am pointed to the correct library and all my files are there but they aren't showing in the library view?  I'm terrified to sync my devices and lose all of my music and playlists.

I can't find any file with an .itl extension (but I can't find one on our other Mac, either, so it isn't just my MacBook). In addition to the iTunes Music Library.xml file, there's a file [on both our Macs] that's simply called "iTunes Libary" (the file kind is listed as "iTunes Database File") and that's the other file I read not to touch or delete.
    Would that be the one?
It says it was created on July 3rd and last updated yesterday, so if that does turn out to be the one, then that really could be the end of the playlists. July 3rd was the day I first started trying to move my library (and failed, as the new HD was defective and ate everything I put on it before imploding, so I'm putting everything back in the original location). I didn't read the instructions not to touch the .xml file until Friday or Saturday, and I can't remember if I checked to see if the playlists were still there between the 3rd and yesterday. So it's possible I did accidentally delete it on the 3rd.
But I think I was still seeing stuff in my playlists over the weekend, and looking at my Recent Tracks Played list on Last.fm, it looks like I was listening to stuff on at least one of my iTunes playlists on the 5th. I'm pretty sure they were still intact after the 3rd.

  • Need help with Itunes 11.0.1 and Iphone

Before my update to the dreadful Itunes 11.0.1, (it lost all my playlists) Itunes stayed in the same place after moving a song. Now it pops back to the top. Is there any way of keeping the main library on the last song I moved? When making a new playlist it is nice to just go through the list, instead of always starting over and having to scroll down.  I do not updating again!! Not after the nightmare of the last update. Unless it corrects this issue.
Or, can I go back?? Just joking!

I'm assuming you followed a forum like Gizmodo to load the latest version of iOS 7 Beta on your device
Alot of those forums forget to mention, iTunes 11.0.5 will allow you to update to the iOS 7 Beta but your device will no longer work unless you have the developer version of iTunes as well....
I'd suggest you to research how to downgrade back to 6.1.3/4 and wait a few days for the iOS to be released,

  • Help with itunes - was locking up and uninstalled now it won't work at all

Last week, every time I connected my iphone it would lock up during the sync. So this weekend I uninstalled every apple product on my computer so that i could get a clean install. Now, nothing will open. i've reinstalled itunes, etc at least 4 times. It won't open, I keep getting an error message.
"The procedure entry point QTCF_CRUniCharGetUnicodePropertyDataForPlane could not be located in the dynamic link libray QTCF.dll."
    What does that mean?

"The procedure entry point QTCF_CRUniCharGetUnicodePropertyDataForPlane could not be located in the dynamic link libray QTCF.dll."
That one is usually caused by a misplaced older version of QTCF.dll.
If you've got a 32-bit vista, first look to see if there's a copy of QTCF.dll lurking in your C:\Windows\system32\ folder. If you find one there, drag it out onto the desktop.
If you've got a 64-bit vista, first look to see if there's a copy of QTCF.dll lurking in your C:\Windows\sysWOW64\ folder. If you find one there, drag it out onto the desktop.
Now try launching iTunes again. Does it launch properly this time?

  • With ITunes in Windows Vista, I've attempted to drag and drop a homemade video folder but it doesn't show up in my ITunes library.  What should I be doing differently?

With ITunes in Windows Vista, I've attempted to drag and drop a homemade video folder from my Desktop to ITunes on the PC in order to transfer it to my IPad (as per instructions), but it doesn't show up in my ITunes library.  What else should I be doing?

Do you have any videos/movies in the video app?
In iTunes if you right click on the video and select Get Info and go to the Option tap what Media Type is shown?

I can not sync with itunes iphone , is catching, and when it begins to sync is a long time and then appears a message that no time to help sincronização.Me am without some music

You are correct.  Syncing should transfer any purchased media, including videos, from your device to your iTunes library provided your computer is authorized for the Apple ID used to make these purchases.  You mentioned that you have uninstalled iTunes before, but if you didn't follow this guide exactly, uninstalling iTunes and all of its components in the order specified, it may not have been successful so you should try again:  Windows XP or Windows Vista/7.

  • Multiple issues with iTunes Sharing. Help?

I have a Mac mini running 10.6.8 with iTunes 11.0.2 (and all other updates) connected to my living room television. I use it as a storage/playback system for my movie collection and a small amount of MP3s (about 250). This evening I decided to enable Home Sharing on all of my devices because, why not? All of my devices share the same Apple ID.
First up was my daughter's iPad (original model) running iOS 5.1.1. It also had no problem with any of my media from the Mac mini, and still allows me to play locally-stored media giving me the option of using the iPad media or the Shared media.
Next, an old iPhone 3GS. My daughter uses this primarily as a camera and as an MP3 player for when she's outside. It has no SIM card but is happily running iOS 6.1.2. This is where I had problems. While the 3GS is able to see and play back all of its locally-stored media, the only Shared media it will play is the MP3 library. When I use the "Video" app it doesn't even show the option for Shared media, only showing me the locally-stored media.
So now I pull out my iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.2 and it can see and play everything, both locally-stored and the Shared library.
It's then that I realize there's something else amiss. I have two other Macs on my network with shared iTunes libraries under my Apple ID including an iMac (10.7.5, iTunes 11.0.2, and all other updates) and a second Mac mini (10.6.8, iTunes 11.0.2, and all other updates). My wife also has her MacBook Pro (10.7.5, iTunes 11.0.2, and all other updates) although she has her own Apple ID. With all Macs turned on, on the same network, and with iTunes running and sharing enabled:
iTunes on the first Mac mini sees all three shared iTunes libraries (my iMac, my wife's MacBook Pro, and the second Mac mini).
iTunes on my iMac sees none of the shared iTunes libraries.
iTunes on my wife's MacBook Pro sees all three shared iTunes libraries (my iMac and both Mac minis).
iTunes on the second Mac mini sees all three shared iTunes libraries (my iMac, my wife's MacBook Pro, and the first Mac mini).
All of the iOS devices sees ONLY the first Mac mini's shared iTunes library, none of the others.
I've done a ton of troubleshooting attempts to figure this out; multiple restarts and cold reboots of every device, rebooting the router, deleting preference files, creating new user accounts, restoring iOS devices to factory defaults, you name it. One disappointing result occurred when I deauthorized my first Mac mini. Suddenly it disappeared from all iOS devices. Figuring I was on to something I reauthorized that Mac mini — but it never returned on the iOS devices. So although I did have my first Mac mini successfully shared at first, now I don't.
I did notice that Apple says I have four authorized computers on my Apple ID. I'm not sure what the count is there. Does that include iOS devices? I know my iMac and my first Mac mini are authorized under my Apple ID but those are the only "computers" that are authorized.
What ever happened to "Macs just work"?

I am having the same problem but might able to shed some light on the authorized computers listed:
Did you ever have an old mac not in use anymore that was authorized? Even if you formatted the hard drive or reinstalled the OS is would show up as authorized unless you took the step to deauthorize it first. I had this problem when I upgraded my laptop - even though I formatted it I never deauthorized it so I had to "Deauthorize all" to get rid of it.
Also - I've read on this board that even installing a new OS will add an authorized computer count. Simplest solution is to deauthorize all then reauthorize your two computers. Don't worry - you won't lose any data or media in your iTunes. It will just tell you you're not authorized to play that media (for media with DRM).

  • Itunes Shared Library between Mac and Windows isn't sharing videos properly

Hi, I'm a bit new to the mac world, but I'm the proud owner of a new macmini. I also own a Windows 7 machine.
My problem is with the Itunes Shared library. Itunes 10 on my mac is set up to share everything, including podcasts. I can see these from Itunes 10 on Windows, and I can play music (and audio podcasts), but video is hit or miss.
Videos downloaded from Itunes U tend to work, lectures and stuff.
Video podcasts (also downloaded from Itunes Store) and other videos don't work at all. Itunes just doesn't play the video, and doesn't even launch the "black screen". The timer remains at 0.00.
On the other hand, sharing videos from the PC to Mac works well, i.e. my mac can see the contents of the itunes shared library on Windows and play videos. It just doesn't work the other way around.
Thanks for reading and I hope this problem can be fixed.

  • Tracing iTunes Shared Library

    Hello Apple People,
Im managing a large number of apple computers, and have recently noticed that some clients have some questionable material that they are sharing in their iTunes library.
I was wandering how do you track down the user who is supplying the shared library. I have started scanning Port 3689, which allows iTunes sharing between Macs, but if there is some temporary file being stored somewhere that gives perhaps an MAC address, or even an IP, that would be better.
    Thanks

    macmenno,
I just read this post and I'm wondering if you can helpme in my problem - I'm completely stumped!
Below is pasted from my post:
"Apple techs, I've posted this topic before and no one has been able to solve - I believe it's a bug in the program.......
All my macs are running 10.4.7, QT 7.1.3, itunes 7 (problem happened with QT 7.1.2, itunes 6.+)
I'm sharing my itunes songs in my MDD G4(host). I access my g4's shared library from my other mac's either via ethernet or wireless (home LAN).
I have discovered that I cannot play ANY songs that have been encoded as mp3 joint stereo. My mp3's were encoded this way because this was my previous itunes versions (itunes 3 I think) default encoding setting.
When I access my hosts itunes shared library from one of my 'client' macs and view my mp3 joint stereo files, I first notice that they have a 'QuickTime movie file(remote)' in the Kind property list.
They do not list this way on the host - they list on the host as MPEG audio file.
Then when I try to play a mp3 joint stereo file, I get a short spinning rainbow, the song does not play and the play head just doesn't move.
All other song files play, non-joint stereo mp3's, AAC, protected(purchased)songs, videos, etc.
Apple itunes tech's PLEASE CHIME IN HERE - I need an expert to examine this issue, I haven't been able to figure this one out and I cannot share/play my music on to my other macs....
    BIG THANKS!"
macmenno, I hope you can help - THANKS!!!

  • Strange Issue  with Logout | Shared Library in WebCenter

For our customer, we have written a couple of task flows. We deployed this as an ADF Library JAR and included the JAR into our WebCenter Portal project (using IDE Connection -> File System Connection). We then placed the task flows onto a few portal pages and everything works fine.
Now to avoid redeploying the portal application each time we make a small change to the task flows, we decided to go ahead with the shared library approach. We create a new “Generic application” in ADF, added the ADF Library JAR to this application and created a WAR deployment profile. We then deployed this application as a “shared library” to the Weblogic server.
We then made the necessary entry to weblogic.xml of our custom WebCenter Portal application and deployed it.
The task flows were getting consumed properly and all functionality was working fine. Just to test, I even deployed an updated version of the shared library and noticed that the portal application picked up the new task flow code. Everything seemed perfect 
But now when I click on logout of the Portal application, I am getting a error dialog which indicates a server 404 error.
To eliminate any issue with our custom code, I repeated the same steps with a very basic task flow application and a new WebCenter portal application.
    1.     I ran the application, and logged in as “weblogic” and saw the task flow was displaying correctly
    2.     Click on Logout. Got an error dialog (A connection to server has failed (Status=404))
    3.     Click on OK in the dialog. Then click on Logout again. Got another error dialog ("Because of inactivity your session has timed out" )
    4.     Click on OK in the dialog. Got logged out (saw the page without the secure content i.e. my task flow)
Ideally, I would like to get logged out the first time I get logged out (without having to see those two dialogs). The logout was working perfectly fine before we switched to the Shared Library approach.
Am I missing something? Any pointers?
    Note – My Jdev/ADF/WebCenter versions are 11.1.1.5.0

Sometimes resetting an Apple ID password can help >  Apple - My Apple ID
If that doesn't help, from the iTunes menu bar click Store > Sign Out
Restart the Mac, launch iTunes then sign in again.

  • Trying to install itunes on windows vista and get the following error message:

Trying to install itunes on windows vista and get the following error message: An error occurred during the installation of assembly "Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32",publicKey Token="1fc8b3b9a1e3b",process orArchitecture="x86"". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80070424.

A broken Windows Modules Installer then. It's a bit of an involved fix getting past it, but we've had success here with it in the past.
First, I'd strongly suggest setting up a system restore point.
Now try the Scenario III treatment from the following document:
Windows Update Error 80070424 in Vista
Head back into Windows Update and attempt to get updates again. If they still fail, this time with an 8000FFFF error code, try the following Microsoft document:
    Windows Update error 8000FFFF
If you get Windows Updates flowing again, stock up on any you're behind on (restarting the PC when requested to do so). This may take some time and may have to be done in several batches, depending on how far you've fallen behind. Basically, keep going back to Windows Update until it stops offering you new updates.
After the updates have been installed, restart the PC one more time (in order to ensure that any pending installs requiring a restart have been resolved).
Now try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the 0x80070424 this time?

  • HT5922 Volume control Itunes Shared Library from Macbook air played through iPad

    Hi everyone,
I am using iPad Air to airplay through use of iTunes shared library from Macbook, to Play to my Apple TV using the Remote App from apple on the iPad.
I noticed that the swipe up control screen volume control does not affect the volume on my speakers of the Denon which is perfectly connected with apple tv. The only thing which controls the volume is the Denon volume control.
The iTunes  volume control on the Macbook also do not work with Apple TV when airplaying
I assume this is because of the Denon Reciever, but would like to hear if others who are connecting directly without a multimedia amplifier and speakers are also unable to raise volume using itunes control or not?
Thans in advance for any feedback given.

I think this may be a clue to the problem. When you purchased the MBA did you restore any of your personal data from a prior backup? In particular, did you restore any prior data in the Music folder?
Or, did you simply launch iTunes and enable iTunes Match?

    Hi cbafiero,
It seems that the problem lies in your router. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is (I've just now discovered it myself), but after switching from a Linksys WRT54GX2 to a thrift store Netgear, my shared libraries appeared instantly. My gut is telling me that the Linksys routers are blocking the multicast traffic, which is stupid on Linksys's part, to filter traffic internally. I'll look more into the Netgear and see what it has that the Linksys doesn't (or vice versa).
