  • Help with KT4 Ultra and 5.1 surround

    Hi there
Ok I am new to this PC building game and have to be honest I don't know all the technical jargon so if anyone can help, please speak in good old common English, I is a bit slow on the uptake.
    The problem:
I have built a PC for the old man using the KT4 Ultra MS-6590 motherboard. It came with a two additional brackets, a blue tooth USB thingy, a 5.1 bracket and MSIDVD5.1ch DVD. Both brackets take up a PCI space but plug direct into the motherboard not the pci slot (you probably already know this).
Now i haven't installed these as I was unsure how to use them. The 5.1 adapter/bracket only has a two speaker jacks, and these run two types of speakers (which ones I can't remember right now). So if I was to pug it in, where do all the other speakers plug in to the system and am I supposed to buy a set of 5.1 speakers that are especially designed to use this type of jack configuration? Any recommendations on speaker packages are very welcome. I also take it that the DVD that came with it will help me set everything up yeh? I haven't tried it as I didn't install the bracket.
Ok next up, this Bluetooth bracket thing? So what's that all about? If I plug it in, will it give me bluetooth support or do I need to buy something else to make that work? Personally I would be surprised if I plugged it in and it worked.
Now if you are wondering what brackets I am talking about, you can see them here on the MSI site under the Socket A motherboard section, there are images right at the bottom.
Cheers for any help you can give, like I say, I am new to all this and I guess we all have to learn somewhere right? So please go easy on me.
    Cheers Jordy

    Cheers for that,
I read the KT4 unofficial Fact and got a little confused with what it was saying about bluetooth. I take it that it is in fact not bluetooth and just two extra USB ports? I could be wrong, like I say I get confused with all this techno babble.
Ok so when I installed the drivers and everything else for the motherboard, was c-media mixer installed with it, or is it on the MSIDVD5.1ch DVD?
That seem's easy enough to follow though cheers.
do you recommend any particualar speaker systems to make connection simple and easy? If you think I am dim, you should see the old man navigate the net (crap he is bound to read this).
Cheers for your help and anymore light you can shed on the bluetooth bracket.
    Cheers again Jordy  8)

  • HELP! HELP! HELP! KT4 Ultra (6590)

    Hi People,
About a month ago I bought a new system... Here are the specs....
    - AthlonXP 1800+
    - MSI KT4 Ultra (MS-6590)
    - 512 Mb DDR PC2700 (Spetek)
    - MSI GeForce4 MX440 AGP
    - Maxtor DiamondMax 9 60Gb IDE
    - LG CD-RW 52x24x52 IDE
    - Generic 60x CD-Rom IDE
    - 320w Power Supply (AMD Certified)
I have the following problem... RANDOM BOOTS! :( I dunno what is the problem... But I have some questions to MSI and for you... My KT4 hasn´t a cooler chipset on northbrigde, is it normal? Cause my system temperature is between 46ºC (idle) and 48ºC (full)... and my CPU is 47ºC (idle) and 52ºC (full)... HELP! HELP! HELP! What should I do? Ah, BIOS version is 1.2...
    Best regards,
    Bruno.

Your PC setup is pretty similar to mine. I had similar reboots as well and suspected the KT4 Ultra. It turned out to be a dodgy stick of RAM. Try the ramtesters from http://www.simmtester.com and http://www.memtest86.com, they'll definately find any RAM problems. Other than that disable the auto reboot on crash and see what the message on the Blue Screen tells you.
For info, since my rebuild with a new stick of ram I'm running...
    4in1 v4.45
Latest MSI drivers from MSI Update v2 (except the beta graffics driver)
Bios 1.3 (though 1.2 seemed ok to me)
XP SP1 with all updates from MS.
    Hope this helps...

  • KT4 Ultra MS-6590 - Win XP Home boots with 2GB DDR333 installed but not 3GB

    Spec...
    KT4 Ultra MS-6590
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (FSB set to 166MHz in BIOS)
    BIOS MS-6590v1.4
    Win XP Home 2002, SP3
    Problem...
Previously, had 768MB RAM installed, and XP strangely identified CPU as a 2200+.
Recently upgraded the RAM to 3GB DDR333 (3 sticks of 1GB 184-pin unbuff DIMM 128MX64 DDR PC2700), and changed BIOS settings for CPU and DRAM.
In the DOS boot screen, Win XP progress indicator fills completely from left to right, then stops with a half-blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.
Removed 1GB stick and Win XP successfully loaded, also now recognising the Athlon XP 3000+, and running a heck of a lot faster.
Tried adding the /3GB switch to the boot.ini file, which didn't do anything, and after reading more forum advice, guessed this might be irrelevant. I don't think this is a 4GT and PAE issue, as I'm not trying to install above 4GB (if I've correctly understood).
Also, forum advice (various sites) conflicts on whether Win XP 32-bit is limited to 2GB or 4GB, and I can't find any workarounds for my current setup.
    Any ideas?

Another test I've done is to enable boot logging with Win XP. This appends command lines to the file 'ntbtlog' in the windows directory, which mainly shows drivers being loaded as Win XP is launched. The log is normally date and time-stamped for every boot-logging session.
When all 3 sticks are installed, I cold boot, then press F8 and select 'enable boot logging' from the options menu. This is what appears on the screen as the system, attempts to load Win XP.
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\KDCOM.DLL
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\system32\BOOTVID.dll
    Loaded driver ACPI.sys
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\WMILIB.SYS
    Loaded driver pci.sys
    Loaded driver isapnp.sys
    Loaded driver viaide.sys
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\PCIIDEX.SYS
    Loaded driver MountMgr.sys
    Loaded driver ftdisk.sys
    Loaded driver PartMgr.sys
    Loaded driver VolSnap.sys
    Loaded driver atapi.sys
    Loaded driver disk.sys
    Loaded driver \WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS
    Loaded driver fltmgr.sys
    Loaded driver sr.sys
    Loaded driver PxHelp20.sys
    Loaded driver KSecDD.sys
    Loaded driver Ntfs.sys
    Loaded driver NDIS.sys
    Loaded driver Mup.sys
    Loaded driver BTHidMgr.sys
Then the process freezes and a solid white block appears in the top-left of the screen, with the top-right corner of the block blinking.
At this point, I turn off the PC using the main power switch, then remove the 3rd memory stick. After booting up again, with only 2 sticks installed, opening the text file 'ntbtlog' reveals that this boot event wasn't logged.
So, I reboot Win XP with only the 2 sticks installed, and select 'enable boot logging'. This time, the above list of loaded drivers is shown in the text file, plus a whole lot more. The potentially interesting observation is the next in the list after "Loaded driver BTHidMgr.sys" which is "Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\amdk7.sys".
'amdk7.sys' is a driver file which seems to come with one of the Win XP Service Packs, and which "is necessary to enable Windows XP support for AMD PowerNow! technology on computers that use a mobile Athlon 4 or mobile Duron processor." http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306458
Various other posts refer to it in relation to AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Mobile, whereas mine is a 3000+ in a desktop. Also, if 'amdk7.sys' isn't available, then Win XP will load the generic driver 'processr.sys'. In fact, my 'ntbtlog' includes the entry "Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\processr.sys" which would make sense.
However, my curiosity is that with the 3 sticks installed, Win XP fails to continue loading when reaching 'amdk7.sys' in the driver list.
Another test I did was to change the power management settings in the BIOS.
"IPCA Function: This item is to activate the ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power
Management Interface) function. If your operating system is ACPI-aware, such
as Windows 98SE/2000/ME, select Yes. Available options: Yes, No."
This was normally set to Yes. When I set it to No and rebooted with 3 sticks installed, instead of a half-blinking white block (as described above), the screen went black and then the system rebooted itself...
    The plot thickens!...
Maybe there's a clear explanation for this - however, I'm wary of doing something to the 'amdk7.sys' driver file (whether removing or disabling it somehow) in case it prevents Win XP from launching with just my 2 sticks installed. I'd guess there are precautions, but need further info on whether this is relevant, and what the implications might be.

  • KT4 Ultra (MS-6590) Please help me!

After som reading at MSI homepage i noticed that my motherboard suppurted AMD Athlon 3000+ if i flashed the BIOS.
So i did get a brand new AMD Athlon 3000+, flashed the BIOS to ver 1.4. And I changed the Frequency/Voltage to 166, and i was up and running.....for a while. Every time a start a game like FS 2004 or are working in 3-4 different programs the computer like DW, PS and Illustratoer:
    1. close down one or two programs, or shuts down the game, without any warning.
    2. reboot the computer without any warning.
But if i change the Frequency/Voltage to 133 the system get's stabil.

    Hi gruberstuber,
It sounds horribly like you're IBM Deskstar may be living up to it's more threatening nickname of DeathStar. These HDDs have a pretty awful history for reliability and from the symptoms you describe, I would be feeling pretty nervous about continuing with it.
Do you have access to another known good HDD at all, preferably from Western Digital or Maxtor? If you do, it would be worth substituting your IBM for one of these and giving that a go. Might work wonders.
It's not as likely, but it's possible that your PSU is rated slightly to small for the Graphics Card you're using. The GF4 4600 is notoriously power hungry and it is possible that this could be drawing your main voltages down to below -5% of the nominal voltage, this can cause you all sorts of weird problems. As a guide, you can't really tell if a PSU is holding up OK under load conditions by checking the voltages when the system is unloaded, all PSU's will give you terrific voltages in that situation.
I would go up to at least a 400W good quality PSU from either Antec or Enermax to be absolutely sure that the GF4 4600 is being catered for.
    All the best,
    Dimal.

Hello. First of all excuse me for my english, but I'm italian
After upgrading from 1.2 to 1.3 bios I had visualization errors in Windows XP (vertical black lines, font corruptions, ecc), so I decided to downgrade bios to version 1.2. Now MSI released 1.4 bios and I upgraded to this new version with the hope they had solved these problems, but they hadn't. Then I tried to disable AGP Fast Write and now Windows looks fine even if sometimes there are some black screens for few milliseconds during gaming.
There is someone that have my same problems? Any suggestion? I don't want to leave 1.2 bios forever

I recently went out and bought a KT4 Ultra (ms-6590) and when i installed my new ATI radeon 9500 pro i get no display when booting. So i then installed my older Nvidia TNT2 M64 32mb card and i still get no display. my system has not sucessfully booted yet with this board and it is my first time using it. and i thought it might be trying to load from the onboard video but come to find it there is none. It sounds like you just went to a store and bought this board?  Can you attempt a return and try another?

    hey
I got a KT4 Ultra - FISR along with and XP 2400 and other goodies for christmas. I put the machine together and installed 98se, and all of the included drivers the came on the MSI Utilities disk. Everything was working perfectly with it (got 11752 on 3dmark 2001, is that a decent score?) anyways everything was cool except the on-board c-media sound was not working at all.  ?(  I have 2 speakers w/ sub and i have them plugged into the line out spot in the mobo. I have turned the sound on in my BIOS and messed with all the sound settings in windows and still i get no sound at all. I even unplugged the bracket that came with it for surround because i saw it could possibly cause some problems. I then checked all my connections and still no sound.  X( I was woundering if there are any other settings or jumpers that i need to set for my sound to work. Any additional information on how to get my sound to work would be greately appreciated. My system specs are below. Thankz

  • The Final Episode with KT4 Ultra

Yesterday my KT4 Ultra had its last moments. A circuit near system fan connector blew up with fire and smoke. There was no overclocking, properly installed CPU, the latest BIOS was installed and the latest drivers etc. Nothing special...
    It is time for conclusion:
    - random reboots with 133 MHz FSB
    - MemTest showing different results in all 3 memory slots
    - CoolerXP crashes WinXP
    - burnt circuit
= unfinished product. MSI has rushed getting this MB to markets without proper testing and finetuning.
When I get a new MB from RMA I will change it to another brand.
ThankYou all for your help and advices!

Yes I seem to be having problems with the MSI KT4 Ultra board also (Model# MS-6590). I just got off the phone with MSI Technical Support and as we tried to troubleshoot, we realized the board was shipped with the CMOS jumper on pins 2-3. He explained that powering the board ON while in this setting would cause board damage. Well, then why would they ship it like this!!!!!!!!!! Slightly irritated.

I tried the CMOS jumper on pins 1-2, where they should be for normal 'posting' and when I hit the power on button I get NOTHING. What do you guys think? Board is damaged?

  • BG2 probs with KT4 Ultra

    Hello,
While installing Baldur's Gate 2 on my system, I get the following error:
"CRC Error: the file xxxxxxxx.xxx does not match the file in the Setup's .cab file. The medium you are installing from may be defective. Please contact your software vendor."
Underneath I get a prompt with "Abort", "Retry" and "Ignore" buttons. This error appears at several points during the installation process and in reference to several files.
I am running a dual-boot configuration with XP and 98. Under XP, pressing "Retry" makes the hard disk LED light up for a few seconds before displaying the error again. Pressing "Ignore" makes installation continue, until at some point (not always the same) the system reboots itself. Under 98 pressing retry sometimes allows the installation to continue, however it still stops and displays the error message again when it gets to the next problematic file.
I have ruled out the likelyhood that my installation disks are indeed corrupted by trying to install the game on a friend's computer right after the first time I got the error, and it worked fine. I have also installed the game on both of the two different computers I used over the summer (one was running XP, the other 98, both worked fine). I have tried with both the originals and the backup disks and I get the problem both times. Also, the game used to work on my current computer as well, until a severe crash forced me to reinstall Windows. When the error occured, I assumed it was due to a faulty OS installation and therefore reformated and reinstalled Windows yet again, and it still happened!
I'm running an Athlon XP 1700+ (not oc'ed) on an MSI KT4-Ultra motherboard, with 256MB RAM and a Radeon 9000. Windows XP has all the latest updates and all the latest hardware drivers installed, 98 has all the latest hardware drivers but no updates. Micro$oft's knowledgebase claims that the problem is caused by a third-party device driver, and I tend to believe it, as the same game installed from the same disks worked fine on the three other computers I installed it on, as well as on mine the first time round. The only thing in which my current configuration differs from my previous configuration and the configuration I'm running on now is that the first time I installed WIndows on this computer I was NOT using all the very latest drivers as I hadn't been connected to the net yet. Therefore, if it really is a driver, my guess is it would be MSI's motherboard driver.
    My issues are:
    why does this happen?
how do I determine whether it is MSI's driver causing it?
what does this CRC error message thing mean?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Do an EXACT search (quoted) of the error at google - sometimes that pulls up the result (had for me MANY times with install issues)
