  • AE CS6 having problems with jagged edges in my render

I used to compose videos together using After Effects CS4 and the default settings for rendering produced good renders, but after I've upgraded to the CS6 version I notice jagged edges problem in my renders that I didn't have in CS4, and i'm using the default settings in CS6.
This is a screenshot of a video rendered using CS4 (default render settings):
This next one is rendered using AE CS6 (default render settings):
I have looked into the formats that both versions render at and tried to figure out what the difference is. To start off, the available formats given in CS4 seems a lot more different than those in CS6.
-CS4 rendered in a "Video for Windows" format by default and in Format Options it is Uncompressed, while CS6 doesn't have the "Video for Windows" option at all (and I can't find AVI format for CS4).
-In CS6 the default format is "AVI", and the Video Codec inside Format Option is "None" by default.
I'm not sure if this is why CS6 produces jagged edges in its videos. Does anyone know what I can do to render sharper videos in CS6 so i can stop using the CS4 version?
For example should I maybe change the format from AVI to something else? Change the Video Codec from None to something else?

Well, straight up: Have you ever bothered to read the AE help? No offense, but this really sounds like "I use the default settings, but otherwise I don't know quite what I'm doing." AVI is cunningly called Video for Windows proper. the rest makes no sense. You are not telling us anything meaningful like comp settings and so on or how you verify your output. The second image simply looks like the hardware scaling in the comp viewer at odd zoom rates and resolutions. Anything beyond that will require a lot more info.

  • Why is my rendered color corrected movie pixelated with jagged edges after rendering?

    Hello All,
I am new short film movie producer and have just started using Adobe Premiere CS6 and Audition CS6.  Comparing my flat footage before adding it to a sequence and color correcting it and rendering it, it looks fair.  But after all these transitions it now looks pixelated along with very jagged edges.  This is my first short film for my first client and I am at my witts ends!  I have tried to copy the sequence and transfer it to a new sequence with differnt settings comparing the pixel aspect ration, fps, trying to match the clips specs and I am so stuck. Can anyone please offer any suggestions or let me know if there are procedures I have overlooked.  Thanks Adobe Community.
    Michael Diaz

Let's back up a step - what camera do you use? If it's an HDV model, then yes you have anamorphic footage. Simply choose an HDV sequence preset to match. If your camera shoots 720p or full 1920x1080, those are square pixel (1.0) formats and are not anamorphic (anamorphic does NOT mean widescreen, it means "stretched to widescreen" basically).
In any case, drag a clip to the New Item button for best results until you get more educated and confident about the different formats you may be working with.
If you copied and pasted the contents of the SD sequence into an HD sequence, all filters and effects you had applied before should remain intact and not need reworking, except possible for titles and things involving scaling (since the size has changed).
As for exporting, you typically will NOT want an anamorphic export, except for widescreen DVD. You will not see anamorphic mentioned though, just choose "MPEG-2 DVD" and an appropriate widescreen preset and Adobe knows what to do from there. For web/computer viewing, best to avoid anamorphic footage, since many players assume 1.0 PAR and do not adjust the image for non-square pixels. So if working with 1440x1080 footage, and exporting to web or YouTube for instance, export as 1920x1080 (1.0) or 1280x720 (720p) so the viewer sees the proper 16:9 output, or the image may be squished otherwise!
    Thanks

  • Illustrator images with jagged edges when converting a document to pdf

    Hi,
    Illustrator CS6.
I created some images in illustrator. Saved the images as a .tff. Put the images in a Word.docx. Looks great. Convert the word.docx to a pdf and my images have jagged edges. I have anti-alaising check in my preferences but still the image looks bad.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

Did you resize the images larger than when inserted into Word?
What resolution did you export the TIF from AI at?
What was the Anti-aliasing setting (type or art optimized or none)?
Are you using Word's Save As PDF, or the Adobe Acrobat add-on?
Are you viewing the result in Acrobat (or Adobe Reader) at 100% or larger?

  • Font Prints With Jagged Edges

Okay, I have a document in which I used a font that I downloaded for free (yeah, I know*) and which has no italics set. After I had used it and gotten the work approved, I was asked to italicize a web address that was set in this font. So, I skewed it using the Indesign character pallette. I had heard before that this sometimes causes problems on the print side, but I figured I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, when the samples came back the font edges were bumpy, almost like noise in a raster image. So, for my next magical trick I selected that text and converted it to outlines. This produced pretty much the exact same result.
One last piece of weirdness: To work around the problem for now, we ditched the italics altogether. Now I get an e-mail telling me that even the unaltered font "still doesn't look terrific". Going to see for myself now.
My questions are: What causes this? Why didn't the edges get smoother when converted to vector curves? Does a better solution exist (other than the obvious one of using a different font)? Any insight will be appreciated.
    * I work for a State agency and we have limited resources, so purchasing a decent selection of fonts isn't an option. I found a couple of sites that offer many decorative fonts for download and have been using them without an issue for a couple of years now. I'm sure they're not Adobe quality, but they've worked fine until now.

    >You don't have to buy Adobe. But free is worth what you pay for it...
I didn't mean to imply that Adobe was the only source of quality fonts. I buy from other foundries as well, but I think Adobe has more inexpensive options than many of the other big names (though not all quality fonts come from big names, either).
But you DO get a bunch of very fine, and classic, Adobe fonts FREE with InDesign, and even more if you bought the whole suite. :)
I have no idea what the free font in question is, but unless it was something in a wild display face (which seems pretty unlikely, given the usage description), there should be no problem finding a suitable replacement in what came with the software.

  • Help keying jagged edges

    Hello,
I'm keying some footage shot on a 5D. Everything seems to be going ok despite the footage not being shot and lit perfectly (time, budget, the usual).
I'm having a bit of a problem with near-horizonal straight edges, I think this may be due to the quality of the footage and the fact it was shot on a dslr with its slightly flawed rolling shutter/horizontal subsampling etc.
I've included a still for reference.
Can anyone suggest a quickish solution to straightening this out? Or will I need to keyframe extra masks for these edges? Also, can anyone confirm this problem is partly to do with the camera and not just my photography skills?
    Many thanks.

can anyone confirm this problem is partly to do with the camera and not just my photography skills?
I can confirm that the camera and your lighting skills both contributed to your dilemma.
Because you didn't take the time to set up the shot properly when you got it, you now pay for it in post.
Because a Canon 5D Mk II  records H.264 files, you have lousy color sampling (aka color resolution); I believe it's 4-2-0, which is every bit as bad as the 4-1-1 color sampling of NTSC DV.
Getting a good chroma key is all about the edges of the subject.  But bad color sampling scrimps on the color information available at the edges.
And what do you need for a good COLOR key?  Accurate color, perhaps?
To see what I mean, take 15 minutes out of your day.  Watch the following video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44-FTEF1EAw
Bear in mind that your camera's color sampling is the same as the example you'll see for DV near the end of the podcast.
A DSLR might make nice pictures, but it isn't cut out for effects work.  If that camera has a full-time HDMI or HDSDI out on it -- that is, the resolution doesn't change when you hit the record button -- you can drop $5,000 to get a box that will let you capture video with 4-4-4 color sampling.
Your best bet: rotoscoping the offending parts.  That's how you're going to pay for your shooting haste in post.

  • 60i AVCHD footage transfer in with jagged edges.  What am I missing?

I'm logging and transfering in Final Cut Express.  The Canon C100 I just got uses AVCHD in the .mts files.  Express has no problem recognizing the card in my SD card reader.  I select AVCHD - Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 in the easy setup.  When I pull up Log and Transfer, all of the lines at an angle have those interlaced jaggy steps.  If I import and put the footage and drop it in my timeline, I don't have to render and the jaggies are still there.  Any options besides buying that $29 program that pops up on all the message boards when you google this problem?
    Thanks in advance...

You are seeing the interlacing because computer displays do not (cannot) present interlaced footage correctly. Interlaced video is designed to display correctly on TV monitors, not computer monitors.
Seeing the interlacing in FC is not in itself problematic, because if you make a DVD of the video it will display correctly on a TV monitor.
If it bothers you while viewing the timeline, set the Canvas scale to something other than 100% and FC will suppress a field in the display.

  • Jagged edges on photos.

    Hello.
I got a huge problem when trying to incorporate pics in PSE12.
I have downsized all pics to 2000X1500 using PS.
My problem is that the photos comes out with jagged edges and really bad quality.
I have tried all sorts of things.  Saving it to PC helped a little but still jagged edges and overall really bad quality.
    Tried different sizes, still same.
Even tried downsizing to 720 and burn to disc, playback on ps4.  Still same.
The quality of video is fine and looks alot better then Pictures.  I can just pause the video and it looks
    crisper with no jagged edges.
I have never experienced this Before with older versions of PSE.
And No!  This is not a resolution issue.  I know they wont look as crisp as original
photos but they should be on par with videoquality and as of now they are not.

    Vinjack
Just what program are you working with - Photoshop Elements 12 or Premiere Elements 12. The "PSE" abbreviation is typically used with Photoshop Elements.
In order for us to help you, please clarify your posting. If this is a Photoshop Elements question, you have posted in the wrong forum. You want the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum (photo editing) and not where you are now the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum (video editing). It is your mention of "Timeline" incorporated in the "PSE" description that is confusing. By any chance are you working in the Elements Organizer Slideshow Editor of a Photoshop Elements program? Do you have any version of Premiere Elements at all?
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thanks.

  • Jagged edges/pixilation

I'm trying to print a photo in iPhoto and it's coming out with jagged edges. When I print it as a 2x3 it looks ok, but when I print it as a 4x6 it blurs and pixelates.
When I printed it awhile back, even though the original is not as sharp as it could be, it printed ok, but now it's coming out with the images quite jagged.
I've tried varying the size of the image, but I'm not getting anywhere.
    Thanks.

That image file is way to small to print anything larger than your 2 x 3 or smaller. Fairly decent prints can be made at 150 dpi which would limit that file to about 2.3 x 1.6.
That looks like the size of the thumbnails in iPhoto. Where did you get that image file? How did it get into iPhoto?

  • Jagged Edges - When compressing 50 minute clip - burned in DVDSP

I'm in the process of authoring four DVD's (mixed martial arts, muy thai etc) which was shot in HD on a Panasonic HVX-200 using the DVCPro HD codec, at 24 fps progressive.
2 of the four DVD's I'm having problems with jagged edges around the two fighters (two guys shot against a white backdrop), you can clearly see blocky artifacting around the edges of them.
I've tried exporting via compressor using a 1-pass VBR 6.2 Mbps min - 7.7 Mpbs max, imported into DVDSP, build the project, and then when I use the DVD player program, I can see the artifacting.
However, I have a couple of other clips on the DVD, that were exported the exact same way, and no artifacting is evident.
I tried re-encoding at a CBR of 7.7 Mpbs, no change. Any ideas?
One thing that I just thought of is that I have been using the same source folder when building the project as the previous versions (to save time rebuilding all the motion menus, etc). Could that be a reason? Would DVDSP be using some of the information from the older encoded video?
    Any thoughts please.

Make sure that you are encoding for 24p. Set the video format for 720p, and the frame rate for 23.98. You should also be using 2-pass VBR, not 1-pass.

  • Jagged edges on curved shapes

Flash has some serious problems with jagged edges on curved shapes. When adjusting a curve on a shape, flash shows that it is curved
and then on releasing the mouse it turns into a sharp edge.  It has never worked correctly.
    Operating System:Mac 10.5, Flash CS4

Is it a fairly small shape and you're zoomed in?

  • Jagged edges in video

I just upgreaded to HD - I use Sorenson Squeeze to compress.  I DO de-interlace.  When compressing to mp4, when someone moves Im getting a jagged line on the subject that is moving.  Any suggestions?

Well, DV is lower field first.
But this is normal. When you de-interlace you are left with jagged edges where the individual field lines were. It is most noticeable with graphics/text and fine edges. Trust me I deal with this ALL THE TIME with my clients. They make commercials that are interlaced for broadcast, but almost ALWAYS watch their own material on computers. But they hate interlacing lines AND jagged edges... it is lose/lose.
Anyway your best bet is to use the best quality settings in compressor for de-interlacing. But you'll never get 100% rid of it. Sad fact of interlacing sadly.

  • G5, 10.6.8, trying to print biz cards, instead of clear print with sharp edges I get fuzzy print with pixels showing. Saving as PDF doesn't help. Any solution?

G5, 10.6.8, trying to print biz cards, instead of clear print with sharp edges I get fuzzy print with pixels showing. Saving as PDF doesn't help. Any solution?

    Mac OS X Version 10.6.8, iMac12,1
    .cwk (Appleworks)
    Kodak Easyshare 5100
If I paste the jpeg on a draw page and shrink it to fit, fuzzy print. If I create the text directly on a draw page, it's fine. (That suggests to me the problem isn't in the printer.) But I want to include a small drawing on the card, and the pasted jpeg of that small drawing is very poor quality.

  • Jagged edges because of oversaturated colors with XDCAM EX

    Hi,
i want to export a movie created in after effects as XDCAM EX 1080i50. My problem is, that i get jagged edges in the output file because of the oversaturated color im using in my After Effects composition. In the picture below you can see the star with the magenta color which has the jagged edges. With yellow i dont have this problem. Is there a Matrix of supported colors in XDCAM EX or another solution for this problem?

The stars above have all been created in the same layer. Blue and Yellow looks ok but the magenta has always the jagged edges. I get sharp edges if i change the color to less magenta and more white. It has to be something with the colors. I already tried the effect of broadcast compatible colors or how it sounds but without succes.
My workflow for export / import:
    Export in after effects cs 5.5 to QT422 HQ 1920 x 1080
import in premiere cs5.5 in XDCAM EX sequence 1920 x 1080
    export to XDCAM EX 1920 x 1080 i 50
if i export in premiere to QT 422 HQ it looks ok also with the magenta.

Can someone help me out please
ps. If anyone feels like re drawing me this then go a head.
    Cheers

    >@ Ru: u drew it um: inaccurate anyway...<
I drew it inaccurately for a reason.  I could have easily traced his file, but chose to do a clean offset of a not so clean file. You spent the time to verify that I didn't draw it accurately. Good for you.
    >this forum isn't for free help or imagine what will become of it.<
This forum's sole purpose is tor people who use Illustrator to seek and receive free help. That's what Meatball14 received, and it gave him the info he needed to create it himself.
